| no partners | | We intended to do this loop hike as a more leisurely 3-day trip, but ended up making so many adjustments along the way that we finished our hike in two days. The adjustments were necessary as so much of the loop trail system was closed due to a managed fire. Parts of the U-Bar, Barbershop and Houston Brothers trails were closed (all parts we intended to follow on this loop hike) and all of the Fred Haught trail was closed. The posted signs said the trails were closed until at least 7/31/2009. We backtracked, took forest roads in lieu of trails, and went off-trail, all in an effort to do at least some of the Cabin Loop. We also backtracked quite a bit when we lost the trail...yes, we were warned! Therefore, we only did part of the actual Cabin Loop Trail, but still managed to log 18 miles.
The weather was a little warm during the day (mid-80s), and although we had good access to water the first day, every spring we had intended to access the 2nd day was beyond the closure point for the trail. That also helped convince us to make this a 2-day rather than a 3-day trip.
We saw elk several times, a horny toad, and tracks for wild turkeys and bobcats (I think...). We'd like to try the hike again when the whole loop is open. |
