Another short hike in Saguaro National Park. Needed to get out and get some walking in so we picked a spot close to home. We started at the Loma Verde Trail Head within the park and took the Mesquite Trail to Javelina Wash, then the Vanover and returned on the Loma Verde Wash and Cholla Trails. Lots of sand walking on this hike, over half. This is not a terribly interesting hike but doing it around sunset made it rather pleasant.

1st trip
This was a loop hike connecting the Loma Verde Wash and Javelina Wash including the East and West branches of the Javelina Wash. Started early in the morning to try and beat the heat, can’t do anything about the humidity. The rains of a couple of days ago made the walking along the washes quite a bit easier because the sand was packed. The lower parts of the Loma Verde and Javelina were a little more difficult because of recent horse activity loosening up the sand. Most of this hike was along washes and in these areas there is no trail as such, it is more of a route. In many places the washes are more of a flood plain that had multiple options for travel, meaning sometimes you had to make a decision as which way to go. A wrong choice didn’t mean you were off trail, just meant the path you selected might peter out or become overgrown by Mesquite trees or shrubs. This is particularly true along the Javelina Wash West. Once on an actual trail it felt like traveling on a freeway. Along the Cactus Forest Trail I stopped and took a very small detour to check out the Lime Kilns. Once again I did not see any rattle snakes, this makes the third hike in the park in the last 3 weeks I haven’t seen any, I thought this was strange because usually early morning they are everywhere. I did see the usual deer and a truck loads of rabbits. This was a fun loop because winding through the washes there always seemed to be something interesting around each bend, particularly the Javelina Wash West. Recommend next time you see a large monsoon storm over the saguaro Park especially along Tanque Verde ridge, plan a trip along these washes the next day.

Started out as an evening hike from the Monument Wash access point down Loma Verde Wash to Cholla Trail. Started running out of light when I reached Cholla Trail, so I jogged back to the trailhead.

Did a loop from Braodway TH to Loma Verde TH and back. Midway through the hike I got to hear a pack of coyotes start howling. Sounded like there must have been almost a dozen of them and they couldn't have been more than a 100 yards away.

Decided my run from Speedway TH was too short so I headed over to the Broadway TH to do another run. The clouds began to clear and I encountered several people out taking advantage of the nice weather.

Went for a run from Broadway trailhead. Didn't really know how long of a run my legs were up for, so I just took off with no real destination in mind. It was nice and cloudy out for most of the time I was on the trail, I even had a couple small showers. Ended up running from the Broadway Trailhead, south to Loma Verde Trailhead, back north to Douglas Spring Trailhead, then swung south to Pink Hill and worked my way back to where I started. I think I covered nearly every trail between Speedway & Cactus Forest Drive!

I'm really getting into exploring the network of trails in Saguaro National Park East! The trails are well maintained and work great for running: allowing me to cover a good amount of ground in a very short period of time. I took a quick evening run from the Broadway Trailhead over towards the Loma Verde Mine & looped back. Encountered 5 other trail runners and only two hikers.

I hurt my calves running recently and figured a nice flat stroll through Saguaro National Park would help loosen them. Started around 5pm and wandered along several or the trails with no real destination in mind. It was a nice day to be on trail- temperature was just right and I didn't encounter anyone else on the trails! Just about time to start doing night hikes...

Night time hike to avoid the daytime heat. Started at the east end of Broadway and wandered through Saguaro National Park. Saw more wildlife than I have seen on a hike in a long time: Rattlesnakes, gopher snakes, more tarantulas than I could count, and a scorpion that looked like it could take down a cow!

Easy little loop. Didn't see a soul and even though a portion of the trail approaches the road, you don't really notice it at all. Nice sense of isolation for being so close to home.
