About 1000 feet below the summit of 5024 sits a prominent, south-facing outcropping that I've heard called the "Nub," at the head of Monument Canyon.

I started out the day with the more modest objectives of scrambling up Monument Canyon to check out the mine shaft and the airplane wreckage. The mine is pretty shallow/short, but worth a quick side jaunt. When I got to the turn up spot for continuing the up-and-over plane wreckage hunt, the canyon drainage looked clear and the Nub began calling my name. I answered.

Unfortunately, the clear drainage section (which would be fun to see when some good water is draining through the cascades) peters out and becomes choked again with various poky desert growth, so I popped out on a flank and followed it very steeply up intermittent talus slopes to the base of the Nub, on some semi-defined bighorn trails.

At the Nub, I did a little scrambling and made it most of the way to the top, but the final pitch would require more exposure than I was willing to risk whiled soloing and without ropes. Great views from that area, including the ability to look far down below and see the glint of the wreckage at the impact site and apex of the two drainages it straddles. Evidence that the bighorns enjoy this view relatively regularly.

Hitting the Nub also brings into view the neighboring Canyon West of Hog with the Ridgeline and 5057 on display.

Just north of the nub are a couple of striking spires (the "monuments" of Monument Canyon?), including a strong contender for the best hoo hoo poker hoodoo in the supes  Truly unmistakable.

Anyhoo, after enjoying the views and a break for some lunch, the real work of descending began. Honestly, if there was a better option for just continuing up and descending on a reasonably near legitimate trail, I definitely would have done it.

I made good use of my poles in sections, combined with some downclimb scrambling and butt-scooting some loose talus sections here and there.

Back in the drainage, I made the turn up on the wreckage path up to the impact site. It is truly amazing how spread out this wreckage is over the divide and the two drainages on either side. FWIW, I marked most of the places where wreckage is located.

Once back to the remains of the miner's cabin (aka the fireplace), I was happy to reconnect with an actual trail. Though I think that trail from the Broadway trailhead is one of the rockiest in the
Supes. The beautiful saguaro forest in this area though, along with the nice, broadside view of the ridgeline makes up for it.

Lots of bushwhacking on this route, and the bushes definitely whack back--so don't wear your favorite hiking clothes.

Second crosscut trail in 2 days. Started from the Broadway TH in the dark and first headed up Monument Canyon since I had never been there before. I only went as far as the trails go, which wasn’t far. I wasn’t in the mood to hike in the wash and deal with the overgrowth and rocky terrain, so I headed back to Jacob’s Trail and hiked north. Got to the canyon south of Siphon Draw and turned around.

On my way back I ran into a guy from India who had started from the Broadway TH and wanted to know how far it was to the trail to the Flatiron. I told him he had at least another mile to that junction and then had the whole ascent after that. He mentioned that he wanted to be done by noon and since it was past 9:30am I told him that likely wasn’t going to happen from Broadway TH. We talked for a bit and he had several questions about where to hike and that he’s only been here 2 years. I directed him to HikeArizona.com and gave advice to his more immediate questions. He ended up hiking back to the TH with me and we talked about the trails around Phoenix and what might good hikes for kids, as he has 2 younger ones. Seemed like a nice guy, I recommended that he post hikes and use the website as a resource as necessary.

Weather was chilly in the dark and then got warm quickly once the sun hit. Most trail traffic was between the TH and the junction to Broadway Cave, which looked like the popular spot that day.

Not sure what to call this one, as an old friend just wanted to show me this small canyon, which he referred to as "Inspiration Canyon". (Upon further research, looks like it's Monument Canyon) We launched from the Broadway trailhead and the entire trek was probably only 4 miles roundtrip. Short excursion but great company.

Went out this afternoon, just to see how far my feet would carry me up this canyon. Turns out, farther than I expected. Ascending was easy as always, except for a couple of spots where I lost the route and ended up in the weeds. I ended up exploring up the south branch of the canyon, as it looked more inviting. I had forgotten about the airplane wreckage, so that was an interesting to encounter. I wanted to push on as the route ahead didn't look too touch, but I checked my watch. Oops, 4 p.m. :o Headed back down and texted my wife to throw some potatoes in the oven. Next time, I'll try to get into the wash bottom sooner; I'll take boulders over scraping through jojoba any day.

Followed FLYING_FLIVERs route up Monument Canyon to the T-6D Trainer wreckage with the exception that we went down the scree chute from the impact site. I hate scree. Wear long pants as the catclaw and jumping Cholla are intense. Saw a herd of 12 big horn sheep in the upper canyon - so cool!!
Respect the site. Remember the lives.

quite a number of years back, randy and i took a really long time to travel the apache trail - stopping at every wide spot in the road to take pictures of flowers. when bobby suggested roosevelt lake as our camping spot this weekend, i knew that this would be awesome. bobby doesn't stop at every wide spot in the road, though. instead, only vista points with parking lots. still, a great road trip. and we even hiked up to the tonto national monument on sunday, so there was a little hiking involved.

Rumors of a skull chipped in the rock way up Flatiron Canyon lured me in to trying this loop. The hike up Monument Canyon was routine passing the chimney, the mine and the T-6 Texan wreckage along the way. I dropped into Flatiron Canyon a few miles up and started the scramble down. A few dry falls had me wondering but they ended up being easy down climbs so no trouble. I looked for petroglyphs or the skull but didn't find either.
I also heard stories of catclaw in the canyon and I missed that as well. The boulder hopping was a good work out and I was glad to get down to the open desert again. It was interesting to see Christmas Cholla over and over again as I took an off trail roue back to the trail. There were no other hikers on or off trail all day.

I was given a copy of Senner's Gold so the quest to find Senner's Grave was on. The book calls the unnamed canyon between Hog Cyn and Monument Cyn "Flatiron" Cyn and that was the first goal. The best way in seems to be from Monument Cyn so that was the route. Once you exit the canyon the overland route is steep and loose so looking for somewhat level terrain is a task. After scrambling up to the cliff ledge there were 5 alcoves to check. One had what may be on old grave but it was hard to tell. There was a prospect hole near this spot and honey combs high above. The ledge had a lot of big horn (?) droppings and I founs an X in the rock. The next goal was a scramble up to the ridgeline and a hike over to the lone cypress tree on a ridge to the east. After the detour, I hiked over to the Flatiron and down Siphon Draw. Siphon draw was busy as usual and i was glad to get down to the Crosscut trail and away from the crowd. Three mule deer jump up on the Crosscut trail and were patient enough for photos. This route is not recommended unless you like off trail.

Mentally and physically, this was yet another f*@#$g epic bushwhack adventure; but the fun factor on this one was in a class of its own! This was a Peter Medal led TLC hike [bushwhack] that he cross-posted on HAZ. Given the difficulty factor, the turnout was very decent, with 10 of us in all. In addition to organizing some pretty amazing off-trail adventures, Peter does a superb job at leading them. The no handing-holding, no drama, and no B.S. on his hikes really make for a pleasant time. I actually enjoyed myself more in the company of other people vs. bushwhacking solo which is not often the case!

We kicked things off from the Mining Camp Restaurant. The plan was to head over to Monument Canyon, hit up the wreckage site, and then get up to the Ridgeline Trail via one of a few options that Peter had lined up. From there we’d pay a visit to Flat Iron and then head down Siphon Draw back over to Mining Camp.

With a 6 AM start time, the first 45 minutes or so were almost pitch dark. Even my pricy headlamp wasn’t enough to compensate for my inability to safely go at a decent pace in the dark. After several minor trips early on, [and one major one where over an inch of my hiking pole sparked up as I threw almost all my body weight into it to prevent from tumbling heard over heels], I managed to yell to the group NOT to wait for me while they were still in earshot. I guess it was time to pull my classic ‘hypotenuse vs. sides’ / ‘as the crow flies’ kind of deal. While the group had gravitated closer to the road, I stayed closer to the base of the mountain, heading at a diagonally toward Monument Canyon. It worked out perfectly; I had just enough time to pause for a few pics and peak into a mine before rejoining with them toward the beginning of the canyon.

We then headed up the rightmost drainage, [since that’s the one with most of the wreckage according to previous HAZ reports], en route to the impact site. Aside from some catclaw in the beginning, the going very easy and fun and the surrounding area was beautiful. This would definitely make my top 10 list of awesome drainages! As for the wreckage, it was really amazing to see just how much was still left. It seemed like there were pieces almost every step of the way once we reached a certain point. The impact site was awesome and definitely the focal point of the wreckage.

Next I opted for the more scenic option en route to the Ridgeline: heading to the saddle-like area between the nub (4102’) and 4648’. We noticed a ‘shelf’ that appeared to lead around 4648’ and over to the drainage that MtnBart01 used in Aug 2012 to reach the Ridgeline Trail from Monument Canyon. It was good to know the drainage had been ‘HAZ’ed’… our shelf to drainage route would put a fun twist on things, if successful. Reaching the shelf proved to be a fun, 30-60 second scramble; and once on it, we noticed a definite route that seemed too well beaten in to have been from animals alone.

The shelf was awesome, and I wish more in the group could have experienced it; but trust me when I say, it’s not for the faint of heart. Even with a fear of heights, it’s not often that Peter turns back, and he did just that due to a short section in the beginning. I thought this section was fun… but even Michael and Mike [the only others who opted for the shelf route and who can boulder hop as good if not better than me] hesitated at this section. The worst part for me was negotiating a drop toward the end, right around where the shelf joins the drainage that leads to the Ridgeline Trail. Let’s just say, even after handing Mike my hiking poles AND pack, this one drop took the best of my bouldering skills to overcome… and even then, it was super dicey. The last time I felt this challenged while bouldering was in Dec. 2014 while coming off a ledge on the brutal bushwhack to Devil’s Cashbox. Enough said!

When we connected with the drainage, it didn’t take much longer to reach the Ridgeline trail. There were many good gripping rocks in this drainage but several varieties of cactus to work around, making the going a bit slower; nothing terrible though. Upon reaching the Ridgeline Trail, we took a well deserved 20-30 minute break to rest our legs and soak in the scenery and then headed to Flat Iron. Mike pointed out another wreckage site on the Siphon Draw side, and after that we took another good rest on the side that overlooks Monument Canyon. It was pretty awesome to look down on the terrain we had bushwhacked earlier that day.

Kind of beat by that point, I was ready to head back, but Michael and Mike wanted to bag 5024’ first. Of course, I was not going to object; and I’m really glad we did it! Bagging this peak was like a fun little cool-down: tons of well-beaten in routes and tons of fun boulder hopping. To top things off, the views were some of the best of the entire adventure. Upon reaching the summit, I noticed two small dog collar tags, each in it’s own little bag that someone had left. The backs were engraved with, “I Conquered Peak 5024”. After Peak 5024’, we stopped by the two plane crash memorial sites on the Siphon Draw side before heading back down to the Mining Camp Restaurant. A few others including Peter had arrived back right around the same time. It was pretty fun exchanging stories and comparing GPS routes over dinner.

6:10 am launch from Mining Camp Restaurant....10 of us from the TLC Hiking Group.....head lamps on, we made a straight line to Monument canyon. Up and down, and up and down, and up and down... 2.5 miles to the mouth of the canyon, exactly as planned and measured from Google Earth. The lower portion of the canyon is all cairned along with pink flags until you get to the fork. The wreckage site sits on the upper portion of said inner ridgeline...thats the goal. Said ridge is a complete Cholla forest. We decided to take the right drainage. Almost immediately you start stumbling onto the wreckage in the heavy brush of the drainage. The dog very much appreciated the full pools of standing water. Once near the elevation, we got out of the drainage and ventured west and up to the crash site, again more and more wreckage. From here we pressed up and onto a large flat terrace and took a break. Gameplan was to hit the nub (on the topo 4102'), then circle back to the "crack" and on up to Ridgeline and down Siphon Draw. Optioned to the slower peeps to scrub the nub and make way for the crack and regroup on Ridgeline, six took heed. Four us hit the nub, amazing views on this ridgeline separating Monument Canyon and its east sister. From here we say a terrace that once on, should lead us over to the top of the crack. Some baby climbs here and there to get onto the upper terrace and once on seemed somewhat trailish. There were a couple of thin ledges that had to be navigated. My fear of heights pressed me back...told Amy, Mike and Michael to press on and the dog and I would circle back around to the crack.

Coming back down from the nub the other six were slowly coming back onto the upper flat of the middle ridgeline. Crack failure. They were not able to get up. So 7 of us took the east drainage down the canyon with a pit stop at the mine.

One of our team got a tick on his neck. Saw one deer. No snakes. Beautiful day. Great team. Future backpack consideration the Monument Canyon East ridgeline traverse.

dry Monument Canyon Dry Dry
various pools on the upper east drainage. Drinkable.

First sighting of big horn sheep in the Superstitions :y:

I was on call till 8:30 AM so we had a later than normal start. Once we hit the split in the canyon we hiked up the west ravine, then up to the crash site, had lunch, then worked our way down to the east ravine, and out, checking out the many metal findings along the way. Some areas in the ravines were really choked up with heavy vegetation so travel was slow. Although I wasn't feeling 100% I really enjoyed this close-in hike.

Went up to the mine, then went to find the airplane crash, using wallyfrack's route as a guide. I climbed up the ridge from the boulder field until I saw some shiny metal. At that point, I was getting close to my turn around time, so I just went down the North side, checking out the twisted pieces of aluminum on the way down. Will have to check out the South side later,
