A hike to clear the soul. I’m out near Saguaro east for a few days so I thought I would check out some hiking. The falls in Tanque Verde canyon were flowing after some recent rain so I had hope that I might catch some water at Bridal Wreath Falls. With storms forecast for 11 am, I got an early start on the Bridal Wreath Falls loop starting at Douglas Sprint TH.This was my first time in any part of Saguaro NP and it did not disappoint.
The trail construction on Douglas Spring was superb. The incline was steady but the views were great and the terrain was easy. I made it to the falls quickly and was delighted to find a trickle of water at the falls. There were some stagnant pools along the trail in the canyons and washes, more than I expected. After standing under the trickle for a few seconds, I looked for a snack in my pack and realized I didn’t bring one. Out I went. The way back to the parking lot, I took Three Tank trail, maybe Carillo, Wild Horse, and Garwood. I adored the stretch of Three Tank trail, it really reminded me of the western Supes and had me feeling a tad nostalgic but also excited to see more in Saguaro.
At one point, I got very in my head and started looping things that have been on my mind, as I do. I heard a twig snap to my left and it startled me back into the present. A deer leapt in front of me and across the trail. It startled me so much I had goosebumps all over my body. A good reminder to stay present. Also caught some cottontails and one very sad dead gopher snake, maybe a hooded oriole.
All in all, an incredible day out. I can’t wait to check out Douglas Spring campground in the fall.

After the heavy wet storm was the perfect time to hike to Ernie and Bridal Falls. Cold and sunny nice day for it. Lots of people out, but most go to Bridal Falls, not Ernie Falls. Lots of flowing water. With Brian.

A bit hotter today than I would have liked. The second mile or so was brutal because a whole lot of sweat got in my face and there were so many steps. I hate steps so much it is hard to describe. After that section it was easy going to the falls. The falls were very rewarding. I wasn't expecting much: a dried up wash with some 10 ft drop in rock. Suffice to say, my expectations were blown away. The falls look smaller in photos. Maybe that is just me misremembering it. The way back was nice. There was one astounding view of the Santa Catalinas appearing out of nowhere. The way down had no steps and was instead nicely switchbacked. A few of the switchbacks were completely unnecessary though, going uphill just to go back down and some with an obvious shorter path, cutting off the whole switchback. Perhaps that was the old route of the trail. The hike was over soon enough. Good outing. The fee for the park is expensive though!

Fun route up to Ernie's Falls and the park boundary. Really nice day too. The falls were of course bone dry but it is a neat spot.

First trip to Bridal Falls, hadn’t gotten around to it before. Bit disappointing as it was already virtually dry, just a little dripping water. Climbed up above and saw it was virtually dry up there also.

We hiked the Garwood Loop back in 2016 and really enjoyed the area, so we thought we would check out the falls during a weekday to avoid crowds. This hike follows the Douglas Spring trail, and then turns off South at 2.7 miles into the hike. We also noticed there is another fall (Emmie's Falls) at the same intersection but North (0.8 miles) so we figured we would hit both falls.

They were both quite nice, and water was flowing OK.
Over all a great hike. In addition to the falls, during the loop, we must have ran into a 4-6 streams. The park is wetter then I expected, Probably a lot to do with the time of year.

Didn't really start seeing people until we come out of the foot-hills back in the main area of the park.

Surprised that there wasn't very many wildflowers. Seems that we may be getting more rain then Tuscon so far this year.

Fun hike!

Sometimes you get to check a hike off someone else’s list and also enjoy a new trail as well. A visit south on Saturday to saunter in the Saguaro National Park East and see the sights and hear the sounds of water streaming down sent us to Bridal Wreath Falls Loop, East of Tucson near Tanque Verde.

The small parking lot at the Douglas Springs Trailhead was overflowing by our 8am arrival. Low clouds hanging on the peaks slightly obscured the snow that arrived the day before.

Already warming, minimal layers were needed which is yet another selling feature of Arizona. Even local residents can migrate South to warm a few degrees.

The trail is in top notch condition and the trail signs for the loop are clear and very present. The climb starts gradually and then builds, creating a nicely paced workout. After stopping to shed the only extra layer, we saw some Fall color in one of the drainages as we approached the spur to the falls.

A little maneuvering in the rocks prior to falls lands you at the base. There was water falling but to describe it we decided it was more of a hand wash than a hair wash level. Nonetheless, we saw water fall at the waterfall.

All that glitters is not gold—sometimes it’s Mica. Shimmering in the southern sun, like the floor of a kindergarten class at Christmas.

Obligatory photos and then a return via the loop which, as the official write up indicates, is a stellar option.

The many drainages and washes indicate the amount of water that is present here. While not flowing, water in the natural catchments were present and most likely keep the critters watered all year long.

No goldfish at Steel Tank but one must honor the triplog by taking time to look and report.

As for other sightings - a few equestrians enjoying the trails and a few sulphurs flying around. In warmer weather, this place would be a wonderland.

An in theme stop at Saguaro Corners restaurant was the end of trail before heading home. An indoor/outdoor establishment which offers a nice selection of Tucson brews and home cooked chips sent us home satisfied. And if seated inside, a view outside to a man-made waterfall if your hike leaves you wanting.

One of the topics discussed on the hike out was the rating systems for hike logs and we both agreed they are skewed higher than lower because hikers are happy people and even more so when they get to do what they love.

Signed,
Self-aware Over-rater

Nice morning hike with a good friend. The weather was beautiful, cool and breezy. From Douglas Spring trailhead headed south on Garwood. Saw only one other hiker on this spur. The damn was neat. Thought about climbing down to explore the little nook but rocks were pretty slippery. Continued east on Carrillo/Three Tank until meets back up with Douglas Springs. Decided to take the spur to check out Bridal Wreath falls as Tucson has had quite a bit of rain lately. It was running strong with about 3 feet of water in the pool. Met quite a few hikers heading up to the falls as we descended back to the trailhead. Saguaro NP never disappoints!

Trail starts off fairly easily so if you forget to lock your car about a half mile into the hike, its no problem to turn around and go lock up and then resume the hike. ](*,) After passing the Converse trail things start to get a little steeper. The trail is well maintained with "steps" added in place but there are some bare rocks that you have to climb over. Things level off a bit and you pass the Carillo trail, then you start to climb again. Again, the trail is well maintained with the "steps" added in to help. This is a 1.2 mile leg then you meet up with the Three Tank trail. Toward the end of this leg, and probably about .1 mile from the Three Tank trail is a huge bee colony (I attached a picture) on the left hand side of the trail. A log was placed on the trail (and hopefully is still there). There is room to pass around the colony to the right. From here on out it is a fairly easy hike to the Bridal Wreath Falls. To actually get close up to the falls you have to climb over a bunch of fallen rocks, but if water is running it is worth that extra bit. It took us two hours to climb up, but then I was snapping pictures along the way, and an hour and a half to walk back... still taking pictures, but not as many. Had we got an earlier start we might have ventured to Ernie's Falls. Maybe next time.

Nice loop hike on well maintained trails. The only advice is go when there is water flowing. These trails are pretty heavily traveled but you still have to watch for all the venomous creatures along the trail.

I had to change my original plans for the day thanks to a 45 minute construction delay on I-10 Tuesday morning, but this was a good alternative. I hiked the Douglas Spring trail over to the Ernie Falls trail, took that over to the park boundary. There were a few stagnant pools on the other side of the fence that I checked out, but no falls that I could see. I then went over to Bridal Wreath falls, there was a heavy trickle coming down. I took a good head dunk, it was icy cold and refreshing! I made my way back along the Three Tanks trail, but made a wrong turn and ended up coming back on the Carillo trail, there was a little more mileage and a decent bit of extra elevation gain. All in all a good day, got back to the van about 15 minutes after the sun set.

Great weather for this hike....thought it might be too hot but turned out to be pretty nice. The trails are great so we made really good time to Bridal Wreath Falls. Not much water at the falls...there were a few pools up above the pour off. Wildflowers were not abundant, but there was a wide variety and a few of the Saguaros are starting to bloom. After the falls on the way out we had a bonus of seeing a Gila Monster :D
