I've been dying to take the gravel bike out to MMRP for a spin. Didn't want to brave the weekday cross town traffic, but the parks has events scheduled for the next few weekends, so today is the day! Did the Angry Coyote Loop (Cinch, Scenic, Pemberton, Escondido, Verde, Pemberton, Delsie, Bluff, Pemberton, Tonto Tank, Pemberton, Lower Shallmo Wash counter clockwise) and finished it off with a lap around the Sport Loop on the competitive track. The Aravaipa Running club is setting up for it Javelina Jundred race this weekend. Lots of bikers and hikers out on the trails this morning. It was a great ride on the Cutthroat.

First time at MMRP. Parked at the Four Peaks Staging Area around 530am - enough light from full moon and predawn sun to keep the headlamp in the car. Started on Shallmo Wash trail, connected with Pemberton and headed clockwise, kept a controlled, slow pace around 13 mins/mile. A few runners passed me, I passed a few. There was some pleasant sprinkles along miles 4 & 5, a rainbow came out to play after that, and the sunrise was spectacular. Things got dreary after that - there's only so many times I could stare at the surrounding mountains while tripping over rocks and dodging mountain bikes. While the plan was to do a full 18, taking one of the Scenic Trails back to the lot, I walked most of mile 14 and quit after 15.5 or so, walking the rest of the way. Something something humidity and ankle or something.

4 weeks left to Whiskey Row!

Did this 9.8 mile loop as a night hike back in June. Thought I would check it out during the day. Honestly, this is better as a night hike. Although it probably has some of the best views in the east side of the park, it's not really very interesting overall.

We started Friday morning pre-dawn, and encountered two hikers and one biker near the end of the hike.

I'll post the GPS route if anyone is interested in doing this as a loop.

Super nice run. Got ou to the TH just before 5:30. Surprisingly chilly when I first started...I wasn't expecting that. Also, I wasn't expecting the smoke. Living on the west side I hear about the fires, but that is about it. Fountain Hills is definitely experiencing the fires. Went in on Escondido (briefly) to get to the Cinch Trail. Good way to start, in that the Escondido is smooth and slightly down hill. And the Cinch is just the opposite....smooth and slightly uphill. There was a breeze coming in from the west so the air tasted clean and fresh. The Cinch connects to the Scenic Trail which I took CCW climbing the hill. Easy, gradual elevation change ....great for jogging, though a little rocky. Immediately started to smell the smoke as I climbed. The time up top lasted longer than I anticipated with several rolling hills taking me north. After descending connected quickly to the Pemberton. Took this clockwise (east). Pemberton is a super smooth track and was downhill and/or flat for the section I was on. Took the Shallmo Wash trail back to the TH. Name is a little deceiving since you don't hike in the wash. Actually a nice little trail, especially as you get in close to the hill. Because of the early morning I caught some "hill shade", which is always nice. Air quality sucked so I tried to control my breathing. Throat still felt alittle scratchy when I was done. Not too many people out...saw 1 hiker and 2 bikers. Wildlife...a couple of "peters" and "jacks"

On Friday, the 12th, I did a loop hike in MMRP starting from the Four Peaks Trailhead (formerly known as the Horse Staging Area). I hiked Escondido, Pemberton, and Scenic. I passed the intersection with Cinch, planning on going back to Pemberton and down Shallmo Wash. But it was starting to get warm, so I turned back and went down Cinch and back on Escondido.

I saw a few cyclists getting ready to ride at the parking lot, but saw no one else on the trails.

Trails were in good condition. Hiking was easy except for the heat; my GPS watch indicated a higher heart rate than I'd expect to see for the terrain and pace. I'm not as well acclimated as I was last summer.

An evening hike in MMRP...

I saw a few other trail users and might have gotten an okay dusk photo, but I haven't gotten around to looking at it yet.

Just one of my workout loops at MMRP. I started out just early enough that I only needed my headlamp for about the last third of the hike.

I led a group of six through some of the washes at McDowell Mountain Regional Park.

The day started out cold - most of us wore gloves at the start of our hike.

We saw three owls several times as we made our way through one of the more canyon-like washes.

My wife and I did an afternoon loop in MMRP.

We started from the horse staging lot, walked across the main park road to the competitive track lot, and then hiked a short way on the Long Loop, then turned left onto a service road which we hiked for a couple of miles. Just before the rain gauge, we turned into Stoneman Wash. We followed the wash NW, crossing the Long Loop, eventually reaching Pemberton. From there we took Pemberton, Scenic, Cinch, and Escondido.

The wolfberries were very ripe and the one that I ate was quite tasty. If you get them prior to being ripe enough, they can be quite bitter.

We saw no one else in the washes that we hiked, but we saw a bunch of mountain bikers on the trails.

It was a nice afternoon in the park.

I hiked a figure-8 route at MMRP - Shallmo Wash, Pemberton, right at the first intersection with Scenic, then around Scenic in its entirety and back to Pemberton where I turned left, Pemberton back to Scenic, Scenic to Cinch, Cinch to Escondido, and back in on Escondido.

As I was out earlier in the day, I saw more trail users than usual. I saw mountain bikers, other hikers, and trail runners.

A late afternoon / early evening loop in MMRP: I hiked a short section of the Long Loop followed by maybe a mile of service road, several miles in Stoneman Wash, then back on Pemberton, Scenic, Cinch, and Escondido.

I didn't encounter any other trail users until late in the hike when I saw two women riding their mountain bikes in the dark. There were a large number of vehicles in the competitive track lot when I returned - I think most of them were there for the women's night ride.

A ten mile lollipop in MMRP... Escondido, Cinch, Scenic, Pemberton, and back on Escondido.

I saw only three other trail users: a guy with his dog and another guy who passed me as I was taking photos of the sunset. I was a little surprised to not see any night riders - it would have been a good night for it.

There were just enough clouds to make for a colorful sunset; hopefully I got a photo which I'll like well enough to post. I wish I would have brought my tripod on this hike.

I didn't notice much dust while I was hiking, though a lot of the hike was in the dark... but when I got home, I found that my shoes, socks, and pant legs were very, very dusty, far more dusty than is normal. I think that the recent weekend events (Javelina Jundred, Ragnar, and then the equestrian endurance ride) have taken their toll on the trails. Aside from the dust, however, the trails seemed to be in reasonably good condition.

Another evening loop at MMRP: Technical Loop to service road, then service road to Stoneman/Pemberton Wash; south in wash, then west in feeder wash to Pemberton; finished via Pemberton, Scenic, Cinch, and Escondido.

I saw one rider on Pemberton and then, after sunset, a bunch of riders, about nine or so, all women, on Scenic.

The trails I hiked were in good condition, though some of the "shelf" that I used to ride (and hike) on the NW side of the trail through Stoneman Wash near the intersection w/ Granite is eroding away. Not a big deal because you can use the softer sand right next to it. It was easier to ride on that much firmer shelf though.

Another night hike at MMRP: Escondido, Cinch, Scenic, Pemberton, and back on Shallmo Wash.

The Javelina Jeadquarters were still being disassembled as I left Four Peaks Trailhead. There were still a few pieces of equipment there when I returned. I saw route markers along nearly my entire hike. The only section that wasn't marked was the last little bit of the Shallmo Wash Trail. It seems that the racers were routed into the actual wash for some reason.

I was passed by a pair of mountain bikers as I was returning on Shallmo Wash. Aside from them, I saw no other trail users.

My pack was slightly heavier tonight due to bringing along my tripod. I took a few shots from the Scenic Trail Ridgeline. It was nice to get exposure bracketed shots at the base ISO of the camera.

While hiking that ridgeline, I saw a number of small reflective dots (in addition to the Javelina Jundred signage). These turned out to be the eyes of birds, most of which flew away as I approached. One did not, however. I approached within about four feet and got a few photos (I hope). I was lucky that it didn't fly away as I fumbled with getting the camera back into the correct mode for shooting hand-held after tripod use.

Starting from the competitive track lot, I hiked the Technical Loop, followed a service road to Stoneman Wash and then hiked south in the wash until a feeder wash brought me back to the Pemberton Trail. At that point, I walked a short ways on the Pemberton to the large tent that had been erected as a water / aid station for the upcoming Javelina Jundred race. After taking a look, I turned back on Pemberton and hiked to the first intersection with Scenic. I returned via Scenic, Cinch, and Escondido.

Stoneman Wash appeared to be recently scoured from a storm, perhaps as recently as yesterday. The ground was damp in spots and despite my best efforts to avoid it, clay stuck to my shoes. Parts of the Pemberton Trail seemed damp as well.

I didn't see any other trail users until I got to the Scenic Trail. There I encountered a hiker / mountain biker I know along with her companion; both women were riding mountain bikes and told me of a rattlesnake a short ways ahead. I looked, but didn't see a snake. A short while later, I saw a group of six or seven trail runners / hikers. My guess is that these folks are either competitors or support crew for the upcoming race.

There were more tents at the Four Peaks Trailhead, which is home base for the Javelina Jundred this year. The bigger tents near the start of the Escondido and Shallmo Wash Trails were lit up with bright lights. I saw two people there, though it's possible that there were others in some of the tents that I couldn't see into. There were also row upon row of smaller unlit tents at the edge of the lot.

Another later afternoon / early evening loop hike in MMRP: Escondido, Cinch, Scenic (long way), Pemberton, and back on Shallmo Wash.

I saw large tents and the start/finish line for the Javelina Jundred as I hiked through the Four Peaks Trailhead.

I encountered just one trail runner on my hike; I saw him as I was finishing the Scenic Trail.

Later on, when I was maybe a third of the way down Shallmo Wash, I came across a rattlesnake lying across the trail. Perhaps half a mile after that, I saw a very active pack rat hopping around, and scrambling for cover as I approached with my light.

Starting from the Competitive Track Parking Lot at MMRP, I started on the Long Loop, made my way into Stoneman/Pemberton Wash, returned to the Long Loop, found another wash, and eventually found myself on the Pemberton. I took the Pemberton to Scenic, then turned right on Cinch, and right again on Escondido. A walk through the Horse Staging Area and its driveway brought me back to the lot where I had parked.

Despite other vehicles in each of the parking areas (three total) that I walked through, I saw no one else on this hike.

I saw what I thought was a slow mouse or rat as I walked back on the driveway leading to/from the Horse Staging Area. It turned out to be a toad. I took a few photos - hopefully one of them will turn out...

It's definitely getting cooler. It may sound strange, but I miss the summer heat.

Starting from the Four Peaks TH in MMRP, I hiked: Escondido, Cinch, Scenic (long way), Pemberton, and Shallmo Wash.

The evening was cool, at least compared to what I've been accustomed to. I one trail runner, but no mountain bikers.

I also saw a tarantula and a number of mice and/or pack rats. I saw one of these mice run into an improbably small hole. It was a small mouse though and fit without issue.
