This was a pleasant little hike out of Upper Buck Spring Canyon. We continued on from the cabin area along the Barbershop Trail to Coyote Spring, which we were hoping would be a nice turn around point and water source for Dot, but as it turns out there was as much mud as water and no pools of any substantive depth. Nevertheless, there was just enough water along the hike for Dot and just enough shade and wind to keep her cool throughout the day. We did not see anyone while hiking and in general the rim was kind of quiet for a Sunday. We drove in from the east and continued west for a full tour of the rim road. That paved section of the 300 sure is nice. The stretches of forest through here always impress me, such a nice assortment of conifers and older growth trees, along with some giant Gambel oaks and, or white oaks.

I headed up to the Rim today to see if there were any bigtooth maples in their autumn glory, but came away disappointed. I have done this hike the last couple of years right about this date and there was a lot of fall color, but not this year. There was a bit of color, but it was well past prime.

It was still a pleasant hike, but it wasn't as colorful as normal.

Coming from the east, Rim Road 300 is paved to just past the turn to Bear Canyon Lake, so I only had to travel 10 miles of dirt on the Rim Road. It looked they had recently graded FR 137, and it was in much better shape than my prior drives on it.

The head of Yeager Canyon resembles a nerve cell. I started down the mild eastern “dendrite” at 9:45 a.m. It was uncluttered, with a mild grade. No flowers. Only mylar balloon of the day. I found two capped segments of 1″ PVC sticking out of the ground. No indication as to their purpose. At the second one, I made a 90° left turn, hiked 50 yds., then made a 90° right, to get back on the low line.

I reached the bottom of the canyon at ¾ mile mark, without having to negotiate any final cliff or pour. In the next 2½ miles, I may have ducked one log. I never had to low crawl. No real ankle breaker rocks. No large boulders to scramble. Plenty of bracken fern and corn lily, but no grab & stabs or tripper vines. I wouldn’t say it was smooth sailing, but it was relatively mild.

I was unsure exactly where — if at all — Cabin Loop crossed the canyon. I had heard it was indistinct, overgrown. All I knew is that it should be around 3¼ miles into my hike. Accordingly, at the three mile mark, I began scanning for bail points. I saw two animal tracks and several numbered metal tags — 70, 83, 84 — nailed into trees. (No idea …)

I needn’t have worried: Cabin Loop was obvious, signed, foot trail.

I was hoping Buck Springs Cabin(s) would be open, but no such luck. Maybe being locked is why they are in such good condition? The larger cabin had gas grill on its porch. No idea if it worked. 🚫🌭

The check dam had a large pool above, and good flow below.

The Lower Buck Spring aspens were surrounded by a critter-proof unbarbed mesh fence. Unfortunately, the v-gate was also wired shut. Oh well.

From the v-gate, I spun 180° to pick up FR 9714Z, which is blocked for vehicle use by boulders. I walked right through. I could have easily enough hiked along the edge of the Buck Springs Canyon prairie, but I was enjoying the shade 50 yds. inside the treeline.

The prairie is protected by two fenced enclosures. The "road" skipped the first and entered the second. The gate was unlocked, so in I went. I was nonplussed to find the gate at the south end was wired shut. I worked my way along the fenceline to a collapsed section, stepped across, then rejoined the decommissioned road.

The Upper Buck Spring pipe was dripping fast. I lost the faint road after that. No problem, it was a mild bushwhack up to FR 137. It was mid-afternoon, so I skipped a planned diversion to the Holder Cabin site.

We heard that this was a good hike for fall colors. There were fall colors throughout the first quarter mile, but they are well past their peak, and most of the leaves are on the ground. Beyond the first quarter mile, there were no fall colors, other than a few solitary aspens that had shed most of their leaves already. There were a lot of pines, so the area was very green. There are some large fenced-off areas in the canyon which are protecting sensitive wetlands, with well-used trails on the west side of the fences.

We looped back a slightly different route in an attempt to see some fall colors, but there were none there either. Pleasant day, 80° in the sun, cooler in the shade, overall mediocre hike. We still had fun, because we always do. After finishing, we drove to a little spot a few miles away that always has an array of fall colors, and it didn't disappoint, although those trees were well past their peak too.

A pretty stunning morning under the maples. I really wanted to make it to the cabin, but that would have meant no Blanco and after assessing our options, I determined that getting him out for a “hike” would be more fulfilling for me than seeing the cabin.

A beautiful morning out in all regards. I will put the rest of this hike on the todo list for the summer. We hiked as far as the Upper Spring and then explored a few of the draws along the route.

This is the second consecutive year that I did this hike, and it was the second consecutive year that I did it 2 days behind @The_Eagle.

After leaving our parking spot we came across some nice bigtooth maples right off the bat. They had some nice vivid color that was enhanced by the bright sunshine. We then had a nice stroll through upper Buck Spring Canyon, which was more like a meadow. We took a break at the Buck Springs Cabins, and then went on a short section of the cabin loop to another maple grove just off of the U-Bar Trail. We then reversed course to get back to where I parked.

Route Scout went a bit haywire when it recorded the distance -- the GPS track makes it look like there was a satellite miscommunication in a couple of places. I reduced the distance to match what I recorded when I did the hike last year.

Synopsis
This was a nice hike -- I enjoy hiking through Upper Buck Springs Canyon. There were a couple of nice pockets of maples to see, and I was not disppointed there. There was some nice foliage to see on the way out also -- I drove in on Rim Road 300 from the east.

There were some nice bigtooth maples that were close to peak, but they were perhaps slightly past peak. We did not see all that many aspens, but the ones that we saw were at peak foliage.

Our yearly fall color hike for Deb's Birthday weekend. The 21-mile drive in from the west on the Rim Road was easily the smoothest ever. It's like a superhighway all the way to FR321. Active logging is still going on, so keep an eye out for their trucks. I passed three of them during the day, always in narrow spots. The first 1/10 mile on FR 137 is rocky and rough and not suitable for low-clearance sedans.

The colors have never disappointed on this hike, and this year was no exception. The initial descent into the draw leading to Upper Buck Springs was vibrant. We made our way down to the cabin for a short break.

On the way back, I explored some new side draws, and none of them disappointed.

I'll be back again next year.

I had been thinking of heading up to the Rim to check out the fall foliage, and upon seeing a triplog from @The_Eagle a couple of days ago I decided to go.

I actually did 2 hikes:
1) Maverick Canyon
2) Upper Buck Spring/Cabin Loop

I first went to the Maverick Canyon hike. It turns out that most of the maples here are past prime -- probably by a week or more. I saw some close to where I parked that were ok, but it was a bit disappointing to be a dollar short and a day late.

I then went over to Upper Buck Spring Canyon. Here some of the maples were at or near peak, but others were a bit past peak. Still this area was worth taking a look at. Most of the maples were within a half mile where I parked, but I walked through the canyon over to the Buck Springs cabins. It was very delightfall hike through the canyon -- the tread was great and it was mostly flat.

I had lunch at the cabin, and then decided to hike a bit of the cabin loop. I took the Barbershop Trail to the U-Bar Trail, and then hiked a bit on the U-Bar Trail. I was getting ready to turn around and go back, but saw some maple tree foliage a bit off the trail, and decided to investigate. I am glad that I did, because this area -- which I dubbed "Maple City" -- had the nicest foliage that I saw on the day. There were a good many mature trees that were near peak.

I imagine that one could hike on the cabin loop right now and come across some nice maple groves.

I think that the maple foliage on the Rim will play out over the next few days. In another week or so hopefully there will be some nice foliage in some of the canyons beneath the rim.

Mileage and elevation gain for these 2 hikes is below:
Maverick Canyon: 1.98 miles with 295 feet of elevation gain
Buck Spring Canyon/Cabin Loop: 8.3 miles with 1,198 feet of elevation gain

Foliage was substantial in Upper Buck Spring and in "Maple City"; moderate at best in Maverick Canyon; sporadic elsewhere.

Deb and I first started doing this hike 12 years ago for her Birthday. The peak of color just seems to work out most years. This year was no exception. Some color was done and on the ground, some was still green, but most was peaking for our peeping.

Throw in perfect weather, a smattering of clouds, and not a sole seen, and it does not get much better.

This was a easy hike compared to Bear Canyon to Mule Crossing the day before. I had done this hike a couple of times before several years ago. The "option 1 trailhead" was easy to find but locating the trail beyond all the blowdowns would have been tough without a GPS track. Once on it we just followed the depression in the ground to the canyon where the forest opened up. From this point on it was a pleasant walk through a meadow. Things were pretty much as I remembered them. Good enjoyable hike.

A pleasant little leg stretcher in a new section of some of my favorite “Mellow Mogollon Canyons”.
Little warm weather in the morning made for a much enjoyed lunchtime swim complete with sandy shores and beverages.
Complete solitude besides dog company from Mr. Mellow himself who seemed to thoroughly enjoy himself as well.
A blessed day in the high country heartland.

We first started doing this hike 11 years ago. It has never disappointed for color and worked out great for Debby's birthday color hike.

A chilly, windy, cloudy 55 to start, so the colors were a bit muted on the way down, but were everywhere.
We headed up the meadow to Buck Springs cabin where we met our only people on the day, a family that had just driven up.

On the return trip we headed the sun popped out a bit more, so we altered our route a bit and headed back up the way we came.

Much more vibrant colors this time on the way up. We took our time to take it all in.

Colors should be good here for the next week. The are below freezing temps forecasted in the next 7 days up there.

The rim road is in great shape and it was easy to keep speeds around 30-40mph

Wife and I took the pooch and the nephew along to catch some of the final show of color from the maples and oaks on the rim. Inspired by some of the recent triplogs, this hike appeared to be a good one. After some discussion, the wife felt comfortable doing this forest walk, and my nephew wanted to come along so the plan was made and off we went.

We arrived to our starting spot just after 9am and to start the the temps were very pleasant at 62º. We didn't see a single person while we were in the canyon or walking up the drainages and that was a pleasant surprise. I expected to see at least a dozen people, if not more, while I was out there.

This was a milestone hike our little dog and my nephew. Prior to this hike the longest our dog had hike was just a few miles and for my nephew just over four miles. While this is not a challenging hike I still commend him for pushing through the pain and suck of breaking in his new shoes and having a a great attitude about it the whole time. We finished the hike in a bit warmer temps (73º) but that beats this 100º crap in Phoenix. Good time had by all. :y:

Rim Road was a joke as always but with the aggregate it's made for a bit more a pleasant ride. Overall a very nice Saturday afternoon and glad we were able to find a spot to ourselves. This was my closeout hike for the rim this year. Looking forward to more fall colors in about a month in the southeastern end of the state in another month. :D

We would've loved to backpack the Beaver Turkey area like we did in previous years, but our 13-year old girl has slowed down significantly and struggles to get up at times after laying down for a long while :( So we car camped at Grasshopper's campsite on 139 Friday night and strolled a few miles in this area Saturday morning to check out some colors.

Deb and I get out every year for her birthday to enjoy the fall colors. We've done this track before and it never disappoints. There was a nice mix of reds and yellows. Breezy conditions had carpeted much of the forest floor, but there were still plenty still attached to put on quite the show.

The birds were chirpin', the squirrels were busy readying themselves for winter and the elk rut is in full swing.

On ssj's request of something relatively easy, I penciled in a 6 mile loop through meandering meadows. Started off 321 and wandered north though a drainage until reaching Barbershop, taking that across to the cabins and heading back up Buck Springs, cutting across near the old Holder site and through Yeager again back to the truck.

Ran into a Coco researcher taking samples of growth for a study on Elk grazing in the meadows. He said it had been over 15 years since cattle have grazed here so it's just the "natural" stuff now. I asked if he knew anything about the VV triangles and he did not. Though he speculated that it could have been part of a hydrology survey given that many are located in canyon bottoms.

West side FR300 is undergoing a resurfacing project that is slated to take months. (Nope, I haven't seen anything posted about this either). For now, it's nicer than it was, but a real mess. Closures ahead as they will be bringing in gravel trucks and they have nowhere to turn around!
