Last week, Greg sent me a picture of huckleberry ice cream scoops we could get at a store in Cave Creek. Obviously I replied, without hesitation. I decided to do a hike before I came. He asked up here?, I said, no, at Lookout. He kind of shamed me so I decided I'd do a quick hike up at the North Phoenix Sonoran Preserve.

There is 25MPH construction on the Sonoran Parkway due to a large housing complex going in :( on the south side of the road, so it takes a little longer to come and go. The TH lot was mostly empty as a chirping cactus wren greeted me. On the way in I noticed Mother Nature was up painting. My first pics were of the desert sky. I wasn't sure how I would do on this hike as I'm still practicing. It turns out I had a good day as I was able to get up Apache Vista in good order. Along the way I noticed a lot of the normal desert spring flora, though most was in its waning stage. The flora that most surprised me was the thinness of the Desert Trumpets which were numerous on the north side.

At the summit some butterflies joined me for a short while before I headed back down and around to the TH. For the most part, it looks pretty dry out here but, nonetheless, I love our desert for its sparks of flora growth here and there. I saw four lizards, a few quail, a hummer, a squirrel, a helicopter, two bike riders and 3 hikers.

And now to head up to Greg's (LosDosSloFolks) where we went and had lunch at Janey's and then huck ice cream at City Creamery. They didn't have the plain huck ice cream. However, I did enjoy the huckleberry honey lavendar ice cream AND they had a quart of the regular huck ice cream in their freezer. They get their berries from Montana. It was nice to visit with Greg and once he gets his back and knee back in order, hopefully it will still be cool enough to get in some little hiking.

Met up with my PA/AZ bestie Tricia for a short hike from Apache Wash Trailhead. We did a counter clockwise loop on Sidewinder, Apache Vista spur, Apache Wash Loop, and Ocotillo trail back to the parking lot. No shortage of other hikers and bikers out on the trails on this beautiful morning. So good to see Tricia getting back out on the trails again.

Early morning Thanksgiving hike at the Sonoran North Preserve. Now that I’m not working I don’t get to this area very often. Did one of the shorter, but nicer trails in the park. Went counterclockwise going up to the Vista Trail. Was treated to a beautiful sunrise. Was fortunate to have an owl perching on top of a cactus and be limned by the morning glow. After doing the Vista, I too the Apache Wash for a short distance to the connector for the Sidewinder Trail. It had been several days, but there was still water in the Apache Wash. Had to rock hop to cross. When I got to the Sidewinder, I took that back towards the TH. Activity was slow to begin with, but ended up encountering 1 biker, 3 runners and 10 hikers. Saw two olws all together. Very nice hike.

Wasn't motivated enough to drive any further, but had to take advantage of the perfect weather. A light crowd out, mixed MTB'ers and hikers. Some Fraleys to the west and northeast.

I needed to get out and stretch my legs after resting some nagging problems. This always fits the bill as a smooth easy workout hike. I did a double up Ridgeback, for a little extra gain. Cool to start, then the wind started gusting and blowing around the desert.

Had only planned on doing hike to Ridgeback Jct and not do Apache Vista but ended up doing the whole loop counterclockwise. I feel rather out of hiking shape and don't seem motivated. I'm so far behind on all my videos from Europe (researching takes so much time - however, those mountains in the La Rioja of Spain near the Camino look like some great hiking with cool geology). This ended up being a decent hike as I set my goals small and surpassed each one; a good way to start the year; or I'm trying to make up for my KFC 3 piece extra crispy chicken box , along with a high calorie day a couple days ago.

Trail is in good shape, but needs to have more rocks kicked off of it. Lots of people and pups out and bike riders too. Temp was glorious though and even a nice breeze depending on which direction you were hiking. Air quality seemed better too. I tried a dry mouth lozenge to help with my throat sticking to itself; seems to help.

On the way home I stopped for a Pumpkin Spice Latte Iced Coffee :) at Quik Trip as I forgot to pack a beer.

WATCH 5.65 miles, 1.44-3:39PM, 135 bpm/165 max burning 791 calories, 1750-2152 elevation.
Temp was a delightfully sunny 64.3 and only 13% humidity.

Nice workout loop that I haven't done in quite a while. Warm day...I should have started sooner or waited for cooler temps.

I bit off a bit more than I should have for this rehab hike. Best to have thrown in the towel after the first climb but I was determined to finish what I started. Lumbar fusion has shortened my stride by 8cm and I could really tell on the uphill sections. They say some of it will return by the 6 or 7 month mark.

The trails were all in good shape except for the ones that weren't and those really aggravated my incision. The massive back brace they gave me would have helped but I opted to go w/o it today. Poor decision.
OK, enough whining. I'm happy to get out, just impatient to get back to "normal". :y:
Saw 4 hikers and half a dozen mountain bikers.

It'd been more than 2 weeks since I'd done any sort of hiking. With some major lung funk going on, I hit this with a buddy, his kids, grand-kids. This worked out just fine with the length, AEG, speed and temps. Per usual, 2 to 1 MTB'ers to hikers. I'm ready to hit it again.

Just enough of a breeze to help cool you and to get the stinknet wafting through the air.

Brittlebush, Stinknet and Foxtail are the main players now. A few poppies, lupine, owl clover and scorpionweed are hanging on. A light crowd because of a late start.

Things are starting to dry out.

There are still patches of poppies, lupine, Dichelostemma capitatum, owl clover, desert chicory, scorpionweed and rock daisy.
In abundance are the brittle bush and stinknet.
The foxtails will be ripe and ready for sock collection soon.
The fiddleneck have played their last song for the year.

You couldn't ask for nicer weather.

Mission accomplished. Sad to say, the north owl hasn't seem to come back for the second year in a row. The south owl was in residence but I didn't see any young 'uns yet.

It was a nice day for the checkup. The temp was a little warm to start but when the sun went behind the clouds, it was just right. I thot I had walked by the intersection from Apache Wash so backtracked only to realize I hadn't walked by it. Part of the reason is I couldn't see my normal landmark, the tuner fork saguaruo which has passed away :lone: . On the Esplanade Trail, before arriving to where that saguaro normally stood I took a closer picture of the ground cover I couldn't ID last Sunday that I think is Woolly Plantain. I also grabbed some photos of some other flora including Owl Clover, Desert Hyacinth, Christmas Cholla and a few other different kinds of Cholla.

I did get buzzed as I headed northbound. Thankfully I didn't over react like I have a tendency to do. It was in the grass and I couldn't really see it. I passed by additional flora including Owl Clover which was the star of the day. The condo saguaro looks good and once again I missed the first owl (south) and realized it when I saw this one saguaro that is my landmark for the north owl. I had seen a few bike riders up to this point. I walked over to where her nest was and circled the saguaro. I saw no evidence of her. I noticed one of the saguaro arms had broken off so perhaps that nest is not usable anymore.

I headed back about 1/2 mile where the south owl was and I could first see her ears. I circled around and took her photo :) . The breeze had picked up when I hiked southbound so I truly enjoyed that. I tried to stay clear of the taller grass alongside the trail so I wouldn't get buzzed again. I didn't see any hikers on the Esplanade Trail. And now it was just a matter of getting back to the Trailhead and finishing off with a trip up Apache Vista. My legs were a little sore but that was mainly from my two workouts this week after being off ten days from being sick.

I made my way up the normally easy Sidewinder Trail which has Lupine and Scorpionweed on both sides. I remembered that Ambika said in order to get a decent picture of meadow-like flowers you need to zoom a little so I tried that. Sometimes successful, other times, not so much. The lighting needed to be filtered to get the ideal shot. As I topped out on Sidewinder on the east side I was serenaded by the coytoes again, just like last Sunday, so I stopped to listen and record.

At the intersection of Apache Vista Trail I sat on a rock for a few minutes before heading up. Not much in the way of flora on the way up other than miniature poppies and some lupine, but quite a few blooming Brittlebush.

The temperature continued to be lovely as I made my way back and along the Sidewinder Trail. Very little flora where last year there was so much. Glad I did all that filming last year and it's nice just to be able to hike this year. This time I felt my watch stop so I fired up my phone to continue tracking my hike. There was some photography going on as I got nearer the TH, including with horses. I noticed the stormy weather I had seen to the north was now getting closer and I'll be darned if it didn't start to sprinkle. In fact, it would rain on my way home.

I enjoyed my Huck It which I was really looking forward to for about two miles. I watched the weather and photographed some of it as I was leaving the TH lot.

WATCH 2:39PM start (watch died, phone said 5:27PM done) burned about 1200 calories. 1746-2094 elevation. 141bpm/176 max. Temp was 75.1 and 25% humidity with partly cloudy skies.

Went to check the wildflower situation in Sonoran Preserve North. It wasn't popping like the really good years in the past but still some good clusters along the trail. The loop is also a good mix of elevation, fast trail and two overlooks. Went to Apache Vista first and then looped around to finish with Ridgeback Overlook before hiking back to the trailhead.

Haven't been out here for a while. I decided on a clockwise loop. The TH lot was pretty full as were the trails, but that's to be expected on a Saturday morning. Needless to say, I felt like I was hiking a golf course. There are certain flat sections that could be fairways. I had a good hike up the mountain so I was glad of that. There were wildlfowers scattered throughout with only a few bunches here and there.

I actually passed a few hikers today :o . The temp seemed humid at first but there was a nice breeze most of the time. The overcast skies also helped. Getting closer to the TH there were lots more hikers and I did see a couple rabbits. Earlier I had seen a couple lizards and heard a couple cactus wrens. I saw a quail up in a tree doing his mating call.

I actually took a few movies today. I haven't made a video since August so I struggled a little putting it together. I'm still publishing videos from early last summer. Well at least this one is only 9 minutes and we get to hear music by @LosDosSloFolks [ youtube video ]
