Opted for a fairly local, but good workout, hike this morning. Forty minute, easy drive, from the house. Remembered to use bug spray this time, since it seems like there are always mosquitoes around the trailhead. Headed up Talache-Blacktail Trail. Steep climb for the firat two miles, seemed to be in slightly better shape than last year. Nice breeze, but very humid.

Once at the ridge, I turned right and made the easy walk over to the summit of Blacktail. Good views. Lots of bees, but they weren’t interested in me. Once done, I headed north on the trail, over Butler (not much of a summit) and down the north side of the mountain. Gradual descent at first, then steep.

I had hoped to have time today to complete the entire Talache trail, but at the intersection, decided it wasn’t in the cards today, so stayed left and headed up to the summit of 4326. Steep and rocky trail up. Saw two dirtbikers, they were friendly. The summit is broad and devoid of trees, with excellent views in all directions. Took some pics, enjoyed the breeze, then retraced my steps back out.

The climb back up and over Butler was another sweatfest, but then the final descent was easy, albeit rocky. Saw one slug, a few butterflies, and nothing else. Good hike for the mileage, and always a local favorite of mine.

Good variety of flowers along most of the hike.

As expected, Hike A for the day was thwarted by snow covered roads. Not just a little snow, but pretty much a snowbank above 5000', so I turned around and headed elsewhere. Wasn't really thrilled with my Hike B option, so ended up at Hike C.

I've hiked the first half of Talache-Blacktail trail many times, but have never taken it beyond Butler Mtn. I knew the Forest map of the trail route was crap, but I didn't have a whole lot of other info. The original plan was to hike the full length of Talache-Blacktail from the Maiden Rock TH up and over to the other end near Talache, and then back.

Got started around 0930 and headed uphill. Wyatt and I were just on this trail this past Sunday, but I was solo today. Headed up the steep ascent to the ridge, then north on the ridge towards Butler Mtn, keeping an eye out for the trail supposedly veering right and down Bimetallic Ridge. I've been thru here before and never noticed that supposed turn, and it's unlikely I would miss a turn that many times, which was why I suspected the maps were wrong. Once again, no turn spotted, even after careful attention, so I figured at some point the trail had been rerouted.

Continuing off the north end of the ridge and down the north face of Butler Mtn was all new territory for me. Pleasant hike downhill, although I knew I would have to regain all that lost elevation on the way back out. Partway down the hill, I spotted Peak 4326 ahead of me, looked at the map, and decided to abandon my initial thoughts of finding the end of Talache-Blacktail and opt for the Peak ahead of me. Eventually, almost near the saddle, the trail split sharply. I strongly suspect the right fork is the continuation of Talache-Blacktail (nowhere near the route shown on maps), but having given up on that objective, I took the left fork towards Peak 4326.

After a short, very steep climb up to the summit, I topped out on the nearly treeless peak, and was greeted by incredible views in all directions. Well worth the last minute change in plans. The summit was broad and flat, with a few rocks to sit on and a couple of fire rings. After taking way too many pictures, I headed back down. Coming down that steep rocky slope was tedious, but I stayed mostly in the dirt off the side of the trail to avoid the worst of the loose rock. Once off that short section, the trail was fine as I reclimbed over Butler Mtn. On the way back down, I made the short side trip to Blacktail Mtn again, despite just being there on Sunday. The small patches of snow from a few days ago are already gone.

After Blacktail, it was a steep descent back to the trailhead. Started raining with about a quarter mile to go. Saw nobody else all day, but did see one deer and one turkey. As I've said before, the trails in this area would be some of my go-to workout hikes during the warmer months.

I had originally planned this hike for next week, but since today was rainy, I opted for this one since I knew the road and trail would be fine in not so great weather.

Got started just before 0800 to light rain, but with minimal breeze and temps around fifty, it felt nice. The trail heads uphill right away, and is an unrelenting 1600’ gain over the next two miles. Muddy, but in good shape. The rain stayed mostly light on our way uphill. Once we reached the ridgeline, it was a little breezy, but not bad.

Took a right onto the spur trail and headed over to Blacktail mountain first. Easy walk along the ridge to the summit, which had no views today due to the rain and fog. Ordinarily, this summit has great views to the east and west, but I knew today wouldn’t have that. Still a nice summit though. There were a few patches of snow left on the ridge, but they’ll be gone soon.

Once back on the main trail, we continued along the ridge over to Butler Mountain. Butler is not much beyond a bump to the left of the trail in a meadow. Views are limited to the meadow, but it’s an easy walk to Butler once you are on the ridge, so it’s worth doing if you want a peak.

We retraced our steps back down to the trailhead, making sure not to slip on the muddy trail. Footing was generally okay, but having a pole helped. The rain tapered off about a half mile from the end, but started again as we finished.

This was a good choice for today’s weather. Saw two turkeys, but nothing else. Zero other people, although there were five other vehicles at the trailhead; they were likely on Maiden Rock trail, which has the same starting point.

Continuous flowers along the entire trail. Will likely be a good showing in a few weeks.

Cool and breezy when we got to the trailhead. The first thing we noticed was a Husky running around, but no owner. Mystery was quickly solved when we noticed laminated signs posted in two places with a picture of the same dog and a note from the owner explaining that they lived nearby and the dog likes to visit with hikers—basically it’s the trailhead host.

Got started up the Talache-Blacktail Trail. Steep and rocky, but easy to follow. Tons of switchbacks for the first mile, then the views opened up a bit. Steeper for the second mile up to the saddle. Cool temps in the 50’s were perfect for staying cool during the climb.

At the saddle, we took the right fork and headed south to Blacktail Mtn, which is less than 1/4 mile away. Mostly flat walk over to it, with a little uphill of about 20’ to the summit. The summit was clear and had great views. We had a snack break and rested, then headed back down to the saddle.

From the saddle, we took the left fork north to Butler Mtn, about 3/4 mile away. Again, mostly flat, with a small climb up to Butler. We crossed paths with the same dog again, while she was escorting another hiker. Butler is more vague as a peak, but when we got to a small clearing, we left the trail and walked about 30’ over to the highest spot. It was littered with rocks painted yellow, and I’m guessing that used to be a cairn marking the summit. No views, and no places to sit, so we headed back down. Timberline in this area seems to hover around 5000’, as I’ve noticed the trees get significantly smaller or disappear around this elevation.

From the saddle, we headed back downhill. Steep hike back down, with some slippery spots in the rocks, but nothing too bad. Once again, the dog greeted us at the trailhead and the kids played with her for a few minutes. Fun hike, and the kids want to hike Blacktail Mtn again.
