Was going to take this week off. A friend talked me into coming out. Came up with a plan but completely missed the turn. Eyed a turnoff to get back there but saw it wasn't much of a road. Oh, we can start a separate hike from here. Game on.

Yes Copper Trail is steep with little shade. Didn't plan on this so was dressed in all black. 🫤 Breeze did help. Then went up to Mt Francis. Took two different shortcuts. Then added a quick off trail peak.

Knock out an outing with decent numbers + a rd trip. Heading home early this time. Can still get out tonight. 🥊

This route includes almost all of East Copper Trail #260, downhill from Moby Trail #737. At the beginning of this route, you are hiking among Ponderosa pines for about 1.5 miles. The grade is not very steep, especially compared to the final 2 miles, after emerging from the Ponderosas to great views to the south, southwest and east. See photos. The uphill route on May 3, 2025 is saved separately.

Note that dirt bikes are permitted to use East Copper Trail, although I didn't encounter any between 6:30 am and 10:30 am on the first Saturday of May, just another pair of hikers near the end of my hike. You can hear the vehicles on AZ 89 for on the last 1.5 miles, mostly tire noise of cars and motorcycle engines.

The trail is narrow double track. Despite much of the loose dirt and small stones being removed by bikes, I regretted leaving my trekking poles behind, as I rely on them for steep descents of which there were many on the return trip.

This route ends at the parking area just off AZ 89, labeled Copper Creek Trailhead on Google Maps. The lower official trailhead for East Copper Trail is on FR 53. To reach AZ 89 from the official trailhead, it's a short distance up a steep and badly eroded road that only extreme 4-wheeled vehicles could negotiate safely.

Exploring more unknown routes on Mount Francis on a winter’s day: parked on Mount Francis road and hiked the East Copper Trail route south to the summit of Francis. First time on the true summit for me, not sure how I missed that all these hikes. Found a register and signed it. Descended a social trail on Francis’ south ridge to where it connected with (surprise) trail 737. Continued south on same social trail and it connected with Aspen Trail near point 6872. Went back the same way, then turned west onto 737 and followed it to where it ended at East Copper Trail. Sunset was illuminating the forest with a golden glow and chilly winds blew strong. Made a 180 and followed 737 all the way east to where it connected to an old road I had hiked on Francis’ east ridge. An apparent migraine headache was causing enough hallucinogenic visual interference for me to decide to head back to the truck, while my self-destructing knee was telling me even the ice packs weren’t helping enough today; you’re done, time to schedule surgery. Rough way to end my last hike of the year, but Mexican food for dinner at Casa Sanchez afterward was nice.
Quite a nice little network of trails on Mount Francis I hadn’t known about before. Added 2 miles to triplog from another walk earlier in the day.

Coming back from Sierra Prieta overlook, my dad dropped me off at the Copper Basin divide, and I ventured on foot up the road to Mount Francis. I made a zigzag descent off of Mount Francis’ north ridge and arrived on trail 737, a new one to me, and a worthy trail in my opinion. Trail 737 ended near the north end of Aspen Trail, so I followed it and then hiked Copper Basin Road back to the parents’ house. Familiar area and an unfamiliar trail: good combo.

Nice hike in Prescott with cooler temps and whispering pines. Windy. Lots of birds and a rattlesnake hiding in a bush. No people. Fun day!

Got dropped off at the lower trailhead on highway 89 on the way into Prescott and started up the ridge at the bullet-riddled East Copper Trail sign. Cloudy skies, bitter wind, frosted summits of the Bradshaws and numerous deer prints in the muddy trail were my only company. A dusting of snow lingered in the shade higher up. The trail is still nicely groomed and easy to follow. The mine tunnel at 6100’ has been gated by the Forest Service. Turned onto the south end of Aspen Creek Trail for the first time and started following it north. I was a little unsure which route was Aspen at an unmarked trail junction at 6800’ but a HAZ gps route showed the way. Spooked a solitary deer who went airborne in front of me. Made it to Copper Basin Road at dark, chilled and damp, right in time to get picked up by Shauna in a toasty truck.

Aspen Creek Trail #48 starts across Copper Basin Road from Aspen Creek Trailhead parking lot. Last couple miles to trailhead on Copper Basin Road is dirt road and fords Aspen Creek before reaching parking lot. Creek bed is concrete where Copper Basin Road crosses the creek which could be a problem during monsoon or snow melt.

Loop consists of Aspen Creek Trail #48 to a small section of East Copper Trail #260 north to Moby Trail #737 and return on Aspen Creek Trail #48. Looking at profile, it may be easier in reverse direction by turning right onto Moby Trail #737 off of Aspen Creek Trail #48. However, I like the views ahead in the direction taken and there is a steep section at the south end of Aspen Creek Trail #48 on which I prefer going downhill.

Great views of mountains and valleys southwest of Prescott, AZ, including Prescott, Thumb Butte and Granite Mountain near beginning and end. From the the south end of Aspen Creek Trail #48 and East Copper Trail #260 there are views of Skull Valley and mountains near Yarnell in middle of hike. Vegetation starts with Ponderosa pine and Gambel oak mix and becomes juniper, manzanita, desert holly and prickly pear mix during middle of hike. Hike can be extended by taking East Copper Trail #260 (middle section of loop) in either direction, south is downhill and north is uphill. Some of the best views are on East Copper Trail #260 are just south of the loop.

A few wildflowers near Aspen Creek at the beginning and end of the trail. Prickly pear near the south end of Aspen Creek Trail #48.

Started from the Aspen Creek trailhead at 7:30am and 36 degrees. Found signs warning of a mountain bike race, luckily for the next day. Headed south on Aspen Creek trail to East Copper trail. Took Copper up to Mount Francis road to the top of the mountain. Followed a jeep road north from the summit back to Aspen Creek trail for a short walk back to the trailhead. Saw a bunch of mountain bikes out enjoying the day and some hikers with a lack of a plan and destination looking for the communication towers. Lots of Oak Apples (galls) on Aspen Creek trail. Nice tarantula on East Copper trail.

Despite leaving home 15 minutes later normal (5:30 a.m.) managed to arrive at the trailhead 30 minutes ahead of time (7:30 a.m.), without any more speeding than normal. Personally, I'd avoid camping at White Spar, as Hwy. 89 traffic noise is too obvious.

My plan was to hike Wolverton Mountain Trail #9415, Aspen Creek Trail #48 and East Copper Trail #260. According to my route, it was supposed to be 10.91 miles and 1923 AEG. Since those numbers are always low, I figured it would be a 12 mile, 2000 AEG day.

Trail #9415 started out through a mile of damp high top pine. As with Trail #48, the trail surface is very smooth, but the route is unnecessarily twisty. I suspect it was optimized for mountain biking, rather than hiking. (I saw four bikers and no hikers along the two trails.) After a mile, #9415 began edging along a large burn area, to the south, away from town, where there was not a single living pine tree. Not one. :o Any idea when that fire was?

After three miles, I cut up to FR 9707V, which curls around the south side of what I now refer to as Quarry Hill. I heard ATVs up in the quarry, so when I heard them coming back my way I ducked down behind some bushes in case they were miners. I spent a fair bit of time exploring the hill, hoping for some shafts, adits, equipment -- anything -- but finding only some quarry digs. The white rock was beautiful. The summit had incredible 360° views of Thumb Butte, Little Granite Mountain, Granite Mountain, Prescott, Spruce Mountain, Union Mountain, and Mt. Francis. If you do Trail #9415, I highly recommend this small diversion.

I stopped by the first gate to take a wizz. After I finished, I realized I was only a few feet from a grave. I would have been mortified had I accidentally peed on it. Turns out there were three graves in the pet cemetery.

As far as the hiking itself goes, Trail #48 was the highlight, with lots of shade and only some slight up & downs.

At the hike's highpoint, in the saddle between Mt. Francis and Hill 6872, you can see all the way to Peeples Valley and Yarnell Hill.

Trail #260 was steep, rocky and slippery. Almost fell a couple of times. :| Despite black clouds and heavy rain over the Bradshaws, I only experienced a minute of invisible drizzle, near the end of my hike. Hiked the last four miles with a massive blister on my left heel. Ooh-rah. :D

On the way back into Phoenix, I usually stop at the Culvers on Deer Valley Rd., but I just wasn't feeling it. Wife made a great suggestion to stop at Boston Market on Bell & 3rd St. instead. Calorie replacement ensued.
