This would be one of the last trails I needed to do, to be done with this area. The trail takes off at the SW corner of the parking lot. Easy trail to follow…all road. About .3 miles in, there was a single track and then right after that a dual track that both headed off to the west. Might be worth a follow up. A couple of hills initially and then around .8 miles it drops into valley. This was the first feeling of isolation. Up until that time, the trail paralleled the White Spar Rd so the sounds of vehicles was a constant companion. The trail/road, which had been high clearance drivable changed at this time as well. After the valley, the trail started a steady climb and became more suited for quads. Trail ended at 1.66 miles. Noticed a ribboned, single track that took off to the south immediately across the road. Followed it for several turns and the ribbons and single track continued. The wife was scheduled to come back for me so I couldn’t explore, but that single track is definitely worth a return a visit. It may end up being nothing, but it looked promising.
I didn’t want to do an in and out, so where the Ponderosa “T”ed into the road I followed the road west for about .3 miles to where I came upon an ATV track heading in the general direction of the TH. I wasn’t sure where it went, but I felt fairly certain that it would get me close to where I wanted and maybe, if I was lucky, end up being the dual track I saw at the .3 mile mark. The ATV track split a couple of times and I kept choosing the option that I thought would get me back to the Ponderosa. I ended up succeeding, but on what ended up, being a very faint track that I had not noticed on my hike in on the Ponderosa.
Nice lasso loop. Pretty much all road or ATV, but it was forested And, I did find some single tracks that might worth exploring. Had the forest to myself. Didn’t see anyone. Wildlife included a squirrel and 4 deer. On the drive in, my wife and I encountered 16 deer!!! just before the White Spar TH. I think that’s the most deer I’ve seen at one time. There was a good number of youngsters in the herd. Weather was nice! In the 50’s. I was almost beginning to feel…..cold. It’s been awhile since I thought that. |
