I've dubbed this the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde loop.

We hit it up counterclockwise, which is highly recommended (get the bushwhacking done, and enjoy better views on the ridgeline on the return).

First up, Mr. Hyde, aka, Deer Creek trail. The trail is easy to follow for the first couple of miles on the way to the Deer Creek drainage and up paralleling a private cattle operation past David Gowan's grave.

Shortly after, we began commenting that it appears Mother Nature is trying to reclaim this trail. That comment proved prophetic, as it became very clear that She is succeeding. Tons of bushwhacking, very sparse indications of a trail, and forests of poison ivy to contend with. Trail maintenance seems to consist of cairns--many of which are quite large and helpful, and actually do a reasonably good job of assisting hikers navigate. That said, having the gps route downloaded was very helpful, and despite the cairns, we found ourselves consulting it regularly (and often having to adjust our course to stay "on route").

From about mile 3 to just shy of mile 9, it's solid bushwhacking. Long pants mandatory if you care about your legs; long sleeves are probably a good idea as well, though I managed to keep the damage minimal in short sleeves.

The only redeeming qualities of this section were: (1) solitude (it appeared that only about 5 people hike this entire section each year), and (2) the creek, which had a decent flow in it for nearly the entirety of the section, despite the very dry winter.

Eventually, about 9 miles, the trail turns up steeply and way from the creek for an abrupt climb that pops out at the Mt. Peeley trailhead. There were two cars at the TH and while we were taking a break, one of their owners and his friend returned to the TH from their hike up Peeley. They were the first humans we encountered.

From there, it was a couple miles of road walk to connect over to the Gold Ridge trail. Normally, I'm not a fan of road walks, but this was very welcome after several miles of bushwhacking. Plus, the views of the surrounding Mazatzals provided ample distraction.

The turn off to Gold Ridge starts as an old FS road, suitable for SxS, but it is clear trai for hikers. Near the "official" start/end of Gold Ridge, the "road" turns into a single track. We were worried that we would need to do more bushwhacking, but were pleasantly surprised to see Gold Ridge was very well maintained--clear of the ubiquitous manzanita that lines the trail for miles, and smooth tread underneath the foot. We found that this is also open to mountain bikers, and we saw one come through as we hiked.

The Ridge, as its name suggests, offers great views of the mountains and provided a delightful descent, which gets pretty steep in sections.

The last mile or so to the TH is a bit ho-hum. The prickly pear blooms are about to explode. If you want a great show, they will likely be popping next week.

Overall, I don't think I'll be doing Deer Creek again anytime soon, but Gold Ridge as an out and back seems to be a pretty ideal R2R training hike.

As much as I love this trail I have to say it may be the most difficult trail in the Mazatzals due to, in my estimate a 45 to 50 degree slope in spots where it is more of a scramble with at least 3 points of contact used for safe climb. Although the trees are gone in some of the lower sections it is very green due to the variety of mtn shrubs including manzanita, service berry and unkown species that are tall enough to provide some shade however there is about a mile section around 5000 ft mtn tops with little to no shade. The hike would have been even nicer except for the Maple and Gambel Oak not yet leafed out. Temps were around 80 but breezy in the hottest part of the day during my siesta. (103 degrees in Phx) I waited, napped out the worst of the sun from 1230 to 330 and it did help. The upper section (5000+) appears to be an old mine road and is much easier to traverse than the lower section that must have been built by mountain goats. Green grass in sections. Carried 1.5 gallons of water and was the 1st time in a long time I had plenty. Strapped the gallon of water to my walking stick and carried it as a bindle, easier than in my pack. Saw coyotes, gila monster, dragon fly, quail, blue birds, crows, and rabbits. Possible elk tracks. No other hikers on the trail or at the trailhead. No recent bear or lion sign.

Pleasantly surprised by how good of shape Gold Ridge Trail is currently. The same can't be said about the return hike down South Fork. I doubt I'll hike either of these trails again unless my wife suggests it (unlikely). I'd go again with her on Gold Ridge, but I'd prefer to stay married, so South Fork would be a hard no. It's not really a trail anymore, more like a route involving >50% bushwacking, weird obscure bypasses and a bunch of downfall steeplechase. There were a few enchanting spots in South Fork, but mostly it's another forest bath with a bunch of bear poop along the route. Lots of hunters near the bottom and the top sections, but no deer sightings. I think they're all going to be disappointed with their hunts in this area.

Wally and I got an early start on this one, just after 6am. It was just far enough north to get out of the heat and close enough to avoid a longer drive. The steepness of the trail is usually the trade off for this kind of hike, but right now that's actually what I'm looking for.

We had hiked down this trail 15 years earlier doing the South Fork-Gold Ridge loop. seems like South Fork is still a mess, so we opted to just hike Gold Ridge up and back down. Miles 2 and 3 are the steepest parts, with a few really steep sections. Normally after a bit of a warm up I start to get a 2nd wind and the climbing gets easier. This time, it seemed like it never got any easier. This was surprising to me especially after all the more strenuous hikes I've been doing recently. We only topped out at 6000' so it couldn't have been the elevation. Even on the way down I felt kind of spent. After I got halfway thru my 2nd Camelbak bladder I felt better, so I'm thinking I was a bit dehydrated.

15 years ago there was a cart [ photo ] on the upper end of the trail that seems to have disappeared. We had lunch at the camping spot at the top of the trail by a 4WD road. Lots of empty casing and live casings bullets were left there. Wally lined them up for pics and then realized his fingerprints were all over them which could lead to an issue if the nearby vultures were looking for human remains we may have been unaware off  . Fun times.

Drove by the fire on the 87 on the way back. We first noticed that it was "a bit hazy" near Mt. Ord, then noticed it was only hazy in parts of the sky. Then we saw the column of smoke. Fortunately we never saw the backup of cars because only the NB lanes were closed :y: . I had first planned to hike the Ballantine Trail before I decided on Gold Ridge. This fire totally engulfed the Ballantine Trail as the lower portions and as far up as we could see. I was beyond very happy with my choice of hike for the day at this point.

On the way back on the Bush Hwy we saw 8 police vehicles flying the other way with the flashers on. Looks like we dodged several bullets this day, both metaphorical and literal. Once I got home I hunkered down for the rest of the day.

On the drive up we passed hikerdw on SR87. I'm guessing they went to Mt Ord? The Gold Ridge trail put the steep in Lipton or maybe I'm just getting old. The climb was gradual until it wasn't. The morning started cool but quickly warmed up on the exposed trail. I stopped higher up and sat in the shade and got a chill but that didn't last. Not much fauna but I did see a deer and the circling turkey vultures at lunch. Lots of pine cones, shell casings and a few live rounds at the campsite. The views were green and expansive. The trail is easy to follow and I would enjoy it more on a cool day. Chris seams to like the heat and I can tolerate it. It was warm at the finish. The worst part is carrying the extra pounds of water/ice but survival is high on the list.

Chris and I got started from the Deer Creek trailhead around 0730. First mile was easy. Next couple of miles were very steep. Several small stops to breathe and enjoy the views. Once past the steepest parts, the incline moderated, and it was a nice hike uphill. Some snow on the upper part of the trail, and the soil was frozen for roughly the top two miles. Breezy and cool, but it felt nice. Walked past the end of the trail up to the road, passing a few nice campsites.

Downhill was pretty easy. The steep part had some loose rock, but not as bad as I thought it might be. Warm by the time we finished. Saw one squirrel, some deer tracks, and tons of coyote scat. Only one other hiker and his dog, a red heeler. I’d never been on Gold Ridge Trail before, so it was nice to see.

This was the third weekend out of the last four that I hiked in the Mazatzals...didn't plan it that way, but it's hard to beat great views and a relatively short drive. This was the first time either of us had started from Deer Creek Trailhead, and both trails on the South Fork-Gold Ridge loop were also new ones for us. There were a few vehicles and a hunter in the parking lot when we arrived ~7AM, and it was in the mid/upper-40s and pretty comfortable as we set out.

We hiked the loop clockwise, turning left off Deer Creek Trail to start up Gold Ridge Trail. As advertised, it was wide and well maintained and gained a lot of elevation, with some steep/loose sections on the way up...but it was efficient and didn't waste time with switchbacks :). A little over 3.5 miles in, I left the trail to go up to the "GOLD" benchmark on peak/hill 5776. It's only a quarter mile off the trail but pretty brushy getting up there. I pulled out the gloves and clippers again and picked up another round of Mazatzal scratches to add to the collection.

But it was a worthwhile detour--it's a unique "double gold" benchmark, both gold in color, which I'd never seen, and also stamped with the "GOLD" name. Plus it's set on a beautiful multi-colored rock outcropping. I found it hidden under a rock as FLYING FLIVER described in an old triplog, and I noticed it doesn't have a triangle symbol like most benchmarks...not sure if the triangle appears only on newer benchmarks, because this one was placed in 1926. Peak/hill 5776 isn't the highest point in the general vicinity, but the views are nice.

[ youtube video ]

I headed back down to the trail, and we continued along Gold Ridge to FR 3348 and crossed paths with a tarantula along the way. We followed 3348/201 past some nice campsites and started down South Fork Trail. Pigeon Spring had a pool of stagnant, algae-covered water near it, and the trail was hard to follow as we climbed over a lot of deadfall through the fire-damaged area around there. We eventually got down to the creek bed and picked up some cairns...it was slow going, but there was a lot of nice fall color along the creek. We saw occasional pools of water, but nothing too substantial after the dry year.

The loop is a tale of two halves...where Gold Ridge was wide, well-maintained, and extremely easy to follow, South Fork was the opposite--often hard to find, narrow, and overgrown. We climbed over and under a lot of deadfall along the way, and cairns made it easier to spot the trail further along, but the GPS often came in handy as well. The next few miles were a blur, following the trail as it alternated between following the rocky creek bed and climbing up onto one of the banks to bypass cliffs or large obstacles. There were a number of spots where the sloping, loose trail was very narrow as we passed some sheer drops--places where a slip would be very bad. After a few more years of erosion, some of those spots could get really interesting as the trail continues to wash out...

The cairn frequency increased as we got closer to the trailhead, and the canyon started to open up with ~2.5 miles remaining as the trail flattened out a little and became easier to follow, eventually crossing the wide wash and then leveling off to close the loop. We kept an eye out out for the old stone cabin mentioned in the guide but didn't see it...the guide is 20+ years old, so I'm guessing the cabin's not there anymore. Other than the hunter in the morning and a trail runner near the trailhead at the end of the day, we didn't see anyone all day. It was another fun one in the Mazatzals...lot of variety in the scenery, nice fall color and geology, and a double gold benchmark along the way.

Started around 10 AM. Warmed up to around roughly 80 degrees up higher and then the clouds and light to moderate rain dropped temps to upper 50s - low 60s. Saw a number of new pine trees growing along the trail down to about the 5300 ft level. Spooked a deer. Saw more squirrels than I have seen in years in the area. Could explain all the young new trees. A handful of mature Ponderosas and Fir trees here and there. I really enjoy the upper 2.5 miles of this trail with plenty of trees for shade for the dog. The first 2 miles are scenic but very exposed with little (a few larger Service Berry Shrubs for shade) to no shade and VERY steep in a few sections. Manzanita berries are starting to dry out and tasted sweet. Unripe/new berries are very bitter. Acorns were not bad, slightly bitter. Better if boiled. No fall colors just yet.

I decided to do this loop to get a workout and to check out the wildflowers in the area.

I definitely got a workout going up the Deer Ridge Trail to Camp Grasshopper. There were quite a few flowers to see along the trail, and I also saw a gopher snake in the trail.

Going down the South Fork Trail was slow going. The trail is not easy to follow, but thankfully there were quite a few cairns which were helpful. There was water running along much of the South Fork, but the flow is less than what I have seen in other years. Wildflowers were nice in a one mile stretch of the South Fork Trail, about a mile from the TH. Owl clover is only about 3-4 inches high though.

I had an evening event so this one made sense for a solid day that doesn't take too long and is close enough to get there and back without too much driving time. Caught a glimpse of an eagle as we drove over the Verde, which is always enjoyable.

A surprising number of vehicles at the trailhead to start, but we determined that they were all hunters, and as is not atypical, the parking lot is just about as far as they ever got.

Entirely out of the wilderness and easily accessed by roads at both ends, Gold Ridge has taken on some new life as a downhill mountain biking trail. Not that we encountered any, but the increased impact of fat tires in the dirt had the tread nicely worn and free from any of the usual Mazzy overgrowth. It is of course, as steep as always!

I think there's a new sign at South Fork. Downhill in the drainage was a bit overgrown as expected, but featured a lot more autumn color than I thought there would be. The creek was running nicely and we made good time down the hill.

I sort of forgot how long the bottom traverse across the grasslands are. The sun was a little warm and down here the summer rains have sprouted grasses that have almost completely engulfed the trail. There's tread under there but it took careful attention to stay on route.

It was grasshopper mating day and there were hoppers jumping at our feet for pretty much all 13 miles. Speaking of grasshoppers, when we arrived at the camp that bears his name, we had to put out the fire that whoever had slept there last night had left so hot it literally burst into flames while we were snacking nearby. This kind of feces doesn't even surprise me anymore.

Trailhead almost empty when we ended, and home so early there was time for a bonus nap! :y:

Headed for an easy access trail after the rain. Picked Gold Ridge trail, Deer Creek TH right off Hwy 87 to avoid mud bogging off pavement. This is my first time on Gold Ridge Trail and I was surprised at how steep it is. 50 or 60 degree slop in a few spots is my guess! Trail levels out around 5000 ft but from about 4000 to 5000 ft.. steep! Some new mtn bush that I don't recognize has grown to 7 or 8 ft high in places provided some shade when needed. North end of Gold Peak appeared to have a healthy forest in drainage. Spotted Pine and possibly Maple. Would like to explore further. Spent the night on the trail with the sound of running water from both sides of the ridge and a cool 64 degrees at sunrise. 3 Deer and mouse spotted along the way. Detoured to Hardt Creek for a refreshing soak.

I enjoy this hike in late winter or early spring, so I decided to do it today. The hike was not as enjoyable as normal due to high temperatures, lower than normal water flow in the south fork of deer creek, and almost no wildflowers.

On the plus side, the South Fork Trail was in pretty good shape, and was much easier to follow than on my prior hikes on the trail.

I went up the Gold Ridge Trail, stopped at Camp Grasshopper for a break, and then came on the South Fork Trail.

This hike is a good workout, and I enjoyed the hike even though the conditions weren't as good as normal.

Monday morning, start at sunrise. Gold Ridge trail super easy to follow, and trail is well maintained. first 0.75 miles casual stroll and then for the next 2.5 mile quite steep climb. This eases off for the rest of the Gold Ridge let to the road at about 6 miles into the hike. Then follow the road for another 0.8 miles to the sign nailed to a tree indicating where the south-fork hike starts.

South Fork trail is faint and there is a bit of treefall to navigate around. but with GPS trail as a guide you can generally follow the trail. This progressively gets better as you go along. About a mile or two down the trail we ran into the first person of the day. Didn't catch his name, he was cutting a tree that was on the trail. Apparently he came up to do some trail maintenance and "Get some exercise!" More power to him! really appreciate guys like him and other who contribute to this website, makes life so much easer for the rest of us slackers!

As stated earlier, the trail is pretty easy to follow after about 1-2 miles although not in nearly as good of condition as the Gold Ridge is. Character of the South Fork is quite different from the Gold Ridge. Gold Ridge is a straight shot, while South fork has a bit of navigation around obstacles and multiple stream crossing (nothing difficult) as this trail generally is following the streambed.

About at mile 9 I was dragging and exhausted. We came across a nice little watering hole (there are quite a few) and I proposed to the wife we take a break. The water was cold, so I decided to jump in. It was Coooold :o , but I found it really braced me up and I felt much better and ready to take on the rest of the hike. :) The wife dipped her legs in the pool also, and she said it made her feel much better. Didn't realize this could help so much. I'll need to keep that in mind for future hikes if near cool water.

After the cool break, we continued on the hike that gets progressively easier to follow and the slope also progressively gets less aggressive. Finally arrived at the car at 12:45.

An exhausting hike, but really did enjoy it.

On Sunday, the 14th, my wife and hiked about three miles (and then back) of the Gold Ridge Trail.

We were delighted (and relieved) to see that this area was untouched by the Bush Fire of 2020.

Trail conditions were somewhat damp, but good. We met some backpackers who told us that it had snowed the night before. The trail was well defined and easy to follow. I had forgotten how unrelenting the steep sections are!

Was going to do an overnighter, but the weather forecast was looking a bit miserable Saturday night... So we decided to do a day hike instead. Friend mentioned Deer Creek TH, and I said I'd be perfectly happy to hit those trails again.

Deer Creek had good water the whole way, and there was still snow down below 5,000 in the shade of the canyon. About mid way up I got my annual fall out of the way when some sneaky vines tripped me up in the creek bed...

Up on the road it was a bit chilly in the exposed areas, with some good snowpack still in the shady areas. Gold Ridge had patches of snow until just before the steep part, and it got so gusty it was hard to stay upright. Glad we decided not to camp.

Went out for some quail. Decided to take gold ridge which doesnt seem to be used much. Made it up in to the srcub which I came across a mule deer. Headed back down to south fork and into a little side canyon. Views were great and was sprinkled on alittle bit. Theres snow up on the ridgeline.

First time back into the Mazzies since spring, hopefully my last hike in the 90s for the year. Ended up road walking to Peeley to get a glimpse of the fall color up there and enjoy the breezy autumn weather in the pines.

Started around sunrise, first one there. Impressive herd mooed good morning and scattered into the hills. Gold Ridge in great shape, those mountain bikers do good work.

Camp Grasshopper only signs of human life on the day. Two tents, one pitched at the last campsite and one along the way. Road's clear and rerouted around the last deadfall.

Walked to S Fork upper TH and felt like maybe I'd take a shot at Peeley. Been nursing a heel injury for two weeks and decided against it. Ate lunch at the TH and admired the even turn of the oaks. One of the best oak showings I've seen. Gold in color, even turn all along the 201. Maple Draw prime maples with yellow oaks mixed in.

Real autumn show was South Fork. Good maples up and down; many were deep or dull red, and a lot were a cherry blossom pink. Bright gold oaks and riparian trees complemented nicely. Better than expected, good color pretty much all the way down. Flowing water for much of S Fork. Comes and goes but reliably there.

Saw no hikers on the day. Lots of cows, birds of terrific colors and songs, and a tarantula. Only car at DC start and finish.

Pretty constant. Terrific oak display from Grasshopper to Peeley. S Fork is the show, good maples and mix of colors. Cold snap coming soon and will wind autumn down quickly.

Really a Gold Ridge - Peeley - Deer Creek route but I wanted continuity with a hike I did in January when I wasn't able to get it all done counterclockwise. There are a few advantages to taking the loop clockwise. I think there's about 400ft less elevation gained. Maybe this is just a personal preference, but Gold Ridge is prettiest at sunrise as Deer Creek is in the light of day. DC is cooler than GR during the middle and later parts of the day, and obviously there's water all the way down. Gave it a second go, starting a quarter before 6am.

Gold Ridge is as usual in just about perfect shape. Good wildflower display on the lower and middle portions of trail. The deadfall has been cleared off the upper parts of the trail. Camp Grasshopper is clear for high clearance and good tires.

Saw the first people on the Divide Trail, a trio of backpackers. East slopes of Peeley the day started to feel warm. Cooled off under the pines on the north side and on the summit. Terrific visibility that turned hazier as increasing wind blew distant smoke around to the south. Plus the Phoenix haze that not even a state of emergency and stay at home orders can lift from the city.

Saw the second and last person on the day at the upper Deer Creek trailhead. Headed down the sharp grade and took a break at Gowan Camp. Good flow of water in Deer Creek and the wildflowers were constant. Water wasn't very cold and didn't help much cooling off. Trail has more deadfall than in January, and the grasses have grown in over the trail in parts. Route's easy to find, and there are regular cairns. Trail is noticeably warmer from the grave site to the trailhead.

Ended up around 90 degrees when I finished. The water and wildflower situation is at peak but probably on the way down, week or two to be worth much. There was a small brush fire at the Sycamore Creek turn off opposite the one to Four Peaks on the way back to Phoenix.

An escape from the Valley. First time at this trailhead. Probably much more fun in Feb/Mar.

Impressive elevation gain after the first mile. Whole lot of heavy breathing. At 2.6 miles I decided to turn around. The big hill looming in front of me was gonna take a big bite, and I had to go back the way I came. I'll save that one for a day when I'm strong enough to make it all the way and take a loop back on the less steep South Fork trail. Still working on it.

Windy out for the latter two thirds of the hike. Large patches of wildflowers on the southern facing slopes about a third of the way in.

I went for the exercise. My legs are feeling it.
