I woke up early and headed to Boulder for some trail running. The night before had brought heavy hail and rains, so it was no surprise that the lower elevation trails were a muddy mess. It felt like I had ten pounds of mud stuck to each shoe. After slogging through the first half mile, the trail entered the forest and the conditions improved greatly. I did a figure-eight run, with an out-and-back up to Saddle Rock. The Chautauqua Trail is beautiful and well-maintained. I could get used to this...Boulder reminds me of the PNW. The views from the ridgeline were beautiful. This one is highly recommended at all times of year and in all conditions!

The recent rains had caused some flooding and knocked out a foot bridge on the trail.

First time visiting Boulder and Flatirons. You could say it was love at first hike.

Parked right at the trailhead, took one of the last few spots. Started early enough to where there was not a lot of trail traffic. Did not encounter too many people going up, going down it was more crowded (4th of July weekend).

It seemed like a steady constant climb to the top. Trail were well marked although there was 1 section where we almost went off trail. Stacks of rocks in one section of the trail, bridge near the 1st flat iron was a nice touch!
We were able to make it to the 2nd flatiron, few hikers at the top and saw some climbers too. View of Long's from the 2nd flat iron was beautiful, you could easily see the town from up the 2nd flatiron. Trees all around, rocks not as slick as they are here in Sedona. Lots of critters (rock squirrels?) that seems super friendly.

On the way back decided to do the Blue Mesa trail which was a more rolling gentle trail, looks like it would be a good one to run on. Certainly will come back to hike this again. :)

Discover some of the Colorado Chautauqua philosophy - actually the multiple Chautauquas that sprung up across the country in the late 1890's, early 1900's to provide access to summer vacations and self-improvement for the common man. At this time, only the rich and famous had access...
