Took a friend of mine out to Lower La Barge Box, first trip out there for her. It's still such a magical place, I could have stayed there all day! Decided to take Linda Ann's route from back in 2021 and start out of First Water, taking Second Water Trail down to Boulder Canyon. We then took the Battleship cut off up to the top of the saddle and down the other side to the box. The trail is in great shape up and down the saddle. Spent a good amount of time in the box and then it was a slow boulder hop along La Barge Creek, over to the Indian Paint Mine, then a long hot hike back up Second Water to the TH. Came across a couple backpackers and a few groups heading into the box, but not as many as I thought. I hadn't hiked in a couple weeks so it was good to get back out there and the Lower La Barge Box is always worth the effort it requires.

This one was John's plan but I was at least reasonably intrigued as the last time I tried to do the upper loop I got flashed out by post-fire mud flow. Having never hiked out via the lower creek, I penciled that in for the day as well.

It was insanely cold and windy to start as we took 103 up the hill. Dropping down to the creek we dodged water all the way upstream to Cavalry -- save for one poor choice -- before cutting across to Boulder Canyon. Here we saw our only people on the day, a group of likely human traffickers in town for the game, though the girls did not blink twice when we prompted them to, so on we went.

We cut the corner taking the short stretch along Boulder before meeting up with La Barge again. Any attempts to stay dry ended here, but it was an absolutely great stretch of canyon, and one I'm sorry its taken so long for me to explore. I'll be back!

After a short break at the lake, we pieced together some use trails up to 103 and back to the car for the typically annoying 88 drive back to AJ. Great day!

I've explored Boulder Canyon 103 from Canyon Lake and from Second Water more times than I can count. While the views of Canyon Lake, Battleship Mountain, and Weaver's Needle are impressive, this is old news to me at this point.

In past years I've also explored Boulder Canyon along the western flank of the Battleship. But I have never explored the eastern side of the Battleship which follows La Barge Canyon. Today I decided to give this a shot.

Although La Barge Canyon shows as a trail on the All Trails app—and the number of footprints in the sand attests to it's use as a trail—it is not an official Forest Service trail. There is plenty of boulder hopping and some light scrambling. There were a couple of points on the hike up the canyon where I almost turned around and gave up. I'm glad I didn't. I kept exploring, studying the rocks, and problem solving. I always managed to find a navigable path up and over the boulders.

At 1.3 miles in, my efforts paid off and I was rewarded with views of the La Barge Box Pool. All along the canyon were pools of standing water, but the Box Pool was nice and full. This water feature is flanked by impressive canyon walls and a thin, delicate rock needle.

At the Box Pool the trail takes a sharp 90-degree turn. There is a large, shady tree (ironwood?) with a campsite underneath. The trail leaves the creek bed and appears to be normal dirt track again. This would wrap around the backside of the Battleship and eventually join Boulder Canyon Trail 103, effectively making it a 'lollipop' loop hike. Taking the Boulder Canyon route would add at least 1.5 miles to my hike. I was at the midpoint for daylight, and I had drank more water than expected. Additionally, I wondered at the trail condition, especially on the backside of the Battleship. Would it be overgrown? Difficult to follow? I opted to return the way I came via La Barge Canyon.

The hike out of La Barge was surprisingly easier than the hike in. The scrambles and boulder hops didn't seem as intimidating, and I was back at the junction for Boulder Canyon within an hour. I enjoyed reflecting pools of water, fall color, and cliff views on the way out of La Barge.

We started out planning to do the 9 mile out & back but turned around short of our goal. We were part of the way in La Barge Creek but decided to turn around due to all the rock hopping knowing we had a climb to get back out. I found out that evening I had some kind of stomach ailment which sapped my energy.

The hike was of course gorgeous and there were quite a few other hikers enjoying the beautiful weather and scenery.

Don and I wanted to take a semi easy hike in the Superstions. So we headed out. Ended up walking up Boulder Creek and split off on La Barge. 2 miles of boulder hoppin, bushwackin, choke pools and jungle. Instead of looping around the Indian Paint mine, we crossed over the the #103. Change of scenery, little bit of up and down, but no more boulders. Phew. 7.4 miles and 1900 AEG. Another great adventure with my love ♥

Got to the First Water TH just before 0800 and headed out. Breezy, but not particularly cool. Some fire damage along the first couple miles of Second Water trail, but it didn't seem all that bad to me. The route up Boulder Canyon was well cairned and easy to follow. Headed over the saddle at the south end of Battleship and down to La Barge. Steep and rocky in a few places, but also not bad. Some pools of water in La Barge Box, where we stopped for a snack. After that, we continued north until reaching Boulder Canyon again. Mostly well cairned, but some route finding to avoid the worst of the boulders and vegetation. No real water to speak of, so at least that made travel easier. It was getting warm by the time we looped back around to Second Water, and the hike back out was toasty at times. Only saw a few people all day, plus three horses, and coyote. Heard a dog barking while we were snacking, but never saw it. Good day!

Delivered on my promise to @LindaAnn to not get lost and that she would get see her children again :D Started at First Water which still had plenty of parking at 0800, first time visiting Garden Valley since last year, not great but not as depressing as expected. Linda spotted a coyote coming toward us until it was aware of us and then rocketed away. Came across a headless batting helmet and jacket at the Black Mesa junction :-k . Second water trail still has it’s ankle rolling rocks as you descend , it went by quickly with entertaining conversation. Headed south on Boulder Creek easy to negotiate the crossings since dry. The route up toward the stern of Battleship now has plentiful cairns. Dropped down into LaBarge Box with some pools of water but obviously lower than the high tide mark. Took a break where it looked boulderly painful to continue on, as we snacked we were circled by a couple of hikers whom we couldn’t help with directions to rainbow falls? After exiting the box came the slow going part of figuring out the route through the maze of boulders and catclaw . Once down lower with the sheer cliffs above us it was easier going until finally being made aware of the approaching Boulder Canyon Trail by the presence of horse riders. Up to the paint mine where there were two others there ,only others we saw today until back at the trailhead, Linda pointed out a couple of prospects she had dropped into before “just because they were there “, fortunately skipped that today. Back up second water trail seemed like the breeze had disappeared and the sun intensity increased. Failed on a couple of sun block stop requests but managed to score a shoelace tightening break , one of us doesn’t use iron shoelaces :D From there uneventful return to the trailhead capping off another great day in the Superstitions.

La Barge has been on my radar for quite a while. Pulled the trigger today. Never been to La Barge but I have hiked in the surrounding area, though it has been a while....too long, in fact. Left Canyon Lake Th around 6:30. Dark enough that I started off with a headlamp. By the time I reached the top of the hill it was light enough that I had the light off. Didn’t want to be burdened with the lamp so,I decided to hide it under a bush off trail. (Took me 20 minutes to find the dumb thing on my return ](*,) . Swore I had the right bush, but it was underneath its brother 20 feet up the trail). After the climb of the hill, I really enjoyed Boulder Canyon trail. Great views and I like how the trail plays with the higher elevation. The descent into the canyon is not much fun (down or up). Loose rocks being the biggest annoyance.

Sometimes my reading comprehension isn’t as sharp as I would like it to be. Such was the case with this hike. Now having done it and rereading the description, it is crystal clear. But to be honest I was a little unsure going in. A passing hiker was kind enough to help orient me on my intentions and I was off heading up La Barge Canyon. This is literally a rock hoppers delight. My shoes seldom touched soil as I made way up the dry wash. Alas, there was no running water, though there was evidence of where the water had flowed in previous days. La Barge’s Box was pretty sweet. Seeing pictures prior to hiking it took away some of the “wow” impact, but it was still an amazing sight. There were several pools in the box with water trickling amongst them. It made preceding past this point rather challenging as I had to scale the north wall. Little dicey, but doable. Moving further up the wash there were 3 other instances where vehicle sized boulders made progressing a challenge - a fun challenge. As I was going up the wash I spied 2 big horns showcasing their “mad foot skills” on the rocks above me. Awesome seeing them in their natural environment. Made it into the area where the wash became somewhat choked with trees, before turning around. I’m guessing Calvary trail may have only been a few bends in the wash away..... Going back down the wash wasn’t quite as challenging, except in the box where the water was :o . Right before the box there an obvious campsite and from there a trail that leads up an over the saddle just south of Battleship Mountain. Followed this trail to the saddle where there is a “Y”; one branch leads up to Battleship, the other heads down and connects to Boulder Canyon. From there took Boulder Canyon trail back to the TH. Climb out wasn’t as bad as I thought, even with the loose rocks. Perfect day for this hike.

I wanted to test rain gear for a forthcoming two week long hike I'm doing back east this Spring. It's hard to do that here in AZ, so when the forecast came in I made plans for a weekend in the Supes. Started at Canyon Lake on Saturday. I really enjoy the Boulder Canyon hike to La Barge. It's steep, but the trail conditions are great and I encountered a lot of enthusiastic day-hikers along the way. I had not been intending to do the La Barge Box, but I've been dealing with a repetitive use injury lately and decided to go lighter on the miles.

It's been maybe 12 years since I last hiked the La Barge Box, and I regret it immensely. It's so pretty back there. While the area approaching the Cavalry trail connection is a bit overgrown, enough folks do the hike and have cut back the growth that it's manageable without too much hassle. I took Cavalry to Dutchman and then cameled up at Charlebois Spring, which is looking magnificent. Ended up camping a bit back on Dutchman in a nice flat site. I turned in early to await the rain, which started at 9:00 p.m. and continued intermittently all night. Finally!

The next morning I took Bull Pass to Boulder and then went up Battleship, which was a treat. Someone had camped in the saddle between La Barge and Cavalry and looked quite content. Unfortunately, lighting came in (and too close!) before I completed the ascent, so I beat a fast retreat off the ridge. Better luck next time. It rained on and off for the rest of my time on Boulder, though I got to the car in partial sun.

The upshot was that the rain gear did well, though I didn't do a great job of securing my pack liner. Lessons learned. A wonderful short trip and a much needed rain. Thank you, Weather Gods!

Decided to give the western Supes some love and check out a place I've been wanting to see for awhile, Lower La Barge Box. Started from the Canyon Lake TH and headed up the Boulder Canyon Trail. Not hiking on the western side for a bit, I had forgotten how rocky it is. Nice climb for the first couple miles then down into the creek bed. Then the fun boulder hop/climb the rest of the way to the box. Definitely was easier without any water and there were some good footprints that I followed hoping it was the least amount of effort way. The box is very impressive, why have I waited this long to see it?? Walked the length of the box, then propped myself against a rock, took my shoes and socks off and relaxed by one of the pools for a good 30 minutes. I had the box to myself which was a bit surprising for a Sunday. Passed by several groups on the climb out but not a soul anywhere near the box. It amazes me to see the amount of people hiking up Boulder Canyon trail with little to no water. ](*,)

My son and I set off from the Canyon Lake Marina just before 7 am. The “in” gate to the marina doesn’t open till 8 am, but entering through the exit gets you to the parking area.

Temps were a little chilly, but the 700 ft climb right out of the gate gets the blood pumping.

By the time we crested the initial hill, the coming dawn opened up a nice view back toward the lake with a pinkish hue on the northwestern horizon.

At the Indian paint mine, we ran into our first company—a couple of guys who were planning to hit up the Battleship. We informed them they missed their turn. We told them we were headed there, but they could also circle back on the LaBarge side. They decided to head that direction, and we parted ways.

From the paint mine to the second water trail junction was the coldest section of the hike. We still hadn’t seen the sun but were anxious to meet it past the second water junction.

About 1/4 mile before the turn up to Battleship, we met a couple more hikers who were backtracking in the opposite direction—also headed to Battleship and thinking they had missed the optimal turn up. I told them they were welcome to try their luck wherever, but suggested that the easier routes still lay further down a bit. They were convinced and trailed us to our chosen turn up—which incidentally is somewhat before the one reflected on the official HAZ route.

We were happy with our choice, which ended up being a pretty clear and well cairned route.

Clambering across the spine turned out to involve a bit more scrambling than I had recalled, but was a lot of fun.

We made it to the summit and had it to ourselves for 15 minutes or so until our trailing hikers arrived. After a bit though, we could see that Battleship was shaping up to be a popular destination on the day—with several groups making their way across the spine.

After backtracking across the spine, we swung east and dropped down into the LaBarge drainage. This was a section I hadn’t previously hiked, and it was the gem of the trip for me. The route down to the Box was clear and didn’t require any bushwhacking.

At the entrance to the Box was a large pool of water next to a fantastic camping spot. The shaded pool was a perfect reflection pond for the west-facing cliff face that was drenched in afternoon sun. We took lots of pictures and had a great time exploring up the Box. Lots of pools and plenty of water for filtering. What a cool area—definitely exceeded my expectations.

After taking in our fill of the Box, we tackled the northbound route through LaBarge. This involved a little bushwhacking, and boulder hopping, but again was more tame than anticipated.

Once we reconnected with the actual trail, we cruised back to the trailhead.

Turned out to be another great day in the Supes.

Beautfful hiking weather. Started at 7:15am with temps in the low 40's, sunny and no wind. Met up with Todd and Sarah and hiked to the Box. The creek was bone dry, the whole way. The pools in the Box have water, but it is very low and murky. Didn't matter. This is a great destination hike and the Box looks impressive no matter what. The lack of water, actually made travel easier. We spent a good hour just relaxing in the Box, eating lunch and enjoying the views.

Started at Boulder Canyon th by Canyon Lake. Stopped at the creek and returned. Big flow in the creek. I didn't navigate any creek-crossings, but they would have been through fast moving current.

Catching up on the past few weeks. A fun day exploring a loop of Lower La Barge Canyon to Boulder Canyon trail. First time in La Barge to the box and through to Calavry. It certainly has become an overgrown mess past the box, but made or all the more adventure. La Barge is truly amazing, would love to try upper La Barge soon (just another thing to add to my list). This canyon is truly spectacular, would almost like to visit after some rain soon to see how much water gets back in there! Did not see any one till we ran into some groups headed towards Battleship.

Started at Canyon Lake TH on the Boulder Canyon trail. Threw on the headlamp and was on my feet at 6am. The first 3 and last 3 miles of the out and back route are all hiking trail. The middle 3 are a boulder-hopping and bushwhacking off-trail adventure.

Once I reached the canyon bottom, it was a water oasis. Plenty of clear water rushing through boulders and dropping over short falls. I took my time and enjoyed the sights and sounds all the way to the Box. No one else out there. The campsite was empty.

Returned the same way and finally came across the first group of people who had hiked the trail down to the water's edge then stopped. Once I was back on the trail, they just kept coming. More people on this trail than I have ever seen on it before. Hustled back down the trail and reached my car at 11:25am.

Been wanting to get over to the box, and with >2 inches of rain the day before, it seemed like a great time to go.

Decided to hike out and back from First Water TH. Took Second Water Trail to Boulder Canyon Trail, then up and over to La Barge Box on the south side of Battleship Mountain.

Reading up beforehand, it sounds like most people get there by hiking up from Canyon Lake, but I found this out-and-back route very modest and enjoyable.

So much water everywhere! Great to see.

I estimate the hike was about 5 miles each way (unless someone actually knows); it took us 5.5 hrs including a 30 min lunch break at the pools. Caught a nice sunset hiking out.

Amazing area -- can't wait to go back.
