A few years back, some friends accidently ended up on top of Sugarloaf Mountain after making the mistake of putting the wrong person in charge of navigation. Someone proposed intentionally climbing the mountain, and as I had missed the previous adventure, I decided to join.

Intentionally climbing the mountain means you can make a more informed decision as to which approach to take, and we chose the southwest ridge. This worked out pretty well most of the way up, although the last 200 feet or so was quite steep and involved some hanging onto things. Once on the top, it was a straightforward trek over to the east end of the mountain, where the best view can be found.

On the way down, I thought it would be nice to go around that steep section, so I started down a crease just to the east. The path of least resistance took me to the top of a long scree field, which looked a little sketchy, but turned out to be very stable. This is probably the best route in retrospect.

Once down to Trail 252, we proceeded east to make a loop. There was still water in Limestone Spring.

Finally crossed this one off the list, it was fun! Once you leave the trail it gets very steep quickly. You have to be careful because everything moves under your feet, it's very rocky and brush and cactus. I used Bob's route and it worked great. The views up there are very nice!

I took an easier(more friendly) route this time. Started around 9am, the weather was really nice and the views up top were first rate. Having a hiking pole was great for the way down. Enjoyable day!

I had a noon turnaround time and a minute later I headed back to my vehicle. Lessons learned, I'll need more than 3 hrs.,long pants, and one hiking pole. Sugarloaf attempt was fun. The ridgeline you aren't on always looks better until you are on it. I forgot how much I liked this area. Luckily, I was able to find 2 dollar bills,2 quarters and 5 dimes. I didn't cry today, but I could have if I wanted to.

I decided to start the New Year off with a bang by going deep into @LosDosSloFolks country and hike up to Sugarloaf Mountain. This was the last remaining "major" peak in the Spur Cross area that I had not summited.

I started out by going CW on the Spur Cross Loop hike. When I got to the Limestone Trail, instead of turning right I continued to the left for a short distance before following a social trail that led to Peterson Spring. This trail was well cairned and mostly easy to follow.

However, past Peterson Spring it was a total bushwhack as I either lost the use trail or it did not continue past the spring. I could see a ridgeline in the distance that went up the north slope of Sugarloaf, so that is what I aimed for. I had to go through a couple of ravines to get there. Once on the ridgeline it was a matter of heading north up the slope. It was steep but not too bad. There was a false summit up ahead, and I was happy to go around it rather than try to climb it. Once around the left side of the false summit, a ridgeline going to the true summit came into view. Once on the ridgeline, it was a fairly easy hike to the summit.

To this point, I had mostly followed the route than @hansenaz used when he summited Sugarloaf Mountain. However, he had descended down the south slope of the mountain, and I had reviewed topo maps and had already decided that descent would be too steep for my liking. So I went back north on the ridgeline for a bit, and then descended down the east side of the mountain. It was somewhat steep, but not too bad. After dropping 400 feet or so I continued the descent by looping around to the SE and then basically south once I had mostly descended the mountain. It was not the greatest off-trail travel, but I eventually made it back to the Limestone Trail, right at the springbox for Limestone Spring. From there I headed SE to the Spur Cross Trail, and took it back to the TH.

I was glad to finally get atop Sugarloaf, but the off-trail portion of this hike was a bit onerous, so I don't think that I'll do this one again anytime real soon. At least it was good practice for some other off-trail hikes that I am thinking of doing: Apache Peaks, Mount Glenn, and Coyote Mountain.

I didn't have a firm plan as I drove toward Spur Cross but by the time I got there I thought maybe I'd head toward the top of Elephant Mountain.

I stopped at a couple ruin sites along the way and decided to take the "2nd left" (i.e. not the first one marked "EM trail"). I was enjoying the walk (except for the vast clouds of gnats) but noticed after a while I was heading away from Elephant Mountain. I studied the GPS map for a couple minutes and realized I had branched off the main trail and was heading up a creek toward the Black Mesa-Sugarloaf saddle. It was a decent trail, plenty of cairns, so I just kept going.

The trail led to a nice spring (Peterson Spring?) and after that I bushwacked up to the saddle. The saddle is a nice spot but it was a slow, ugly grind up the backside of Sugarloaf. There were two good cairns on top but I didn't find a register. I continued east to the far edge of Sugarloaf - descent here looked steep and unappealing - but retracing my way up was too. So I did a "5 wheel skid" down the SE side, starting in a gully but then exiting right. Slow and ugly.

I was happy to intersect Tr#252 and took that loop back to the car.

Can't recommend this one but I was glad to get outside and I won't have to wonder what the top of Sugarloaf is like anymore.
