| partners | | This was my second hike on the U-Bar and this trail is awesome-- one of my favorites for sure! Rachel picked me up and we took the long drive above the rim since everything else was closed. Payson and Pine seemed like a ghost town-- totally empty. We made it to the TH and only one other car was parked and we didn't see a single other hiker all day. I got to see a group of five elk going for a run which was nice.
This time, we took the trail a bit farther to the Barbershop Trail and went all the way to Buck Springs Cabin. This means we've both hiked to all the cabins of the famed Cabin Loop Trails. I still need to hike the Barbershop from U-Bar to Houston Brothers and I'll have done the whole trail section.
When we arrived at Buck Springs Cabin we were surprised to find a full on settlement going on. There were tents, work tents, a water tank, porta-johns, and generator. No one seemed to be around and then finally someone came out of a tent. They are a group of scientists from the University of Montana who have been doing a study in the area for two months every summer for almost 20 years. I'm surprised I've never heard mention of this. They are mostly studying birds in the area but have a couple mammal specialists with them as well. It was cool to hear about all their work and findings.
We headed back and went home. The temps were perfect and the sky was blue-- we couldn't have asked for a better day. Dane Spring was gushing like usual. Dane Canyon was dry. Barbershop Canyon had a good bit of water. Perfect day!
edit: don't trust mileage on the trail signs-- like usual, they're way off. |
