This was a sweet hike!! Got here Saturday around 10:30 after going to the asu football game last night (forks up) and the road is closed before you can get to the start of the HAZ posted route. No problem, just an extra 3/4 mile or so. The views quickly opened up over Chevy creek. Saw a big group in the creek and right at the bottom a big group camping :? Not sure if it’s legal. Swam in a nice pool at the bottom. The trail is very hard to find at points, got off trail several times which @Laburns was not a fan of  Overall a great day!!

A last minute decision to visit this area for the first time this year and it turned out to be a pretty good choice. Somehow I'm surprised that Eagle hadn't been in here before and was glad to assist his lagging pursuit of lifetime uniques. I was surprised we encountered only one other person all day. For all the nice spots to camp, none were occupied. Long Tom and Slim Jim toyed with us a bit but we decided to skip their shenanigans this time. We had several hawk sightings, some deer, and what I thought sounded like an elk, but Bruce wasn't so sure. Poops from deer, elk, bear, kitty, and the typical smaller mammals. Plus enough PI to film an entire season of Magnum.

Chums put together a sampler route to this special place that I'd never been to.

We drove to the blocked-off end of FR237 and started the short road hike to our drop-in route down to the bottom of Chevelon Canyon. We got off "route" a bit at the top but worked our way down.

Chevelon Canyon has numerous pools for fishing and many great campsites for those inclined to backpack down, and more importantly, back up the steep canyon exits. There are many use trails at the bottom, but be prepared to get your feet wet and do some rock hopping.

We took a lunch break where the canyon bottom meets the Telephone trail and then retraced our steps to make the climb up Larson Ridge from the north. It gets steep, but if you keep an eye out for the cairns, you'll make your way through the maze to the top.

Halfway up
[ youtube video ]

The rock outcropping at the top was a highlight for me. A great overview of the entire canyon area. Wow.

The Top
[ youtube video ]

A short closed-road walk back to the truck to complete our day. Up top, we could smell/see smoke from the Valentine fire, burning below the rim.

Thanks, Chums; I enjoyed my Chevelon teaser. Chums was upset on the way out that his harem had exited the area.

Parked near point 7398, where the Forest Service has tried in vain to block the road with boulders, trees, etc. ATVs appear to keep finding ways around the barricades. Campsite at the end of FR 237 has been thoroughly white-trashed with Bud Light and tree graffiti. Walked the rest of the road to the rim of the canyon and dropped down the Larson Ridge Route to Chevelon Creek. Treacherous footing and slick sandstone on this route, was kicking myself for forgetting my hiking poles. Hiking stick branches helped some. A little tricky finding the route in the middle portion. Explored a bit of the canyon floor and contemplated a swim in the freezing water (nope). Surprising to see hiker tracks along the creek this early in the year. Someone built a log fort on a scale that would’ve made a 19th century mountain man proud. Completely the opposite of Leave No Trace, but the builder gets an A for effort and engineering. The hike out was easier and I was able to stay on route. The scenery was totally not worth seeing and I give this area a 1 on a scale of 1 to 5. : wink :

I needed a Creek Hike and I wanted to be cool. I got both. I underestimated this Hike and thought I could get Telephone done on the same day. But oh boy, howdy! The amount of effort needed for such a short hike left me thinking I'd just done something technical. And I should've worn my Approach shoes for sure. Instead I wore my old beat up hiking shoes, thinking that I didn't care if I got them wet. I needed more tread for sure at least for the "down". I only fell once, on the ascent, but fell into the hill. I did spend some time using my hands, but only butt scooted a couple of times.

The drive in was cool. 3 Bucks in velvet raced my truck and I let them win. I parked .7 Miles from the end of the Road. There was a short stretch, that if I had done it, I could have gone much further, but I won't be comfortable with areas like that until I get the truck "leveled". That'll bring up the front end another 1 1/2".

The road walk was nice with birds and lots of blooms in some of the more open areas. Got to the end of the road and there was impressive views with impressive camp sites. It was all downhill from there. The Route appears to be different now, than what the official route is showing, and there are cairns taking you to the south, off the actual ridge. I followed them for awhile as there looked to be a trail, but then I lost both the cairns and the "trail". I was tired of traversing the slope anyway so I just hooked up with more game trails and went down to Long Tom Canyon. I figured that I might make this a small loop if I followed the original route back up.

It still took a long time, as I didn't want to end up like the "Oops" guy and my shoe choice made me slow down even more. But with the help of the locals, I made it down just wearing some charcoal from an older burn. The Creek Bed made for some fairly easy going and once there, I made it to Chevelon in about 20 minutes. The Rockhopping was nice for a change and I had a Canyoneering friend show me how to do it so I could be faster and more efficient. I was definitely ready for a break at Chevelon and spent it with a Butterfly for company.

By the time I sat down at Chevelon, dark clouds were starting to appear overhead, in what was a blue sky 30 minutes before. I walked the Fishermen's Trails both ways up and down Chevelon for a bit and enjoyed the creek for awhile. It became even more evident that there would be some rain and I had another Hike in mind to round out the day, so I headed up a cairned route that joined up with the original route. I'll describe the original route in two words. Forget it. Once I was on it, I tried to follow it, but the Oaks, Locust and Deadfall now along this Route made it impossible. I ended up switchbacking back to the east and lo and behold, there was another Cairn. I was able to follow the cairned route almost to the top and then around the south side of the ridge where I had left it before. There was a big difference in the route I took down and the route I was following up and around though. The difference was large rocks and scrambling on the north and east side of the route. The cairns took you to a scramble that looked more like a climb, so I found another place to get up. If I had to do this all over again, I would definitely go back the way I came. Very little rock scrambling needed and it was all much easier. If anyone decides to follow my route all the way down, just keep looking and following game trails. They'll switchback down somewhat, but they get you down with a minimum of obstacles. On a slope like that, the deer would rather go around most of the deadfall too.

Have I mentioned that I got rained on? I'm halfway up the ascent and it started sprinkling a bit and then there was thunder. I wasn't quite to the top of the first bump in the ridge and realized that it was time to drag out the gear. I left my regular rainsuit in the truck, but I always carry a poncho and an old pack cover for the camera case. I covered my pack with it's pack cover, covered the camera and donned the poncho which also helped cover both. And then it rained. And the Rocks got slick. But the cairns took me somewhat off the top so I wasn't as worried about any lightning. As far as Rains go, it was a great rain. Never a torrential downpour like I would see later, but a nice, steady, heavy, falling rain. I wish I had gotten video, it was beautiful with big drops falling into the canyons. The weather would follow me the rest of the day until I got a ways down the hill.

Back at the truck, I threw the wet covers in the back and started driving out. I knew my 2nd "Hike" that I had planned wasn't going to happen so I decided to hit Black Canyon Lake for a shorter hike. Made it to the turnoff and the skies opened up in earnest. I pulled over and it poured, hailed and thundered for 45 minutes and then became a lighter rain and thunder. Black Canyon Lake wasn't going to happen either. The skies to the West looked almost blue with puffy clouds, so I headed west. Willow Springs looked promising so I went in there. The crowds were insane. Sinkhole Campground was full, on a Wednesday. I'll do a short triplog of Willow Springs. But it didn't last long either, as the weather caught me pretty fast.

Larson was amazing, but hard, especially after not doing anything last week. Knowing what I know and have seen, I'd do it again someday. But other routes into Chevelon have yet to be done, so it may be awhile before I do this one again. But it filled what I needed on this day, plus some. Where's that Weightlifter Emoji when you need it??? A short hike that takes time and tries to seriously kick your pumpkin. I'm feeling it a bit today.

Moderate due to places along the road were heavy, but down in the canyon, it's light. With that said, the variety down by the creek was pretty cool.

Dodged a few rain drops on my drive in. Road 237 is in decent shape anyway all the way down to the usual parking spots. I cruised the mountain bike on down the last mile or so and ran into a father son duo that were looking for the route down to the creek for a 3 day stint. They followed me on the bike as far as they could drive and I gladly showed them the route down. The trail is loose, steep, and hard to follow in spots. The creek is pretty low and the deeper spots are getting mossed in pretty good. I saw several other fishermen working their way upstream. The campsite with the fortress has been modified since last year. Hiked back out just as the skies darkened and opened.

I really love Chevelon and it's been over a year so I wanted to return. I took my friend Sabine down this route. She is a casual hiker and doesn't like rocky ankle breakers. This hike was not a good idea for her. She did fine but it was slow going. The route is fairly rocky and off camber for much of the way. There are a few short scramble sections near the bottom. Ultimately, we got down fine, it just took a while and left us less time for the canyon part.

Once in the canyon bottom, we headed down stream for the lake. We had to cross the creek through a brushy section. Once on the other side, we followed the use trail and admired this amazing canyon! Chevelon is just beautiful and the hiking is relaxed. We took a variety of pics and took our lunch break at the bottom of Telephone Ridge. A place I've camped at a few times.

After lunch, we started our return. Again, it was easy going as we headed back up canyon. We took fewer pics and cruised up. The bugs were really annoying and we didn't want to stop. I was also doing my best to dance around the poison ivy. I saw a lot of large healthy leaves right along the path. I think I'm in the clear, writing this four days later. Anyways, we hit the Larson Ridge Route and headed up. It was slow going but Sabine did great and we topped out around mid-afternoon. I felt really bad on how rugged the route was for her. I was extremely patient with her, not one of my better qualities.

I really did enjoy the Larson Ridge Route. It's a short distance but takes time to cover. I think it drops you off in the best part of the canyon too. I will return another time.

Wanted to revisit this gem after just flirting with it last visit.
With the literal hoards of people camped on Larson Ridge I figured there would be some backpackers down in the canyon which I expected but upon my arrival at the main sites I saw no trace of anyone!

Weather and conditions could not have been better so in the most prime of spots I set my pack down and did some cliff jumping and swimming while my dog nervously watched from above :)

I continued upstream and that is where I surprisingly had my only human encounter of the day.
I fisherman Steve and I met in a brush thicket in the bottom of a gnarly side canyon he just finished descending.
I believe we both thought one another was wildlife as it was the last place to see someone and the fresh heaping piles of bear scat everywhere just added to the primal instinct of wonder.

This place really is a true paradise and the further upstream seemed to have less visitors and still plenty of pools and scenery.
Returned to the cliffs for sunset photo time that was interrupted by a large bull elk crashing through the creek below, he and the cow elk I literally scared the piss out of earlier in the day were the only wildlife sightings of the hike.

Camped on Larson away from all the riff raff and enjoyed a great 24 hours outdoors.

Made a quick day trip to Chevelon to fish and explore further upstream. 237 is a smooth ride all the way untill about the last mile. Lots of folks car camping. The route down is very well defined. Burned areas all around. Cairns mark the decent all the way. Upstream about 1/2 mile is a campsite usually containing trash, old grills, and log furniture. Today, there is a large corral type structure that is maybe 40 feet in diameter. There were several tents inside and outside. The wind was brutal all day. Fishing was tough. Have to come back when I can build a fire.

We got to the end of FR119 at about 7pm on Sunday after being held up in traffic on 87 for an hour by a brush fire that was caused by someone's trailer towing truck catching fire and pulling over onto the shoulder. We dropped down the ridge quickly and camped in the meadow below by the creek. Next day we did some leisurely day hikes along the creek and explored the area. Such a beautiful canyon! Laying in the dark on the meadow watching the moon and the stars was so much better than the 110 degree heat in the valley :) We packed up early the 2nd morning and hiked back up the ridge. Traffic back into the valley wasn't bad considering it was 4th of July.

I had extensive plans which included 1 night camping upstream from Larson ridge, 1 night camping at the lake, and the last night joining some other folks near Telephone Ridge trail. Unfortunately my plans had to change, my youngest daughter and some last minute HS grad functions...
I was only able to complete the first part of that plan. It was chilly, super windy, and it snowed a bit Thursday night. I did manage to further explore upstream from Larson ridge. Again I was surprised at how there are such nice trails following the creek upstream (south). I found several additional busted up camps and a few more blue tarps. Managed to catch a few browns, including this one which was released. I turned around but the trails kept going. A thru-hike from lake to lake is way over due...

With triple digit temperatures in the forecast I knew I had to escape the brain melt to enjoy water and cooler weather!
Car camped on top of Larson Ridge Thursday night to get a head start for my Cinco de Hike-O day since I had to come back to the valley to work this weekend as usual. :(

As described the Larson Ridge route is very steep but well traveled, to be exact it's 700ft in .65 miles from the edge to the canyon bottom.
But in a matter of moments it was over and I was greated with perhaps one of my new favorite places in Arizona!

The early morning was pure bliss, soft warm light, towering canyon walls and cool clear water made me one happy camper!

After some solid tripod time I leisurely roamed around splashing in pools and relaxing along the many scenic beaches and campsites.

The one thing I really enjoyed about this place was the rarity of easy walkable benches with plently of room all while residing inside a rather steep canyon, certainly a relaxing difference than the majority of Arizona canyons I've navigated through.

Before making the steep afternoon climb up Larson I found a nice swimming hole and fully submerged myself in the cold refreshing canyon water.
I proceeded to do the same for my dog since she is not the most willing of swimmers even though she certainly can.

The cool dunk was a good idea because even though the trek up was over quick it was nearly a foot forward and a foot up for awhile and had both my dog and I taking a quick nap in the shade once atop the ridge.

Fun day exploring a new place and I hope to be back in the area soon for an overnighter with some of the Hazzers!

I couldn't wait any longer to get back down to Chevelon. I mean, I miss my campfire just like most folks, but where better to camp without a fire than Chevelon? Since I had Friday off work I decided to mix it up a bit. I made good time early in the AM with almost no traffic past Payson and up the rim. I drove 5.5 miles down 237 and parked. The first 3.5 miles would be no problem for cars. There are plenty of car camping spots in this stretch. After that there are few rough spots that will likely be sloppy when it rains hard. I loaded up the mountain bike and headed north. I probably could have driven another mile or so. I stashed the bike near the fallen tree that blocks the road. Most high clearance vehicles can make to this spot no problem. Few will make it past. There are plenty of car camping spots around. The hike was fairly fast with a bit of route finding after the trail drops down on the east side of the final "cul-de-sac camp spot". The trail is steep but short. Nice views are taken in along the way. I got off trail at the end and came down by some red tree flags instead of the cairn-ed terminus. I hiked upstream a ways, passed "wooden couch trash camp". The pots and pans have moved...
I found the nice spot further upstream empty and moved in for two nights. I managed to catch a decent brown trout before dark a bit further upstream, and released it. No fire! The sun came up early on Saturday. There was some sort of nest in the cliff across the creek from my camp, and these birds were so noisy. Maybe baby birds were hungry, or mom was trying to get them to fly and they didn't want to? I spent the day exploring first upstream a bit. The poison ivy really sets in and the trail gets more faint the farther upstream you go. Rain threatened after lunch. Rain fell after lunch. I saw two guys fly fishing near my camp later on still. No fire again!I hit the trail Sunday at 8:15 and made it back to my bike in just over an hour. The trail is steep, but somewhat easier to follow going uphill.
Overall, not sure how much if any time or effort this route saves you over Telephone ridge. Still, a neat way to go. I would bring poles next time if I was bringing a backpack.

Nice quick overnight to Chevelon creek from the Telephone trail. Glad ALMAL was able to make it as we would have all starved without his monster catch! :app:

Absolutely delicious fish and damn near 20" which is pretty good for a trout in my book. Surprisingly popular down there this weekend, with a non-wilderness-approved group of boy scouts, and at least 3 other groups of 2. Some possibly more amorous and revealing than others. :o

I learned a lot about how to catch fish as well as those toys in the crane vending machines at walmart. Gonna put that to good use in the future! :)

Saturday I headed upstream to Larson Ridge and hiked the ridge road for a while before dropping back down to the creek. Enjoyed a few miles along the creek. Multiple awesome fishing holes and campsites along the way. For the most part there is a use trail away from the creek that allows for fairly high-speed travel, but of course the highlights are along the creek, and that's a bouldery, slower-moving route.

I now only have about 4 miles of Chevelon Canyon between Woods Canyon and the lake that I haven't hiked. Should be able to knock that out in a relatively easy day sometime.

Good to see Joelle and Nick again, and to meet Darren. Thanks to 9L for the planning, yadda yadda.

*stats are only for the saturday day hike as described and shown on the linked gps track.

HAZ - Event
So I contacted everyone signed up for this trip, and we agreed to postpone it a week.

As it turns out, the trip went terrible, first of all the backpacking part was way too easy, down the short trail to a creekside camp. Then there was the horrible scenery, the old growth pines, the pristine creek with cool water, expansive meadows filled with wildflowers, who wants to put up with that? Then there is the fact that there is a pretty decent trail up and down the canyon, with access routes at Trail 180 and Larson Ridge. And it didn't even rain on me on Saturday. Glad all you folks avoided signing up.

Tugger
Mark and Tug and I headed up to Chevelon, planning on paddling at the lake. Well, the weather didn't cooperate, so we ended up leaving the boats on the top of the truck the whole weekend and car camping and meandering down to the creek instead. Tug and Mark fished and I walked along the creek. What a beautiful area!!!!!! Wow!

Decided to investigate this route up Larson Ridge. It's very steep but also very well traveled. It is a single traverse with the only switchbacks quick 5-foot sections to get around small ledges. If you carry a pack down this route, hiking poles would be helpful on the descent.

The last half mile of road is impassable, so the hike begins at the high-point of the ridge. Great views straight down to the creek 800 feet below. Pay attention to the cairns for the where the route drops off the ridge and begins the traverse down the west side of the ridge.

Super fun overnight in an amazing location. The drive in was an adventure with as much as 6 inches of snow. All the roads up there are completely destroyed. The rim road will be an absolute mess until it gets graded again. The car wash attendent is gonna hate me tomorrow. :y:

By the time we got to the trailhead, we had dropped enough elevation that the snow was patchy, and the hike went a bit slow due to the snow and mud. But camp was set up quickly and we tried our luck at fishing, but the midday light wasn't good so we headed downstream to the lake. There are two creek crossings but we managed both without getting wet. A few hours later, 9L and I tried our luck with the fish again, and this time luck was on our side. 9L struck first, and I followed up just a few minutes later! Woot! Dinner! :y:

In the morning we headed upstream and I investigated the Larson Ridge route that ALMAL had inquired about. Nice to know of alternative access point. Plenty of camp sites down here, and the first couple miles south was reminiscent of the Houston Brothers trail. I should come back here more often :)
