Camped at Peralta Regional Park last night with a group of fellow employees from Grand Canyon. Woke up bright and early for a quick hike. Silly was perfect due to the varying abilities of our group.

It's easy on the hungover folk and perfect for the non-hikers.
The two of us with way too much energy for that walking nonsense took to the low elevation with gusto.
We tagged the "summit" 3 times before the others were back to the trailhead. My friends smart watch said 4.7 miles, but we haven't bothered adding it up. I'll have her do it later

We then loaded up the work van and i drove us up to Payson for lunch then off to Petrified forest, Flagstaff and home to the canyon. Long driving day for sure, but worth it.

Bye week for the Steelers, so I took Dmitri with me out for a quick morning hike. I wanted something close by and not too hard, so this looked like a good option. There were a few trails that I hadn't done before, so there was something new to explore. It had been already over 7 years since our last visit here, time flies.

We started on the Brittlebrush Trail and took that to the Superstition View Trail, then headed up to Old Baldy and looped around the smallerpeak on the Coyote Loop and Jackrabbit Trails. While we were on Old Baldy, I noticed trails to the east of the park on the flat area there. We headed down to that area, which joins the Silly Mountain trails at the junction of the Old Baldy and Crest Trails.

We followed those unmapped trails to where they ended on the sidewalks and then bushwhacked over the one hill to where I saw another trail on our way over. That trail headed south to a service road under the powerlines south of the park, so it seemed like the thing to do to just follow that back to the trailhead. The road were were on faded into a singletrack which meandered away from the powerlines and then went back to them, joining another service road, which took us back to the parking area.

Saw a few other hikers, but it wasn't crazy busy. Nice weather and nice to explore and discover some new trails.

When is a trail not a trail? When it is a road might come to mind......how about when it takes less than 2 minutes to hike? Don't get me wrong all the trails in this "system" have some endearing qualities, if nothing else, the view of Flatiron is first rate, but all the trails are ridiculously short! Today I wanted to knock off the Coyote Loop. Got there around 5am. Still dark so I headed up with a headlamp. Went up on the Brittle Bush trail. A short rocky ascent to the saddle. Then hopped on Superstition View to connect to the Huff N Puff trail. This was a short rocky ascent to the Crest trail. Took Crest over to High Point trail. High Point is a very short trail, but is a fun scramble to the "peak". Got there when it was still dark. Nice looking out and seeing the lighted cityscape. Took Crest back to where it terminated with the Old Baldy trail. Crest is one of the longer trails in the system and relatively flat with the exception of a some switchbacks. Old Baldy is a very short trail, even sorter, because I cut off do Coyote Loop. Coyote Loop is a very short trail (sensing a theme?) that connect to the Jack Rabbit trail. Coyote trail is neat...nice rock work in the area and there is a stone bench under a palo verde tree. Very aesthetic! Switchbacked down the Jack Rabbit to connect to the Superstition View Trail. Nice views of the Supes....and the homes just to the east :? Connected back to the Brittle Bush trail which I took back to the car. Nice area. Worthy of 1, maybe 2 trails, but not 11. Wildlife included a field mouse and a rabbit. Temps were great, probably in the low 70's :) Met 4 people near the TH, but had the trails to myself for the most part. That wasn't easy to do. When I left I counted 24 cars in the lot. For a trail system that small, I am not sure how I dodged all those hikers

Made a loop tying a bunch of trails together. Somebody has to do these to balance out the diversity on HAZ. :D :y:

Roadside Benchmark (a.k.a. Silly Mountain) has been on my to-do list almost forever and although I'd think about it every time I drove by, I always thought someday!

Well, this morning it was the first thing that came to mind so I figured I finally knock it out. To be honest, the main reason I kept putting it off was the number of times I read about vehicle break-ins at the park in the AJ newspaper. That along with all the signs posted about not leaving valuables in your vehicle as well as knowing of two separate individuals who actually saw their vehicle broken into from up on the trail yet could do nothing to stop it... one time there were even other people in the parking lot who simply turned away... I see nothing! (like Schultz on Hogan's Heroes)

So... with plenty of tools, CB, DVD player, 12V cooler and such in the Jeep along with liability-only insurance, I never felt comfortable taking the gamble. Well I did today, hustling through the hike just to get it done.

While I may have been a bit paranoid about it, since my Cannondale bike was stolen from a locked vehicle I would rather take my chances with rattlesnakes than tweakers seeking loot to pawn.
:M2C:
Almost forgot, one video...
Silly Mountain summit panorama

Sorry about the slightly jerky video... I simply can't hold the phone as steady as I can with the Canon camera.
