This may not sound like the best of places....unless you like golf (which I don't) but, it just so happens that this resort is nestled in the hills of Tuscon Mountain Park. I could literally see the Starr Pass TH from my patio window. That makes it a "star" resort in my mind. Got up early Saturday morning to do a run utilizing this TH. Never hiked from here before so I wasn't sure what to expect. Luckily, there was a detailed trail map at the TH so I was able to compose a route on the spot. Went in on the Rock Wren which is a sweet trail to run on. A little rocky with some mild elevation change, but nothing overtly challenging. From here I hopped on the Little Cat Trail. Short, (about 1 mile long), with minimal elevation change. Some "in and outs" following the contours of the hills. No rockier than any of the other trails, but I had three "trips" in this mile stretch. Did not lead to any falls, but annoying. Briefly took the Explorer trail to connect to the Starr Pass trail. Took Starr Pass trail back to where it junctured with the Rock Wren. Starr Pass kind of a boring trail. Fairly straight and flat until the end when it climbs to connect to the Rock Wren. This last stretch (the climb) is a new reroute...dirt was still freshly turned. I could hear bikers talking excitedly about trying it out. Nice loop for a run. Saw a deer early on, but otherwise no wildlife. Amazed at how much greener these mountains are compared to Phoenix! Disappointed when I got back to the room and discovered that there was no trail description to log my run under, so..... |
