After doing Mt. Trumbull, stopped by this trail. Definitely worth a visit. Easy hike and a ton of petroglyphs all over the smooth volcanic rock out there.

After our bike, hike and climb of [ Mollies Nipple - GC ] on Saturday, I did the onerous, three-hour 4x4 drive from near [ Mount Dellenbaugh ] over to Whitmore Canyon Overlook. I arrived at eight o'clock with only one large group of circled wagons present. The following morning, the fleeting lava dam hike was my first trek of three total completed on Sunday. The second was to the summit of an inactive volcano and my third hike was a mystifying and mellow meander amongst what could be considered vandalism today, but it's precious because it's archeo. : wink :

1. [ Whitmore Trail ]
The creosote and ocotillo were flowering profusely with many buzzing bees working the buds early. This trail seemed easy on this somewhat cool morning. The night before was the warmest camp I'd stayed at so far. The columnar basalt near the base of the lava flow is absolutely magnificent. Numerous swifts were chirping, swooshing and dive-bombing near the black cliffsides. There wasn't a river party camped at the contentious Whitmore Helipad (RM 186.9), so consequently no vexing helicopter flights overhead this day. The river was chocolate brown and I only lingered briefly at two of the beach access points. It would of been nice to have a bath! : wink : There were more good hikes to complete before it got warmer.

2. [ Mount Trumbull Trail ]
This hike switchbacks steeply at first then gradually ascends the southern lava slopes through Pinyon–juniper woodland with many manzanita thickets, agave and oak trees. There are quite a few fresh and old deadfalls along the route, more so the higher one ascends. The first half of trail is pumice stones with occasional good views south of the Mount Logan Wilderness and the amazing spatter ramparts. The end of the first part on the east side allows great views of Red Butte and the San Francisco Peaks. The first part of the second half transverses a burnt area with some annoying locust and downed logs and then enters an unburnt ponderosa forest and tracks the south (left) side of a drainage for a while. The upper second half is mostly duff, somewhat obscure with some rockiness near the summit. The few remaining prudent cairns are helpful at keeping on route. A transient stroll past the summit benchmark to the north is worth the view towards Utah. :)

3. [ Nampaweap Rock Art Site ]
I have few words to describe this immemorial location. These ancient rock chippers were skilled at creating some intricate and compelling designs. They seem to have had some leisure time. :-s It was splendid experiencing this site alone. You should visit for yourself and draw your own conclusions. I think you'll also be moved.

Day 4
While picking up camp, We started talking about what I had planned for days 4 and 5. It was 150 miles down a rough 4x4 trail. It would have taken about 2 days to finish. We decided to save this section for another trip, eventhough It would have been some of the best views of the trip. We then started toward our day 6 stops. Mount Trumbull Schoolhouse is always a nice little stop, if your in the area. The schoolhouse seamed to have had a rough 2 years. I don't think its being upkept anymore. We then headed to Nampaweap Petroglyphs site and to Mount Logan. Nampaweap has some nice petroglyphs and Mount Logan has some nice views for a short hike. We set up camp at Mount Logan for the night. Its a great camping spot at 7500ft. Great views and weather.

After making the ascent of the Kaibab Plateau highpoint the day before, we drove to the Trumbull TH and car camped for the night. There was a very clean vault toilet there and a water spigot, so it was a good place to camp

Mount Trumbull
We got up early, had a quick breakfast and a cup of coffee, and hiked up to Trumbull. This was a class 1 walkup on a nice trail. We gained about 1,000 feet of elevation in the first 1.4 miles or so; thereafter, the grade was much more gradual. The hike was in a forest, which was nice, and there were some decent views off to the south. The trail got a bit more faint about 75% of the way to the summit, but there were lots of cairns which made route-finding a non-issue. With all the trees, views were limited at the summit. We walked a short distance to an overlook on the north side of the mountain which had some decent views. At the summit there was a benchmark, two reference marks, a height of light pole stuck in a summit cairn, and a register log.

We went back the way that we came, broke up our campsite, and headed out on the 7 mile drive to the Mount Logan TH.

Mount Logan
This was a short hike on a nice trail that was easy to follow. The hike was in a forest, but things opened up at the summit where there were some surprisingly good views. This was an easy, enjoyable hike!

Vulcan's Throne
After hiking Mount Logan, we drove toward Toroweap. The BLM roads were really good to drive on, but the roads were quite a bit worse once getting into the Granc Canyon NP. We took a road toward the Lava River Trail, and it was getting really sandy and we were lucky not to get stuck in my buddy's AWD CRV. Thankfully he had some new all terrain tires. I would not recommend driving the road without 4WD. We found a pullout to park and made the off-trail ascent of this peak, which was my 2nd Grand Canyon summit. We basically followed the route that @chumley used when he ascended this peak. As we ascended we were mostly next to a gully that went up to a ridgeline just west of the summit.

On the way up we saw the biggest jackrabbit that I have ever seen -- at first I thought that it was a deer!

The climb up was a bit steep, but the footing was not as bad as I thought that it would be. Views at the summit were great, and were worth the climb up. It was crazy windy on this day -- gusts were 40+ mph -- so we didn't stay as long as I would have liked. The descent was fairly easy -- even though there was no trail we could see the car the whole way down so route finding was no issue.

Toroweap
After getting back to the car we drove to the Toroweap overlook. The road was pretty crappy, and even though we made it in the CRV, it is really a 4WD road. We had a snack break at a picnic table and checked out some views of the Colorado River. However, winds were really crazy and we didn't really want to spend too much time on the edge of a cliff with 3,000 foot dropoffs, so we didn't spend as much time there as I would have liked. I had originally intended to hike the Saddle Horse Loop, but with the wind we decided to pass on it.

Summary
This was a fun day of hiking, although the ridiculous winds in the afternoon took some of the fun out of it.

Distance and elevation gain for the 3 hikes (I didn't count Toroweap) are below. The stats above are the sum of the 3.

Trumbull: 5.4 miles with 1,629 feet of AEG
Logan: 1.1 miles with 272 feet of AEG
Vulcan's: 1.6 miles with 738 feet of AEG

Final hike of 2018! It was just an add-on after Trumbull, but Parashant does a pretty good job with things up here and this one was nicely signed.

I don't usually make a point of visiting this kind of thing, but I gotta say this one is pretty impressive. There's a lot of art over a pretty good distance. And I'm sure we missed a bunch of it in our tourist mode drive-by visit!

This hike was a nice little side-trip on the way out to Toroweap. The trail was very well-defined and rather easy. There's not much to say about the hike itself, it's the (very abundant) rock art that you're there to see.
