2nd time here. 10 Jeep pack heading up 41. I wasn't part of the fun. Although, after a 4 year lapse I am a Jeep owner again.

On the drive in, I got the dreaded ice may be present on the road warning :scared: . It was cold but nothing 3 layers won't solve. Started about 10am and it was 45 degrees. The hike is straight up, you gain almost 700ft in a half mile. There are a couple of false peaks but since its so short they aren't bothersome. You could wear shorts on this. Good warmup hike. The roads were in great shape.

I've been wanting to hike up Monument Mountain for a long time, mostly to find the geocache GC13Y00 (Cook Mesa Cache) which had not been logged in over ten years. Took me about 80 minutes to get to the base of the mountain, followed FR 24, then turned left on FR 41. Followed FR 41 for about 1.5 miles till I reached a pull off at N 34° 00.513 W 111° 53.744.

Was originally going to follow Flying Fliver's GPX track, but he started a bit further down FR 41 then I had gone, so I didn't do that. The first 0.1 miles up where not that bad, but it got steep pretty quick, so I had to slow down and be much more careful, as there were a lot of loose rocks and soil. I believe the elevation gain from my truck to the summit was around 800 feet. I made it to the top in 37 minutes, that includes the time spend on breaks.

I found the survey marker in great shape. The marker was monumented in 1924 and is at an elevation of 5002 feet. I also found the geocache, most recent log was back in 2016, so this cache has not gotten many finds. Took nothing and left nothing in the geocache, except my name on the logbook of course.

I also planned to head to the Yavapai/Maricopa county line to find the concrete frustum. N 34° 01.128' W 111° 53.715' I planned to place a geocache near the frustum. Headed down the mountain to a saddle where I had to fight my way through man thorny plants, good thing I wore pants. It smoothed out once I reached the saddle and I continued this way for about 0.3 miles to the frustum. The frustum is in good shape, with one side saying Maricopa 1924, the other saying Yavapai 1924, and the last side showing distances to the other frustums along the county line. Also saw the nearby Magazine Tank, which looked to be about halfway full of water.

After finding the frustum and placing a geocache, I headed back to Monument Mountain and headed back down to my truck. Had a lot of fun with this hike and enjoyed the great views from the summit.

Tom & I continued exploring peaks and trails in the Tonto NE of Cave Creek. Armed with FLYING_FLIVER's track we set out for a short out and back. We started at a point higher in elevation than the track on FR41 (N34 005.4 W111 53.749). There was parking and a forest road sign (I think is said 3193 but don't quote me on that). We hiked up the ridge and joined the track at the first "bump". We turned around at the COOK Triangulation Benchmark. There was not as much catclaw or cactus as on Rover or West Cedar, and there was not as much tall grass so we could see where we were putting our feet, but it was steeper which made for slow going for old me.

Since we were out this far and had time, Tom wanted to find another way to Professor Creek other than the Lime Creek Cabin Trail or Lime Creek from Horseshoe Lake. We explored using FR1059 from two different access points on FR24 in order to reach the vicinity of Grapevine Tank where we could hike down the valley. However that road was very rough so it would be faster hiking and it was unclear if it would shorten the distance compared to the other two choices. Also we didn't know what hiking down the valleys would be like. I guess we'll keep looking.

Endless Wind

The New River Mountains probably wouldn't get a shout-out in my favorite fifty hikes. In 2015, we hiked a twenty-mile loop out here that left me with a nagging desire to return. I'd mentioned it a few times over the years and I think it was purposely ignored in retrospect. It's crystal clear now. The terrain is loaded with catclaw. Not the kiddy cane whips, the briar-woven-looking bushes with thorns that resemble shark teeth.

Hike twenty miles out here in shorts, as Bruce did, and your desire to return is probably zero to null. Nobody hates pants more than me but they seriously work well in this terrain on cool days. While this stuff appears gnarly, you can walk around most and over the smaller specimens without getting caught up and shredded to hell. Only a scratch on my wrist drew blood on this day.

This catclaw/cow-patty loop hoping barbed wire fences will never be crowded with hikers. The wind beat me silly, ten miles was more than enough today. Despite the undesirables, I still find the ridgelines and distance views intriguing.

Bruce drove up Humbolt since we had plenty of time. Cool to see it up close, once anyhow, since it's visible from so many hikes. The paved road is a single lane with few passing opportunities but damn that road is smooth. A guy in a jeep we crossed paths with twice on our hike was at the top.

Had a slice of Piestewa heading home for a sanity check. Hope to hike 'em both again!

We started this one in a gale force drizzle and 40ish degrees. The rain lasted only a 1/2 hour to 45 minutes, but the gale force winds relented most of the day. It was not too bad when it was at our backs. I usually like to take my time and take in the views on top of peaks, but today it was snap a shot and find a wind break.

On top of Monument Mountain, you needed to create a wide base or risk being blown over.

Coming off Monument we found Fliver Frustrum #25 (again). It would be easy to walk past with the growth.

Working our way down Grapevine Mesa we kicked up some White Tails.

We took a break at the end of Grapevine mesa before dropping into Magazine Canyon.

For all the windy weather BS, ankle buster rocks and prickly pokey stuff, the views really are top notch. There appear to be many opportunities farther west with all the peaks in the New River Mountains. The highpoint of 5936 has been on my radar for some time.

After the hike we took the 4 mile drive to the top of Humboldt Mountain. It was 55 degrees when we left FR24 and a breezy 46 degrees at the top.

Driving in, still on the pavement portion of Seven Springs Road, there was a large lit up sign announcing FR41, was closed due to a washout (From the Sept 2014 storm). This was the road we were to access our hike from. In all actually, FR41 was closed at the intersection with FR37 (5.7 miles in). In talking to a guy on a BMW motorcycle, he made it another 3 miles past the closure, before he could no go any further. Talking to a couple of guys in an FJ, they had made it all the way in from I-17, but they said it would take an FJ to make it. (Sorry, Jeep, Chevy, Ford and Dodge owners)

We started our climb of Monument Mountain roughly following Fliver tracks. We got to the top as the morning light was getting real sweet. We located the Disc and set our sites on Frustum 25 a 1/4 mile away.

The 4 mile walk across Grapevine Mesa, was not the cake walk I'd hoped for. I played scratch the legs and kick the cactus all the way over. Dropping off the Mesa, we entered an area filled with uncharacteristic boulders and a sweet running Grapevine Creek. I think just about every wash we crossed on the day, had running water.

On FR37 for a bit, then FR603, and then the climb started once going off road. We made it up 1000' before stopping at Peak 5167. After discussion, we decided this would be our turn around point. Benchmark Mountain and Peak 5936 were not in the cards today.

From Peak 5167 :next: https://youtube.com ... dwd4

We decided to take a side trip on the way back to Upper Ranch, to check that area out. It does not appear to have been lived in for quite a few years. The flood waters from last year, have cut off the ability to drive up to the cabin anymore. This is where we ran into the two guys in the FJ, complete with their Metal Detector, Machete and sidearms.

From here it was all a road walk back to the truck, right as the sun was going down.

Ambitious plans for the day didn't come off as planned, but we made the most in a new area for both of us.

An opportunity to explore a rarely posted as hiked area surfaced. A sign warning of FR41 being closed on the drive in raised concern. Some may recall the late summer storms of 2014. Local HAZ Forum meteorologist CHUMS Halvorsen reported on Aug 19th 2014 New River at Table Mesa Rd flashed to almost 8000cfs. We were headed straight to the heartland where all that water accumulates. Later saw a sign stating FR41 closed until April 2015. In chats learned an FJ made it in from I-17 so it is doable. A BMW cycle guy from Canada said it looked to gnarly. Also commenting another two cycles and quads turned back too.

Turned out okay, our hike started before the closure. We headed up Monument Mountain in breaking morning sun. Standing on the side of a steep mountain with tall grass in the morning sun is about as good as life gets. Bruce giggled and danced around the FLIVER trinkets on Cook 4984.

Merged onto Grapevine Mesa where Bruce said we would follow FR600. The two tanks had water. FR 600 is long gone. We saw a trace of it in two spots. No grapevines on the namesake just the wrath of pristine ankle buster rocks, grass, cactus, catclaw and repeat for hundreds of miles. Okay maybe it was just under two. Anyhow Bruce wore his "I wanna look like raw processed sausage" shorts. Been there, done that so I tried my best to keep the jokes under ten per hour. In under two miles I lost count of the number of cactus he tripped over along the way. Sad and comical all rolled into one.

Next we headed for Benchmark Mountain. Planned as the beginning of an aggressive off trail assault. Settled on 5167 as the plan was looking more like a three day tour! Out in the middle of nowhere two-thirds up to Benchmark Mountain was a corral. Probably to hold the insane that attempt marathon off trail jaunts in this terrain. Here is the cool part. Earlier Bruce pointed out the Cardinals stadium ( Super Bowl 2015 ). Looking north I caught the snow capped top of Humphreys. The two combined from the same perch was the highlight of the day for myself.

With time to burn Bruce added in what is called Upper Ranch on topo. We could have walked there on a nice road but that's just not how we roll. Up and over another ridge. On route Bruce tacked a prickly pair. It looked painful so I tried to be kind for an hour.

Met FJ Nathan, his friend and Charlie the lab at Upper Ranch. The house/area is a mildly interesting gander. The area flooded pretty good so only smaller all terrain vehicles will make it all the way. Walked around nine miles back on roads to the truck.

Great to get out on a slightly challenging hike again. Great to see this area I've always wondered about. Looking it over afterwards shows some nice return opportunities.

I was all set to hike up and find a benchmark on Monument Mountain, north of Carefree, when a neighbor wanted to join me. I told him where and what I was doing and he requested to go.
Well, he may never hike with me again. :) He may never hike again, period. :) :)

It was cold, and the wind going up the mountain, was easily 40 to 45 mph in our face, and swirling. We literally had to balance ourselves against gusts that wanted to roll us back down the mountain. We couldn't hear each other without yelling. This fun "breeze" continued for over an hour, then it stopped completely. Go figure.

Monument Mountain is west of Seven Springs Rd (Rd 24) and just north of Road 41.
We hiked up in a northeasterly direction to the summit, to find COOK Triangulation Benchmark. The surveyors placed the disk there in 1924 and did not place any reference marks. We found a wooden staff placed above the benchmark, held in place by three wires which in turn were secured by huge boulders. I assume this wood staff was "re-installed" way after the 1924 surveyors initially put it there, but either way it made it easy to find the benchmark without the help of my GPS.

Now, for all you "frustum" lovers out there..........(frustums ??)
Monument Mountain is in Maricopa County, but barely. Yavapai County begins one quarter mile north of the Monument Mountain summit, and I decided to hike north to the county border to look for a county boundary monument. I had installed the county border on my GPS so all I had to do was go up and down that GPS line for my search. I had success.
I found, intact and in great shape, "Boundary Monument #25 for Maricopa and Yavapai Counties". It too was installed in 1924.

The monument is a two ft high frustum, with a pipe in the center of it, the pipe being driven into the ground for stability. The frustum (I just love that word ... frustum....frustum)
Anyway, the frustum is a concrete, three sided pyramid with a brass plate on each of the three sides. The three brass plates are in great shape, and display MARICOPA COUNTY 1924 on one, YAVAPAI COUNTY 1924 on another, with the third side stating the course and distance to the next numbered frustum to the west and to the east. Interestingly, (to me anyway), the distances stated on this last brass plate, to the next frustum monument west and east is only in feet, like in 36,131.0 Feet and 21,322.3 Feet. Doing the math, those "Feet" equate to 6.84 miles and 4.03 miles, respectively to the next frustums west and east.
The one to the east is Border Monument #26 and is right next to ROVER Triangulation benchmark, which I hiked up to three days ago. That county Monument (#26) is broken into many pieces and the brass plates are missing, probably by vandals. Knowing that, finding this boundary monument (#25) frustum intact was a bonus.

After many photos and wandering around the area, we hiked off the mountain knowing we had two successful finds. That evening I noticed my face was bright red and hurting. The next day, my last-minute hiking partner said his face was also bright red after the hike.
It turns out, we both had a solid case of wind-burn from that 40 to 45 mph wind we encountered on our climb up. Yikes !
