Pikes Peak attempt. We knew it was early in the season, and also knew that the way to address the remaining (significant) snow was to start super early so that it was still frozen and easier to walk on. But, logistically, we couldn't get on the trail earlier than about 8:30 am.

The trail was fine until about a half mile before Barr Camp, where we began to encounter snow drifts on the trail that were unaviodable.

We stopped at Barr Camp; took a quick tour of the bunkhouse and chatted with the caretaker--a young couple who decided to take a break from regular life and signed up for a year's stint managing the camp. It's open 365 days a year!

Beyond Barr Camp, the trail was completely snow covered, and by the time we got near 11,000 ft. we were were regularly post-holing up to our thighs. We only had spikes and no snow shoes, so it was hard going. Thought we might power on to the A-frame at around 12,000 ft, but with afternoon storms forecast, we decided to pull the plug and save our summit attempt for another time. It was the right call.

On the way back, we took an alternate route that swung us by the top of the Incline. 2000+ feet in 0.9 mi. I did this one several years back. The epitome of stair climbers ....

In general, a beautiful day on the mountain. Storms did roll in later that night and dumped another foot of snow on the peak, I understand.

I walked up the Manitou Incline, all 2,768 steps. Then took the Barr trail down roughly 3 miles to the bottom. I could not find any free parking anywhere near the incline so I just parked down by the Manitou Elementary school. Some locals told me that there are no restrictions on the alleyway behind the school, so I parked there, then walked West toward Ruxton Ave, and went up from there. When I got to the incline, I saw many people there, going up and others coming down. It was a relatively busy area that probably gets hikers all year round, even when it's near freezing. I started up the incline. Many of the stairs were railroad ties, sometimes stacked 2 high. Every time I passed an interval of 100, I saw a metal tag on the step that indicated the step count. The temps had to be around 32 degrees and I saw some crazy people wearing shorts and one guy without a shirt on. I don't know how they do it in that climate. I was wearing a T-shirt + a flannel shirt + a heavy leather jacket and jeans.

Anyway, I rested a few times along the way and made it to the top in about 1 hr 30 minutes if you take out breaks. At the top of the steps was a decorated tree and someone offered to take a few pics of me at the top. From here, I decided to take the Barr trail down. The Barr trail was very well maintained and not steep at all. The Barr trail had some nice shade in many places and some wooden fences/railings along the way.

Some people went down the stairs on the incline but it seemed very monotonous and probably hard on the knees. I saw a few people walking down the steps backwards, which looked strange and quite dangerous. They said it was better on the knees. But, if they tripped doing that it would be a bad fall, I'm sure. Anyway, I made pretty good time going down the Barr trail. Along the way there were a few signs. I can't imagine taking the Barr trail all the way to Pikes Peak. I believe it was 11.5 or 12 miles to the top and something like 7,200 feet AEG. A really difficult hike. I think if I try to hike to Pikes peak someday, I would attempt it from the West side which is only a round trip of something like 12 miles.

FYI - My Strava app took a dump and gave me scattered random points for the final 1/3 of the incline. When I got to the top I was able to start a new GPS track going down the Barr trail. Then, I joined the 2 tracks together and did some minor editing. I believe my stats are correct.

My Stats (based on my starting point):
---------
Distance (round trip) = 7.11 miles
AEG = 2,417 feet
Strava moving time = 1 hr 35 mins (up) + 1 hr 39 mins (down Barr trail)
Strava elapsed time = 2 hrs 24 mins (up) + 2 hrs 10 mins (down Barr trail)

Warm weather dropped kids off at camp so I got a late start. Parking and no shuttle running in Manitou added 3 miles to the total distance. It was already almost 90 when I got to the trail. Could smell donuts near the summit, but tons of construction and fences deterred me from exploring. Maintained a good pace up and down. Trail has been improved since last time, but it is still a rough trail. Saw very few people on the way down because of my late start, but there was a couple recovering incline junkies, because The incline is closed ,running up Barr trail since there are stiff fines for trespassing on incline.

Realized I haven’t done Pikes Peak this year. Planned on Crags, but after dropping M at school I was already there for Barr Trail to Pikes Peak. Great day a little warm at the bottom. I’ve only done the complete Barr trail twice. Not My favorite, but 7600’ AEG makes for a good workout.

I don't need no stinking shuttle or Pumpkin loop revised to be a little less pumpkin

Took this off the calendar mainly because of smoke from all the forest fires burning in the area. It became apparent half way up Heizer that although it was clear at the house the winds were blowing smoke into the Springs and consequently the first few Miles of the Barr trail which made it kind of hard to breath. Once I got above the treeline it was better. I'm not going to lie even w/ adjustments so it's not off trail it's a pumpkin. It could be done as a two or three day depending on your aversion to death marches. There is camping at the Barr camp and a sign that says no camping w/ in 100' of the trail so I guess you could forgo the overnight fee at Barr Camp and still use the toilets for free if you wanted to. Also, camp sites all around The crags trailhead and camp ground, as well as Ring the Peak.

Above the treeline it was nice lots of Marmots, Flowers, and green. The views along the Ring to Peak which I missed when I did this counterclockwise are great. Views of the other side of Pikes Peak Most people don't see as well as views of the continental divide coming down the crags.
It was pretty hot along the ring to peak and I filtered 48 ounces on top of the 80 ounces I brought and the 16 ounce Gatorade I drank up top. Used it all. Nice hike I probably won't do again for awhile.

Hike basically follows Heizer trail to 638 which comes out across the sign 7.8 to summit on Barr to crags down and Ring the Peak to Mt. Esther. Pretty easy to follow well marked. Last half mile to Barr on 638 is in pretty bad shape and the crags trail coming off the ridge to the treeline is washed out in several places and slick especially on tired legs.

Extended my business trip to Colo. Springs through Saturday so I could get out and hit a bit of the trails in the area. Settled on the Incline as one of the iconic trails in the area. It's like a one mile stair-climber. Nearly 2,000 aeg in 1 mile. I would not have wanted to be the guy taking rail cars down the Incline back in the day--not sure I could have that much faith in the breaking system ....

Great work out, great views, and beautiful weather. At the top, we took the connector over to the Barr Trail for a more leisurely descent.

I'll be back next summer to continue on to Pike's Peak!

Tremendous, relentless climb up this huge peak. Normally I'm looking for a wilderness environment on a summit, but I must admit that a cold chocolate milk and some fresh donuts at the top tasted awfully good. And my knees were more than happy to take the cog railway back down.

After hiking 703 to Barr from Heizer decided to check where the 638 went. My wife saved me the road walk both ways dropping me off before work and picking me up after getting the kids. Didn't need the extra 4 miles.
Anyway, up until a mile before Barr 638 is in real good shape. There is no sign and there is a large branch blocking the trail where it meets Barr it is however directly across from a sign for 7.8 miles to the Summit and conveniently below Barr camp. I stopped at the camp ate some food and headed up. Hit the camp on the way back and filtered water because I couldn't stand the taste from the water fountain up top last trip.
Posted a route from Route Scout. This would be the return from the Pumpkin route if I ever do it again. No questionable areas or bushwacking. Because of where it connects it would add a couple miles to the trip. This hike was pretty nice for scenery and exploring the area. 638 crosses several large canyons to get to the Barr Trail so the scenery was fantastic with a couple pretty old stands of aspen. :) Saw several Marmot, deer, and one pika. Great weather and the forecasted T-storms did not materialize.

I don't need no stinking shuttle Part III

I seem to need some crazy goal to keep me motivated. I hiked the Superstition Ridgeline as a loop and the Superstition Ridgeline x2 the next year. So I had this idea that I wanted to do a big loop to Pikes Peak from my house.

I have had the route for a couple years and my whole crazy hiking month for me in April was to hike this in May. Unfortunately, our large amount of snow in April and May made this impossible. A lot has happened since April. Contract change and job location change. Of course the birth of our second child. Training and schedule change to name a few along with an extremely active monsoon season.

So Yesterday was the day. :y: I was hoping the route would be straightforward and used by others to do a loop that would allow others to see both sides of Pikes Peak in one shot. However, I would recommend setting up a shuttle (yep you heard it from I don't need no shuttle right) and doing Barr or Crags up and going down the other trail. Both sides have their Pros and Cons, but are worth doing. The mileage would be half of what I did yesterday.

Having said that my route was great and I enjoyed the hike until leaving Barr Camp for home. I tried to leave my route and bushwack straight to Crowe Gulch, but the forest is impassable so I had to follow my route. By the time I got to Oil Creek tunnel I had no motivation to go the 1/4 mile round trip to see it. I didn't take into account the high amount of precipitation this which forced me to wade through a marsh of knee deep mud which was dry when I used this route previously. At this point I was too tired to take my original route out with the extra miles and decided to follow the creek that the marsh dumps into. This was extremely difficult and unfortunately in my exhaustion looked at the topo lines wrong thinking it was a mild descent rather than an extremely steep canyon. After getting out of the canyon. I did have my first Moose sighting and filtered water as I had run out by this time. I bailed on my non preferred route which was rough, but doable and took the shortest back to connect my loop. I limped up Crowe Gulch and down Mt. Esther to complete the loop. In general I feel pretty good today and may do a little hike today just to loosen up the sore muscles. The wet mud to my knees and wet shoes for the last 8 miles made the pads of my feet a little tender, but they feel much better today.

So the only thing left for a hike like this is Ring the Peak for my area. Maybe that will be my next I don't need no stinking shuttle. 62-65 miles and 11000-13000 AEG. I'm going to need to get in better shape. I will probably try to Mountain Bike it first to make sure I don't have any surprises like this hike. :D
I think I'll probably start picking off 14er's at this point because after yesterday I think most will seem easier than they would have before this hike. :)

A few notes:
Crags has more up and back hikers you see the same people coming up and back. The scenery is much nicer except for walking along the toll road for a period of time. The Barr trail is out of reach for a day hike for many. In quizzing people on the way down yesterday and doing it as day hike 99% either hike it one way and get a ride down or stay at barr camp overnight and hike it from Barr Camp and back and either finish it or stay another night at Barr Camp and go down. It has interesting geology and views of the Springs. It is rougher, longer, and significantly more elevation gain than the Crags.

Early Bird gets the worm.
About 9 hours after yesterday's hike I loaded up the truck for another. I'm not sure what I was thinking cause my pads are a hurtin' after 10,000+ Aeg in a little over a day. Anyway, I had this one planned and this was the only day that T-storms weren't forecasted. In reading up about Pikes Peak there have been a few lighting strike fatalities. I was the second one into the parking lot which allowed me pretty good solitude. The owner of the other car got up and chatted for a few while I filtered water at Barr Camp they had been staying there for the last 2 days. The camp wasn't even open and I didn't start running in to people until about 2 miles from the top. I carried as little water etc. as possible to make the hike more manageable, but it was tough anyway. I didn't have much difficulty with altitude, but I did find myself a little emotional at the memorial for the woman that passed away doing her 14th hike of Pikes Peak at 88. Not because I was sad, but because who wouldn't want to go doing something you love after a long life. Or maybe it was the altitude :D The scenery above the tree line was much better than expected and I really found this hike cathartic. The right scenery, pushing through exhaustion, probably a little altitude mixed in. I paid a lot of attention to fueling and hydrating myself properly which really helped. There is a lot of history as well.
That all disappeared when I was up top and the crazy cog railway tourists invaded. :sl: The last 3 miles I realized I missed nothing hiking it in the dark. Awesome hike. It challenged me as much mentally as physically. I picked a heck of a challenge for my first 14er.

:y: AWESOME DAY!
It started with my wife dropping me off on the highway 24 near the Manitou exit. I visited the Rainbow Falls picnic area on the way down. It would be very nice if it didn't seem to be a teenage hangout as evidenced by all the graffiti. :yuck: Then walked through Manitou and up Ruxton to do the Incline.
The plan was to do the incline to see what the hype was about and then find out where the Ring to Peak trail connects and follow it home. I was disappointed to find that it connects at the bottom of the incline and basically follows the 24 all the way to Cascade. Boo! So then I decided to connect to the Barr Trail up to the Barr Camp and find out if there was a trail leading to the Pikes Peak Toll road to connect up to the RTPT there. I packed everything I needed to Summit Pikes Peak if the need arose, but I'll get to that later.

The Incline:
I can't believe there is a club of people that do this thing everyday before work all year round. I'm sure they are in fantastic shape! 2100' AEG in 1 mile of railroad ties. With a false summit. My ego wouldn't let me be passed, but all I heard all the way up was negative exhausted people wondering why they were doing it and the occasional unprepared person puking on the side of the trail. All I could do was tell myself left right left right and look for footing because it is pretty rough in places. In fact, they don't really want people walking down it so the only bail out is .9 miles up where you can catch the Barr trail down. It made me question my fitness even though I have stayed in pretty good shape. I was told by a buddy whose brother got 4th place last year in the Pikes Peak Marathon that Apollo Ohno hopped it on one leg and ran down the Barr trail and then hopped it on the other leg during his training for the Olympics. :wlift: That's just Crazy! Even if I did this thing every day I could never find it fun.

Barr Trail to the Barr camp: I made pretty good time from the bottom of the incline to the Barr camp. It's roughly 4,000' elevation gain and the incline takes off about 1.5 miles of the 6 miles. I inquired about the conditions to the summit because there has been 3 rescues in 3 days and a lot of snow and I was supposed to do this on Saturday with a person who is fit, but lacks a lot of hiking experience and planned to take the Cog railway down. They said the trail is covered for the last 4 miles and knee to waist post holing in snow for those 4 miles. I had my spikes, but didn't bring the snowshoes, but I got to the camp so early I considered it. I asked them about trails to the toll road and they said the Elk run is 5 miles and gets close, but is post holing for the last mile. I decided to do this back home.

Barr camp provides bunks for $20 a night has food and water that can be filtered from a spring. FYI

The people manning the Barr camp do not know anything. FYI :o

Had I known on my way to my house that I would be post holing roughly 8 miles on and off during the trip home, I would have done the summit and gotten a ride from my wife from the same point she dropped me off when she got off work. :D But I would have missed out on the Views! Views! Views! and seeing a completely different side of the mountain in utter Solitude! :y:

I took the Elk Run trail to the 652 to the Oil creek Tunnel trail and from then on until I reached the RTPT to Mt. Esther I'd be lying if I gave you any names. :D In looking at my gps topo I passed most notably the Devil's Playground. I thought the oil creek Tunnel might get me to the toll road, but it dumped me into a trail that traversed albeit through snow a huge expanse of granite gravel slopes across several peaks. It was at this point that I decided to consult the gps. I looked at Poi's for reference. What I wanted was Crowe Gulch to find RTPT and the Pikes Peak highway. Unfortunately, I could not get the highway to populate. It was 4 miles away through trail less wilderness. Glen Cove picnic area was .68 of a mile away, but on the otherside of one of the Peaks I was looking at. Probably 1.5 miles and some elevation gain on this trail. I knew it had to be close to the toll road, but my fear was that it would be a 5-13 mile walk to Crowe Gulch on the toll road or a hitch hike. I opted for the 4 miles through trail less wilderness and on looking at the track when I loaded it for stats I made the right choice. :D I did have to navigate several drainages and peaks to finally get to the road. It rained for the last 3 miles, but I didn't mind. I got home at 5:15 for a nice day. Just short of 10 hrs. from the time I started the Incline. It does mean that a summit from my house would be about 30 miles so I think maybe i'll do the Barr trail the first time. About half of the day was spent above 10,000' and a portion of that was above 11,000'. I felt pretty good considering I've only been home for a few days and it takes awhile after spending two weeks at sea level. My elevation gain and miles were just short of what doing the Barr trail would be and I was happy with how early I got home considering how much un tracked knee deep snow traversing I had to do. :D

I hiked a mile up the Barr trail which eventually makes it to the top. However, I was just killing time waiting for the cog train so I didn't (and probably could not given the recent snow) hike to the top without some aid climbing involving two diesel engines and a lot of swiss technology. Today was fantastic with no wind and 40-50 degrees on top. Would love to come back when I have time to make this hike.
