I did a version of this loop without the Bluff Trail. At the north part of the Pemberton Trail I saw some horse trails that aren't on any maps. I hiked one short spur of one to note it on my track. I may go back one day to hike those trails to see where they go. I took the Granite adn Delsie Trails out to the Pemberton Trail, then after the Lariat Trail, I took the Wagner and Tortoise Trails back to the lot.

the clear skies made for the best pictures at sunrise with some light cloud cover and the early light hitting the McDowells. After that the clouds rolled in, which made for drab lighting, but for comfortable weather to hike in. Missed the rain by a few minutes and was hit by light rain on the drive home. Still had plenty of time to spare from the bigger storms that hit later in the afternoon.

We decided to make a loop with the Wagner, Pemberton and Delsie trails. Typical hiking for this park, didn't see many folks,

Had Friday off work so went out to McDowell Mountain Regional Park for a long trail run. The trails are all great for trail running and mountain bikers who basically own the trail. I did a shorter loop on Pemberton, Lariat, Bluff and Granite. Then finished up with full Pemberton loop. Last 4 miles really started to hurt but nice to get over 20 miles for first time this year!

Long trail run loop around Pemberton. I added a couple of extra trails the Lariat and Chuparosa. Really liked the Chuparosa trail which is about 4 mile loop back to Pemberton. Awesome temps and never felt warm even at 2pm finish.

Ended the year with a trail run so why not start the new year with a trail run. Started from Pemberton trailhead and went counter clockwise up to Dixie Mine Trail and then over to Coachwhip Trail. Followed Coachwhip back to Pemberton and continued the loop with another side trip on Lariat Trail before finishing up. Great weather for a run with temps around 50 and snow capped views of Four Peaks to look at along the way :)

Another solo Friday hike for me...

Starting from the Wagner Trailhead at McDowell Mountain Regional Park (MMRP), I hiked Wagner, left on Granite, right on Bluff, left on Pemberton, right on Rock Knob, right on Gooseneck. When I came to the county park connectors which led back into the park, I took the connector that brought me over to the Saguaro Nest Trail. I hiked a short ways on Saguaro Nest and then (finally) took the connector which brought me back into MMRP. At that point, I got back onto the Pemberton and headed east, turning right on Lariat, then left on Granite. That led me back to Wagner which led me back to my truck.

The trails were in remarkably good shape after the storm that hit the area on Wednesday evening. I didn't see much evidence of serious erosion, though it was obvious that the washes had flowed heavily for a time. I saw a significant amount of water in Granite Tank - probably the most I've ever seen in that tank.

I saw several mountain bikers early on and then one more out on Gooseneck. After that, I saw no one until I got back to the parking area. There, I saw Susan Davis, who used to hike with our group a number of years ago. She still comes to the park, but restricts herself to hiking the roads.

As I was driving out of the park, I saw a dump truck leaving after having dumped a load of sand (presumably from road cleanup) along the side of the park road near the entrance. Just outside the park, I saw other machines working on clearing the section of road where Shallmo Wash crosses the road. On Wednesday evening, I stopped to look at Shallmo Wash from the driveway connecting the Four Peaks / Horse Staging area with the main park road. It looked like a small but turbulent river.

Early morning run at the McDowell Mountain Regional Park. Wanted to do a loop (a lasso in reality) involving the Lariat Trail. Started from the Wagner TH right around 5:30. Still dark out, but it was a beautiful full moon and the trails out there are well established, rock free and fairly flat so no huge problems with trying to run out there. Also, I did have a headlamp to help with some of the dips involving washes. I took the Wagner to Granite to Lariat. It was 1.6 miles to the Lariat juncture. There I reset my garmin thinking that I would upload my route (the Lariat Trail) when I got home. When I got to where the Larait met the Pemberton I pulled out my garmin only to discover that my battery had died. :( Kind of annoying since I had plugged it in to charge the previous night. So to be honest my time is a guesstimate and my distance is based on what the maps said I did. I took the Pemberton west to where it connected to the Delsie and then took that back to the Granite Trail where I retraced my route back to the car. In the dark for the first half of the run...very cool! About half way through the Pemberton I was able to turn off the headlamp and run safely with the predawn light. Delsie is a sweet trail to run on, especially going north to south...almost entirely a gradual downhill slope. It made an old man feel young :) . Got back to the car just as the sun was creating the Superstitions. Traded places with some bikers early on in the dark, otherwise just saw 1 hiker as I was finishing. Temps were awesome, probably in the mid to upper 50's. Wildlife minimal...quail and rabbits. Heard coyotes howling far off in the distance with the coming sunrise.

Bob, Mike, Heather, Linda, Susan, and Marilyn joined me for a 9.6 mile hike in McDowell Mountain Region Park starting from the Wagner Trailhead. We hiked out and back on Wagner and part of Granite and, in the middle, did a loop consisting of Lariat, Pemberton, and Delsie.

Trail conditions were dry and all of the trails were in good condition.

We got to see the new shade structure near the Granite Tank, which is near the intersection of Pemberton, Delsie, and the connector trail that leads to the Gooseneck Trail in the Preserve. The previous structure had blown down during a storm in late December 2016. This one appears to be considerably stronger.

I saw a hawk while on the Lariat trail and several rabbits later on. We also encountered a number of mountain bikers doing early morning rides.

Bob, Mike, and I did an early morning loop in McDowell Mountain Regional Park. We hiked Pemberton, Lariat, Granite, Stoneman Wash, and returned on Pemberton for a hike that was slightly over 9 miles.

The desert is incredibly brown now. Aside from cactus flowers, we saw no other wildflowers.

I got a bunch of foxtail seeds in my socks while hiking in Stoneman Wash. I had some gaiters with me - I should have put them on.

62 bikers, 4 hikers. Of those, 37 bikers and 3 hikers were on the 2.4 mile Pemberton section, so only 25 bikers and 1 hiker the rest of the time
