Started from the Fraesfield Trailhead and headed south on the Gooseneck Trail, doing a lasso-Figure8 with the Redbird and Saguaro Nest Trails, heading back on Gooseneck. Clouds to the east provided some early shade, but that went away fairly quickly. It got a bit toasty and humid at times, but the breeezes picked up here and there to cool things off. Saw several bikers along the way but no hikers all morning.

A call went out to the volunteer stewards of the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy for individuals to pick up game cameras in the field. I’m always looking for opportunities to go off trail in the Preserve. 7 of us met on 128th Street (dirt road South of Rio Verde....runs into Tom Thumb TH) and Redbird. Split into 2 groups and were led by other Stewards who know the camera locations. This camera project has ended. One of the chips was reviewed and the Lead sent us one of the pics. I’ll post.

This set of cameras were in the central area of the Preserve, referred to as the Gooseneck. It’s an important area as it allows game to travel from the Southern part of the Preserve all the way North to Tonto National Forest.

Another couple of loops in MSPC and MSPN. Started from Fraesfiled TH and did a loop in central area and then a loop in the northern area. Saw a dead coyote

It was near a road so I guess it was perhaps hit by a vehicle and then moved off to the side near the trail.
Central area was pretty quiet with 2 hikers and 2 bikers. The north was busier with 7 hikers and 15 bikers.

On patrol for McDowell Sonoran Conservancy. Over the last 13 months I've been a steward there has been great improvement in reporting our hike/bike/horse trail patrols. The Conservancy has worked with the City of Scottsdale to determine goals for how often trails should be patrolled. The have been put into categories....once a day, twice a week, once a week and color coded on an online map. Plus a list is available to show when the trail was last patrolled. This morning I reviewed the list and saw that a once a week trail "Redbird" was last patrolled on October 8th.

The list actually has good coverage because of the great increase in mountain bike patrollers who can cover a lot more trail.

I started at the Fraesfield TH and did the north half of the Gooseneck Trail, along with the Redbird Trail and the various Service Road trails along the way. It took me 2 hours to notice that after I had only seen 1 biker and 2 trail runners that probably because of Easter no one was on the trails today. I saw a few more people the 2nd half of the hike, but still much less than a usual Sunday. This trail isn't bad, it has some nice views of the McDowells and some taller vegetation. Nice to get out for a local hike before the weather gets too hot.

I started out at the Fraesfield TH. I was the only vehicle in the lot. I headed down the Gooseneck trail to where I left off the previous week.

I explored Redbird / service road connectors before heading back on the Redbird trail. When I went past the Fraesfield TH, the lot was half full. The mountain bikers came out in full-force at 10am.

I headed North by taking:
Blackhills trail
Bootlegger trail
Granite Mtn Loop trail
Cow Poke Trail
Dove Valley trail

I explored on the old BLM roads that are now part of the preserve. I went the Tonto forest Granite MNT boundary. There are numerous old BLM roads in this area. It looks like there are plans for a numerous new trails. I seen a bunch flagging for new trails.

On the way back I took the new Coyote Canyon trail. This trail is a loop that connects the Dove Valley trail with the Granite Mtn. Loop trail. The Coyote trail starts off is a cool canyon. It's about 90% done. The trail sign is taped on a post and one of intersections has a post without a sign.

I took the following trails back:

Bootlegger trail
136 Street Express trail
Morning Vista trail
Black Hills trail

The weather was perfect. Even though you're in a city park, you can get to the middle of no-where and explore. The Tonto Forest connection opens up a lot of possibilities.

I have now done every trail and every tiny little connector in the Central Region of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

Not difficult at all but takes some planning to not back-track and repeat trails.

Redbird Trail is a pretty area and Saguaro Nest trail is relatively lush with lots of palo verde shade and grass underneath the canopy.

Surprised to see about 3 hikers/dog walkers and 6 bikers. Glad that people are starting to learn about this area of the Preserve.
