Nice morning to head back out. We were able to head up Pikes Peak and then over to Mill before heading back down. There was one cholla field to navigate but the off trail portion wasn’t too bad.

We returned to Hells Canyon Wilderness a few months after our first visit to check out some new peaks. We started counter-clockwise on the Walkin' Jim Loop and left the trail early to hike up to Peak 2191, which was more hill than peak. It served as a nice warmup--pretty easy off-trail hiking and less than 400 feet of elevation gain to the top. A few javelinas ran off as we made our way up, and even though it's a fairly low peak, it offered nice views of Lake Pleasant just after sunrise. On the way back down toward the trail, we saw our first wild burro of the day.

Based on the guides for Pike's Peak and 3465, it sounded like the latter would be the slower of the two, with more bushwhacking and scrambling required to reach the top. With that in mind, we decided to hike 3465 next and get complete the bigger challenge first, so we headed west and continued onto Big Jim Trail. It's a beautifully rugged area as the trail starts to climb toward the saddle at the end of Big Jim, and we saw three wild burros up on the hillside. @TBoneKathy waited part way up Big Jim while I continued toward the peak. The burros ended up leading the way for a while, staying on the trail and jogging ahead of me as I approached before they finally ran down a steep hillside...their surefootedness on steep, loose terrain in impressive. [ youtube video ]

The route to 3465 was well-cairned, relatively brush-free, and easy to follow. I saw another group of javelinas on the way up, and the few areas that required some scrambling were straightforward. The lid on the summit register jar had rusted through, and the papers inside had suffered water damage. I had an empty plastic container with me, so I put all the old papers inside and added a few new sheets.

[ youtube video ]

On the way back down, I found a random piece of pottery near Big Jim Trail at the saddle, which I didn't expect out there. I rejoined TboneKathy, and we headed for Pike's Peak next. That proved to be a much slower bushwhack than 3465, with a lot more brush and loose rock to contend with and no informal trail to follow. With time constraints, TboneKathy waited partway up the slope to the saddle while I continued on. It wasn't particularly steep or difficult and didn't have any exposure; it was just slow going beteween rocky terrain and plenty of sharp desert foliage to dodge. One I reached the saddle, it was a much faster final climb up to the summit, where there were two memorials, one for someone named Bill Marsh and one for Bob Marsh. I didn't find a summit register up there...perhaps I should have saved the plastic bottle I'd left to replace the one on 3465...

[ youtube video ]

Still short on time, I rushed over toward Mill 3189, passing a few more wild burros along the way. On the scramble up to the peak, I ended up with a teddy bear cholla stuck in my right calf, in the exact same spot I'd already removed one earlier in the day...ouch. I found the benchmark on the top but didn't see a summit register or go off the ridgeline to look for Frustum #18 before I started back down.

[ youtube video ]

It was nice to be back on flat trail again after a lot of bushwhacking, and we had a few more wild burro encounters on the hike out--some we saw, some we only heard braying nearby...a much more welcome sound than the shooting range off in the distance. Overall, it was a really nice day, with visits to four new peaks, perfect weather, and relative solitude--we only saw four other people all the trails all day--two bow hunters and two hikers.

I've had problems with Route Scout crashing on hikes, so my stats are little off, but @John10s has a better route for this hike. If we compared our routes, mine would show the main loop, but most of the out-and-back arms would be truncated. Those would be the peaks that I enjoyed from part way up. John10s is a lot faster than I am, but while waiting for him to go up, I end up seeing a lot of things I wouldn't have seen otherwise.

I did reach the top of Peak 2191 early in the hike. When the steep and loose began to dominate enroute to Peak 3465, I found a seat where I could observe the wild burros as John10s went for the peak. With limited time, I wanted to be sure we'd have time to reach Pikes Peak. Burro viewing was cut short as they were right on John10s’s trail to the peak. They were very obliging, moving on for him and posing for pictures.

I enjoyed the call of a canyon wren. Then a hawk of some type soared near and perched on the cliffs across the way, and then was joined by another.

Pikes Peak ended up requiring more bushwhacking than expected. Checking the time, it was clear we wouldn't both have time to make it. I found a seat again and soon heard footsteps. Trying to locate the source, a large black spot caught my eye across the canyon. It looked a lot like a black bear rump. Until it turned. A dark burro! It turned out there were several of various colors and on this still day, I could hear their footsteps across the wide canyon.

A turkey vulture soared and circled. Then a smaller, jay-sized bird showed up and harassed it. An even smaller bird joined in, and right in front of me, the smaller bird closed in on the vulture and I could clearly see the vulture snap and barely miss it! Another noise distracted me and I turned to see a black-throated sparrow (?) in the bush just 5 feet away.

I heard a cactus wren, and realizing that I had an internet connection, played some cactus wren calls to encourage it to continue and perhaps even move in closer, but I don't think I really made any difference.

We had a long walk out, with the southern part of the loop being rougher than the north. As we neared the end, we were treated to a long, loud and varied wild burro braying party.

So John10s and I had more divergent experiences on this hike than on most, but both experiences were fulfilling.

I went out to the Lake Pleasant area and hiked up to both Pike's Peak and the Mill Benchmark.

We did the Walkin' Jim Loop CCW, and when we got to the junction with the Big Jim Trail we took the Big Jim Trail for a short distance before going off-trail to Pike's Peak and then the Mill Benchmark. When we were at the Mill Benchmark we started to go up to Peak 3392, but it would have taken longer than we wanted, so we decided to head back. We went back to the Big Jim Trail the same way that we came up. Once back on the Walkin' Jim Trail, we continued the loop back to the TH.

The off-trail portion seemed a bit easier than the other time that I did it. The 2nd half of the Walkin' Jim Trail was hard to follow in places, and I got way off course once, so don't follow my GPS track on this portion. The orientation on my GPS was screwed up, rendering the GPS almost worthless in following a track.

It was a nice day to be out there, although it got a bit warm on the hike back. We saw 7 burros in the early part of the hike, and heard several others braying. There were no sightings of other humans on the hike.

I like to visit these peaks once a year before the weather gets too warm, and today seemed like a good day to get them checked off the list. We got started a little after 0800 and headed west on Walkin' Jim trail. Easy hiking, with the trail generally easy to follow. Turned right onto Big Jim Trail and took it up to 3465. The trail from the saddle up to the summit has become more defined, and it's now pretty easy to avoid scrambling through the rocks just below the summit--there's now a clear path that stays just below those rocks. Short break at the summit before heading back down.

We turned off Big Jim and headed down to the wash to make our way over to Pikes and Mill. This has become more overgrown since last winter and the ridge heading west up from the wash was very brushy compared to prior trips. Slow progress through here, but I generally stayed pretty close to the right of the ridge and once up top, it was just a matter of avoiding the endless cholla on the way over to the peaks. Visited Pikes first, then Mill, before heading back down the ridge and through the wash. Once back on Big Jim, we headed over to Walkin' Jim to complete the loop.

As usual, the southern half of Walkin' Jim is much more vague and difficult to follow. Got off track in a couple of places, but we were able to find the trail again quickly each time. Took the shortcut near the end to shave off a chunk of distance around a hill. Finished up close to 1730. Nice day for this one, although it was a little warm due to the lack of breeze almost the entire time.

I was looking for a hike that had some distance and elevation gain, and also offered some peaks to bag. I decided to head to the Hieroglyphic Mountains near Lake Pleasant and do this hike. I had hiked up to Peak 3465 twice before, but had never done Pikes Peak(3,177') or Mill(3,189') before. Pikes and Mill were off-trail, and I stolecopied tracks that @LindaAnn and @trekkin_gecko uploaded from their hike to these 2 peaks back in January of this year.

From the trailhead, I started out on the Walkin Jim trail, and did the loop CCW. Once I got to the Big Jim Trail junction, I took the Big Jim Trail up to Peak 3465. It was a fun scramble up to the summit of Peak 3465. On the way back down, a short distance before getting back to the Walkin Jim trail, I took off on an off-trail jaunt up to Pikes and Mill. I pretty closely followed the route that @LindaAnn and @trekkin_gecko used. It was a little steep and slippery for part of the hike up and down, but it wasn't too bad of a bushwhack. Once on top it was easy following a ridgeline up to Pikes Peak first, and then to Mill. I took the same route back down to the Big Jim Trail, and then went back to the Walkin Jim trail. Once back to the Walkin Jim trail, I continued on the loop back to the TH. Route finding on the southern portion of the Walkin Jim trail was a bit of a challenge at times: the trail was often more faint than it was on the northern section of the trail and there weren't as many cairns. I got off track a few times, and I was glad that I had a GPS track to follow.

On the way back on the southern part of the Walkin Jim trail I saw 7 burros, and heard a lot more. I have seen wild burros each of the 3 times that I have hiked the southern section of the Walkin Jim Trail, but have never seen any on the northern section.

In the morning, on the northern section of the Walkin Jim Trail I came across a bovine bull standing in the middle of the trail. I stopped and watched him for a few minutes, hoping that he would move. He eventually moved about 10 feet off the trail and stopped. I decided to just circle around him and continue on my way -- fortunately the bull did not seem ornery. I think that I would rather deal with a bear or a mountain lion than a really mean domestic bull.

Once on top of the ridge connecting Pikes and Mill, it was an easy walkup to get up to Pikes Peak. There was a bit of scrambling to get on top of Mill, and I had to make my way through a cholla mine field on my way up to the Mill summit. There were a couple of memorials to deceased hikers on Pikes Peak, which was interesting to see.

We got started around 7:15am, just light enough to not need a headlamp. Headed out on Walkin' Jim trail. Lots of burro evidence, but none seen. With the grass growing in, the trail gets faint in places, but was overall pretty easy to follow. We made good time to Big Jim Trail then headed up to 3465. Trail was a little harder to spot in a few places, but we made it up without incident. Great views all around, with lots of snow cover on the northern horizon. It was still pretty early, so we only took a short break before heading back down. We ran across a group of 4 hikers near the bottom, but I don't think they were planning on heading up to the summit. Before the end of Big Jim, we cut southwest on a pretty good use path over to the next wash, then headed west to the ridge that leads up to Pikes. On the ridge, it's best to stay just barely to the right, basically hugging the rocks the entire way; we ended up a little too far to the right and were treated to more brush and a steeper hike up than necessary. Once we topped out, it's a fairly easy hike south to Pikes. We stopped there for a minute, then headed back down and continued north to Mill. Again, I like the easy scramble up to Mill, and the view gives a unique perspective of the sheer side of 3465. Once back down from Mill, we took a short lunch break, then headed back down the ridge. On the way back down, we did a much better job of sticking close to the ridgeline, and it was an easier descent. We got back to Big Jim, then continued the Walkin' Jim loop. The southern half of Walkin' Jim was much more difficult to follow, and we had to stop and look around for the next hint of trail or a cairn many times. We saw one burro on the return. Shortly before the end of the trail, it turns sharply north to circle around the north side of the hill directly west of the parking lot; there is a shortcut that cuts across the south end of the hill and eliminates some unnecessary mileage. We took that shortcut since we have both done the official trail before. Perfect weather all day today, and a nice day to do some off trail desert hiking.

1st trip
got an invite from linda to hike 3465 and a couple of other peaks nearby
really liked 3465 when i hiked it with johnlp a few years ago
just don't get over this way very often
we got going before sunrise
nice enough temps, a little damp due to overnight rains
some nice clouds over lake pleasant and the bradshaw mountains
walkin' jim to big jim and up to 3465
great views from there
dropped back down then took a faint use trail to a wash, then a ridgeline to the saddle between pikes and mill
headed first to pikes and checked out summit views and the memorial
back to the saddle then northeast to mill
nice little scramble to get up the last little bit
too bad we didn't know there was a benchmark up there
easy off trail up high
took a lunch break after mill
linda found her original route back down
much better footing and an easier grade
she also let me use one of her hiking poles which made a big difference on the descent - thank you!
finished out the loop with one little shortcut
nice day, good company and two new peaks!
needed to reclaim some off trail credibility
using linda's stats, although mine are close

Started around 7:00am to a great sunrise. Passed a group of burros a few miles in, got some pics of them, then headed over to 3465. Had an early lunch at the top, then headed back down then over towards Pikes. I had pulled together a rough route, which we followed for a short distance, then climbed up a small hill for a better view, and adjusted the route a little more to the north and up the most gradual ridge we could see. It was the right call, with a fairly easy ascent. From the top we curved to the west and south over to Pikes. Got some pics, then followed the ridge north to Mill. It was a fun easy scramble up to Mill, which I enjoyed. Heading back down, I wanted to take the same ridge back down, others wanted to contour down the drainage on the north side of the ridge. We survived, but I think about halfway down, I may have said something like "I told you so." Once back on the trail, we continued along the Walkin Jim loop, making one shortcut not too far from the end, finishing up a little after 5:00. Great day, great weather, no other people seen all day.

I'd never set foot on these trails before this trip, but a couple of desert peaks sounded good. Chilly start at sunrise for my underdressed self. I was the only one wearing shorts today, unfortunately. We made our way along Walkin' Jim, crossed paths with a few burros and started up 3465. Nice trail and easy to follow route to the summit. The views were better than I anticipated. Rugged peaks and colorful geology in all directions. The lake actually looks pleasant from up here. We soaked it all in during brunch. Once back in the flatlands, the off-trail fun began. We climbed a hill and eyeballed a route onto the ridge. We picked a winner. It was much easier than it looked from that hill. We strolled along the ridgeline over to Pike's, then back West along the ridge over to Mill. Both were worthy destinations. Mill was fun and required navigating through a steep, loose cholla field, then a narrow, rocky 'mini ridge' just before the top. Heading back down, I spotted the 'adventurous route' for the day and opted for new scenery, instead of returning the way we arrived, and convinced Linda to follow. The descent we ended up with was steep and loose, but complaining was kept to a minimum. We arrived at the drainage safely and followed it back to the trail to finish out the loop. Weather stayed perfect all day and we didn't encounter a single hiker throughout. I found this place to be surprisingly scnenic. Add some off-trail fun and it makes for a great day.

BLAST FROM THE PAST! Did the hike about a month ago with Chris. This is one of my favorite hikes so when he mentioned that he wanted to hike it, I was all on board. Did the hike CCW. The northern portion of the trail was more overgrown than I anticipated which made me concerned about some of the less used portions. But surprisingly as we hiked into the interior the western sections were in about the same shape as what we had transversed. The climb to the top was uneventful. The most annoying aspect of that (and the entire hike for that matter) were the foxtails/cattails that kept embedding themselves in my sox and shoes. The views from the top were awesome...as always. We didn't bother signing the register, because it was in such bad shape. On the return trip we took the southern leg of the Walking Jim Trail to complete the loop. Saw several burros(as usual),but the highlight of the hike the gila monster we saw chilling in the shade of a tree. Very cool! Thx for the invite Chris. Great Hike!

This is actually the fourth time I've done this hike, but there are actually several descriptors that encapsulate this hike. This is the first time I've logged this hike under the Pike's Peak description. (The other two descriptors that deal with the same primary routes are "Big Jim Trail" and "Peak 3564 Hieroglyphic Mtn". All three give worthwhile, but similar data for this hike).

Really looking forward to this hike because a) I love the scenery and b) I was hoping for some wildlife. Lately, the best I've seen is a handful of chipmunks. This hike did not disappoint. Got on the trail around 6:30. I was able to watch the sun illuminate Pike Peak with an orange hue as the sun crept above the horizon. Gorgeous! And shortly thereafter I saw a mommy burro with a youngster (a month old maybe?). Tried to get a picture but I wasn't fast enough. And then, within 20 minutes of that, I came across 3 javelina. Sweet! I was able to get a picture of the backside of one of them as they fled through the brush. All this, and I wasn't even two miles into my hike. The wildlife did taper off a bit after that, but the hike did not. Went in my usual way, going CCW on the Walkin Jim and then took the Big Jim Trail up to the top of Pike's Peak. Going in, the Walkin Jim Trail seemed to be more cairned than previously. A little bit of overkill in my mind, but beneficial in some of the interior sections which had minimal use. This was especially true on the Big Jim. I found that the flatter section were harder to make out and the cairns were helpful. The climbing section was more evident since it was "cut" into the side of the hill. In my mind there are two saddles on the way to Pike's Peak. The cairns are there to get you to the top, but they are sporadic and overgrown in quite a few places so the trail isn't as evident. You are very near to the top so there is little chance of losing your way. To simply your climb stay to the right (west) as you climb to the second saddle. From the second saddle it is more of a direct approach as you climb to what turns out to be false summit. At this false summit (kind of a mini-saddle), you'll see Pike's Peak looming directly in front of you. For the least technical approach, fade to the left, using the boulder slope to help in your climb. About 100 yards past the boulder slide there will be a cleft in the rocks and an easy access point to the top. (At the top make sure you note the stick in the rock. This will help guide you when you descend).

I signed the register, when I got to the top. Register was in bad shape. Very few people had signed in since my last visit with Spiderlegs and Jason from almost two years ago. If anyone goes up in the near future the register needs a bigger container. The glass jar being used right now is too small.

On the way down, I did a little off trail wandering hitting the high points that create saddle 1 and saddle 2. Neither was very technical, though the one involving saddle 2 was more climb oriented and involved going through some brush. On the way back, I finished the loop of the Walkin Jim Trail. Someone had recently done a nice job of "ribboning" this part of the trail. I didn't see any ribbons on my way in to the Big Jim Trail (north section) but they were abundant on the southern portion.

Great hike! I didn't see anyone the whole day, but gunshots were a constant companion. Wildlife included chipmunks, lizards, quail, a rabbit, 3 cows, 3 javelina and 10 burros.

I had ‘low’ hopes of success for this hike.
There was a big chance that what I was trying to locate would not be there. As it turned out, all things were in place. Lucky me.

The hike was in the Hieroglyphic Mountains, specifically on Pikes Peak.
Pikes Pk is just east of the Morgan City Wash and the remains of Morgan City Mine. From what I can gather, there never was a city named Morgan City. Possibly wishful thinking. (Let me know where the city was located, if you have info).

I assume most hikers go to the far southern end of the little mountain range, as it’s alot bigger than the far northern end. Not higher, just bigger. The northern end is quite narrow in parts - not ‘exposure’ narrow, but narrow enough to have most not bother going there. I went to the northern end first, and located a benchmark that could easily have been gone, as even the NGS “wrote it off” as not being ‘survey worthy’. Well, MILL Triangulation Station (1924) may not be worthy for surveying, but it’s there and in perfect shape.

MILL Benchmark is associated with county boundary marker #18, and it too is in excellent shape. Frustum #18 is 95 feet further north and off the ridgeline. The frustum IS leaning a little bit, but might we all, when we get to the age of 91.

After wandering a bit further north, off Pikes Pk, I turned around and went to the larger, southern end. I located a very nice memorial for two gentlemen. Both must have been avid hikers. (Barrett had mentioned the memorial in a triplog, over a dozen years ago).

This was a fun little hike, and the 7 mile drive down the Morgan City Wash, to get to the ‘trailhead’, was alot of fun also. My only competition in the wash was a small family of wild burros. Cute little guys.
