Warning to Android RS users. RS needs plenty of time to boot and plenty of time to process any change to the Follow route.
Nobody wants to drive to a hike and then wait. Working on it. In the meantime, have it loaded at home with whatever hike you intend to hike as the Follow. If you absolutely must import or change the Follow, wait for the import or change to complete... as in nothing happens on the home screen for 45-seconds screen-on

Forcing map tiles at the beginning of the hike creates issues. To get all the mapping in place from a cold start involves a massive amount of processing. Android simply isn't quick enough for the way I redesigned in 8 weeks of free time with AI that thinks we all have lightning bolt threaded processors. For reference, it takes the near fastest Android on the market minutes to process what the cheapest iPhone conquers in seconds. The side-by-side tests are essentially a tricycle vs a Tesla.

Even as an Android user, I damn near swore it off. I have an iPhone. It does a few things very nicely, the battery has a charge like a nuclear reactor, and it's ridiculously fast. The side buttons are designed for a left-handed person, the camera assumes you have two good hands, the screen in sunlight with sunglasses is like looking at a mirror, it's too damn tiny, I'm old, cranky, and I hate it... Lol

It was hot, humid, and horrible for half a lap ascending, then less horrible. The top furlong to halfway down was refreshing tropical island breezes!

Home for a round. Passed up a small group with spanking new Doc Martens. Fine on this little hike, but the swank individual statement would wear off quickly on anything much longer.

The backside of the pie casserole is nice in the morning shade.

I try to do this once or twice a year. The weather was a nice 82-78 and sunset is now late enough to deal with the drive. Summit tacos accompanied an eclectic UN mix of reasonably uncommon Ukrainian, Polish, Serbian, Bosnian and Norwegian language speakers. Blackhawk, ringtail, and a couple of mice sightings.

Sun hoodie test round one. Headed up behind an old-timer that we've had slight differences in the past but we've come to respect each other. He always has a nice good medium pace so I figured I'd follow a stones throw back for about a quarter mile.

One kid whizzed by a little unrespectfully close to him. I damn near caught up and kicked him in the nuts.

Busy for a Monday with a smorgasbord of paces. Hit the power cord moves. It's fun to reduce various stresses that could result in a panic attack.

It got a little scary when I realized there may be merit in what Bruce babbles about getting rid of the ugly growth above my shoulders. Hellos were off the charts. Yeah it was a nice day and blah blah blah, whatever...

As a baseball cap type of guy that despises baseball, I must say this was absolutely phenomenal on the ascent. Even on a cooler day like today you would sweat like a monkey with any hat. Yes I do have technical data on monkey sweat ascending a mountain. Big floppy hats just don't work for me because they just don't work, I've tried them, just don't like them.

Sun sleeves might work for some, to me they're like circular oven mitts.

Notable eye contact before running away screaming by a few merits further testing.

There are a few precarious ledges and drop offs I enjoy pushing to the edge when the wind is right so my vision is clear that I noticed the side blinder hoodie impairs my vision. Probably best to wean off those anyways.

Forum trash big load and x sprout may be onto something with this one. In all fairness big load gets a semi-pass for occasionally using RS, x sprout does realize HAZ outside of the forum exist yet barely squeaks by for siding with the Norwegian mutt. Yet both are better than the retired hikers feeding off scraps. Well fudge, alston not jersey load. Embarrassing, not sure how the land squatter with a drone squeaks by but he does!

Apologies if I missed any of my favorite HAZ'rs while living the fashion statement dream.

PS; hey Mike, flip the jlp lyrics over, all I wanted was a Pepsi!

After dropping my GS off at school and making a pickup in the west valley I hit this up on the way home. Still pleasant temps around 10am and throughout the hike. This is actually a nice loop with the ability to add AEG and mileage to suit. I'll probably do this again (temps permitting).

I saw a poppy!

Looked forward all week to freeze and I forgot my damn headlamp. Expected ground sooner rather than later on one step and slightly tweaked my left knee.

Heading down the knee was not happy and tweaked my attitude. Pouted, crawled a second.

37° and windy, for sure as hell wasn't there for the weather.

Sassy Moonscreen wants to go to the edge via an illusion. If unfound pain is the goal, squeak it out on luck without Yin.

First hike of 5 of the Phoenix Summit Challenge. I was a little nervous about doing this trail in the dark before sunrise, but it wasn't bad with the headlamp. My group decided to stop and rest about half way up. We rested for at least 10 minutes and when we decided to continue one of our group was missing. After a couple minutes looking I sent a text and he said that he was right behind us. LOL. Apparently he walked right past us and was following some other folks thinking it was us. We caught up with him eventually.

We reached the summit just before sunrise. A Native American man was up near the high point playing a drum and singing as the sun came up over the horizon. It was a beautiful way to start the day!

Not too shabby of a hike completed three weeks post appendectomy. Well organized, fun romp but likely one and done for this circuit. I was happy to have Kriket along for company on summits 2, 4 & 7. Dreamy Draw start sixteenth of 104 finishers. 8:55:44 total time.

Phoenix 7 Summit Challenge (2nd time): Begin at 0500, and complete 7 hikes for a total of 22.8 miles with AEG of 5600 feet within 12 hours.

1) Sidewinder to Ridgeback Overlook (2.85 miles, 483 feet AEG, 44 minutes): Began at 0520. Many people had started at 0430, and a number of them were finishing as I was starting. Completely dark except for the headlamps. Flat for almost a mile, then a nice ascent to the peak, then back down. Nice warmup, fun.

2) Lookout Mountain Summit (2.89 miles, 640 feet AEG, 53 minutes): Flat / mediocre for the first mile, then more interesting after that as the slope increased. The last 200m consisted of light scrambling to reach the peak. This was fun.

3) VOAZ peak from Dreamy Draw Trailhead (3.14 miles, 537 feet AEG, 52 minutes): First 200m on concrete walkway. Some nice views of the surrounding peaks. The official route was not marked, and there were multiple forks, so there was occasional confusion about which way to go, but we figured it out. This felt a lot shorter than it was, and felt like we reached the "peak" quickly. This was fun too.

4) Piestewa Peak (2.33 miles, 1151 feet AEG, 84 minutes): Better than last year. Just kept climbing up, stopped at the top for about 5 minutes. My knees were feeling it on the way down. This area was supposed to be closed off for the event, and parking was no problem, but there were still many people on the trail.

5) Las Lomitas Trail to Ranger Summit (3.62 miles, 940 feet AEG, 74 minutes): Las Lomitas trail was boring. Ranger Trail became interesting with decent views after it crossed the road and began climbing. There were great views at the top. Made some new friends on this one.

6) Alta Trail (3.28 miles, 786 feet AEG, 72 minutes): The official starting point was not at the trailhead but further back on the road. This one had a number of switchbacks, and felt a LOT longer than it actually was. The views were decent.

7) Holbert Trail (4.65 miles, 991 feet AEG, 126 minutes): This one was fun, with good views along the way, some mini scrambling, and a lot of people (many of whom were doing the 4 or 5 summit challenge). Good vibes all around.

There was also a total of over 2 hours of driving between trailheads. The sky was overcast most of the day. Overall a fun day and a good challenge. Hamstrings were pretty sore at the end. Spent about 10 minutes at the festival afterward, enough to pick up our free food/drink, then head back home to the shower and hot tub.

Second time on Piestawa Peak. First time was quite a few years ago. Next weekend this is going to be my first hike in the Phoenix Summit Challenge and I thought it would be good to remind myself of the trail since I'll be hiking it in the dark before sunrise.

Good call I think. I remembered it being steep with lots of uneven stairs and I was right. At least it's fairly short! Can't wait to do it again next week.
