Wally, Preston and I had talked about putting the LOST trail segments together and hiking from the old tunnel to Picketpost trailhead. Today was the day. We dropped a car off at Picketpost and drove to the old tunnel and began from there. Great temps and overcast albeit windy at the tunnel.
Wally led while Preston told us about the history of the area with old photos. Very cool. Pinal City sounds like it was an interesting place.
Of course Wally found some pot sherds! LoL
Each section was unique in its own way !
Nice amount of water in Arnett among the cottonwoods with flowers here and there!
Trails were in good shape with a half a dozen creek crossings. Preston treated us to burgers at Porters Saloon to finish off the outing. Thank you!!
A very fun outing! Thanks to Preston and Wally for making it happen. Like HAZ, they rock!!

After hiking almost 20 miles on Saturday, why not add a few more Sunday just to loosen up. This hike had my name on it (lost), so I was in. Denny & Preston had the beta so all I needed to do was walk. The terrain changed from old road to downtown to desert trail to creek crossings with water. The Arnett Creek section was nicest part and the weather cooperated keeping it cool. Preston had photos and stories to go along with the Pinal City area. A fun day out on the trail. Thanks to Denny for driving and Preston for Lunch at Porters Saloon.

Denny and Wally and I had been talking about doing the entire Legends of Superior Trails (LOST) system for a while, and it was worth the wait. Met up at Picketpost trailhead on a windy and cool morning. Left my truck there and Denny drove us to the east end of the LOST at Queen Creek Tunnel. Off into the wind tunnel canyon and down the winding old highway to the floor of Queen Creek. We then walked through downtown Superior, crossed the bridge over Queen Creek at Porters Saloon, and then followed the creek and rolling hills into the site of Pinal City ghost town west of Superior. I broke out my photo collection and gave a quick tour of “downtown” Pinal City before we crossed Queen Creek to continue our journey. Once in Arnett Canyon we cruised westward through my favorite segment of LOST, complete with poppies and lots of water. Saw date palms and a dead cow and calf :sk: as we neared the end of the hike. Capped off a great day with lunch at Porters Saloon. Great day! Thanks guys! :)

This hike was much better than I expected it to be. The views make it surprisingly better than you would expect, but the running water in Queen Creek and the clouds and cooler temps made it even more pleasant.

This basically the old highway from Superior to Miami/Globe. The historical nature of it and the nice views as you ascend more than make up for the fact that it's mostly hiking on a degraded asphalt road. The trail ends just on the other side of the tunnel by the traffic pulloff. At the top I found a climbers' trail called Atlantis. Not sure how long it goes or exactly where, but it was cool to find that. From the north side of the 60, more water was cascading down the hill to the culverts under the highway and into Queen Creek Canyon. Very cool to see all this in motion. High up there the temperature were very cool and breezy.

The sun came out on the way down, lighting up the canyon and areas to the south that were hit by the fire in June. Funny that the last time I was there just 2 months ago it was on fire and now it already looks very green.

Once I got back to the Magma Ave TH, I headed down the last segment of the LOST through downtown Superior. That goes about a half mile, then cuts across Queen Creek again and follows it. There is a bridge to cross in the downtown area. About a mile or so lat the trail crosses the creek again, but that time my luck ran out. while the flow had visibly let up from early in the morning, it was still too swift and deep at this crossing for me to make it across without getting my feet drenched and maybe even loosing footing. I decided to cut the hike short a couple miles and head back. The mix of the sun, vegetation and humidity made that an easier decision that it would normally have been otherwise.

The entire hike the sound of running water was everywhere. Very nice to experience that in August in the desert.

I was just here a week ago , tried to “hike” the town center portion of the LOST and missed the correct turn for the end of this section and had to jog across Rt. 60 near Main St. to the Circle K, fortunately on the way back through town I stopped at Felicia’s Ice Cream Shop and picked up a Cuban sandwich, best I’ve had since moving from Florida! Lured by this and unfinished business decided to return today. The LOST trail map was recently put online and substantial changes from the older and unfinished previous plan. Several times I tried to hike to Superior looking for the LOST to spur off the AZT near Hewitt Station Rd. to enter Superior, appears this plan had been abandoned before completion. I wasn’t aware until I arrived today , it was the day the Yavapai running club were holding their Copper Corridor runs, 12 to 50 km courses, it was soon evident by the finish line banner on Main St.. The LOST ,Legends of Superior Trail, is now divided into 5 segments west to east,Arnett Canyon, Pinal City Panther, Miners and Ranchers, Superior Town Center and Queen Creek Canyon, I parked at the Magma Avenue Trail Head which just since last week has had fill dirt placed eliminating the potholes and some widening done. Started by crossing the concrete bridge with element 29 immediately on the right heading uphill to the beginning of Main St. Quite an eclectic collection of buildings along here , I was distracted some by the plaques beside each one describing prior tenants , at least on Saturdays the town has a lively vibe, open cafes ,live music and a farmers market. After last week I verified that to remain on this unsigned town portion of the LOST turn left at Porters Saloon down the concrete steps which you then walk through the saloon ,to the sound of live music, and reach the pedestrian bridge across a dry Queen Creek. Once at the bottom of the bridge you have completed the town center segment and are beginning the miners and ranchers segment. Not sure about the decision to name it this in my opinion it’s the suburbs of Superior section, however evident on this section of the trail, really the whole trail to Picketpost Trail Head is testimony to the excellent work done by the American Conservation Experience who provided the muscle to create an obviously good enough trail to race on. The trail from here on was festooned with ribbons hanging on various vegetation for the racers to stay on course which made the trail quite colorful. With only 400 allowed in the race they were pretty spread out over the 30 miles ,never saw more than three at once, I was the only hiker on the trail today and made sure to give way even though these trails are double wide. This section of the trail goes under the Rt. 60 overpass for Queen Creek , after this some rooftops and barking dogs accompany you. Once I reached Panther Drive trail gate this section was complete. Turning right maybe 50 yards on Panther I could see the obvious trail on the left and here starts the Pinal City Panther segment. On this section a fair distance of walking is adjacent to the Superior Airport , no jet noise today. Despite the nice breeze it felt a bit warm through this shadeless stretch gradually bending southwest , now Picketpost Mountain is growing larger as you proceed down toward Queen Creek. A fording of the creek would have taken me toward Arnett Canyon but I ended the route by heading up to the Pinal City old mill ruin. After rummaging around a bit I did decide to head over to get a picture of the ore wagon tracks before turning back, that added another mile. Passed by a few runners still on the trail that I offered words of encouragement to, also kept a bottle of water in reserve in case I came across anyone in need. Of course I had to stop by and get another sandwich on the way back, FYI some of the establishments are cash only. This trail has potential to log a good number of miles if you start at Picket Post, include the Picketpost circumference and then finish at the Clayppol tunnel without a painful amount of AEG.
