Early morning run in the McDowells. Didn’t get there quite as early as I would have wanted, but was treated to a beautiful sunrise on the drive. Also, saw a Javelina crossing the road near the Rio Verde community. Got on the trail just before sunrise around 5:40. Did a lasso. In on the Wagner, then CCW on the Granite then Bluff and then Granite again to close the loop. This is the best way to go because it allows you to enjoy the Bluff trail on the decline and the distant views that come with it. Temps were nice for the morning. Not much activity on the trails, though I did see quite a few cars at the various THs. Encountered one biker on the Wagner and that was it. Minimal wildlife…quail, lizards and a lone rabbit

Nice day for this hike. MMRP was full this morning with bikers but they were not in the western end of the park. Did the full loop, not the lasso loop.

I did a version of this loop without the Bluff Trail. At the north part of the Pemberton Trail I saw some horse trails that aren't on any maps. I hiked one short spur of one to note it on my track. I may go back one day to hike those trails to see where they go. I took the Granite adn Delsie Trails out to the Pemberton Trail, then after the Lariat Trail, I took the Wagner and Tortoise Trails back to the lot.

the clear skies made for the best pictures at sunrise with some light cloud cover and the early light hitting the McDowells. After that the clouds rolled in, which made for drab lighting, but for comfortable weather to hike in. Missed the rain by a few minutes and was hit by light rain on the drive home. Still had plenty of time to spare from the bigger storms that hit later in the afternoon.

On Sunday afternoon, I hiked Wagner, Granite, Bluff, and then back on Granite and Wagner. Nick told me that the flowers were thick along the Granite Trail near the wash. He was right.

I saw lots of mountain bikers, but only a few other hikers while I was out.

Mike, Ben, Marilyn, Kay, Diane, and Marilyn joined me for a twelve mile hike in McDowell Mountain Regional Park and nearby McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

We hiked: Wagner, Granite, Delsie, Gooseneck, Rock Knob, Pemberton, Bluff Tr Wash, Granite, Bluff, Granite, and back on Wagner.

We saw a lot of mountain bikes out in the morning - more than usual for a Friday. There was a group at Jackass Junction (near Granite Tank) that was working on fixing a flat. There's now a bike repair station there, complete with tubes in a mailbox. It works on the honor system - you take what you need and bring back supplies when you next ride by.

Anyway... all of these trails were in great shape. The desert was incredibly green w/ lots of flowering plants too.

MMRP loop: checked out 2 new to me trails :)

This place is way busier than the Mazatzals :-k
62 bikers, 4 hikers. Of those, 37 bikers and 3 hikers were on the 2.4 mile Pemberton section, so only 25 bikers and 1 hiker the rest of the time

This loop is in one of the 100 hikes books. I added some mileage by doing some out and back sections on Granite and Bluff to complete all three trails.
I arrived at the park a little before 7:00 am. It opens at 6:00 am this time of year but there was no one in the booth. They have a self pay station. Six bucks for cars and I think two bucks for walk ins. The booth was still empty when I left. It is a week day though.
I hit the trail around 7:00 am and the weather was great. It turned out to be overcast all day. I got sprinkled on a minute or two but the heavier rain stayed north. These trails are in great shape and seem to be great for Mtn. bikers.
There is a lot of vegetation but with all the yellow grass it has that barren feel to it. Not a lot of big trees or Saguaros. There are lots of smaller Palo Verde trees and smaller cacti. The Jojoba steal the show with some pretty tall Cresote too. The Brittlebush hold their own but being dried up you don't notice them. There are some great views of the surrounding mountain ranges. With Weaver's Needle, Four peaks, and Red Mountain being the highlights. This hike may not be fun on a hot day with no shade. Today was nice though. With some nice views, great weather and the smell of petrichor it made for a nice morning hike. :)
