Note: my stats are for both Hidden Canyon hill (also known as Peak 3210, I believe) and Peak 3193 which is labeled on the topo map.

I've done many hikes from this trailhead including the entire Yetman trail, the hike to the Bowen house and "painted cave", the hike to Peak 3286, Twin Hills East & West, and more.

This time I would go to a new peak I never knew existed. I surprised to see the trail went all the way to the saddle between Hidden Canyon Hill and peak 3193. I should have remembered this before because I came through this saddle when I hiked Twin Hills East & West a few years ago. I guess I didn't realize this was the same saddle I was at previously.

Once at the saddle it was easy to do an open Country hike up to Hidden Canyon hill. At the top, I found a rock pile and a jar with a registry. I signed it and noticed that the sun was going down over the mountain. I probably only had 30 more minutes of daylight, so I continued on. I walked back down to the saddle and next I would walk to the summit of 3193. I walked North of the saddle and found a pretty well maintained trail heading up to Peak 3193. The trail went all the way up and it was easy to follow. At the top there was a huge pile of rocks that were 6 foot tall. I didn't see a registry. From this location I could see the Starr Pass Resort, downtown and pretty much the entire city. It was a nice peak with great views.

From here, I went back to the same way I came up. It started getting dark when I was on the Bowen trail, but with 1/4 moon, I was able to see enough. I was able to get all the way back to the trailhead without using a headlamp. In fact, I later checked my backpack and realized that I took the headlamp out on a previous day and used it for something. I didn't have my headlamp with me anyway, but it all worked out OK in the end. Nice beginner level peaks.

Stats:
-------
Distance (round trip): 4.6 miles
AEG: 651 feet
Strava moving time: 1 hr 52 mins
Strava elapsed time: 2 hrs 31 mins

Driving directions:
--------------------
From anywhere in Tucson, take I-10 to Grant, exit 256.
Take Grand road going west. continue for 1.2 miles.
After Silverbell Rd, Grant runs into W Ironwood Hill Dr, continue for 2.9 miles.
Turn left onto N Camino De Oeste, continue for 1.8 miles.
there is a designated parking area for the trailhead which hold about 8 cars.

On May 22, we had planned to do Angel's Landing, but some of our party were still tired from the exertions of the day before, so we decided to do Hidden Canyon instead.

We started from the Weeping Rock Trailhead, but did not go to Weeping Rock. Instead, we hiked the trail to the right. At the next right (but after many switchbacks), we continued on to Hidden Canyon; had we gone left, the trail instead leads to Observation Point. When we hit the end of the well groomed trail (and an "end of trail" sign), my wife and I continued into the canyon. (My daughter was tired and chose to wait for us.) We also continued past a second "end of trail" sign that was much further into the canyon. We turned around at a scramble which looked easy enough to ascend, but I was concerned about reversing the moves for the down-climb.

Great views on this hike, though not much solitude on the day we did it.

This was our second hike of the day in Zion Nat. Park. This trail switch backs up the face of a cliff to a small hidden side canyon near the top. The trail follows a narrow ledge cut out of the cliff face in some areas and has a chain bolted to the cliff wall along some of these ledges to hang on to. Not a trail for people with severe fear of heights so my wife opted out of this hike and took the shuttle down to the lodge to do some exploring down there. The views of the canyon from this trail as it climbs up the cliff are awesome and worth the effort. The maintained trail ends at some small pools in the bottom of the hidden canyon but you can continue off trail up this small canyon if you are so inclined. Cousin Mark and his wife started out with me on this hike but they turned back when Mark's fear of heights started to get to him on a slippery section of trail along a narrow ledge in the cliff face. I continued on to the end of the maintained trail then turned back to meet them at the shuttle stop below. They weren't there and it was a couple hours before we all got back together down at the Zion Lodge. By then it was getting late and we didn't have time to do another trail.

After Angel’s Landing and all 16 miles of The Narrows, my wife and I were looking for a short fun and easy hike. So we chose Hidden Canyon. Much to my surprise and delight there were sections of this hike with chains due to the sheer drop-offs. At the end of the hike we explored fairly deep into hidden canyon, some distance past the arch. We finally reached a point where we were not about to go any further without climbing gear. On our way back we scrambled up to the lookout for a minute to take in the view. We started this hike early and had shade for the entire hike.

Hiked into Hidden Canyon to see the standing arch. Most of this trail is on a prepared surface, even some chains to help in the exposed narrow places. Once you enter the canyon itself you scramble over or around whatever natural obstacles there are, though in a few slick rock places there are chiseled out footholds. My wife did ask me, "were those created?" I just said yes and kept going.

The arch is a nice turn around point if you have other things to do in the park. I hear continuing on is also nice.

We visited Zion the week before Christmas in hopes of getting some wintery type pictures, and we weren't disappointed! The first two days were pretty grey and bleak, but the last day was bright sunshine and clear skies (photos of that day coming soon).

This hike was a "hmmm... Let's do this one", totally unplanned. That seems to be the best kind for us, we love the surprise of seeing unexpected things. Hidden Canyon fit that bill exactly!

This was a great hike...had it all...steep switchbacks, dangerous drops, chains, slot canyon, arch, mild canyoneering...we had a BLAST and finally a reprieve from the rainy weather we'd had while camping.

I hiked with my 8 and 11 year old which made for extreme nervousness **http://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=192452** (my 8 y/o probably wasn't quite ready to defy death...he just didn't have the focus on the chains... :o )

We hiked about 1/4 mile back into Hidden Canyon to see the arch....

On our descent, I video'd the chain sections...I would post, but I'm ranting at my kids to hang on WAY to much...LOL.

Great Day!

Went up several of the dryfalls past the arch. Eventually reached a climb that looked like I would have to really work up a sweat to climb it, so I turned around there.

On the way back from Observation Point, we took a sidetrip up this short & sweet canyon and made it up a fair ways past a few scrambling sections.

I again made a sidetrip up this canyon after hitting Observation Point though I made it quite a ways up past some obstacles that require scrambling until I was stopped by one that required getting wet and climbing up a skinny log. ;)

Quick hike to scout out the trail. Will have to come back when there's more warmth in the air, though, to explore the canyon fully.
