Like a lot of states, Nevada has several peaks named "Black Mountain". In fact the Silver State has 7 P1K peaks with the name Black Mountain, including this one. This Black Mountain is near Henderson, and is in the northern part of the McCullough Range; it is also in the Sloan Canyon Conservation Area, which is administered by the BLM. Black Mountain - McCullough Range has an elevation of 5,092 feet and prominence of 1,612 feet.

I parked at the Shadow Canyon Trailhead (google maps calls it the Black Mountain Trailhead) which is in a nice residential area. There is space in the parking lot for 6 cars, but if the lot is full you can park on the road.

I began by taking the Anthem East Trail for a bit more than a quarter mile. This is a paved, multi-use trail that goes past some houses. Then I entered the Sloan Canyon Conservation area near a retention dam, and took Black Mountain Trail #404 to the top of Black Mountain. Trail #404 is well maintained and easy to follow. It starts off at a modest grade but steepens the closer you get to the mountain. The trail is well constructed and has a number of switchbacks which lessen the steepness. Closer to the summit the trail goes from an easy class 1 walk-up to some class 2 scrambling on basalt rocks and boulders. It is nothing tricky, but there are some knee-to-waist climbs where you will be using your hands for balance. There is a lot of scrub desert vegetation along the trail, and LOTS of basalt rocks. Typical of the northern part of the McCullough Range, Black Mountain is volcanic in origin. This contrasts with the southern part of the Range, which are ancient mountains made of metamorphic rock.

There are great views at the top, so I hung out there for a while. I returned the same way that I came, and when I got back to the TH I drove north to hike up to Gass Peak for my 2nd peak of the day.

Synopsis
I enjoyed this hike and if I lived in the area it would likely be my go-to workout hike. A nice thing about the hike is that you ascend from the west, so if you go early in the morning the mountain will block the sun on your ascent. I imagine that you could do this hike year round, although there is lots of sun exposure so I'd sure start early in warm weather.

I didn't know there was a McCullough? It seems not many on HAZ have hiked this, which is a bit surprising. Nice stroll for a few miles with lots of long switchbacks up the ridge, then a very steep climb up the final 0.4 miles. Awesome views from the top.

Loop up the main trail, along the ridge and down the "alternate" route.
The BLM has slapped a few signs on the use trail along the "alternate" route now. There has been much more use than the last time I was here. This is now a much less pleasurable way, with everything now loose and slippy. Assume they will wait until it becomes an eroded mess and then scurry to fix it.
Surprisingly, not too many people out.

While this wasn't the most exciting pick for the last day of a long weekend, at least it was close and required little driving. Also, most others were likely up at Mt Charleston or out at Red Rock, and I didn't want to get caught up in that mess.

The entire loop for this trail has now been signed. However, the northern half really just remains a use trail. I hear the BLM is planning to let the public make the trail via use, and then come in with a trail crew at the end to "clean it up." Pretty curious how that's going to play out. Meanwhile, I am guessing the signs are leading some to go on what they think is a built trail, like the southern half of this loop, and ending up mighty surprised by what they find.

Today, I used the northern half of the loop to ascend and the southern half to descend, as I had never previously done the loop in that direction. Turned out to be a good choice, as the more developed southern trail is currently extremely eroded in the steepest top sections. That would have been extremely demotivating on the way up, given the high humidity. Guess I really have lived in the Mojave for a long time, when 34% humidity leaves me drowning in a pool of sweat!

Given the time of day and heat, I was surprised to see 2 guys just reaching the top as I got there. Then, on the way down, I saw a lone woman headed up who seemed to be suffering quite a bit from the heat. No hat! I talked to her for a bit, making sure to ask if she had enough water, and then continued on my way.

Hot, humid day out there! Everyone needs to be careful.

Quick hike up Black Mountain. Quite a few people out, and most of them grumpy. It was a lovely day, though, and easy to ignore the grumpiness.
A sign denoting the "continuation" of Trail 404 along the ridgeline has now been added at the top. However, a sign does not a trail make, and there was no evidence of anything different than it has always been - a route across the ridgeline and then down a different ridge and along a wash.

Training hike. Loaded up the pack and headed up. Hot day. The trail had some erosion damage from our recent rains, but nothing too severe.

Passed a group of boy scouts on my way up. A few of the scouts chatted with me, while the others looked like they definitely did not want to be there. It was pretty hot, and they were all wearing new-looking boots, which can be unpleasant :( . The 2 I talked with told me it was their first hike in preparation for a one night backpacking trip - hope they have fun!

It had been a while since I hiked up Black Mountain, so that seemed like reason enough. Turned out to be a good choice, as the slopes were simply overflowing with flowers and color. The wind was terrible at the top, but there were about a half-dozen people on their way down as I hiked up. After enjoying the views, I decided to take an alternate route down along the next ridgeline. Here I found a traffic barrier light propped up on a pile of rocks, complete with corroded batteries. :? :? Guess it was just one of those days. But the highlight was all the flowers for sure!

The steeper, upper portion was a little more eroded than on my last visit, but overall still a pretty good trail.

The perennials are really showing their stuff - Mojave aster, globemallow, brittlebush, creosote, penstemon, with beavertail and hedgehog cacti.

A quick hike up and down Black Mountain. The sun was still plenty hot, but the (very strong) wind was cool, so it looks like autumn is finally here. :y:

Quick hike up and down Black Mtn. It was a hot day, and everyone else was finishing their hike about the time I started up. Nothing much of note, except that a large number of butterflies of several species were hanging out at the peak. Don't know what they were doing since there were no flowers, but it was nice to watch them and soak in the views.

Guess this half on-/half off-trail hike is becoming a standard loop for me now. Fiddled around with the GPS a bit to determine how it deals with routes and points in terms of navigation. Starting out, there were a few people finishing up for the day, but that was it. Guess 90 is just too hot for some people. There were a few strong gusts today, but mostly dead calm.
I will admit that it is highly disturbing how bright the solar thermal set-ups in Ivanpah Valley are from anywhere up on the ridgeline, some 40+ miles away. They look like something make-believe out of a science fiction novel.
Spotted four bighorn along the hike - 3 females and one baby. One of the females surprised me by popping up from the shade of a Joshua tree maybe 20-30 feet away. :o

Mostly it is the cholla left flowering now, with only a few other cacti here and there.

The air quality was terrible today, but I really needed to get out hiking after a week of building rodent-proof fence

Figure we'll be doing a straight Black Mountain many times in the coming months of training and hadn't done this part-on/part-off trail loop since Oct, so that seemed like reason enough. Lots of folks out to enjoy the warm weather, but no one after I turned off the main trail.

Started out up the Black Mtn trail, then cut over on 403 to gain the ridge line. Mainly, my route followed the ridge line up and around. The normally great views from the ridge were diminished by the air quality, so this ended up more as an exercise hike than an enjoyment hike. At the end of the ridge, I decided to go for the loop again by making my way down off-trail. I hadn't forgotten which ridge to take after the last time up here, but I had forgotten how painfully long it took to pick my way carefully over and across the loose volcanic boulders. It is surprising how tiring it can be to have to concentrate that hard on every step :o

Surprised to see no snakes on such a warm day, but plenty of lizards.

Very nice weather for an up and back of Black Mountain. Made a bit of a loop on the way down for a bit of a change of scenery. Surprisingly, not too many folks out today in spite of the perfect weather - guess they were busy wrapping presents or something...
On the way down, spent quite a while talking with some very nice folks from Manitoba who were headed up. They had seen 3 bighorns :D

Further exploration of some of the trails out at Sloan Canyon NCA. I'll have to take the time to write these trails up - some were quite intriguing and worth hiking.

Started out on 404 (Black Mountain), turned right on 402 (Connector Trail), which is merely a connector to 403 (Streaky Peak Loop). Turned right on 403, and took off on the unmarked, yet now finished, Trail 101 (Black Mtn - Petroglyph Cyn Connector Trail) to the west. This trail mostly skirts along the edge of the subdivisions in the flats. Nothing much to look at, nothing to suggest you are on your way to something amazing. Doesn't appear to see a lot of foot traffic. The washed-out conditions from the last time I was here were completely repaired when the crew completed the trail. The trail eventually dead-ends at a gravel road leading to Petroglyph Canyon.

This trip there was plenty of time to explore the trails around Petroglyph Canyon. After signing in at the information kiosk and noting the 7 vehicles somehow parked there (the parking normally accommodates ~4 :o ), I set off up the main wash. At the first branch, I figured why not go the opposite way we had already been, and set off up Trail 200 (Cowboy Trail). This trail turned out to be a pretty cool trek up the next wash over from Petrogylph Canyon. In and of itself, the trail traverses through some fascinating rock formations, also providing an alternate route to get up into Petroglyph Canyon past all of the dry falls. Trail 200 ended by dropping back into Petrogylph Canyon at the top.

Again, I decided to go a new way, and turned right up the canyon on Trail 300 (Hidden Valley Trail). Shortly, there is a group of wash-side boulders heavily covered with petroglyphs - I took this as a sign to continue :D Trail 300 continues up and along the wash, over a pass through some interesting rock formations, and down to the opposite side of the McCullough Range. After this, I turned around and headed back, with plans to return. Hiked back via the main Petroglyph Canyon - need to come back and spend an entire day just in this section (there are nearly 400 documented panels, so lots to see).

Good day on some new trails. In spite of all the vehicles, I only saw 2 people in Sloan Canyon - the site stewards. Good to know there are people who care enough to help take care of these truly special places.

I must protest the terribly uninspired naming of the trails - the name "Trail #100" hardly gets you excited. The trail names above are partly made up by me, and partly based on the schematic map at the Black Mtn trail head - the NCA's website doesn't include any names or numbers for any of the trails.

Hiked up the trail to Black Mountain on this lovely day. A chilly breeze kept the sun's heat at bay, and several others were out enjoying the weather. Not to mention the raven who followed me almost all the way up, landing in each Joshua tree along the way. Once at the peak, I took a bit of a snack break, but didn't hang out too long since the views were less than clear with poor air quality.

Decided to take an alternate route down by climbing north to the next peak, and then down that ridge - probably not an experience I will repeat. There is of course no trail, which is no problem, but multiple other hikers had seemingly all selected to take poor routes that further loosened the already unstable volcanic rocks all along the ridge. Normally, I enjoy the feeling of exploration that comes with a route I haven't traveled before, but this was 3 hours of thoroughly testing each and every rock before I dared step onto it :scared: - painfully slow to say the least. Apparently, the BLM is planning to position a loop trail for Black Mountain up this ridge sometime in the future. That is going to be a lot of hard work!

Either way, good day out stretching my legs :D

Great weather after yesterday's wind, so I decided on an off-trail loop up Fracture Ridge near Black Mtn. Started out up the Black Mtn trail, then cut over on 403 to gain the ridge line. Mainly, my route followed the ridge line up. Really great views from the ridge. At the end of the ridge, I decided to try for a loop by making my way down a different ridge. My first choice was poor, and I was forced to double back after cliffing out. But, I was able to use this failed attempt to scope out the other ridges, and select a better way down. It took a long time to pick my way carefully down the ridge covered wih volcanic boulders, so not sure I would go that way again, but it was fun to explore and get some new views.
Also, saw 3 bighorns :D

Started out up the trail up Black Mountain, but the wind was horrific each time the trail ran along the top or west side of the ridge. That wasn't fun, so I turned around and headed down to hike where the wind was less severe. Turned west (left) on 402, which is merely a connector to 403. Took 403 up to the top of Park/Streaky Peak and back down, traveling counterclockwise. The top of this peak is a cool jumble of volcanic rock with only modest views for the modest effort to reach the top. The still unmarked trail to the west, that leads to the Sloan Canyon Petroglyph Site, now officially connects to 403, but I didn't explore to see if it's been finished all the way through yet.
So windy, I saw no one on trail and only 1 raven.

The continuous breeze kept things from feeling too hot, even with temperatures well in the 90s. Quick out-and-back with full pack for training. I am trying to remain optimistic that my GC backpack will happen, and continuing to train gives me something to focus my mind on. Windy on the top and most of the way down, which afforded nice clear views from the peak.

The trail has been further re-routed to a few new series of switchbacks. I think this is now the final alignment. Although it makes the hike seems longer at some points, overall, this is a good thing. The old use trail was very eroded because it wasn't well located, but this new trail should remain in much better condition. The old use trail has been well filled in with rocks by the trail crew, so you are not remotely tempted to walk on it - unless you love twisted ankles, of course. ;)

Only a little trash to pick up today. Some of the people who live in this subdivision hike this peak almost every day, and seem to keep the trail well picked-up.

A quick spin to try out a possible solution to an issue with a pair of boots - seemed to work. :)
Did not ascend to the top. The sunset was surprisingly colorful due to smoke from fires in the area. Returning at twilight, the bats were out to play - always a great sight.
112 degrees at start, 108 degrees at return to vehicle.

Plenty of people out on the trail after the rain kept everyone inside the past 2 days. Pretty windy at the top, had to chase after my hat twice [-( ! My hands were frozen for the hike down (glad I always carry gloves in my pack). It gets pretty steep once you get to the top, but the reward comes quickly. Great views of the strip, but I found myself more entertained by the views of AZ on the other side. :)
