Short walk in the park.
Beautifully cool weather.
The park is busting with blooming flora.
Banana Yucca, Poppys, Brittlebush, Dichelostemma capitatum, Fiddleneck, Scorpionweed,Desert Chicory, Globemallow, Luppine, Woolly Daisy, Wiry Lotus, Chuparosa and even Microseris :), to name a few.

This is the best time of year to enjoy this park

With afternoon plans, the goal was to hit a few trails out there I had not been on.

There were no @Mazatzal or @Crzy4AZ sightings

Went back up to the northern part of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve to hike more trails I haven't done before the start of football season. I started at the end of 136th St. again and hiked my way over to the Old Camp Trail and back again. I took 136th St. Express, Barb's Trail, Old Paint Wash Trail, High Desert Trail, Hawknest, Dove Valley, Stagecoach, Old Camp, Hawknest again, Stagecoach again, then Dove Valley all the way back to Barb's to 136th St. Express and back to my car.

I only saw 2 hikers very early and then a few bikers after that. I think for the last 3.5 hours of my hike I didn't see anyone. on the Dove Valley Trail right before the step over gate at the NW corner of the park there was a diamondback lying on the trail. I got some pics and walked around him, going off trail for a bit. He turned his head to look at me a bit as I inched closer to him, so I decided not to get him riled up for the sake of a nicer pic with him all coiled up.

There's a map and kiosk up in that NW corner of the park at the step over gate. Not sure if it's ok to park here, although it seems kind of remote to drive to.

Hiked over a half marathon this morning, total time 4 hours, 57 mins, with only 5 min, 31 seconds of total non-moving time. Not really even sore, I think the beastly hike Wally and I did last week on Mt. Lemmon helped with that.

Kind of funny how this hike worked out. My plan was to get a 10 mile run in involving the Broken Spoke. Driving out to the trails, I was really looking forward to the trails I'd be doing but I was dreading the conditions. I noticed as I was getting ready to go that the air was heavy and still and I thought for sure when I got to the TH that the weather would be warm, humid and no breeze. Much to my surprise when I got to the TH a little after 6am, there was a nice breeze with temps, that felt at worst, to be in the low 80's. With conditions like that the humidity never felt bad. I took the Brown's Ranch Road Trail north with the intention of tying into the Corral Trail. Unfortunately, I missed the turn and ended up going out to Powerlines Road#1. Realizing that I had missed the turn, I decided to follow the Powerline Road until I ran into another trail. I was still seeing McDowell Sonoran Preserve signage so I knew it was just a matter of time before I had options. Sure enough, about a mile into the Powerline Road I came upon the Old Camp Trail. This is supposedly where the Broken Spoke Trail terminates as well but I missed that. (I was missing all kinds of things today...first the turn for the Corral Trail and then the back end of the Broken Spoke Trail). I was fine with doing the Old Camp. I just wanted to incorporate a trail that I hadn't done before. Followed the Old Camp Trail until it tied into the Hawks Nest Trail. (This was a smooth transition, so this means the GPS info is a bit off for one of these two trails. The HAZ map has the Old Camp Trail ending in the desert with no tie in. But it ends at the Hawks Nest Trail). Since I hadn't planned on doing Old Camp, I didn't have an idea of what laid further east. So I backtracked .5 miles and took the StageCoach south. This brought me into areas I was familiar with and I was able to complete my loop via the Cholla, Dry Gulch, and Corral Trails. The Corral Trail got me back to Brown's Ranch Road which I took back to the TH. I have to say, that I wasn't as thrilled with some of these as I have been in the past. These trails are more functional - get me there trails - and some may even have quite a bit of history. But they are not the trails that make me appreciate the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. The Brown's Ranch Road Trail, Powerline Road#1, Corral Trail and Old Camp Trail are all more roads and/or washes than they are trails. Not that enjoyable to hike on, but the scenery was nice. (They do drain well though, recent rains did not negatively impact them at all). I really enjoyed the StageCoach and Cholla. Nice, single track meandering trails. Ideal for biking and running. Funny how things work. Weather was great, but trails not as much as anticipated.

1st trip
Had to work yesterday morning but I was tallying up how miles I have left to re-join the ever growing ATC "all trails club" of McDowell Sonoran Preserve. I hit the mark last year - and then when total went up to 163 miles - I've been working since last spring to get all the segments done by foot. So I realized I only have less than 10 and I had yesterday afternoon of freedom with kids out of town - and I knew I had to get a hike in.

I parked at a legal spot on Legend Trail Parkway that is full on the weekends with room for 6-8 cars (thanks for info @Sun Ray) but I was the only one there at 1:00pm on a Wednesday. I kept my work clothes on but changed into hiking shoes and set off. It's AZ State Land Trust land between the parking area and marker BR9 in the MSP. Well worn trails for neighborhood folks and old Moto routes. It can be really confusing - so recommend having GPS route unless you don't mind wandering around a little. Having MAPRIKA App is also helpful. You are a bouncing blue ball on the MSP trails - I use that app all the time in the new north.

Saw some old ranching ruins and then turned to get on BR9 (end of Brown's Ranch Rd trail) and Powerline Road #1 trail. Took Powerline Rd up 2 miles to Dove Valley trail. (I had already done upper segment of PL#1 few weeks ago). Yucky of course to be under and around powerlines - but nice to not see anyone and pretty good expansive views.

I really like Old Camp Trail - going to write it up for HAZ soon. Then grabbed Broken Spoke segment I was missing (that is a fantastic little trail) - and took Hawknest back down to BR9. I got lost twice in the State Land Trust return to my car. Was glad to have GPS route.

And my time was super good - 3.3 mph - after working all morning. Of course it's super flat and not difficult. But that's still pretty fast for me just walking. Saw ZERO hikers the whole time. Saw dozen bikers. One 4x4ATV at intersection of Tonto Forest and Dove Valley trail (was in Tonto legally).

Life returns to normal on Thursday - love my tender chickens - but I did get in some good hikes while they were gone.
