Return trip to Gila Box to look for my lost hiking pole.
Found it where I left it 4 days earlier.
Drove to the end of the road and hiked up the river a bit and tubed it back down.
Fun!

We took a friend out to Gila Box who had never been before.
Spent the day with just short hikes out to all our favorite sites.

Bonita Creek - Out and back along Pipeline road to the water station. Showed our friend some rock art, beaver dams and had 2 young coaties run along the pipeline just above us.

Watchable Wildlife Platform - Walked out for the views over Bonita Canyon.

Serna Cabin - Down to the cabin and river for some history.

Riverview Campground - Parked at Site #1 and hiked down to the Gila River at Castle Rock. Swimming, good conversation and a bit of the Cottonwood Trail before returning back.

Last stop on the drive out was a visit to Spring Canyon.

It was a good full day at The Box!
Our friend was impressed with the whole area.
There were promises made to come back and see more of the area.
Fun day with fun people!

Started from an almost full Riverview campground.
Counter clock loop on the Cottonwood trail.
Side trip out to the wildlife platform.
Watched a wild turkey trot across the trail, first one I have ever seen in this low desert area!
Along the way I made 2 short side trips down to the river.
I was dressed for November, but it got warm and the river had a good flow with pools so
... I had myself a nice swim in my underoos.
I ended my hike at the well known native artifact/ruins site for a walk around.
Always an enjoyable area to visit anytime of the year!

108 with no monsoon relief in sight.
We gave up our hike day for a swim day.
Parked at Riverview and hit up 3 favorite swimming holes.
Gila river is flowing low, but just perfect for swimming and soaking in the water for relief.
Water temps were perfect with a clear blue sky and big hot sunshine.
Was a good choice for the day, Thanks AS for taking me!

Amazing place to wander in December!
Spent the afternoon just hitting up many of my favorite spots.
The Gila River & Bonita Creek are flowing heavy.
Dry Canyon boat take out is closed due to river flooding and I didn't even attempt hiking up Pipeline Road at Bonita due to the creek flow.
I mostly just hiked to overlooks to watch the water and spent a little time down in Bonita Canyon for the December colors.
Cottonwoods are 50/50 and the sycamores are there, everything else is a mix ... beautiful everywhere.
I think a return visit will be made in a week for that Pipeline Road segment.
An afternoon well spent in the Box!

105 today
Headed down to The Box for my first Gila River swim of the year.
Parked at Riverview and had the whole place to myself.
Hiked down to my 2 favorite swim holes for a soak.
The river is low right now, but there were still plenty of swim pools to cool off.
The water was perfect and it was fun hiking straight down the middle of the river to each hole.
Along the way were screeching hawks and hundreds of baby frogs lining the banks.
Many more swims to come down there this year!
:D

I never get tired of these trips out to Gila Box!
I formed a loop hitting all of the Cottonwood Trail and a little of everything else.
Lot's of side river visits along the way for a swim that never happened.
Temps never reached what was predicted, cool breeze all afternoon & overcast.
Spotted the only big wildlife up Bonita Canyon and what a good one! I spooked a Golden Eagle out of a cottonwood and watched it fly to the other side of the canyon. Only the 3rd one I've ever seen (all in Bonita) IMO these are more magnificent than the baldies.
Also saw my first gopher snake of the year, he acted just like a rattler hissing & striking at my camera.
Great day ... I'll get that first swim in next trip.

My last trip with Jayden (for now) before she moves away.
It had to be a good one ... Gila Box! One of my favorite areas in all of AZ.

Monday - Drove out to and set up camp at Riverview Site #1
Hiking, river swimming, campfire, conversation, laughs, stars, guitar & ukulele for day 1.

Tuesday - Bonita Creek hike, creek swim then back down to the Gila for a last river swim to end day 2.

Wonderful overnight camp trip, Thank You Jayden!
Happy trails my friend until we meet again :lone:

One of my hiking diet staples.
Did the complete Cottonwood Trail including a few off-trail paths down to the river. A few flowers here & there and the cottonwoods are filling in nicely, but the whole area still has that pre-spring look.
Sunset was watched in a van down by the river before leaving.
Will always be back ...

Putting this under swimming as that was the main objective today.
I did hike to a couple different swim holes and a bit of the Cottonwood trail, but soaking in the Gila was the pleasure today on this 100+ sunny day.
Farmers have now taken about all the Gila's water along Safford so Gila Box is where to find it now.
Parked at Riverview and hiked down to "Castle Rock" were the water flow was perfect, some deep pools to soak in with just enough flow to keep it cool, but not sweep you away.
While soaking I saw a - flycatcher, robin, harris hawk, heron & several vultures high above.
Nice break from the norm today!

Overnight road/hiking/camping trip into Graham/Greenlee county's Black Hills.
First stop Guthrie Peak - Covered in poppies, quite the sight, many people pulled over along 191 taking pics.
Rockhound Area - Not as many poppies as Guthrie, but still many big patches.
Gila Box - Lots of wildflowers starting along the road in.
Cottonwood Trail - Many wildflowers throughout.
Riverview - Home for the night, site #5 was my choice. Campsites were all full of wildflowers.
The Gila River down below was flowing strong with chocolate color water and overflowing in many places.
Excellent poppy show this year, good amount of wildflowers in Gila Box and lots of green coming in ..... and it's only gonna get better!

Hiked around Riverview, Serna Cabin & the Watchable Platform at Gila Box.
Ended with a short one up Bonita Creek.
Sat on a perch over the Gila River for coffee & sunset.
Good trip today!

The goal for this brief camping trip was to dust off the gear and finally do my first overnighter of the year, plus hopefully get to meet some of the folks from the Arizona Wilderness Coalition who were there for a Meetup event. I am not a member, but specifically wanted to meet Jonathan from Portal to see if he had any new information on the woman who went missing at Rustler Park in 2015. When I arrived at the campground late Friday afternoon there was only one other camper, so I picked a spot to my liking, then headed off to do some photography before it got dark.

Back at camp, I set up the tent while I still had some light, then relaxed in the dark enjoying some brews and watching the sky for signs of storm development. There was some lightning off to the northwest, but nothing was happening nearby. It remained quiet the entire night. About 9:00 a car drove in and headed right up to my camp. I had two lights on, so they must be looking for someone I figured. I asked if they were with the AWC, and they said yes; they were looking for Jonathan, who was supposed to already be here. So, it turns out the other camper was who we were looking for. They headed over to set up at his spot, and I walked over, got to hang out with some new folks and talk with Jonathan as hoped. :)

I didn't camp another night like they did, nor join them on their hikes, partly because of some ongoing physical limitations, plus I wanted to get back to Tucson Saturday, so I could be home for the anticipated storm event (that turned out great :D ).

Autumn hiking Bonita with visiting friends

Started with Pipeline Road to the end then back. Autumn colors were better than expected and the creek looked wonderful, My friends were very impressed with their first trip up the canyon. 2 beautiful bighorn ladies were spotted up high along the way.
Then it was back to Riverview CG where Dave & Kathy have been camped for the last couple days. Took a little rest break before setting back out for a short afternooner down to the Gila River and the "Castle Rock" view. We then looped back up along the Cottonwood Trail to Riverview at sunset for dinner, campfire & conversation.

All good things ended with goodbyes, one more night of camping for them and one dark drive back home for me.
Good day spent with great friends in a most favorite place .....

Wanted to get one more trip in at the Box before hunting season starts.
Payed for a site at Riverview CG to park and decide later on an overnight camp.
First up was a visit down to "Castle Rock" along the Gila River. Then a bit on the Cottonwood Trail ending at the Serna Cabin area. Went a bit up Bonita Creek then back down along the River Trail. Sunset was had at the Wildlife Platform before returning back to my campsite.
No big wildlife today, but lots of butterflies & dragonflies with still a good number of flowers left.
Gila was flowing strong, Bonita Creek was not.
Autumn colors 'bout 25% turning.
The weather was warm tonight so I opted out of a campfire/overnight stay and returned home.
Love Gila Box ..... wish I could live down there ..... I've asked ..... BLM said No ..... :pk:

Recent conversation with the Riverview CG hosts convinced me it was time to head up this canyon I've always looked at with curiosity, but had always just put on the "some day" list.
Entrance requires a Gila River crossing and with the water flow low right now and the still cool morning temps, today was a good day to add that check mark. Started from Riverview and although the river flow is low right now, that crossing was still a tad "adventurous"! Made it across, changed into my hiking shoes and after some desert maze fun ..... I entered Midnight.
Wow ..... what a most unexpected canyon delight it was! Incredible formations, narrows, towering walls & geology like I've never seen before. The geodes, chalcedony & fire agate deposits found in many areas had this rockhounder in a state of shock! Hiked in about 2.5 miles before turning back after a side canyon lunch. On the way out, climbed up to check out a big alcove and took a bee sting to the forehead. First bee sting I've received in about 10 years and by the end of the day I had a golf ball in my forehead lol ..... little pumpkin!
After Midnight I hiked a mile up into Rail End Canyon located just to the south for a look. This canyon was more open and not at all as interesting as it's big brother to the north, one & done I believe on Rail End Canyon.
One more Gila River crossing brought me back to Riverview at Noon and with the temps getting warm I called it a day at Gila Box.
This one has most definitely made my yearly rotation list at Gila Box. Wonderful scenic hike, amazing canyon and maybe a little prehistoric gem along the way :-$
