The drive for this hike was horrendous. The guide for the hike states that a sedan could make the drive if dry, but there is no friggin' way that a sedan could drive on FR 609. I drove on FR 609 for 12.5 miles until I parked. I am sure that it took me well over 2 hours to make the drive on the way in. On the way out, I tracked it on my garmin and it took one hour 52 minutes. It was a slow, very rocky, rutty drive that required careful tire placement much of the way.

The hike itself wasn't too bad, at least not compared to the drive in. I found a place to park 2.2 miles from my intended parking spot. I walked the road for about 3/4 mile, and then busted up some slopes to a ridgeline that was NE of the summit. Then I followed the ridgeline to the summit. I reversed course on the way back.

The ascent up to the ridgeline was steep, but wasn't all that bad. There was some brush along the way, but I was able to find lanes through most of it. Plus I was encapsulated in body armor, so I was well protected!

There were great views at the summit, so I hung out there for a bit before heading back.

Synopsis
The hike wasn't as bad as I thought that it would be, but the drive took way longer than I thought that it would. I will not drive on that road again, so this hike is a DNR for me.

I had some concerns about crossing Tonto Creek east of Punkin center on Greenback Rd, not knowing how deep it was. Luckily a pickup crossed in the other direction, showing me the depth. It was fine with HC 2wd.

Picture Mountain
This is a walk up FR875 which is steep and loose. The views are the payoff here. We saw the Fliver disks, added our names to Peak register, and started for Bear Head Mountain.

Bear Head Mountain

The views change tremendously. We continued down FR875 looking towards the 2012 Mistake fire scarred Bear Head Mountain. When FR875 abruptly ends we continued up hill to the peakish area. Climbing up the west face, we had little trouble finding a path. In 5 years, that'll be a different story. The views up top are 360. We originally had plans to hit the other peak to the east. Unfortunately. the eastern side of Bear Head Mountain 6610' was too slow going through the mine field of downed trees. We headed down the drainage towards FR609.

Copper Mountain
We decided to attack this one attempting to follow the dashed "Trail" line to the top. There were hints of trail every now and then, but that was about it. It was thick and slow going through the Manzanita, but the payoff was worth it. One of the best lunch spots ever. It was hard to leave the views after lunch. On the return, we opted for a much shorter steep bushwhack down a ravine. After all, it couldn't be worse than what we came up.... It worked out.

On the way down we stumbled on a plane wreck from 1970.

It was a fun day exploring a new area.

Preamble
A recent trip to Gun Creek combined with a nearby FLIVER triplog prompted me to suggest this area to Bruce. He threw it together and off we went. This route is primarily forest roads. Pines galore and the opportunity to see Malicious Gap was the appeal.

Approach
Just under a 2 hour drive from Desert Ridge seemed reasonable for the tall pines and nice views. The drive in shakes your noggin. Doable in 2wd high clearance if the road is dry.

Action
The road heading up Picture Mountain is steep. Soon we found what Bruce calls FLIVER dust on the disc markers. The Mazzies north and south looked impressive. FR 875 fizzles out just heading up Bear Mountain 6610. Bear is nice but no reason to return. We skipped plans for 6650 since the off trail was more involved than anticipated. Dropped down an upper tributary of Bear Head Canyon to FR 609 ( she's real fine, 200 more in fact ). The creek was semi scenic for a stretch due to nice granite? or such.

After 2 hours and 5 miles we jumped onto a trail that ascends Copper Mountain. There is no trail, just stretches of use-trail. Views off Copper Mountain are spectacular. This is a return destination in my opinion.

Synopsis
The day was a hit by temps alone. Wispy clouds and a constant cool breeze. The off trail wasn't horrible, just had the hike registered as a road hike.

Following the ridge line to this peak is scenic, but the Mistake Peak fire of 2012 really did a number on the area. There are charred trees along the hike. I didn't notice the charcoal smudges on my cloths and skin until I got back to the car. It was probably because of all the heavy patches of manzanita we had to plow through. Every hike poses its own set of challenges. This one was worth the effort with 360 degree panoramic views and quiet solace at the destination.

Another SOTA peak on my list was checked off today. This peak had not been activated yet by anyone in the SOTA group. Myself Charlie and Mark from the Superstition ARC decided to put this one on the air for the first time. This was Marks first outing for SOTA. We made good time to the summit even with the dense brush in areas. The view form the summit was great and the area the drive to the TH was actually nice as well. You could do this trip with a pick-up 2wd ahen dry but its likely high clearance 4wd when wet.

We left Cherokee at our campsite on FR609 heading up the first few hundred feet of actual trail, which soon faded to nothing. Next came bushwhacking through pines, heavy brush and Manzanita until we hit the first burned area. The going was easy here until climbing to the first summit along the way, Peak 6564. Just short of the summit the heavy brush returned, dogging us off and on until the saddle before the last climb to the Copper Mountain summit. The last segment was burned area so again we made good time.

After signing the summit log and taking the requisite summit video and photos we headed back. Tracey didn't care for so much bushwhacking so on the return trip we stayed in the burned areas as much as possible. While some folks hate to see the devastation after a fire, I do not, after all it is simply nature at work. (This fire was lighting-ignited, but even if it were not there would still be a rebirth.)

I'm posting 50 photos on HAZ, the full set of 65 is here:
