A summer flameout medley of Arch and Atlatl Rocks, the Petrified Logs Loop, Crazy Hill, White Domes, finishing off on the east side with Balancing and Elephant Rocks. We're not going to miss the extreme record breaking heat, but at least it conditioned us for this fun little side trip. 8) Blew through the Zion circus, which won't ever quite measure up to the Grand. Dang you, wreck.gov randomized distribution!

On the way home from a weekend conference in Las Vegas, we decided to spend a few hours exploring Valley of Fire State Park. Super cool place. Kind of a combination of Sedona and Zion NP with splashes of the Esplanade mixed in.

This loop combined two trails--the Fire Wave Loop with the White Domes loop. The geology here is fascinating with some nice, though short, slot canyons along the southern perimeter.

We went to the Sphere while in Vegas, which was kind of cool, but way overpriced. Spend $15 for the Valley of Fire State Park instead. A lot more bang for your buck!

On our way from Las Vegas to Zion we stopped off in Valley of Fire for a little more hiking. In the morning we hiked the Fire Wave and then the White Dome loop. We arrived early and went straight to the Fire wave Trail, we heard this hike fills up fast and to get parking arrive early. These are easy hikes, more like a stroll. We continued on the Fire Wave to White Dome so we wouldn't have to drive over to the White Dome parking area.

Fire Wave was neat but I think the walk through the slot canyons was the highlight. Lots of people encountered along the trail. Trail signs are a bit confusing and the park trail map wasn't much help. most guidance was from others on the trail. This is a must do hike but don't expect a workout other than your photo finger clicking pictures. Arrived back at the trail head around noon to a zoo of people trying to find parking. We will head over to Elephant Rock before heading to St George, Utah

Into the tourist trap part of the park. Managed to find a parking spot and decided to start with the seven wonders loop, with an option to walk over to White Domes if I felt like it. Never knew this place was on the radar as an international attraction, but a vast majority of the conversation I overheard was in various foreign languages (more French than I would've expected). The loop itself was cool, although I'm not sure I followed the official route up past Thunderstorm Arch.

The White Domes slot canyon was cool, though short. I also came to the conclusion that international tourists hold very little regard for pedestrians while behind the wheel.

Our second VOF hike. Saw the "movie set" first (left from parking lot) then went into the slot canyon and back up around to the White Dome Road. The first 1/4 mile were uphill in the sand.

This is my first time to the area. Lots of colorful rocks and sand. Mostly people drive around and look, so not as many people are hiking. To be fair, it was unseasonably hot, and as the day progressed, it was a bit hot. Still, we enjoyed the hike, complete with the movie set.

We were in Vegas for the weekend and decided to check out the Valley of Fire. Stopped at several of the scenic stops along the way, including the iconic road, for pictures.

Started the hike at the Fire Wave trailhead and did a double loop that combined several trails. The first stop was the Fire Wave, which resembles the Wave at Coyote Buttes, but smaller. We waited for the group ahead of us to take pictures, then took a few of our own, then moved on.

We proceeded down the trail, which passed through 2 slot canyons, as well as numerous picturesque boulders. Our trail then intersected with the south end of the White Domes trail, which we followed through the White Domes canyon. We then looped around the west end of the trail which ascended out of the canyon to the White Domes trailhead, which was packed with people. We continued along the trail, then walked along the promontory just east of the trail, which had excellent views of the surrounding canyons. We climbed down from the promontory and rejoined the crowds as the trail descended into the canyon. We checked out the old movie set from the 1966 movie The Professionals, but this area was very crowded as well.

Just past the movie set, the crowds vanished. We continued to the trail junction and this time went north on the Seven Wonders trail, marveling at all the colors. The Fire Cave was the best of the Seven Wonders, and we spent some time checking it out. There were also several other smaller caves, a long arch, and the Crazy Hill which we climbed around on. We then circled back to the car. On the way out, we saw a lone bighorn sheep ambling parallel to us.

Overall, this is a fascinating area, with beautiful, colorful rocks, several slot canyons, multiple caves, several arches, and numerous other fascinating geological structures. The entire double loop was only 3.8 miles, but felt like a lot more than that because we saw and experienced so much in that short span. The Fire Wave is amazing, but likely to be crowded (we were lucky that only one group was there before us.) The White Domes trailhead was extremely crowded and the stench within about 20 yards of the outhouses was awful. The crowds were completely gone just past the movie set (about 0.3 miles from the trailhead) and we saw only one other group on the Seven Wonders trail. Definitely worthwhile.

Did this hike after doing the Fire Wave. Wife wanted to cool off in the car so I did this solo. Nice loop. Would have liked to share it with the wife. Went clockwise which is the best way to go when addressing the elevation change. Some pretty cool scenery and a short slot canyon make it noteworthy. A sign states that 45 movie/TV/commercial scenes have been shot at this location. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the park.

We only had a half of a day in this park which was not nearly enough. Also it was crazy busy! There was a lot of beauty that I’d love to explore…. On a random weekday in non prime season.

Finally made it out to Valley of Fire, and really enjoyed the scrambling around White Domes. The colors and formations are incredible. Sadly, the skies were overcast and didn't offer good lighting for photos. Saw a few bighorn towards the end of the hike.

I loved this hike. It was short but you got to see a lot of the rock formations.

Starting at Beehives, a bit of road, then full Prospect Trail, White Dome Loop, and back. This course was just as tough as I remembered it from past years. Beautiful, but tough. Running on the Prospect Trail was slightly less challenging than last year, but still many areas of loose ankle-breaker rocks. It was pleasant to have much of the course in a nice shady canyon, and temperatures were quite pleasant. As an added bonus, the deep sand was slightly firmer than usual on White Dome Loop due to recent rain.

Usually, my wife & I have our annual romantic Las Vegas visit earlier in December, but this year we could not swing it until Christmas week.

The Prospect Trail is short, only 4.6 miles, with not much elevation change, so I planned to also do the White Domes Loop at Prospect’s north end, then hike Fire Wave at the end. Besides the exercise, I figured that would give me enough material for a decent length hike video. I should have known better: Valley of Fire State Park absolutely loaded with amazing rock formations. 😳

It had been a chilly 41℉ at breakfast time in Las Vegas, but by the time I started hiking at 9:30 a.m., it had warmed up enough that I could remove my hoodie, and use exercise-generated body heat to keep me warm.

Four tenths of a mile north of Valley of Fire Highway, the jeep trail turns east. Though Prospect Trail continues north, I first headed east to check out some whazzits. (A ‘whazzit’ is why I call an interesting object I see, but cannot identify, on satellite view.) The whazzits ended up being a large fiberglass water tank and a inoperative pump house. There were some other bits & pieces laying about, including what looked like a collapsed antenna. I wonder what the pump house’s purpose was? Besides simply pumping water. 😏

The hills just west of the trail look like old ocean sediment rather than the cliff / mountain’s orange sandstone. I guess Valley of Fire’s orange formations were used for the original, and much better, “Total Recall” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, but they reminded me of Bedrock, home of the Flintstones.

As I descended from the saddle, I was passed by three other hikers, because I was taking so many photos. (Close to 200 on the day!) I caught up to them around the two mile mark. As I began to pass them, they brought my attention to group of four male desert bighorn sheep: Three mature rams, and one young adult, with partially curved horns: https://vimeo.com/494095071 .

One of the things I’ve noticed about the terrain in Nevada is that it is very stark and barren relative to Arizona. Still very beautiful though, especially in Valley of Fire. Nevada has much less brush or cacti: No cottonwood, palo verde, saguaro, cholla (of any variety), etc. The only grab & stabs I saw were some desiccated prickly pear and a few fishhook barrel cactus. Of course, I did not see the only two catclaw on Prospect Trail. 😖

Near the end of Prospect Trail, 4.4 miles into the hike, I encountered the only confusing part of the route. To my right was a small slot canyon. To my left, a faint trail headed out of the wash. I saw no white guide poles, so I started to follow the faint trail. I did not go far, before doubling back, into the small slot canyon (which is the correct route).

There were scads of people on the White Dome Loop, so I finished the last ¾ of a mile as quick as possible. The White Dome Trailhead was full to overflowing. As was every other parking area the entire 6.7 mile length of Mouse’s Tank Rd., from the White Dome Trailhead to the Visitor Center, back on Valley of Fire Highway.

p.s. My wife reports that the White Dome TH toilets are disgusting, even worse than the toilets at the AZT trailhead outside Pine. 🤢

Starting at Beehives, a bit of road, then full Prospect Trail, White Dome Loop, and back. This course was just as tough as I remembered it from last year. Well-marked and beautiful, but tough. Recent rains made "running" on the Prospect Trail particularly challenging, as most of the sand and small pebbles had been washed away, leaving a mine field of loose ankle-breaker rocks. It was pleasant to have much of the course in a nice shady canyon, though, so it's hard to complain. As an added bonus, the deep sand was dampish and much firmer than usual on White Dome Loop.

Made the rookie mistake of following other runners instead of flagging and got to do a bonus challenging 20' down climb. As payback for this shortcut, we then went the wrong way and added 0.2 mi to our route.

The Prospect Trail follows an old road, then a steep-walled canyon through red sandstone cliffs. Some scrambling required.
The White Domes Loop climbs up in loose sand, then sweeps around through a narrow canyon to circle the White Domes sandstone formation.

Combine these two trails, plus some off-trail action and beautiful weather, and you get a very tough half-marathon course.
I will have to come back and enjoy the Prospect Trail at a more leisurely pace - very scenic and well worth the effort.

Spent the day at Valley of Fire State Park. I had my kids with me, so while we did a lot of walking around, White Domes Loop was the only trail I got to hike in its entirety. The trail starts at the south end of the parking lot at the very end of White Domes Road. We headed south on the trail, which, after a small rise the the beginning, goes downhill through a canyon. The trail surface is super fine sand, which is kind of neat, although it is a bit more of a workout than a harder surface would be. My kids loved the sand, although it can be a little slippery where the sand is drifting across the rocks. You'll reach the remains of an old movie set from the 60's and continue south just beyond the movie set, then turn west. Going west was my favorite part of the trail, you'll walk through a slot canyon, which I always like. Once out of the slot canyon, the trail turns north, then east again back to the parking lot. Almost every part of this trail had opportunities for great pictures. The entire park was fantastic, I can't wait to return to hike more of the trails.
