Slow trail run but technically still running. Ran a new trail called Scenic Trail which had a good long hill followed by a ridgeline back to Pemberton Trail. Then ran over to Chuparosa Trail and the North Trail Loop before heading back to Pemberton Trailhead. Nice butterfly loop for a change...definitely will do the Scenic Trail again!

A new section of the Verde Trail was added to MMRP, so with pretty much all the forests closed, this looked the time to do this.

Started from the main staging area and headed north on the Pemberton Trail, then turned right onto the Verde Trail, which now goes all the way out to and intersects with the Pemberton Trail. Then I took the Verde Trail to its end and turned around. On the way back I took what is now a spur trail (which used to be part of the Verde Trail) to the North Trail and hiked the north half of that loop and the Chuparosa Trail back to the Pemberton and back to the car. Before the North Trail, I saw a hiker coming the other way who warned me of a rattlesnake he saw in a bush that buzzed at him and scared him. He also mentioned it was the first one he ever saw and just moved to AZ a year ago. We talked for a bit and headed on our ways.

Most of the hikers and bikers I saw were very early, beating the heat. Did see one biker who finished right after I did. The weather wasn't too hot for me. The early start and being a little bit higher in elevation seems to have helped a bit. Saw some smoke from a fire in Fountain Hills towards the end of the hike. Looks like it might have been up near the Eagles Nest area.

Another night hike in the McDowell Mountain Regional Park. Decided to hit the north of the park. Wanted to do the Verde and North Trails. Also noticed that HAZ didn't have a GPS trail for Lousley Hill Loop, so I figured I would pop over and get that. Nursery Tank Trail is right in the area so I figured I would see if there was anything to see there (Doubtful, given the time of year)

Verde Trailhead Parking - To get to the park you have to go into a gated community when you turn onto North Tonto Verde Drive road (off of North Fort McDowell Road). Gate was closed when I got there(sometime after 9:30pm). I drove around to see if there was another access point to the road, and there doesn't seem to be one. Luckily, when I drove past the entrance the second time, someone was entering, so I tailgated them and got past the gate. Not sure if the gate is closed during the day, but something to think about. I'm thinking this community thinks this trailhead if just for them. If you can get in, the gate will open automatically going out, so you don't have to worry about getting trapped.

Anyhow got to the trailhead at 10:11pm, temp was a toasty 96 degrees, dropped the fee in the self-pay box and started on the hike.

The planned hike is as detailed below, making for a 8.6 mile hike with 1 mile on the road, and 0.4 miles in a wash to get to all of the trails.

Although it was a "Warm" night, the hike went pretty much without issue, Didn't see anything at Nursery Tank. Got back to the trailhead at 1:18am and headed out.

01. Verde Trail (Heading South) 1.2
02. Northern Loop (West Site) 1.9

09. Lousley Drive South Road 0.1

Pleasant stroll through the desert with the family. Tacked on the Chuparosa trail as well. Some nice cloud action. Heard a coyote yipping pretty close at one point.

Long trail run loop around Pemberton. I added a couple of extra trails the Lariat and Chuparosa. Really liked the Chuparosa trail which is about 4 mile loop back to Pemberton. Awesome temps and never felt warm even at 2pm finish.

I did it, I made it to 2,500 miles for 2019! My legs were definitely feeling it these past two weeks as I have been averaging almost 10 miles per day in December. Not sure why I was aiming for that number, just sounded like something fun to do to end the year.

MMRP was hosting the Dawn-to-Dusk bike race, so my wife and I drove to the North Trail trailhead at the far end of the park. We did a somewhat convoluted route incorporating the North Trail, Chuparosa, Pemberton, and part of the Verde Trail too.

It had been a while since I last hiked these trails. I was surprised at how green it was. Also, this part of the park is more heavily vegetated since it wasn't hit by the Rio Fire of '95.

All of the trails in this area were in good condition.

We saw a bunch of bikes while we were on the Pemberton. We were able to make a sort of loop in that section by hiking a service road and the 168th St access spur. After observing the direction of bike travel on the way in, I chose a path which would have us walking against bike traffic (which made it easier for us to see them and get out of the way).

On the way back, we hiked part of the Verde Trail and sat on Nick and Jen Morigi's bench for a few minutes. This bench provides a nice late day view of the setting sun reflecting off of Four Peaks.

Just a Sunday afternoon stroll in McDowell Mountain Regional Park...

My wife and I hiked the North Trail in the CCW direction, then took Chuparosa to Pemberton at which point we turned around and then finished the loop on the North Trail.

We saw some sort of scout troop hiking in the other direction. We saw other hikers and several mountain bikers too.

I didn't realize it was this trail and not North mountain until Joe brought it to my attention. This is the one in my Boots and Burgers book. It's summer time so I went to early to do the burger too. This is a 3 mile nature trail. It even has signs of tree names. It's flat and sandy. Ok for bikes. I saw a road bike :o riding it! would be good for kids or out of town visitors. It has some good views of the mountain ranges in the area. It felt warmer today then yesterday and I started 2 hours earlier. :)

To make a short story long.....my wife and I are doing a mini "staycation" at a nearby resort. One of the things they asked us when we got there was "what do you like to do?" Of course, I said HIKING. The concierge pulls out a 2 page packet with several hikes listed. It had some of the popular ones that you would expect....Camelback, Piestewa Peak and then .....the North Trail???. How in the world does the North Trail rank to make this list? I decided to find out. This is one of many trails in the McDowell Mountain Regional Park located on the east side of the McDowell Mountains. I've been to this park several times, but I've never visited this side of it. The North Trail is isolated in the the northeastern part of the park and does a self contained loop. It is one of the longest (about 3 miles) interpretive nature walks that I've seen in the Maricopa Park System. About .1 miles in from the TH there is a spot where I picked a pamphlet that goes along with the numbered signs that I encountered upon the trail. Typically I am not a huge fan of interpretive trails. But this one was kind of nice. The numbered signs were more than just labels of what I was looking at but provided just a little bit of trivia to go with. And even though most of the numbered locations were about foliage, there was a sprinkling of other topics as well. The trail is very smooth (ideal for running) with a gradual change in elevation (about 150 ft). They really "baby" the hiker, providing stairs at one of the washes and a bridge at another. Neither of which were necessary, but were kind of a novelty because they were there. The foliage was nice and the distant views of the Four Peaks with snow tantalizing. Encountered four hikers and a ranger heading in as I was heading out. Sounded as though they were getting a guided trail tour. Saw quail, crows and rabbits.
