An easy start to the year. With evening plans in place, the hike for the day needed to be such that I could get home and cleaned up to head back out. When J suggested we head north from 87 to check out this section of the AZT, I was happy to agree.

Temps were cool, but not as cold as they were when we did the bit of passage 21 southbound. Our feet got a bit damp as we headed through the dew covered plants on our way to the drainage before walking through the large culvert under 87. Was dismayed, but not surprised, to see a bunch of graffiti marking the walls.

Once we hit the trail northbound, we found the tread soft with the ground saturated from recent rains. The walking was sometimes a little slowed with sticky mud underfoot - while it accumulated somewhat on our shoes, it would also shed as we walked, flinging mud clods hither and yon. The miles heading up towards the Cross F TH cross lands used for grazing - and as such, there were plenty of gates and a number of cows encountered. Views got better the further north we went, heading closer to the Mazatzals.

As we approached the power lines (and the road), we were surprised to discover a small herd of horses clustered around some juniper trees. We continued onward to the Cross F trailhead junction before turning back to take a break where the trail crosses a creek. As we were sitting there, we discovered a game cam secured up in a tree and pointed right at our break spot.

After our snack break, we made our way back towards the trailhead. The horses had dispersed somewhat, with a number of them milling around the road crossing. We saw a lot more cows on the way back out vs what we spotted on the way in. The ravens also seemed to be out to play in the thermals, along with a lone hawk. There were a number of butterflies flying around, though they weren't proving cooperative for photography. It was great to be able to get out and get some relaxed miles in to start off the year.

Other people: A few vehicles at the Cross F TH along with one hunter heading up the hillside from the trail not far from the Cross F junction.

Pretty isolated wildflower activity, save for the storks bill which seems to be happily in bloom for pretty much the length of this hike right now.

Good sized pools in the drainage - didn't hunt for the actual spring due to overgrowth and the area looking like it would be boggy/muddy to explore.

S had some plans Sunday evening, so we were looking for something fairly close to the valley with not a ton of miles. Having hiked part of section 21 a couple of weeks back, we decided to continue NB and hike the Sunflower trail of passage 22. A chilly start as we made our way down to the creekbed and underneath 87. Tons of condensation on the ground from the recent rains, which led to the first 2.5 miles of the trail being pretty muddy, which turned our shoes into cement blocks. We made a stop at Rock Spring, not looking for the spring, but there was a good amount of water in the creek bed. Made the small climb up to the area where the power lines cut across, and was surprised to see a herd of roughly 10 horses under some juniper in the area. We continued to the Cross F TH junction, where we had a quick break in the creek before starting our hike back. On our hike back, the horses had now dispersed near the road crossing, with some walking up within a couple of feet of us (not sure if these are wild or they belong to someone). The rest of the hike back to Sunflower was uneventful as we made pretty good time, by our fairly low standards .

Besides the horses, a couple of small herds of bovine along the way, tons of ravens, and a red-tailed hawk. We came across a two-legged animal near the Cross F TH who was hunting, and that was it for the day. This trail had the most gates I've ever come across for a day hike, I think I counted 10 total of various sizes and types. Nice and easy hike for a Sunday.

Four of us did Sunflower trail as a shuttle hike. We left a vehicle on the old Beeline at Sunflower and drove around to Cross F ranch trailhead. We took Little Saddle Mtn trail to the AZT and then took that south back to Sunflower.
Only saw 3 hunters, all wanting to get a white tail buck. We saw a group of does just after we saw the hunters! But I think at least one of the hunters had already seen those.

Started from SR 87 parking (N-side road) and went to the underpass and brushed everything encroaching on the trail for the first half mile to the first gate.

Just after I started a single F-35 screamed by not very far above me! I grabbed my phone as I was expecting a second one to follow but no second jet :(

Saw a SOBO through hiker from Germany, she was disappointed about starting at the south rim and said she would have delayed to another year except her flight was non-refundable.

Started from Cross F Ranch Trailhead. Took the connector to the AZT and went south. Did some brushing at the creek crossing and then headed south to the tank. Cleared one deadfall on the way back.

When I started there were 9 APS / contractor trucks (Progressive something) some with trailers and ATVs at the trailhead. Apparently, inspecting the transmission line along FR 393.

On my way back I took FR393 back down to the trailhead and ran into 6 Maricopa Sheriff S&R trucks coming up FR 393 at the gate. I asked the last driver if they were doing a search for someone and he said no just on patrol!
I told him I would get the gate, he seemed happy about that!

Coming up on a full decade since our one-and-only hike onto Black Ridge it seemed like a good time for a return trip. While the goal on the previous trip was actually the high point on the far SW end of Black Ridge (Peak 5047), we weren't prepared for the longer hike with an extra 1K of AEG so we stuck close to the hike as described.

(Oh yeah... Tracey was NOT about to sign on for the extra 3 miles of OFF-trail stuff it would take, due more likely to having been chased some distance by a huge gopher snake when we were on the push to the summit)

Ok, back to today...
Inventory at the TH:
Two vehicles & one fresh plastic bag of doggy-do within 10 feet of the TH gate. MAYBE they will take it home when they return??

Whatever, w began from the 'new' McFarland TH taking a left at the Sunflower/Little Saddle/AZT intersection, following it South until reaching the waypoint I had for the old ranchers trail, yup, from 10 years ago. And while there was a small haphazard cairn of sorts, there really wasn't any trail to be found. Eventually we just set off in the general direction of where it should be, but it would be more than 1/8 mile before we began to see an indication of 'something' passing this way, which was a faint crushing of grass. Only when we hit the first elevation gain did there appear to be an actual trail of sorts. I say 'of sorts' because for a significant portion of the hike to Brunson Tank the trail would fade, split or simply disappear, leaving us with a few times when we each went off to the side until one of us located what appeared to be 'the trail'.

On the last climb to Brunson Tank it appeared there were numerous well-traveled trails (at least by cattle) which left us wondering which to follow. By the end of the climb we had traversed parts of three separate trails, only one at any time seemed better than the others.

Finally, with Brunson Tank in sight we both came to the same downcast what a sight! conclusion. Unlike 10 years ago when it was a literal lake, this time Brunson was dry. A bit of roughed up dirt in the center, but none of it exhibited any moisture, and the rest was bone dry.

As we approached from the East we encountered found the remains of a fabric & folding-pole tent(?) at the edge of the tank. It was so decrepit it took us a moment to realize it was a hunting blind. Yup, right at the edge of the tank. ](*,)

While it was a little ahead of time for lunch, we found a few of the largest rocks on the West edge of the tank and took break. Good thing I ate most of my lunch as the next part would burn much more energy than expected for the 'downhill' portion of the hike.

Having read triplogs from the past few years I didn't expect the route down toward Upper Sheep Creek Spring to be that hard to follow. Similar to earlier in the hike, as soon as we hit a well-traveled cow path, it would split and/or disappear through thick/low brush necessitating more than a little thrashing through brush before locating another part of the trail.

Unfortunately, it appeared even the cows weren't sticking to the easiest route down. Even with a track to follow, there were times we were well off to one side or the other. Eventually we hit the 'bottom' and a bit of serendipity struck... since we had taken a side-trip off the AZT last year to locate Upper Sheep Creek Spring, things were familiar enough I no longer sought to follow the official Black Ridge Loop route. The few times I checked to see how close the routes were, I liked our route deviations better. For the last part of our climb to reach the AZT we purposely stayed away from the official route, and following the route we took last year was almost a breeze.

Once on the AZT for the return leg, with no need for route-finding I pretty much went into self-driving mode... my legs knew what to do so I let them do whatever they wished. There were a few trickles of water here and there but not enough to dampen more than the bottom of our footgear.
We both noticed a tree we had to step over last year that had been cut recently, so along with the fresh erosion control we were appreciative of the trail maintenance.

The only downer of sorts was the bag of doggy-do... It was STILL THERE!
Both vehicles which there before were gone. I guess nobody wants to drive their doggy-do 50 miles back home when they could just leave it??
Why didn't they just kick the doggy-do off to the side of the trail, next to the coyote scat and nobody would be the wiser?
Can't get no respect anymore.

A group of us came in on the connector trail from Cross F TH. Just above the junction with the AZT there was a steep, rocky and veed slope. We built steps using large rocks and tree logs to improve the tread. After the tread work we brushed trail south to FR 393.
