Nice easy run to try something a little different. Started from Phillips TH, did Moonlight -> San Tan (north) -> Dynamite -> Goldmine -> Littleleaf. Had to walk up Goldmine because it's so silly steep. Most of the trails were sparsely populated, tho there was a surprising number of hikers going up Goldmine from the south. Always assumed the north approach was more popular. Oh, and there were some wedding photos being taken near the Dynamite / Goldmine intersection that I may have spoiled. Good running :)

Damp ground, no meaningful damage to trail. Made great time this morning (sweat a ton due to humidity) and was able to do 2 summits without stopping and kept my heart rate below 160. Think next time I'll try 3!

Ruck w/ kids, double saddle. Middle child was carrying a 10lb in his pack and then decided it was too heavy, so I won 30lbs on the second summit.

Ruck w/ kids. We did it at the end of a long, hot day outside doing yardwork, so 1.5 saddles felt plenty.

Solo birthday ruck. Two saddles was plenty to burn enough calories for turtle cheesecake dessert :)

Solo ruck. Felt reasonably good for two saddles, though I had to pause for a few too many breath breaks on the second. Impatient for the day I can do three.

Wally and I hit the trail around 5:30. The new parking area is still not open. Kingsnake said something about this in February. Wally and I went out Dynamite to San Tan and back on Goldmine. We stopped by the marked graves on the way out Goldmine. I believe we had shade for 3/4 of the hike! 👍😁. Great weather and company made for an, enjoyable outing! Thanks Wally! Like HAZ, you rock!!

Denny picked the hike. He wanted to take me to an area I had not been to. I did hike in the area about twenty years ago before it had official trails so it was new.
The trail Denny chose was Dynamite. There were no explosions so that was good. The San Tan area has the same feel as South Mountain for me.
The trailhead had several vehicles at 5:30am. At least the hikers out there are smart enough to start early. We saw several other hikers along the way.
The descent down the Goldmine trail was steep. I never thought Denny would lead me down a slippery slope. I guess you never know.
An interesting hike not far from home. I'll probably had to hike some of the other trails just to check them off if nothing else. Thanks for the hike Denny.

Ruck w/ two kids. Started from Goldmine TH, left kids in dust near the grave (pretty sure it's not haunted), made it to the saddle in quick order. 20lbs felt much more doable. Passed kids on the way down (they were cooking!), started up for the second climb, and was feeling pretty puke-y when they started yelling encouragement down at me... from the top of the mountain. They didn't stop at the saddle. With that encouragement I _had_ to finish up, so I pushed up and exchanged some sick dabs. Victory Sonic slushes once we eventually rolled downhill.

Ruck w/ eldest son. Started at Goldmine TH, made it to the saddle once, doubled back to the start of the climb, and then only went up halfway. 40lbs was way too much to start, gonna come back w/ less.

It’s a long drive from Sunnyslope to Queen Creek, so it’s been three years since I last hiked here. I was hoping to at last find some of the brittlebush, creosote and African daisy currently blooming in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. I hiked Dynamite, San Tan, Moonlight and Goldmine counter-clockwise from the still under construction Goldmine TH.

Dynamite is rated moderate, but the elevation gain is barely noticeable. No more than slightly rocky, in spots. The few saguaro are young, and I saw no flowers. Nice views from the Sparks bench.

San Tan is somehow rated “moderate-difficult”. Maybe that is for mountain bikes at the south end of the park? I dunno. At the north end, it is wide, smooth and fast. Also popular. As are all the trails in the middle of the park. Though it loops around most of the park, I was only on it for a mile.

Moonlight Trail is rated moderate. Really, though, it is easy: West-to-east, Moonlight rises only 130 ft. in 1⅓ miles, ending at the welcome center. Heading west, it would be a zippy mountain bike ride. Still no flowers, but I did enjoy the saguaro.

I was wearing my Camelbak, but feeling a bit parched, so I stopped in the welcome center for a Gatorade and a water. I chugged the Gatorade before I even made it to the cash register. 😅

Goldmine is rated difficult and “hazardous” — which is fair for its middle third. The mile from the welcome center to San Tan Trail is a wide, smooth and zippy downhill mountain bike run. So, keep your head on a swivel. North of San Tan, Goldmine is steep & broken. Not bad hiking, but I sure would not ride it!

There’s two saddles, both with benches. At the second, more northerly bench, there are several informal trails. The one to the north is a steep little climb to a small hilltop outlook. I elected to save it for a future hike.

Descending north from the second bench is where I believe Goldmine gets its rating: The initial 1/10 mile drops a whopping 170 ft. And it is slippery. After that initial drop, Goldmine "levelsout" out at 400 ft. in the next 1/2 mile.

I arrived back at Goldmine TH about 12:30 p.m. The temp was 75℉, but it felt warmer. Supposed to be in the 90s next week! 🥵

The rest of the Valley is at least showing brittlebush, creosote and African daisy. Here? Nada. Not a single bloom. 😕

I started at the Wagon Wheel trailhead.hadn’t been to this trailhead in awhile. Was surprised to see it full at 5:50am. 😱🤦‍♂️ A portable office and 4 portapotties there as well. It seems they are building a new parking lot. Looks like Wagon Wheel will dead end at the parking lot in the future. When you take the first part of Goldmine to get to Dynamite you can see Goldmine is rerouted over by the graveyard so it’s not a detour anymore. It is the trail.
I took Dynamite trail out. It is in great shape! Had a mixture of dog walkers, hikers, and runners. Took a left when I got to San Tan and took it over to merge with Goldmine. San Tan was good for the short part I did. Mountain bikers started showing up in this area. Took Goldmine back to the car. Goldmine is rocky but not bad from this side. Going down the north side is rocky and loose until you get to the base of the mountain. Nice little workout. If you don’t like the loose stuff Dynamite would be good for an out and back! Had shade for over half the hike. Very enjoyable outing.

I had never been to the San Tan Regional Park before so I decided to head out there today. I inadvertently took a couple of lefts when I should have gone right and wound up outside of the park. Before I discovered my error I somehow wound up on a summit as I made my way back to the park. Hopefully I will do better as the year unfolds.

This was supposed to be another weekend of hitting the AZT, but then on Thursday last week I tripped while jogging and smacked my knee on the ground pretty hard. Friday morning it was still sore and swollen so I decided to call off the original plan. Did this as a backup hike since I haven't been down to that park in 2.5 years.

Started from the Goldmine TH at the north end. The parking lot is finally finished and there are more than enough spaces, as well as porta-johns. the full $7 fee is in effect but the envelopes are right at the trail, so when you get one you have to go back to your car to put the tear off stub back on your dashboard.

I took the Dynamite Trail to the San Tan, then did that full trail counter-clockwise and the Goldmine Trail to finish the loop back to Dynamite and then back to the car. I would have saved some mileage staying on Goldmine over the pass, but I wasn't in the mood for the elevation gain and loss. Going downhill on the north side is actually more of pain than the uphill part. my knee was fine and I likely could have done the originally planned hike, but this wasn't as remote and gave some bailout options if the knee acted up.

Flowers are starting to dry out a bit, but still a lot of them and a lot of color. Less poppies and more brittlebush, so still very yellow. Equal mix of hikers, trail runners and bikers. Very busy overall.
