Another one of our usual routes.
Had a breeze so 73-89° seemed fine. (to me, anyway)

7 am start made for slightly warmer temps: 86-95° F
Felt much nicer going downhill on Scorpion than when doing loop CW.

Out early enough for temps to stay 78-90° F
Slight variation from the route we used in April.

Both of us felt pretty wiped out from yesterday so we decided to skip it today. But after doing a bit of gardening at home under an overcast sky Tracey said it didn't feel that hot, so we set off for a late, our usual, close-to-home loop.
Being a Sunday I expected more mountain-bikers but there weren't that many, probably 'cuz the early-birds were already done with their rides.

On the first part with calm winds the humidity made itself known but once turning West onto Scorpion Alley the breeze picked up and with a continued overcast it actually felt quite pleasant, so on this day 88° to 92° was ok.

Quick, early, very humid hike with temps 81-87° F

Met/passed by over a dozen mountain bikers (50/50 on E-Bikes) ranging from expert to scared to even be ON a bike... two gals appeared to be on their first ride with shiny new bikes. A guy with them appeared to be their minder/guide, although not seeming to 'mind' much.

Traffic on Bush Highway @ 8 am already busy along with the usual idiots... one guy appearing to do a 5 point (couldn't do it in less?) turn-around in a spot where the predominant traffic had a poor line-of-sight. Somehow made it without getting hit, or other vehicles being rear-ended while slowing.

A quick early loop to beat the temps. Humid but breezy kept it reasonable. Encountered no bikers, or hikers, just how we like it. Ok, so Tracey also likes a no rattlesnakes hike as well.

Started from the ATV TH on Usery Pass Road and took Lance's Trail south to Scorpion Alley, then went on that about halfway and came back on Wild Horse, or some unmarked trail. Lots of target shooters at the NRA Pit. A biker early on asked me what I thought about them shooting there. I said I thought of it the same way as why I don't go anywhere on Labor Day weekend, there's always the one idiot that messes it up for everyone. I kept away from that area as best as I could along Lance's Trail. By the time it started to heat up a little, there wasn't much shooting.

only saw bikers, no other hikers. Traffic got lighter as the weather got warmer, but since I finished before 9:30am, it really wasn't that hot.

Ran my second 50 miler this weekend. Had a good day overall

first 13 miles were easy and i soaked in some smooth running. after that the route went out of the park and into much rougher territory for a while including some off trail through bulldog canyon and some rough, steep and rocky jeep roads. was still feeling pretty good at this point.

miles 21-25 were sandy uphill roads but i still managed to run some of it.

after the 25 aid station we entered the Hawes trail network. i ran some, struggled some and passed some people.

i was able to see Michelle and Sierra at the mile 34 aid station and that really helped because i hit that at a low point mentally and physically and was also dehydrated. they gave me a much needed tune-up and out i went.

the next 10 miles were the hardest of the day for me. lot of uphill, physically wasted and battling demons - really the reason why i was there lol. did pass some more people.

the dude at the mile 44 aid station was a life saver. he got me on track with electrolytes, food and positivity. the last part of the route was the hardest, climbing up pass mountain trail then dropping down the rocky way in the dark, but this was one of my best stretches of the day. i ran quite a bit of the uphill and hit the high point at sunset - which was lovely. also i love running in the dark so i did pretty well from there on to the end.

really a stellar weather day, could not have asked for more. Happy to have another one of these under my belt. Feel pretty good about this one. oh one last thing, my right arch hurt for every single step of the way.

As muggy as it was, I began with no plan... just start with my usual route and play-it-by-ear (by sweat?) and see how it goes. If it gets too oppressive I always have a number of bail-out options available.

To ward off the worst of the heat and humidity I had 2 ice-cold quart bottles on my bike, a 100 oz ice-cold bladder in my backpack and my skull cap, balaclava and gloves were all soaked in ice-cold water. On the hose from the backpack is a squeeze nozzle which allows me to refresh everything with a fresh squirt of ice-cold water as needed.

I started at the Phon D Sutton staging lot and headed west to join the Lower Salt River Nature Trail, follow it toward the Phon D Sutton Recreation Site, southeast across the road near the cattle guard and follow the equestrian trail back to the lot where I began.

Only a half-hour in and I'm still feeling chill so I kept going east along old horse trails to Coon Bluff Road, crossed Bush Highway, connected with the Bush Lite East Trail, followed it to Scorpion Trail where I crossed Bush Highway again, followed the horse trail along the fence line almost to the Salt River Tubing parking lot, angled northwest, crossed the road and headed over to my favorite spot... a nice spot overlooking the Salt River near the Foxtail Admin site.

After a few photos, grabbing a quick snack and emptying the first bottle (which after an hour of biking at 98° was still cool) I started back, checking out the last of three pair of Nighthawk eggs I'd found on previous trips along the way.
(The two other pair have since hatched and the chicks are now gone as well, which I've included in the last photo of the photoset showing the other two pair before hatching and a few days later as hatched chicks.)

I retraced my route back to Scorpion Trail, which I followed 'up' (hill) to Scorpion Alley Trail, with the intention to complete my usual route north on Stinger East, east on Bush lite East before crossing over Bush Highway again (4th time) at Coon Bluff Road to finally return on the horse trails to the start.

However... I'm just over 90 minutes into the ride and I still have half of the second bottle with semi-cool water so I thought, 'where should I go to add another half-hour or so?' which got me to thinking. Then I remembered @DarthStiller posting a 'Big Sister Trail' triplog and I had yet to bike (or even hike) it since it was completed, so why not? (I'll second-guess that decision shortly)

So I headed over on Bush Lite West to Wild Horse, to Twisted Sister which I followed up to the entry point for Big Sister. The 350' climb in about a mile became quite a slog as by now I'm sweating through-and-through and thought, 'what was I thinking!? after all I knew Big Sister is a downhill-only trail so it HAD to start higher up. By time I reached Big Sister I was down to my lowest gear and barely moving.

However! Now that I reached Big Sister all was right with the world... and let the downhill begin. Of course, at my age I can't be taking anything I haven't even seen before at full speed so I took it easy... to start, anyway. But of course as I got into the hang of how it flowed I gradually picked up the speed, just enough a few times I gave myself a bit of a scare and slowed slightly.

I found I really liked this trail... if only I didn't have to ride up Twisted Sister so far to enjoy the downhill more often. But then I rarely ride on this part of the Hawes Trails due to so many bikers hitting up the newer trails. I'm fine if I don't see another biker whenever I ride. Which was today... of course it's likely nobody else was out at midday due to this heat and humidity. But I survived just fine with a good quart of still-cold water in the backpack... and an ice-cold cooler in the car.

Good thing I had my GoPro with me to video my first ride on the Big Sister Trail.

Started from the west end of the newly built Bush Lite Trail, where a small parking area is, and hiked it all the way to the east end. I was also wanting to hike the loop portion of it in the middle, but it looks like that part hasn't been completed yet. From the east end of Bush Lite, I hiked the Scorpion Trail south, then Scorpion Alley west and did part of the Stinger Loop. On the way back to the parking lot, I found what looks like the southern half of the Bush Lite Loop Trail. It was very faint and wasn't completely in line with what the map shows as proposed. Finished up with just over 10 miles.

Saw only bikers, and there weren't very many of them. The weather starting out was actually cool, and never really got hot. The humidity made up for that, though. Very nice to see everything so green at this time of year.

Returned to Hawes with Carey to hit up some of the trails on the north side. Parked on Power road and took the connector to High Horse, Scorpion, Scorpion alley, Stinger Loop East, and finished the loop on Wild Horse. Perfect day. Awesome trails. Lots of bikers and hikers out on the trails enjoying the holiday weekend.

Early run on a cool morning. Expanded my flip-flop-lasso double-figure-eight route to incorporate a regular run out to two separate Salt River overlooks. On the way back from one of the overlooks I spotted a reasonably healthy-looking coyote who didn't bother to pose for a picture.

Nearing the end I cruised through the Coon Bluff Recreation Area then headed back out parallel with the road along an equestrian trail, which used to be a wild horse trail this side of the road but no more.

Just as I turned back onto the road I spotted a Galaxy Note 8 cell phone laying in the dirt next to the road. Although the screen was so dark I could hardly see what was on the screen, after pushing a few buttons I could vaguely see "Natalie's Phone" and a green circle labeled "Call owner of phone", which I did.

Natalie lived within a few miles of me so I said I'd drop it off on my way home. She called back and said to meet at a Chase Bank where she had gone to get cash to give me a finders' reward because she was so grateful "my LIFE is on that phone!"
Word to the (un)wise... have a backup!

I said I'd meet her there but don't bother with any reward, I'm happy to get it back to the rightful owner. (which hasn't been the case for two previous phones I've found)

All's well that ends well I guess.
