Wife & I left home at 6:00 a.m. to avoid rush hour. Then, to kill time before dawn, I had a chicken-fried steak Grand Slam breakfast at Denny's in Fountain Hills. Many folks eat but don't exercise, some eat to exercise: I exercise to eat.

My plan was to hike a 7.0 mile loop -- a lasso if you count the first 250 feet -- of Tortoise, Wagner, Granite, Bluff, Stoneman Wash, and Pemberton Trails. It was drizzling as we arrived, but soon stopped. With an inch of rain the previous few days, I was hoping for flowers.

Tortoise Trail disabused me of that notion.

Wagner Trail had one brick red & darkening ocotillo. Scarey sign warning passers by not to wander near the maintenance yard, lest they get slapped with a class 2 misdemeanor.

Granite Trail had a small grotto of granite boulders. There’s a decrepit spring box next to the boulders. No flowers, but the clouds broke up enough I could see the mountains.

Bluff Trail would be a zippy downhill the direction I hiked it, away from the mountains.

Stoneman difficult, presumably for being sandy. Walking it was no problem. There’s guide posts, but it’s more a case of choose your own adventure. I’m glad I did. First, I found a nice cluster of penstemon. Further down, some beautiful saguaro.

When I arrived back at the Shallmo trailhead at noon, I was looking forward to a restorative ☘️ shake at Mickey D’s. Instead, my wife informed me that my SUV’s battery was dead. What a disaster. Suffice to say AI “customer service” is an abomination, and the bean counters who implement it deserve eternal fiery torture in the deepest pits of Gehenna.

I have a goal to visit all the major desert parks in Phoenix metro this year, so I went over to McDowell Regional Park today. I am sure that there are people who like hiking here, but I am not one of them. Don't get me wrong, I love this park- it is essential for connectivity in this area, and it is great for mountain biking and camping. The hiking is just so flat and boring though- and I get tired of stopping for bikes. I won't be back unless I am bringing my bike, or maybe going to take pictures of the skyline... there are some amazing views even from the lower elevation here.

I led a group of six through some of the washes at McDowell Mountain Regional Park.

The day started out cold - most of us wore gloves at the start of our hike.

We saw three owls several times as we made our way through one of the more canyon-like washes.

My wife and I did an afternoon loop in MMRP.

We started from the horse staging lot, walked across the main park road to the competitive track lot, and then hiked a short way on the Long Loop, then turned left onto a service road which we hiked for a couple of miles. Just before the rain gauge, we turned into Stoneman Wash. We followed the wash NW, crossing the Long Loop, eventually reaching Pemberton. From there we took Pemberton, Scenic, Cinch, and Escondido.

The wolfberries were very ripe and the one that I ate was quite tasty. If you get them prior to being ripe enough, they can be quite bitter.

We saw no one else in the washes that we hiked, but we saw a bunch of mountain bikers on the trails.

It was a nice afternoon in the park.

Mike, Nick, Bob, Sara, Kay, John, and Marilyn joined me for the Friday Morning Hike in McDowell Mountain Regional Park.

We hiked Tortoise, turned right on Pemberton and then turned right into the arroyos across the trail from the pond. We made our way up to Pemberton and then entered another wash prior to hitting the Bluff Trail. We followed this wash into Stoneman Wash where we hiked NW until we reached the Bluff Trail. We returned via Bluff, Granite, and Wagner.

Kay said that she saw an owl while we were in the arroyos, but I missed it. I did see a bunch of ravens though.

I was amazed at the amount of wolfberry bushes with fruit. Some of the fruit was quite large (for wolfberries).

When we weren't in the washes, we saw a bunch of other trail users, mainly mountain bikers.

A late afternoon / early evening loop in MMRP: I hiked a short section of the Long Loop followed by maybe a mile of service road, several miles in Stoneman Wash, then back on Pemberton, Scenic, Cinch, and Escondido.

I didn't encounter any other trail users until late in the hike when I saw two women riding their mountain bikes in the dark. There were a large number of vehicles in the competitive track lot when I returned - I think most of them were there for the women's night ride.

Another evening loop at MMRP: Technical Loop to service road, then service road to Stoneman/Pemberton Wash; south in wash, then west in feeder wash to Pemberton; finished via Pemberton, Scenic, Cinch, and Escondido.

I saw one rider on Pemberton and then, after sunset, a bunch of riders, about nine or so, all women, on Scenic.

The trails I hiked were in good condition, though some of the "shelf" that I used to ride (and hike) on the NW side of the trail through Stoneman Wash near the intersection w/ Granite is eroding away. Not a big deal because you can use the softer sand right next to it. It was easier to ride on that much firmer shelf though.

Starting from the competitive track lot, I hiked the Technical Loop, followed a service road to Stoneman Wash and then hiked south in the wash until a feeder wash brought me back to the Pemberton Trail. At that point, I walked a short ways on the Pemberton to the large tent that had been erected as a water / aid station for the upcoming Javelina Jundred race. After taking a look, I turned back on Pemberton and hiked to the first intersection with Scenic. I returned via Scenic, Cinch, and Escondido.

Stoneman Wash appeared to be recently scoured from a storm, perhaps as recently as yesterday. The ground was damp in spots and despite my best efforts to avoid it, clay stuck to my shoes. Parts of the Pemberton Trail seemed damp as well.

I didn't see any other trail users until I got to the Scenic Trail. There I encountered a hiker / mountain biker I know along with her companion; both women were riding mountain bikes and told me of a rattlesnake a short ways ahead. I looked, but didn't see a snake. A short while later, I saw a group of six or seven trail runners / hikers. My guess is that these folks are either competitors or support crew for the upcoming race.

There were more tents at the Four Peaks Trailhead, which is home base for the Javelina Jundred this year. The bigger tents near the start of the Escondido and Shallmo Wash Trails were lit up with bright lights. I saw two people there, though it's possible that there were others in some of the tents that I couldn't see into. There were also row upon row of smaller unlit tents at the edge of the lot.

Starting from the Competitive Track Parking Lot at MMRP, I started on the Long Loop, made my way into Stoneman/Pemberton Wash, returned to the Long Loop, found another wash, and eventually found myself on the Pemberton. I took the Pemberton to Scenic, then turned right on Cinch, and right again on Escondido. A walk through the Horse Staging Area and its driveway brought me back to the lot where I had parked.

Despite other vehicles in each of the parking areas (three total) that I walked through, I saw no one else on this hike.

I saw what I thought was a slow mouse or rat as I walked back on the driveway leading to/from the Horse Staging Area. It turned out to be a toad. I took a few photos - hopefully one of them will turn out...

It's definitely getting cooler. It may sound strange, but I miss the summer heat.

Mike and I hiked some washes for our Friday Morning Hike in MMRP...

Starting from the Four Peaks Trailhead, we crossed the road to the competitive track parking lot and then got on the Technical Loop. A service road took us to Stoneman/Pemberton Wash which we took southward. We headed west in one of Stoneman's larger feeder washes; we stayed in this wash as much as practical until we hit Pemberton. Pemberton and then Tonto Tank took us back to another of Stoneman's feeder washes. Stoneman took us back to the service road that we had hiked earlier in the day; but instead of backtracking on the service road, we took it east which led to the Sport Loop, which in turn returned us to the Comp Track parking lot.

We were rained on for part of our hike, but it was a light rain. It was just heavy enough that I didn't take any pictures during that segment.

We saw a few mountain bikers while we were out, but no one else.

While we were on the Pemberton, Mike spotted a chain fruit cholla which had some prickly pear paddles. We're not sure how this strange grafting came to be.

Heather, Linda, and I hiked an 11+ mile loop for our Friday hike in McDowell Mountain Regional Park.

Starting at the Trailhead Staging Area, we hiked Pemberton towards the "pond". We opted to skip visiting the pond - it's little more than a muddy watering hole. We continued on in some of the arroyos which eventually feed Stoneman Wash. We eventually crossed the Tonto Tank Trail and then made our way over to the Pemberton near the Bluff Trail. We hiked a short ways down Bluff Trail Wash and then took a turn into a wash which feeds this wash. Other washes took us back towards Stoneman though along the way, we visited an area with lots of granite boulders. We did eventually end up in Stoneman Wash and hiked NW towards Granite. We hiked back via the Granite, Wagner, and Tortoise trails.

We saw two rattlesnakes, one deer, at least one rabbit, quail, and lots of butterflies. I got a photo of the first snake and I may have gotten a photo of some of the butterflies. The second snake made its way into some nearby bushes too quickly for me to get a good photo. Likewise, I found the butterflies hard to photograph.

We also encountered numerous mylar balloons - I lost count, but it was at least half a dozen. We picked them up and disposed of them at the end.

The trails that we hiked were in good condition. It was fun hiking the washes too.

Marilyn and Bob joined me for the Friday morning hike in McDowell Mountain Regional Park.

We hiked Wagner, Granite, and Bluff, which led us to Stoneman Wash. We hiked parts of this wash and explored some of its tributaries. Return was via Granite and Wagner. These trails are in good condition. It was a pleasure hiking in the washes since recent rains have eliminated the horse churn often found in Stoneman. For the most part, the wash surfaces were reasonably firm and made for easy hiking.

We saw lots of butterflies and moths, a number of lizards, a javelina, a rattlesnake (probably Western Diamondback), a hawk, and an owl.

An MMRP night hike during which I saw a bunch of critters...

I did this loop: Escondido, Cinch, Scenic (long way), Pemberton, Stoneman, and back through the competitive track area via a service road.

At the beginning of my hike I saw a tortoise on Escondido. It was camera shy (or just scared) because it crawled into a bush. I got a shot of it, but the bush is obscuring it somewhat.

On Scenic, I think, I saw a white sphinx moth caterpillar. Later on, I saw all manner of moths, some of them may well have been of the white sphinx variety. These moths were so numerous and liked my headlamp so much that I ended up holding the lamp in my hand to keep the moths away from my face.

In Stoneman Wash, I missed my turn for the service road, but while looking for it, I came across a coiled up, probably sleeping, rattlesnake. Backtracking, I came across another one - it appeared to be smaller than the first.

Out of the wash, now on the service road, I saw several packrats, a scorpion, and another snake - perhaps a corral snake. I'll check the coloration when I take a look at the photos.

I also came across at least fifteen mountain bikers. The weather is getting nicer and they're coming out again. After seeing two lone riders while starting out, I saw a largish group prior to sunset on the Scenic Trail. The lead guys were going fast and were wearing arm and leg armor. Later on, after dark, on the Pemberton, I saw a women's group who were crossing Stoneman Wash.

It was a dark night; I had originally put my headlamp on so that the cyclists would see me, but once I started using it, my night vision was gone, so I kept it on when I entered Stoneman Wash. Good thing I did as there's a chance that I might have stepped on a snake had I not been using it.

Linda and I hiked about ten and a half miles for the Friday morning hike in MMRP.

Starting from the Horse Staging Area, we walked across the road to the competitive track area. We hiked the Technical Loop until it branched off to the Long Loop. We followed the Long Loop for a short ways and then turned into a narrow, but mostly brush-free wash. This wash fed into a very wide wash, the Stoneman/Pemberton Wash. We followed Stoneman west and then northwest, crossing the Long Loop. We continued in Stoneman for a while and then took a large feeder wash to the left. This wash crossed Pemberton - we stayed in the wash. We eventually exited the wash and noticed some canyon walls not far away. We found ourselves at the top of a small canyon which was fed by at least two drainages at the top. We looked at both of these drainages, but the way down was too steep to do without a rope; even with a rope, it's very loose. We found another nearby wash and started heading back, eventually reaching Pemberton.

We saw that the "pond" was nearby and went to look at it. It has water in it and is (slowly) being fed by a nearby
well/spring. It's not especially full, but the water level is higher than the last time I visited.

We made our way back to Stoneman/Pemberton Wash and took the service road back to the Sport Loop. We finished by going the "wrong way" on the Sport Loop.

We saw a bunch a quail and even an owl at one point.

The ground was soft from recent rain, but the trails were in surprisingly good shape. There was some erosion on the big hill (descent) after topping out on T-Bone ridge; it's fairly significant rut, perhaps six to eight inches deep in some spots. That said, I don't think it's be especially hard to avoid the rut when mountain biking.

Another evening hike in McDowell Mountain Regional Park...

Starting from the Competitive Track Parking Lot, I hiked the Technical Loop, turned right onto the Long Loop, and then turned left (east) onto Stoneman/Pemberton Wash. (According to the park map and even one sign, it's called Pemberton Wash in this part of the park, but AFAICT it's the same wash as the one named Stoneman elsewhere in the park.) I eventually rejoined the Long Loop, got back onto the Technical Loop and finished on the Tech Loop. The entire route made a very strange looking figure-8.

I picked up a mylar balloon while hiking the Technical Loop. I saw an owl in the wash and a large rabbit elsewhere.

Mine was the only vehicle in the lot when I got there and when I returned. I didn't see anyone else while hiking. The temperature was around 107 when I started and about 102 when I finished. As usual for these conditions, I filled my water reservoir with ice prior to adding water and an electrolyte solution. I also had over half of another reservoir available from Friday's hike, but did not need it.

An evening loop hike in MMRP...

Starting from the Competitive Track Parking Area, I hiked part of the Tech Loop, then took a service road to Stoneman Wash. I headed south until I got to the Long Loop. Another service road brought me to the Pemberton Trail which I took NNW to Scenic. Cinch to me to Escondido which brought be back to the 4 Peaks TH / Horse Staging Area.

It was warm when I started, about 106, but had cooled down to 98 when my daughter picked me up at the end.

I saw an owl early on in Stoneman Wash and then numerous smaller birds a short while later. I heard coyotes after sunset while hiking the Scenic Trail.

Six riders from a women's mountain biking group passed me shortly after hearing the coyotes on Scenic. Aside from those riders, I saw no one else on my hike, nor any vehicles in the Competitive Track lot when I started.

I took a few pictures along the way - don't know yet if any are worth posting.

For the Friday Hike at MMRP, Bob and I hiked a 10+ mile lasso starting from the Wagner Trailhead.

We hiked: Wagner, right on Granite, right on Delsie, left on Pemberton, left on Stoneman Wash, right on Granite, left on Bluff, left on Granite, right on Wagner. Without Wagner, this makes a long skinny loop which almost touches on Granite near the Stoneman intersection and the Delsie intersection - these aren't very far apart. It was nice though to do a route which didn't involve retracing our steps until we got back to Wagner.

We met a mountain biker at the top of Delsie. He had started from the bottom of the park and was planning on riding to Brown's Ranch! (Is there water at Brown's Ranch TH? He mentioned something about refilling water there.) He hadn't done this route yet and was wondering whether to turn right or left just after crossing into the Preserve. (I told him to stay left in order to get to Gooseneck. Otherwise you end up on Saguaro Nest.)

Bob and I saw an owl as we were hiking Delsie. I've been seeing a lot of owls lately.

We saw a few other mountain bikers too, but there weren't many of them today.

Another loop (with a short spur) hike in MMRP at night...

Long Loop to Stoneman / Pemberton Wash; NNW in Stoneman Wash to Pemberton; NE on Pemberton to Scenic; first right on Scenic, past Cinch, up the hill, along the ridge for a while, and then I turned around; back to Cinch, then Cinch to Escondido, to Horse Staging Area.

I saw an owl shortly after entering Stoneman Wash. There must have been other critters too, but I don't recall seeing any. Didn't see any mountain bikers either until the parking lot upon my return.

Another evening loop hike in McDowell Mountain Regional Park:

Starting from Competitive Track Parking Lot... Tech Loop to the service road, then down to Stoneman Wash, south down the wash, then northwest up one of the feeder washes. Northeast on Pemberton, through the Trailhead Staging Area, then right on the first intersection with Scenic. Down Scenic, then back on Cinch and through the horse staging area. Looking at my route on the map, it's a nice big loop with a few zig-zags at the beginning.

I saw a bunch of mountain bikers getting ready on the way out and I saw some more on the driveway to the main park road as I was finishing, but I didn't see anyone out on the trail - or in the wash either. (Like that would happen.)

Heard coyotes though several times on my hike. I saw an owl in Stoneman Wash as I was approaching it (again) on Pemberton. Saw at least one bunny and a lizard too, the latter when it was quite dark; thought it was a mouse or pack rat at first.

It was warm out, around 102 when I started, but it wasn't as humid as it's been in recent days, so it felt pretty good. Hardest part was at the very beginning where I had to do the hill leading to T-Bone Ridge on the Tech Loop.

There was a pretty sunset. Maybe one of my photos will turn out...

Another "wash day" for our Friday Hike in McDowell Mountain Regional Park...

Starting from the Four Peaks Trailhead (Horse Staging Area), we crossed the road, and then hiked the Technical Loop to the service road. The service road took us to Stoneman/Pemberton Wash where we went south for a while. One of Stoneman's feeder washes took us WNW for a number of miles. We eventually crossed Tonto Tank Trail and ended up in another wash which took us ESE, which eventually brought us back to the Tonto Tank Trail. We took Tonto Tank to Pemberton (which crossed Stoneman again) and then over to Shallmo Wash. For more washy goodness, we opted to hike in Shallmo Wash (proper) instead of on the trail of the same name. Shallmo Wash was especially loose and sandy; the other washes that we hiked earlier hadn't been churned up by horses and were relatively firm.

We picked up a number of balloons and other trash along the way.

We saw one rattlesnake, but it was somewhat camera shy.

We saw no other human trail users along the way, though for much of the hike we were in washes where it would be surprising to see anyone else.

I ran out of water in my 3 liter reservoir with about two miles to go. Thankfully, I still had a 40 oz bottle in my pack.
