| no partners | | I've been "bugged" by some friends to guide them to these ruins. Planned an over night camp and hike to the ruins some time ago (think it was at a SuperBowl party). Group included Eric C., John D., Todd, Riley, Ken, Matt, and Erin with a few members backing out at the last moment.
Tip of the day - ropes certainly make the steep, dusty scree trail up to the ruins much more manageable. Also found 2 sets of "outer" ruins to the east of the main ruin. Have only heard rumour of these additional ruins. Can now confirm they do exist and will post photos...
Concerned that the forecast low for the area was 32 degrees F. Eric C. provided a camp meal of his "killer chilli" to help keep us warm! We met Rancher John on Friday. Shared a couple a brews with him and he told us tales about several relatively unknown ruins throughout the Cherry Creek valley. He said he's lived in the valley for 30 years and thinks he's been to some places with his hunting buddies that haven't been seen for hundreds of years. Would sure like to get Rancher John to guide us to some of these places...
Noticed that my GPS had intermittent reception during the hike. If there are sufficient data points, I'll post the route. Hope there's enough information to clarify distance and elevation gain. HAZ description indicates 1200 ft gain over 3 mile round trip. Dave Wilson's "Hiking Ruins Seldom Seen" 1950 ft gain over 1.5 mile one-way trip.
The May 2005 issue of Arizona Highways contains a Devil's Chasm Ruin feature written by Nick Berezenko and photographs by Jeff Snyder. The article mentions the tiered cliffs tower more than 2500 ft above the trail head. Also always admired some of the feature pics and hope some of my posts can do similar justice...
