I was planning to do this hike last month but when I started the lightning storms from the night before hadn't quit yet, so I modified it. This time I got the loop in and also did Lousley Hill, which has really nice 360 views. Dark when I started, sunny but still cool when I finished. Felt noticeably cooler on Lousley Hill. Not much traffic on the trails since it was a Tuesday, busier when I finished up.

Second hike of the “Daily Double.” My goal is to revisit parks that I’ve completed to stay in touch with the area. It is a bit of a drive to get out to Fountain Hills so this was an ideal add on to make the drive worthwhile. Lousley is probably one of the more rugged trails in MMRP. It is a short trail with a decent incline, but it is very rocky. This is one of the few stand alone trails in the park, though the Escondido briefly crosses it at the beginning. No wildlife and had the trail to myself. However, this is near a campground and there were quite a few people camping nearby. Good TD.

On my last visit to Cave Creek Regional Park, I purchased one of them nifty annual passes for the Maricopa County Parks System. Time to get my money's worth, by gum! I figured I would visit them in clockwise fashion starting from CCRP and immediately goofed the plan all up by visiting McDowell Mountain RP next, forgetting that Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area is also part of the system ](*,)

As an iOS Route Scooter, this was also an opportunity to help the dev team by putting RS through some tests. I only had one issue where, after deviating from the downloaded route, RS couldn't find me again when I returned to it at a point further along. Closing and reopening the app did the trick.

Initially, I had intended to do a return loop on Scenic Trail but wasn't ready to start back so soon.

At the start, Pemberton had a bit more MTBs than I'm comfortable with, which is really any number at all. A childhood incident where I was hit by a cyclist from behind while walking still haunts me almost fifty years later and I find myself constantly looking over my shoulder. Maybe I should get one of those tiny little postage stamp sized rearview mirrors they use?

Escondido trail was much quieter. Only one cyclist and no other human sightings.

I had Lousley Hill all to myself. This seems like it would be a sweet spot to return to the next time there's snow on the mountains.

On the return, a nice bunch of wispy clouds provided some welcome diffusion of the sun's rays. Didn't see another soul until I got back on Pemberton.

I'll definitely return but would likely choose other options to minimize my time on Pemberton, being the main arterial route that it is.

Another night hike in the McDowell Mountain Regional Park. Decided to hit the north of the park. Wanted to do the Verde and North Trails. Also noticed that HAZ didn't have a GPS trail for Lousley Hill Loop, so I figured I would pop over and get that. Nursery Tank Trail is right in the area so I figured I would see if there was anything to see there (Doubtful, given the time of year)

Verde Trailhead Parking - To get to the park you have to go into a gated community when you turn onto North Tonto Verde Drive road (off of North Fort McDowell Road). Gate was closed when I got there(sometime after 9:30pm). I drove around to see if there was another access point to the road, and there doesn't seem to be one. Luckily, when I drove past the entrance the second time, someone was entering, so I tailgated them and got past the gate. Not sure if the gate is closed during the day, but something to think about. I'm thinking this community thinks this trailhead if just for them. If you can get in, the gate will open automatically going out, so you don't have to worry about getting trapped.

Anyhow got to the trailhead at 10:11pm, temp was a toasty 96 degrees, dropped the fee in the self-pay box and started on the hike.

The planned hike is as detailed below, making for a 8.6 mile hike with 1 mile on the road, and 0.4 miles in a wash to get to all of the trails.

Although it was a "Warm" night, the hike went pretty much without issue, Didn't see anything at Nursery Tank. Got back to the trailhead at 1:18am and headed out.

01. Verde Trail (Heading South) 1.2
02. Northern Loop (West Site) 1.9
03. Wash Exit (Heading South) 0.2

Hiking with the Javelina Jundred....long drive for a short hike. I was thinking of doing a different hike but ended up here. Turned out to be a good thing as I didn't have my hiking shoes with me and ended up hiking in my work shoes. I was surprised to find that Aravaipa was out there this weekend doing their Javelina Jundred run. The Lousley is a self contained trail, but a portion of it briefly crossed the route (Escondido Trail) for the runners. Disappointed to see only 2 runners while on the trail and maybe about 15 others while driving through the park.

The Lousley trail is one of the more isolated trails within the MMRP. The TH has enough parking for 7 vehicles. There is also more raking in the vicinity, mainly for camping, but enough room for overflow if that was ever required. The trail crosses the Escondido Trail and then a wash before splitting to start the loop. There are two old, faded plastic markers indicating where the trail splits. I opted to go CCW. This seemed to be the more direct route to climb the hill. It does numerous lazy switchbacks on its way to the top. There is a giant cairn at the top...I added a stone to the pile. Decent views for MMRP. Probably the best, most eastern viewing point in the park. The descent down the east side is more gradual. There is actually a railing at one of the bends where there is a steep drop off. The trail is a nice single track that is easy to follow. Loose, fist-sized rocks may it annoying, but not overly challenging to hike. Vegetation is minimal....mostly "browned" by the long hot summer. Beautiful sunrise for a hike. Clouds were given a pinkish hue by the morning light. Clouds, temps, breeze made for a very pleasant morning hike.

An early morning loop hike in McDowell Mountain Regional Park...

Starting from Four Peaks TH / Horse Staging Area, I hiked Shallmo Wash Trail, Pemberton, and then Escondido. Midway along Escondido, I hiked the Lousley Hill loop, after which I finished on Escondido.

The morning was muggy (for AZ anyway) with temps in the low- to mid-eighties. I saw perhaps half a dozen mountain bikers, but no other trail users.

Despite the relatively cool conditions, I drank at least 4L of water.

I was in the area so I hit this trail too. It's a short loop climb up a little hill and back. Maybe I should have hit this one first. It has better views. :)

Did a quick loop this morning with my kid before packing up and heading back to Gilbert. Nice views of the McDowell's this morning. Wish I had a decent camera.

Camping at McDowell with my kid. Did a quick trail run up Lousley Hill to make up for the massive steak I was going to consume for dinner.

I went up to McDowell Mt. Park again to hit some of the newer trails that have been built. I started from the Four Peaks horse staging area instead of the usual trailhead at the end of Shallmo Drive to reduce the driving time. From there, I took the Escondido Trail north, did an out and back on the Cinch Trail that connects to the Scenic Trail, hiked the Lousley Hill trail lasso loop, back on Escondido, over to Pemberton and finished with the Shallmo Wash Trail back to the start, making one big loop. The first 2 hours it was mostly cloudy, but then then it cleared up and the sun came out, just before I got to the Lousley Hill trail and the nice views that gives.

The Escondido Trail is pretty nice. lots of zig zags as it heads north, paralleling McDowell Mt. Road. It's cut into the foothills and stays above the flats below for the most part, until it gets up to the north end. I had never done the Lousley Hill Trail before, and I really liked the views up there a lot. the Shallmo Wash trail was a bit of a slog, like most washes are. Glad I saved that one for last as some pebbles got into my boots during that last mile.

Finished up just after 11am almost doing 12 miles for the morning.

With a chance of on-again off-again rain, McDowell Mountain Regional Park seemed like a good idea. I could do a few short hikes and be back at my car quickly if the skies opened up. Lousley Hill was the first stop, more of a leg-stretcher than anything. Nobody else was out there, just me and the lizards enjoying a cool breeze.

Great little hike up a short foothill in the McDowell Mtn. Park. Was overcast and cool, but I can see this being a very warm hike in the summer (little to no shade on the trail). Beginning of the hike is in a wash area and then quickly begins to gently ascend Lousley Hill. Great 360 degree views along the way. Nice views of Four Peaks to the east and the McDowells to the west. I took two of my kids (9 and 7) and our dog. It was a hit with all four of us! Definitely recommend as a nice easy hike.
