Took the fat bike over to EMRP for a ride this morning. Parked at Navy and crossed the street to Horseshoe trail over to the Rodeo Grounds and picked up Butterfield, then clockwise on Gadsden, Desert Rose to the service road to catch the end of the Competitive Track Long Loop, took the road from the Comp Track to the Desert Rose trailhead, up the hill and back to Gadsden, southwest to Coldwater to the Rodeo Grounds and Horseshoe back to the parking area. Sun was hot on my back this morning. Saw a pair of bike riders on Gadsden, 3 hikers on Toothaker at the Rodeo Grounds, and 4 trail runners on Desert Rose. Trails were all in good shape. Super tired when I got back to the van. Entrance station was unmanned again today. MCSO was on patrol when I was pulling in at 7am.

Got a late start, 6:45. Nice cloud cover felt cool, but not for long! Parked at the Rodeo Grounds and did a clockwise loop, tiny bit on Toothaker to Butterfield, Gadsden, out and back on Desert Rose (cactus down across trail at the top), Gadsden, Coldwater back to Rodeo Grounds. I was thinking of taking Toothaker back, but I was tired and it was getting hot. Saw 3 bikers, including my Bagel buddy Ken G on Desert Rose.

Pretty warm this morning, like 79 degrees at 6:30 in the Estrella Mountain Regional Park Rodeo Grounds parking lot. Nice cloud cover and a stiff breeze kept the temps manageable. From the trailhead, took the short connector over to Gadsden, then Desert Rose to the PIR parking lot and back, Gadsden to Flycatcher back to Gadsden, Butterfield UP to Dysart to Toothaker and back to the parking lot. Saw 7 hikers and 3 bikers. Kept the pace reasonable and did lots of climbing. Made it up the crazy steep tech section on Butterfield, big grins! First ride on new Fox MTB shoes.

Midmorning hike in the Estrellas. It’s been awhile since I’ve hit the trails so it was nice to come back with an easy trail. It’s harder and harder to get these legs ambulating. I did an out and back on the Desert Rose. There was a steady incline negotiating the hill, but after that it was fairly flat. Great weather! Steady breeze. No wildlife. Met one biker when I was heading back.

Did Long Loop to Mountain Pass with an extra side of Desert Rose to spice it up at the end. Only saw one other biker and that was on my way back up Desert Rose.

NASCAR weekend at PIR! Parked at the ERMP Rodeo Grounds and did a clockwise loop on Butterfield, Gadsden, Desert Rose, Flycatcher, and return on Gadsden and Butterfield. Acres upon acres of RVs. Rode around the camping area a bit while I was at the bottom of Desert Rose. Looks like everyone was having a good time, myself included!

Great ride with the Bagel Bunch this morning. Started at the Estrella Regional Park rodeo grounds where a park ranger was just setting off to lead a hike. Took Toothaker out to Dysart, Butterfield south to Gadsden, out and back on Desert Rose to PIR, back on Gadsden to Butterfield and finished back at the rodeo grounds. Lots of bikers and hikers out on the trails this cloud covered morning.

Early morning hike in the Estrellas. Went to the competitive track TH (just to the west of the racetrack) to do the Desert Rose trail. This is the most convenient and direct access for this trail. Right after you pass the pay station, the parking for this TH is just to the right in a huge dirt lot. The sign for the trail is at the far south end of the lot. The trail starts off by going up and over a mountain. This may seem daunting, but the elevation grade is very gradual and you only gain several hundred feet. With the exception of 4-5 washes, the trail is fairly flat after the mountain. This trail has been around for 5+ years, but it feels very rough. Compared to other trails it seems obvious that it doesn’t see too much traffic. Made it to the end of the trail where it connects to the Gadsden and turned around. Managed to do most of this trail pre-sunrise or in the shadows of the mountain, which made it very pleasant. No wildlife and no other users. Quite the contrast from the day before, where we were dodging bikes at the Sonoran North Preserve.

(This trail is part of the Maricopa Loop Trail System. When you start the trail, there is a sign indicating this. I was surprised to note about 1.5 miles in that the trail intersected a service road and this service road had a Maricopa Loop trail sign, making it seem like the Maricopa trail followed the service road. I don’t think that is the case, but it seems like an odd spot to place a trail sign if it wasn’t the case).

I put the mountain in Monday this morning at Estrella Mountain Regional Park. Been riding there for over 3 years and just finally hit Desert Rose trail, the last on the list! I was feeling great this morning and just kept riding and riding and riding!

One of my current projects is to hike or bike all 240 miles of the Maricopa Trail. My other current projects are the Black Canyon Trail and General Crook Trail, plus the C&O Canal Towpath (in Maryland). I hope to also complete the General Crook Trail in 2024, and the other three trails in 2023. We shall see ...

I started behind the visitors' center, along the packed gravel path, past the mosaics. The final mosaic is a compass set in the ground. Right is to the desert tortoise enclosure. Go left to the Quail Trail, which starts past the portapotty & picnic table, across the access road.

The highlight of Quail Trail is just off trail to the right: Behind a corrugated metal tank, are the ruins of what I believe is a camp site, not a ranch. I say camp site because there is a grill, barbecue and short retaining wall (with no foundation). There are two small cement bolt supports, but no indication what they once held. Amongst it all is some rock art, though nothing as extensive as Sundad.

The rodeo arena -- which was there a year ago -- is gone. There are no more fences, bleachers or horses for rent. Nothing except the restroom building. (Which is the cleanest trailhead facility I’ve ever been in.)

Gadsden Trail has seen numerous small mountain bike-optimized reroutes since I first hiked it over a decade ago. Where new track intersects old, there is always some sort of sign indicating which way to go.

When I started hiking the temps were in the 30s, but I was generating enough body heat I was never uncomfortable. (Which sure beats the -19℉ at Mormon Lake.) 🥶

Small planes were flying overhead all morning — they apparently use the stone X as a navigation aid — but what really get my attention was the loud roar of F-35s at Luke Air Force Base, 12 miles away. I’ve heard the F-35s as far away as North Mountain!

Not sure why Maricopa County trail planners didn’t take advantage of the straight shot to PIR. Instead, Desert Rose Trail is switchbacked up a 240 ft. hill.

I’ve been trying to do more hikes wearing a Camelbak, rather than carrying hiking poles and carrying a full pack, and it paid off today: I was able to hike from Estrella Mountain Regional Park to Phoenix International Raceway in a quite speedy 3.26 mph.

Belated post. After work hike. Started from the Desert Rose TH at the competitive track area for the Estrellas. (This is just west of PIR). This was a a rough one. The trail is not too rough. There is a minor climb early on, but it is fairly flat after that. I didn't really feel like doing this, but I dragged myself out there. Remember it being warm out this day and that it seemed to sap me more than usual. Managed to jog to the end of the trail where it ends with the Gadsden. On the return trip I ended up just hiking. No wildlife and didn't see anyone while I was out there.

Early morning jog. Full docket this weekend so I needed something close to home and short. I had done a part of the Desert Rose back in November, but time constraints forced me to cut it short before I was able to finish the trail. Today I headed back out to the TH, which is just adjacent to the competitive track (near PIR). Got started around 8am, which I guess rally isn't that early. Uneventful run. Nice, gradual climb to start off the trail and then a gradual descent on the west side. This is the majority of the elevation for this trail. Though there are some minor hills and washes over the following 2 miles. The views are "eh"' but the Estrellas offer some tempting views of what they might offer. However, much of what is visible, I believe is tribal land. So the Estrellas are like a forbidden candy. The Desert Trail is fairly boring after the climb. It traverses some washes and does some long sweeping curves as it connects to the Gadsden. Pretty sure this trail was designed for the Purpose of being part of the Maricopa Trail, so it is more of a functional trail than a scenic trail. Had the trail to myself, but I noticed that the competitive track was hopping today. Saw 30 cars there this morning. Which is easily more cars than I've seen in all my previous visits. Weather was beautiful. No wildlife.

After linner jog. After a 3 course meal at Ruby Tuesday's (love their salad bar!) I went on an unplanned hike with family. They only wanted to walk around the block. I talked them in to going to the nearby trail Desert Rose which I hadn't done yet. They were good for 20 minutes but gave me 40 minutes to do what I could. Started from the east TH, near the ISM Speedway (formerly PIR). Family walked and I started jogging. Let me say that running, or in this case jogging, on a full stomach is less than pleasant. Felt rather nauseous trying to maintain a pace as I climbed to the saddle. The elevation change is not profound but it is steady for the first half mile. However, once I reached the saddle it was all down hill and then flat after that. My stomach seemed ok with that. Got in about 2.2 miles before having to turn around. On the way back I utilized an ATV track I noticed earlier that shaved off some time and distance on the return trip. Did not get the whole trail, but I got most of it. Besides family, I only saw 1 biker while I was out. No wildlife.

1st trip
With the Steelers on a bye week, I had the opportunity to get out for a Sunday hike, which for some football seasons can be rare. Over a year ago I noticed that a new trail was built in the Estrella county park. This finally seemed like the best time to get out there. The temperatures are finally cool enough now to enjoy a 10+ mile hike without being drained and dehydrated by the end of it.

There was a 30% chance of rain for the day, but that wouldn’t happen until the evening. I started before 6am, with just enough daylight to not need a headlamp. It was cooler, but not chilly. The temperature seemed to be roughly the same all morning, maybe even cooling a little. The winds picked up at times, which helped keep everything pleasant. The clouds near the horizon kept the shade around a bit longer, but once the sun got high enough, the direct daylight was all around.

I started from the rodeo area of Estrella park and took the Coldwater Trail south, left on the Butterfield Trail, then left on the Gadsden Trail, and finally left again onto the Desert Rose Trail. It was an out and back hike to PIR. There’s lots of fuzzy green grass that’s a result of all the recent rain. Some hills seem greener than others, but it does look nicer. The clouds made for nice scenery and cast some nice shadows across the mountains.

Saw only 3 bikers and no other hikers. On the east end of the Desert Rose Trail, it connects with the competitive track, which to my understanding is only for the bikers. It’s the only time I’ve ever seen the hiking trails actually connect to the competitive tracks, which are usually completely separate in other county parks. The track/(trails) actually looked pretty nice and possibly a pleasant hike. They seemed to go thru the hills and terrain a bit more, so the hiking and the scenery might be a bit more interesting.

It had been 3 weeks since my last hike and probably since the summer since I had to charge a battery for my camera. When I went to take my first picture, I found out that the battery and the backup battery were both dead. Luckily the phone camera was suitable enough for anything you’re likely to encounter in a local county park.

This hike brings my total mileage for this year the most I’ve posted on HAZ. I may have exceeded this mileage in years prior when I hiked pretty much every Sunday, but it probably wasn’t by much. Still have a few more months to go, so I’ll see how much I can get in a good year.
