From the Campbell Mesa TH, I rode south on Old Walnut Canyon Rd. for ⅓ mile, then turned right onto the official loop trail at FR 301D. The forest road looked like hard packed dirt, but it was deceptively sandy. Not enough sand to stop me, but enough to make my bike squirrelly. It's also cut up with mud ruts.

You can ride the forest road to within ¼ mile of Fisher Point, but at the 1⅓ mile mark, I splits left onto signed FLT singletrack.

The FLT climbs 35 ft. in less than 200 yds. (a 6.8% grade). The trail then more or less levels out for the next 1½ miles, crossing FR 9137D along the way. Mostly smooth to FR 9137D, the trail surface gets rockier after that. Enough so that I had to make an emergency stop. Let’s just say mullein — aka “cowboy toilet paper” — is insufficient. 😬

The FLT then crosses FR 9157 and climbs 55 ft. in ¼ mile. Being a flatlander, the elevation and rockiness made the 4.2% grade seem steeper. I was sucking wind, so the slight descent over the next ⅔ mile was a relief. Just before crossing FR 301D, the singletrack splits. Stay left. I tried to make a sharp right, slid my front tire on a loose rock, and crashed.

Barely a minute later, making the rocky climb up from FR 301D, I got left of the trail, into the soft stuff. Another front tire slide, and down I went. Harder. Scrapes on elbows, knee, knuckle and gouged my palm. The bruises stung more. I was back on my bike in less than a minute.

At just under the five mile mark, I turned left, off FLT onto FR 301, which had worse mud ruts than FR 301D, but at least there was no sand. Where FR 301 bends left, split right towards the logged off parking area. The next ½ mile to Fisher Point was the rockiest of all.

Wish I'd brought a murderwich so I could enjoy a picnic along with the Fisher Point views.

After I turned right out the logged parking area, onto FR 301, I saw four bull elk with velvet antlers. Unfortunately, my GoPro battery had run out, and I hadn’t bothered loading my spare. By the time I deployed my iPhone, they were gone. A ¼ mile past the parking area, I turned left onto FR 301D. Since I was (mostly) riding the FLT, my return trip focused on flower photos. 📸

Tufted evening primrose, purple locoweed, red & yellow pea, cliff rose, some wire lettuce-looking pink thing I've been trying to figure out for years, and either scarlet penstemon or skyrocket (did not stop to check). Should be better in a month.

From my friend's house, I followed a section of the FUTS (Flagstaff Urban Trail System) along a city street called High Country Trail, and into the woods. This took me past the airport, and across Lake Mary Road to JW Powell Blvd., and another section of the FUTS. Then I turned off onto a trail, followed part of the Flagstaff Loop Trail, but turned off it to go down Skunk Canyon, which is really fun. Skunk is a seductive ride, very smooth, going ever so slightly downhill. Eventually the canyon narrows, and I knew it would become very rocky (I'd been there once before). I wanted to ride only about 10-12 miles anyway, so I retraced my wheels back to my friend's house. Gorgeous day, Memorial Day weekend, and I saw 5 mountain bikers and 1 hiker. I mostly had the whole trail to myself. On the other hand, I saw there was no available parking at the Elden trailhead, and I imagine that Sandy's Canyon and other named TH's were mobbed as well.

This trail is within a large area, which includes Fisher's Point, Sandy Canyon, Rio de Flag, Campbell Mesa and a section of the AZT, which is set aside as non-motorized, right next to the city!

I promise my next triplog will be actual hiking! My achy hip is a lot better, so I'll try some hiking next, see how it goes.

Lovely day to mtn bike the trails in Ft Tuthill (including the Bridge and Highland trails) and out to Rogers Lake, which really is a legit lake right now after the wet winter. Trails are easy to moderate riding, often rocky but no white knuckle drops or climbs.

We fulfilled a long-time goal by going backpacking this weekend without ever getting into our car or any other vehicle.

On Saturday morning, we walked a couple of miles from our house to the Flagstaff Loop Trail, took the loop trail to the intersection with AZT #33, hiked down to Fisher Point, and then north on AZT passage 31 to a nice spot overlooking Walnut Canyon. It probably hit 35 overnight, which was a little cold for my "32-degree" summer bag (currently more like 40 degrees), but the stars were fantastic. That you can see the milky way a couple of miles outside of Flagstaff is just amazing.

The next morning, we went a mile or so cross country to pick up the loop trail and took that all the way back home. We probably saw 20 elk, including a huge male. There's no hunting north/west of Walnut Canyon, and I'm sure the elk are smart enough to know this--you don't see them in this area in the spring or summer.

This was a super pleasant, ridiculously easy trip, with great weather, lots of big trees, and hardly any people--just a few bikers on the loop trail. We already scouted out a better campsite for our next door-to-door trip up here.

I'm not sure what "Dry Tank" is, but there's a guzzler just west of this location, south of the Loop Trail (and perfectly visible from the trail). Water was very cloudy--we didn't take any. But the tank was mostly full.

Plenty of water, and pretty clear except for the floaties. It tasted like flowers (maybe because of all the bees in the water?) but was totally drinkable.

I finished my first solo backpacking trip for this Flagstaff loop trail. I really enjoy myself in the forest wood. The whole trip is pretty good just in Elden Mt area there are a lot of side trails looks like go everywhere. I made some wrong turn but came back the right trail very quickly using my new GPS Etrex 30x. I started to love this small unit. Moving time 15 hrs 19 minutes average 3.1 m/h. that is pretty good for me. There are a lot of mosquito in this season and I forgot my spray too. Guess what? There is only small creek flowing water between I-40 with Hwy 89. I went to Gas station to get my water. Made 4 short cuts on whole trial otherwise will be close to 49 miles. should be ready for my next week Europe TMB solo backpacking trip. Cheer!

P.S. I run into cows in the flat area with gate on AZT after crossed I-40. i noticed the cows started to toward to me after I was into the gate. I ran out of gate again, not sure they came to me friendly or ... until I saw a big bull ran down the hill and jumped into fence, chased the cows away from me. Thanks, brother. you saved me. I still don't understand why that happened because I ware orange shirt that day?
