8-1-2022 written 12-5-2022 Fellow glacierchatter Bill, and Nina stopped by and picked me up around 8 so we could go have breakfast at Two Dog Flats Restaurant before heading out for our hike. We decided to drive up to Sun Point Trailhead and hope to find a place to park, which turned out not to be a problem. It was VERY, VERY windy (25 MPH with gusts up to 39 and we got blasted with all that). The hike, which is normally somewhat protected by trees, is no longer that so the wind was particularly brutal.

We headed on down the trail enjoying the instant views and turquoise colored rough water. We checked out some of the wildflowers, altho they were limited. We would encounter hikers off and on all the way until the hoard at St Mary Falls. When we got out a little in the open it was quite a fight with the wind. St Mary Lake can be notorious for its winds that seem to come from Logan Pass down into the Valley. Nonetheless, the views are spectacular, especially with all the mountains around you. And now because of the effect of the 2015 Reynolds Creek fire (probably human caused) that included 500 hazard trees that were removed during that time, you get a real good visual of Goat Mountain.

The fire burned 4800 acres along the Going to the Sun Road and into the St Mary Falls area :( . (FYI also The 18,840-acre Thompson fire was the park’s largest in 2015, when 2 percent of the park burned.) We stopped at Baring Falls for just a short time. The feeling here is definitely a lot different without the tree cover; however, it's still a pretty little Falls and lots of people were enjoying playing in and around it and in the creek of the same name.

We stopped to watch a chipmunk eat its find on the top of a rock, made for some good pictures and movie as the background was pretty awesome :) . As we neared some of the junctions with other trails that will take you to St Mary and Virginia Falls, the people traffic picked up even more. This area is also where you used to have complete cover from the trees that are now totally exposed.... just a little hard to get used to that "naked" feeling. We spent a short time at St Mary Falls before proceeding to Virginia Falls. In a short way from the river, the tree cover appears for the rest of the hike and the elevation starts.

You come pretty quickly to Lower Virginia Falls which is always worth a quick look-see before proceeding up to the main Virginia Falls. Two things: the wind was blowing so it was hard to shoot any pictures or movies because of the spray. Second, there must have been some sort of obstruction in the river above as the normal veil like falls had a split so it wasn't nearly as beautiful as normal.

We didn't stay long before heading down to the bridge that crosses the creek to get a view up toward Virginia Falls high above you. This area has such pretty rocks including in the creek. We ended up waiting a while for Nina and when she didn't show up, I made my way back up the trail where I found her sitting near the trail at Virginia Falls. On our way back to St Mary Falls we encountered a somewhat strange couple and their dog. And come to find out, the gal had injured her knee so Nina played nurse maid. Just before the St Mary Falls, we stopped and watched people jumping from the big rock platforms into the bottom of the Falls :o . I took pictures and videos. I don't recall ever seeing that before. I don't know what the Park Service thinks of that in regard to liability. It does look like fun and if I had known, I might have given it a shot.

We crossed the bridge and made our way through the crowds of people coming to the Falls. I have never seen so many people, and they kept coming. We started to get a little cloud cover on our way back which was nice. And even though the trees were all burned, some are exposing that white bark so it was somewhat picturesque. We stopped again at Baring Falls where my birder companions noticed a few Waxwing birds. Fortunately, I did get some decent pictures. They are very pretty birds. I also saw a fat squirrel scurry off and got a picture of its backend. There was also some nice flora in the area and as usual, quite a few people enjoying being around the Falls. On our way back to Sun Point, we stopped and visited with a ranger for a few moments before getting back to the TH. She was new to Glacier Park and said she's been keeping pretty busy.

We went back to the KOA and changed before going to Frog's Cantina in St Mary for dinner in an outdoor setting with live music. It was pretty nice; I had not eaten there before but they did have Indian Fry Bread taco which was delish! My Huckleberry Margarita, while large, needed more tequila. Later that evening at the KOA I got treated to a lovely crescent moon evening. Tomorrow, I would meet up with Tina and Sharon over at Many Glacier.

On our second day at Glacier we wanted to hike around Saint Mary Lake. The Going to the sun Road was closed at the Rising Sun Motor Inn so we had to walk along the road to the Trail head for St Mary Falls. Very Scenic walk along the road especially since there were no cars on it. As a side note you have to go on line to get reservations to drive on the Going To The Sun Road (check to park website). Once at the St Mary Trail Head we went to St Mary Falls and Virginia Falls.

The walk along the road was quite nice Saw lots of wild life including a grizzly just 50 yards away, It was content rooting around in the brush looking for something to eat, did not seem to be interested in us thankfully. Took lots of photos. Other wildlife included Goats and big horn sheep a ways up the side of the hills. On our trip in along the road we stopped off at Sunrift Gorge about 100 yards off the road. Worth the side trip. With no cars on the road you don't have to worry about weather you will get a parking spot to visit this gorge.

St Mary Falls was running quite high. I am still amazed at how much water flows in these creeks/rivers. From St Mary Falls we headed up to Virginia Falls, Really impressive. On our return trip from the falls we followed a trail along Lake Mary to Sunrift Gorge again then to Baring Falls and continued on the trail to Going to the Sun Point where we took the road back to our start point.

At First I was disappointed that we couldn't drive to St Mary Falls Trail Head especially since we went on line and got a pass, It would add 8 miles of road walking. When we were done with the hike though I was actually glad it was closed and the added 8 miles was actually quite eventful. On our trip back to where we stayed the week at Swift Current Lodge we were able to see more grizzly's, moose and black bears.

Glacier Day 3

This was the "big event" of the day. We started off with the boat tour of St. Mary Lake. Tickets were a little overpriced IMO, but the boat tour gave us a nice opportunity to get off our feet for a bit and still see some cool stuff. The boat captains shared interesting facts about the geology of the area--including that Wild Goose Island is a tall spire of Alston Limestone that withstood glacial grinding and is just tall enough to poke out of the top of the lake--as well as on info flora and fauna (including that moose are apparently good swimmers and can dive up to 18 feet underwater).

The boat tour heads up to the western side of the lake where it docks, and allows those on the short tour to walk the 0.2 mi. up the trail to Baring Falls, while those with more time can hike over to St. Mary and Virginia Falls. We did the latter (and also did a quick jaunt on the way back to Baring Falls).

The first part of the trail goes through a burn area from the 2015 Reynolds Creek fire. The undergrowth is recovering nicely, but the trees are going to take awhile. In the meantime, as the trail climbs up from the lake, the views of the western end of the lake are also a nice distraction from the burn scar.

Once we rounded the corner at the end of the lake, we passed the burn scar and were back in the verdant valley. Shortly, we came to St. Mary Falls, where NPS has constructed a bridge just down from the falls, creating a nice viewing platform.

This is a popular area, and many people were there. And for good reason. The falls are impressive! And the clear water is great eye candy. A few people were cliff jumping off the rocks near the bridge. I might have partaken in other circumstances, but we were in a time crunch--wanting to get out to Virginia Falls as well and back to the boat dock before our departure time.

So, we took in the views briefly and then continued on up the trail. The traffic lessened slightly, but was still relatively busy. In another mile or so, we reached Virgina Falls, which is also very impressive. A very large fall, which can be seen from Going to the Sun Road, followed by several downstream cascades, which are worthy sights in their own right.

We enjoyed the views and took in lunch before hustling back to the boat dock.

Upon arriving at the boat dock, we continued on briefly to the viewpoint for Baring Falls. Definitely worth seeing if in the area, but not as impressive as St. Mary and Virginia Falls--both of which were up at the top of my cool waterfalls list in Glacier.

We took the boat back to the dock. Less commentary from the captain on the return, but a nice chance to take a breather between hikes.

If I do this hike again, I would do it in the evening--arriving at the trail head on GTSR around 5:30 pm and then hiking out in the evening. During the summer, it is light till around 10 pm, and the late-day start would be less crowded.

We did this as a quick hike on our drive day from Many Glacier to Fish Creek. Parking can be a challenge, thus we ended up at Sunrift Gorge which was nice as then we saw Baring Falls as well as St. Mary's Falls. In 20/20 hindsight, I should have pushed for us to go to Virginia Falls, as well, but some in our group were worn out after the half marathon run a few days previously together with daily hiking.

Lots of people on the trail, as expected. Pretty hot with no shade (dang heat wave!!),but still a quick and enjoyable hike. I loved the volume of water at St. Mary's Falls. Very impressive! :).

Wanted to do a little hike of some sort before the ranger-guided hike at 1PM on the Highline Trail to Haystack Butte. I didn't want to do anything too heavy so that I would have good energy for the afternoon hike. In retrospect of course, I wish I had gone to Virginia Falls since the Highline hike was called  due to weather (will post video going to the Pass and at Logan Pass of the weather).

At least this morning, though windy, the sun was out and the skies and air was crisp. The smoke finally had moved out of the valley and now, I can finally enjoy not only the scenery of the Park but the air :) . Well there is construction just past the Rising Sun so I wasn't exactly sure where the temporary TH was for this hike. There are a couple and I wanted the short version one. I drove by it and then turned around when I got up too far. Glad I got there when I did as with the construction there is only one TH now and there were cars waiting to get in when I came out of the hike.

The view from here is really spectacular  as you look to Little Chief Mountain. You quickly hike down to the main trail. I discovered at the intersection that it is the Cut Off Trail I was on to get here. Once on the main trail you walk thru the forest along side the lake with occasional viewings of the lake. There was lots of mixed flora along the way. The trail is on an ever so slight of a downgrade all the way to the Falls. I encountered hikers off and on both coming and going. It is a popular hike as it should be due to the reward of seeing the incredible St Mary Falls.

The birds were singing loudly and you can hear them on the video. I shot the videos in HD wide screen format so I'm not sure how that will fare. If you like watching waterfalls, this video will be right up your alley. I always stop at the place just before the Falls so that you can see the bridge and Falls from a distance. Then it was time for the main event and I'm NEVER disappointed :y: . There was only one other person there, a photographer. He was trying all sorts of angles of course. The water as it flows from the bottom area of the Falls is a striking glacial turquoise which is beautiful against the red of the rocks.

I was sorely disappointed :( to see you can't get to the top anymore due to revegetation. So I'm glad Wendy, Gary and I went up there in 2011 as it really is spectacular (I do have it in pics and video). So I went along the trail to Virginia Falls for a bit as the side wall has lots of cool fungi and flora. After goofing around a bit more it was time to head out. The sun decided to play hide and seek as I was trying to capture the rainbow from the falls. Little did I know this was a prelude to what would happen at the Pass.

Heading back I saw more and more hikers were coming down. I did notice this one section where there were a ton of Self Heal (little purple bloomed flora) a few years ago there were only a few this year. I later heard too that a bear had to be shot with rubber bullets after false-charging a tourist :o and that in fact this bear was hassling tourists. The bears are probably a bit out of sorts because of the road construction in this area. There is one bear I call the Rising Sun bear that they've had to put up a sign for no soft-camping at the Rising Sun campground. I actually saw the bear on Friday nite foraging by the Rising Sun.

Once up to the parking area there were cars everywhere and cars waiting to find a spot to park. And now it was time to head up to the Pass but not without stopping a few times. I was on a blooming beargrass search as I heard it was awesome by Lunch Creek. My Going to the Sun Road (GTTSR) journey will be a separate triplog :wrt: .

08/01/2014 Two videos are in production. 8/12/2014 I decided to do it all in one. It is a widescreen HD video but because of the length 16 min, I had to save it to .mpg and then try various uploads for the right format that I could use the stabilizer, SHEESH. Still not as happy with it but if you want to hear the birdies, listen to the water and see a gorgeous falls, I think you'll like this: http://youtu.be/i7x_U0thMcA
