I took advantage of the cool morning to check out the Boulder Canyon trail between the Dutchman trail and Second Water trail. The southern end from the Dutchman trail is completely burned but the burn stops before you get to the Cavalry trail junction. This section was overgrown last year but not trouble seeing the trail now. The rest of the trail from before Cavalry trail to second Water trail is is good shape. I was hoping to find some hidden stuff in the burned section but the only things I saw were campsites and fire rings. I checked the once deep pools in the lower part of Needle Canyon but there is no water there at all. I hiked counter clockwise and stayed out of the sunlight until the turn for Battleship. I didn't see any other hikers until starting up Second Water trail and after that I saw hikers all the way back to the traillhead. A nice hike and I finished before 10:30am while it was still cool.

I turned 50 today and couldn't have asked for better weather. The heat broke with a nice storm front rolling in. I hit the trail about 10A and was ill prepared for rain. I had a lightweight wind breaker and a bunch of zip-lock bags for my important stuff.

Right away the burn smell hits you. The second thing is the massive amount of burned areas. The devastation was everywhere along each trail. Garden Valley and Hackberry Mesa both got hit hard. It's disappointing to see the large saguaros along the Hackberry ridge burned hurt the most. Thankfully the riparian area down towards Boulder Canyon was still green. It looks like the fire jumped over the green and worked its way up the other side.

Pretty good day for a hike. I got on the trail before 7:00 AM. Very few other people on the trails before almost noon. Then it picked up a bit. Boulder creek was flowing very nicely. After the first couple crossings, I just started walking through the stream.

I squeezed in a trip to Lower La Barge box. Figured it might be my last visit. It was pretty well flooded. And the smooth bottom of the pools were as slippery as ice. But it was still great to see.

The hedgehog cactus is starting to bloom. Beautiful purple flowers.

I skipped hiking a week to do some work so I needed to get a hike in before the AZT the following week. I had not hiked Boulder creek for a while so I gave it shot. Second Water is in the same shape as always. Easy going to Garden valley then a bit rocky down to Second Water Canyon before leveling off to Boulder Canyon. Boulder Canyon trail was narrow but easy to follow this time and there were a few campers along the way. The creek crossings were easy and there was a good amount of water. The Dutchman trail gets the most traffic so always good to go. The weather was great and it never really warmed up. There were several people out but it didn't seem crowded at any time. A good led stretcher to keep in shape.

This was my first day of an overnight backpacking trip. I started the first water trailhead I hiked on Second Water Trail. I went upstream on Boulder Canyon and then I camped in the valley where the Dutchman Trail intersect the Black Mesa Trail. I hiked out the next day in a separate track.

There was very little water this entire trip.

I hiked in a clockwise direction and upstream on Boulder Canyon. Encountered a hiker coming downstream, Boulder Canyon, who said last year it was nearly impossible with much water and overgrowth. He said this year it was much better and easily hiked.

0700 start. Took a clockwise loop around the boulevard trails out of First Water. Stating the obvious, there is no water on this loop. I took the Stoker trail down to Second Water Spring. It was dry also. There are a couple of frog pools surrounding the reeds below the spring, but not worth filtering unless you’re desperate.

What I like about this big loop hike are the sights along the way. There are wilderness monuments around just about every bend, keeping the excitement level high, tempting you towards something more challenging along the way. Like Battleship Mountain. A hike in the Supes is always a good time, especially in the morning. Just need some rain to make it spectacular.

The trails are in better shape than expected. Occasional cat’s claw will nip at the shins on Boulder Canyon but it’s not overgrown. Those headed for Battleship can wear shorts. The rest of the hike along Boulder Canyon trail isn’t bad. Dutchman is good all the way back to the trailhead, with a wee bit of thorny stuff grabbing at you in the last (first) couple of miles.

For a Saturday with nice weather, I thought I might see more people hiking. I saw about a dozen total, most within a mile of the trailhead coming and going. Only a handful of cars when I started and finished.

Slept in on Saturday and waited for the cooler temps on Sunday. Only a about 5 other scars at the Trailhead at 6:40am. I could see rain in the distance but it didn't look bad. It was cool with a breeze and I didn't get rain until Garden Valley. Mostly sprinkles but rain for about 5 minutes 3 separate times between Second Water and Boulder Canyon trails. Second Water trail is good Boulder Canyon trail was easy to follow (creek crossings obscured by the high grass) until about a 1/4 mile passed the Cavalry Trail junction. The Boulder Canyon trail could use some work between Cavalry & Dutchman but if you pay attention you'll make it through ok. Clouds kept the sun off for most of the hike. Several hikers out enjoying the perfect weather but no crowds.

Given the forecast, I was expecting rain and hoping to see a lot of running water in the drainages. I was disappointed on that front and had to settle for a day in the drenching humidity. That said, while the moisture stayed in the sky, it made for some spectacular cloud scenery, which was the highlight of the hike.

Another long weekend run. Last week was 11 miles through the city, average pace of 10:09, and this weekend... lol.

5AM start from Horse lot (empty), took Hackberry Springs Trail all the way to Garden Valley. Was crazy humid (82F with 45%, ugh), otherwise pleasant trail running conditions. Garden Valley was muddy and featured a sleeping diamondback that slept through my nearby footfall. Drop down Second Water was slow.

Boulder Canyon is when things got unhinged. Shaded for most of the way due to the early start, it's just not good for running. Had to walk the boulder-y crossings and there was a lot of catclaw & cacti overgrowth to navigate. By the last few miles I was alternating running / walking every five or so.

Dutchman Trail was a relief, though by now I was running low on steam. Grumbled up to Parker's and then alternated running / walking the rest of the way. Never did see anyone on the trails, even with 5 vehicles in the First Water lot. There was enough sweat collected in my shoes to raisin my feet, ugh humidity.

Lesson learned: I usually classify trails as "easy" or "challenging" by how much route-finding & obstacles there are. Trail running definitely requires a higher degree of trail cleanliness than hiking. Also humidity sucks.

An old favorite. Really terrible about the fire damage.. wow. Its always nice to come up the hill to garden valley and how green it is. I never thought I would miss cholla so much. Surprised to see so much water in Boulder Creek. Not just pools but really a lot of flow. Passed several groups camping along the trail, as usual. Trail is, as usual, in good shape. Love the back and forth. Didnt see anyone until Parkers Pass and First Water where the people, horses, and dogs all were hiking and playing in the water. It was a great day and a nice taste of the Supes to be inspired to go out the next weekend for a bigger bite.

Started at just before sunrise. First water road is in good shape. Water was flowing the whole way up Boulder Canyon. BCT has some extensive washouts in the lower section before Cavalry turnoff. Lots of folks out as you would expect.

Woke up before the sun came up and headed out to the First Water TH. Got there at 6:40 with several cars already in the parking lot. Got the headlamp out and off I went. With the sun not up and some wind it made it a bit chilly to start and of course I was wearing shorts. Finally got some sun over the mountain when I was near Second Water Spring. I've been in Boulder Canyon many times, however, I had not done the portion from Calvary to the Dutchman and I wanted to check that portion off so I headed up Second Water down to Boulder Canyon where I saw my first person of the day. He was headed up to Battleship for the 15th time or something like that. Continued down Boulder Canyon then jumped on the Dutchman to take it around and back up to the TH. Once I got past the Calvary junction it got pretty brushy and was much more of a boulder hop then I had thought, definitely a one and done for me. I was tempted to go explore Needle Canyon but the amount of brush was an instant turnoff so I decided against it. I hadn't hiked in the western Superstitions for about a year and I always forget how rocky they are; they beat the feces out of me feet. :( Only ended up seeing about a dozen people all day, definitely expected more on a Sunday but not complaining at all. I was hoping the newest update to RS would fix the crashing issue but it bit the dust twice on mem which is still much better then what it was.

Started out just after 7AM, a chilly start but warmed up quickly. I went counter clockwise this time and ran into some backpackers headed back out right away. There were a few small pools just after the Boulder Canyon turnoff and some small pools up in needle canyon further down. Lots of folks heading up Battleship today. Plenty of nice looking water along 2nd Water drainage.

Hiked :y: the First Water-Second Water-Boulder Canyon-Dutchman loop as a two night backpack adventure. Camped late Friday in Garden Valley. That whole area was torched with almost nothing left right now. Found quite a few pools of water in Second Water Canyon suitable for filtering. Boulder Canyon is the same as always and camped again near Palomino Mountain. Hiked out on the Dutchman where fire damage is bad in some places and non-existent in others. Made for a good weekend.

Lots of pooled water in the creek. Didn’t visit the actual spring.

Finally got out after a very, very bad week. Couldn't hike on Friday as I had to help a friend. Last week I barely hiked, so I wanted to go out for the day. I wanted something in the Supes, but the thought of a Saturday in the Supes sent shivers down my Spine as I really needed some solitude this week. But this Loop has been on my list for years and with our recent rain, I knew it would be a great time to do it. Every time Wally has done this loop, he runs into snakes and so water wasn't the only motivator. I was also missing the section of Boulder, from Cavalry to Dutchman, so that would be new territory. So I decided to brave the crowds and hope at some point, I'd be somewhere where I could have some quiet time. Knowing how Boulder Creek would most likely be flowing, I planned to just go ahead and get my feet wet. I didn't want to spend a ton of time and energy staying dry. I did take my Hiking Poles just in case the water was murky. Nothing worse than not seeing where your feet are landing and I wanted balance assistance if I needed it. Although the water turned out to be clear, I did use them for the crossings, mainly because I didn't want to fall and ruin the Camera. But in using them, I was reminded about how much I hate them. I like having my hands free, especially when trying to use the Camera. I didn't pull them out until Boulder Creek and I put them away at the Dutchman Junction as I knew the Dutchman crossings wouldn't be an issue. I took a couple of long breaks on this Hike, trying to heal the mind and it was good. I was out from Sunrise to Sunset and it's exactly what I needed. Although only 12 miles, the body told me that I had done some work, and that was needed too.

I arrived at the First Water TH at 6:30 and couldn't believe the cars. I think there were 5 spots left. Here we go. Lots of Campers with kids in Garden Valley, but I lost a few other Hikers there. I messed around a bit in the valley, but no chance for bird photos. Way too much noise going on. Explored a bit in Second Water Canyon and then hit the Boulder Junction. Lost a few more Hikers there. Took a break along the Creek and then did the Boulder Creek stretch. The Water was cold, but not freezing and it actually felt pretty good. As the day wore on, it got pretty warm out and I actually thought about taking a swim. Lots of nice pools! Something in my gut told me not to get that wet and Nature proved the gut right. 45 minutes before I hit Dutchman, the clouds started coming in and the temp felt like it dropped a bit. It was chilly by the time I hit the Escape, so I was glad to not be wet.

Lost a few more Hikers at the Battleship/Lower Box Junction. From then on, I still saw a few, including a Trail Runner who started at First Water. Don't know how they can run those rocky trails! Ran into a large Boy Scout Troop towards the end of Boulder and for LosDosSloFolks, half of that Troop was girls. Good to see them out. I'm not sure I've ever seen a Girl Scout Troop anywhere outside of Civilization. I took a couple of breaks in Boulder by the water. The sound is so soothing to the soul, and my soul needed it.

Got to the Dutchman and at the 2nd major Crossing there (I think it's West Boulder) I took a long break. Took off the wet shoes and socks and dried the feet in the now intermittent sun. Had a snack and recharged for the last 4 miles. Put on dry socks and headed on out. It was pretty amazing. At 5:00, the Dutchman was almost entirely deserted. 3 people in four miles. That was it. It was the most solitude I had all day. The Light and Clouds were getting pretty amazing, so I stopped often for Photos. The Sunset didn't look like it would be much, but at the very end, the west sky lit on fire. Unfortunately, I hadn't made it to the last water crossing on the Dutchman, so I only saw a bit of it peeking over the hills. Made the Escape right at dark. I'm glad I picked this for this week. Although I would have been happier with a lot less people, all of that water was very cool. I timed this one pretty well I think. It was a good day finally.

Fauna: No Snakes! :( Just Lizards, Tadpoles that are almost Frogs, several Male Cardinals, American Kestrel and a few other bird Species. Seems to be a lot of Cottontails this year.

Trail Conditions:
Second Water - Muddy in places and the horses are really beating it up. I think I counted 3 Water crossings. Boulder Canyon Trail - It's in good shape until about the Cavalry Trail, then it could use a bit of love. But it's not terrible. There is, however, half of a giant Saguaro down lengthwise on the trail about mid way through. I put a waypoint on my track for it, just in case someone wants the location. There is a way around. Lots of Water in the crossings, but if you spend the time going up and down the Creek, you can probably stay dry, if you're quick, got good tread and balance skills. Dutchman - Quite a bit of standing water and mud on the trail still. Horses are impacting, but not as badly as Second Water. After West Boulder, not another water crossing until after Parker Pass and then there's about 7.

GPS Track. Don't use it, it's a mess. I don't even want to post it, but it has the down Saguaro Waypoint on it. And it's the only way I can save a Route now. My Mileage and AEG is a guess based on two sets of numbers. The original numbers and a cleaned up version that drastically changed the numbers. I also went by what others are averaging for this Hike.

Photos: Don't hold your Breath. You'll be blue by Tuesday and they probably still won't be up yet. I took a LOT and I've only had time for one initial viewing and delete pass.

Patches here and there, but I' surprised at really how sparse it is still. Only a few poppies. Mostly Dichelostemma capitatum and surprisingly Indian Paintbrush. A few Owl Clover near Second Water Canyon. Some of the Brittlebush up high on Hackberry Mesa is getting showy. Some Popcorn Flowers and other small flowers around too.

Did the loop CCW today. Dutchman is muddy in spots and flowing in others. Boulder Canyon is in good shape, not too much traffic though before the Battleship turnoff. Lots of water at every crossing. 2nd water spring area has totally changed. The deep little pool with fish is all gone.

With the Superstitions opened back up, I wanted to get back on Battleship Mountain and decided to make it a longer loop. From First Water I went clockwise to Battleship and then to Black Top Mesa with a stop at the LaBarge Box, before taking Dutchman back to the trailhead.

Started at 5:20am and was the second car in the lot. Used a headlamp for a mile or two. Was in the dark or shade until I climbed up onto Battleship's back end. Saw a small tarantula on the connector trail between Boulder and LaBarge Canyons. The giant cairns that used to mark where that trail leaves Boulder Canyon are gone.

Only person I saw all day was on the summit. Climbed down and stopped at the LaBarge Box before heading back to Boulder and up to Dutchman. Lots of frogs and soon-to-be frogs in the first few pools in the box.

Took Dutchman to Bull Pass and climbed up to the trail for Black Top Mesa. The spur to the top was in as good condition as any on the day. Summit was breezy, which was a blessing with temperatures rising to around body temperature.

Had to take care to apportion my water on Dutchman. Just about ran out and felt pretty dehydrated. Temps approached 100, but there was a solid breeze the whole trip down Dutchman. Saw a diamondback about two miles from the trailhead that charged at me while I tried to take pictures.

No water in any of the creeks except in Second Water Canyon and the LaBarge Box. Not sure any of it'd be good to drink when filtered.
