Decided to shake things up by hiking to Garwood Dam from Broadway instead of Speedway. It’s longer and arguably less interesting (more flat) but it did afford some nice views of the Rincons and of the dam from below.

Timing on the return was perfect for sunset. Really enjoyed the light from Pink Hill.

Lots of quail out.

Another short hike in Saguaro National Park around sunset. We started this hike at the Speedway Trail Head at the Wildhorse Trail Head. We will hike the Shantz Trail and return on the Vanover and Creosote Trail. Once again we finish just after sunset.

Besides the usual desert scenery there is not a lot of interesting points along this hike. The wash crossings are the most interesting. Bajada Vista, Monument, Loma Verde and the Javelina washes are the 4 main wash crossings. This time of year all the growth is dead in contrast to last summer when it was thick and green. Walking along the Shantz can get quite old as there is a lot of sand and makes the going tougher but its only 2.5 miles and I can deal with just about anything for 2.5 miles. Just an FYI if you are going to hike any of the washes in the park the best time to do it is early morning in the summer after the rains have packed the sand in the washes (actually anyone that has hiked the desert knows that already). Only saw three people on the trail and they were runners, actually saw them twice as they were doing the same loop in the opposite direction (does this count as 6 people or is it still 3?).

Hiked a loop that took the Javelina West Wash Trail north from the Rincon visitors center to Shantz Trail to the Broadway Trailhead, then Cactus Forest Trail back to Javelina East Wash Trail to complete the loop. On the Cactus Forest Trail we visited the ranger cabin ruins, the lime ovens and Lime Falls, which was dry except for a few small pools.

We needed to get out and do some hiking for November but our schedule is kind of busy. We opted to do a short hike in Saguaro National Park which only required a short 5 minute drive to get there. From the Cactus Forest trail Head on Old Spanish Trail we hiked the Cactus Forest then the Mica View to the Trail Head on Broadway then returned on the Shantz and Javelina Wash trails. We did a side trip to Limestone falls near the limestone kilns. I had done these trails before a few years back but was nice to do them again. There isn't a lot of elevation change on these trails just up and down small hills. the 2.3 miles along Javelina Wash was a bit tiring because it is in sand, luckily there were areas of hard pack sand from the rains this last summer. This trail in Javelina Wash is not traveled much as evident from the few tracks in the sand. The only water we saw was short section near Limestone Falls and it was just barely a trickle and some small pooling on rocks. The weather was nice probably in the 70'swith a thin layer of cirrus clouds. You have to hand it to these clouds they stretch all the way to the equator to shade us on this hike.

Wanted to do a loop of the western trails in saguaro National Park that I haven't done in a long time. Started with the Shantz trail to Cactus Forest Loop drive and went along the road to the Loma Verde Trail Head. From the Loma Verde I took the Squeeze Pen and Kennedy Trail back to the Shantz Trail. Still had time and water left so I added the bajada Wash and returned via the Garwood and Stock Bypass Trails.

There was a lot of rain two days prior so that made the walking easier along the sandy portions of the Shantz, Bajada Wash and the stock bypass trails. Was a little muddy on portions of the Lower Shantz trail near Monument wash but it wasn't bad. There was also water pooling along the upper portions of the Bajada Wash Trail. The trails are all in good condition but portions of the Squeeze Pen trail near the end toward the Kennedy Trail had a lot of erosion. There was only one person (jogger)on the Shantz Trail near the Broadway trail head and one person on the Garwood Trail. Great day for hiking the temperatures were in the 70's but the humidity was very high. Started the hike at 175 lbs and finished just over 170. Spent the rest of the day re hydrating. I want to do the Monument and Loma Verde Wash trails again at some point but will wait for another storm to make the walking easier.

Another evening to night hike on Shantz Trail from Broadway. Headed south from there to the picnic area, then to the SNP road. Turned north as the sun started to set and headed back, all this in an effort to get in shape and to prep for an upcoming July PCT hike. Light flowers, perfect temps. Saw quail and jack rabbits. Heard elf owls and far, far off coyotes. Startled sleeping birds in a bush who in turn startled me. The moon was late to rise so I was off trail by the time it finally arrived. Lost 10 pounds in the last 60 days so these pathetic little hikes will continue to show up here as a testament to my efforts. So there!! :D :D

An evening/night hike under an almost full moon. I did 3.56 miles as an easy walk through the desert, heading south to the picnic area from Broadway, and then back north again. Took me 1 hr 40 minutes. The owls were talking for quite a long time and I also heard a flicker along with them...in darkness. Made me curious about what was upsetting the two of them. Later, the coyotes started up and it was delightful. The moon over Mica Mountain illuminating the saguaros......priceless. Creosote is in bloom, and some smaller flowers. No reptiles tonight.

Started at the Broadway trailhead and made a loop first going south via Shantz and then the Javelina Wash to pick up the Cactus Forest trail to the Lime Kilns and Lime Kiln Falls.

Tracking back north and staying on the Cactus Forest to make a loop to the east via Mesquite and Squeeze Pen to the Pink Hill trail. Nice views from the top of Pink Hill.

Had what looked to be a falcon land in a tree just to the edge of the Cactus Forest trail as we passed.

10 mile loop around Saguaro NP and up to Bridal Wreath Falls after the winter storm. Fair amount of water coming over the falls. Fresh snow on the mountain tops. Cool day and a little breezy.

Went out with a group for a 10 mile loop around SNP East the day after the winter storm went through. A few muddy spots but overall great day for a hike. Lots of pools in the canyon near Garwood dam and in Wild Horse canyon. Passed a few horses on the Shantz trail portion and one mule on the Pink Hill section.

Started out at the Broadway trail head. Loop trail along the trails of the Northwest portion of the park. Started out along the Shantz Trail to Loma Verde Trail. Hiked on the Loma Verde trail both the new and old trail, The new Loma Verde Trail southern portion use to be called the Saguaro Trail. Continued on along the old abandon northern portion of the Saguaro Trail to Deer Valley Wash trail to the Carrillo Trail. Took Pink Hill Trail back to Shantz Trail. Depending on what version of the Saguaro National Park trail Map both the old and new trails are shown. This hike reminded me of driving on the Las Angeles Freeways back in the 70's, Traveling along a route seeing a different freeway and taking it to see where it goes, then on to another and eventually ending up back where you started. Nice trail for the winter when you have no destination in mind just want to get out and enjoy the desert.

A nice trip to Garwood Dam via Pink Hill - we had not been there before, odd/interesting site - I really enjoyed reading the information in this document - http://www.gvrhc.org/Library/GarwoodRanchUpdate.pdf - about the Garwood Ranch in the Green Valley Hiking Club Library.
