Needed some mileage today, but had to be home by early afternoon. Got to the trailhead at 0700. Headed up Westwood Loop, which is still under construction, and has been slightly rerouted every time I’ve been on it in the last seven weeks. Looks like it’s close to being done.

At the top of Westwood, I headed north on Timber Ridge, then Storm King Pkwy, which I followed all the way to where it ends. Half of it had recently been trimmed back, the other half still had knee high vegetation to walk thru. Everything grows fast around here. Noticed the top of Frog Spit trail now reaches Storm King. This was a nice development.

Once out of the park boundary, I took the road to the northeast, across the talus slope, up some switchbacks to the saddle between the summit of Rathdrum Mtn and a seemingly unnamed subpeak marked as 4467 (or something like that, I can’t remember the exact number).

From the saddle, I found a very faint road leading towards the summit of 4467. Lots of vegetation, but minimal thorns. Satellite view had shown a road/trail leading east/west just of the summit, and an old road circling around the north side. Satellite view does not always correspond with reality. Getting up the west side was fine. I wandered over to the summit for a minute, then headed down the east side. No visible route, very steep, tons of vegetation to push thru. Annoying. Finally found the road bed, and followed it around the north side and back west towards the saddle. Full of vegetation, but not terrible. Some nice views.

Once back at the saddle, I could retrace my steps for a while, or follow another old road as a hoped for shortcut. The old “road” quickly narrowed to an overgrown path. Not far from the next road, the path essentially ended in thick vegetation. I opted to head straight down to the road. Annoying, but short.

Once on the road, I headed towards the south slope of Rathdrum Mtn. Clear road, easy walking. Once at the ridge on the south, I started looking for the path down the ridge to my next road. Again, what’s visible on satellite view was overgrown in person. I didn’t want to turn back and follow the road back, mainly because I’m either stupid or stubborn, or both. After some back and forth, I spotted the path and headed steeply downhill. Steep descent, but there was a faint path visible most of the way thru the tall brush.

Got down to the road and followed it back down Storm King. Once back at the new junction with Frog Spit, I decided to see if it went all the way thru. If it did, it would connect to the top of Westwood and save me a couple of boring miles. Nice, pretty brand new trail, clearly designed for mountain bikers. After less than a quarter mile, I ran into a bulldozer clearing the trail, which no longer existed. I chatted with the guy for a moment, he said the route beyond is flagged if I wanted to keep going, but that it was not cleared at all. I had no interest in at least a quarter mile of steep off trail down that drainage (I’ve been there before and knew what lay ahead) so I turned around and got back on Storm King.

Finished on Majestic Passage, which has been re-graded in several places. Saw two guys playing disc golf, and other than the guy on the bulldozer, were the only people I saw all day. Trailhead was still empty when I finished around 1300. Saw one rubber boa, at least forty turkeys, one deer, a few rabbits, and a million grasshoppers. Other than the initial off trail up 4467, I would not repeat any of the other off trail sections I hiked today.

My original plan was a hike in the Selkirk Mtns, since Reagan did not have wrestling practice this afternoon, but I was feeling a little blah this morning and didn’t think I’d be up for 12 miles, 2900’ aeg, and possible snow at the top of the trail. So I opted for something more local, and planned on doing a shorter hike. Final stats indicate otherwise, lol.

First car in the parking lot at 0745. Headed up Westwood Loop, which has seen a ton of new construction since I was last on it a few weeks ago. Felt almost like a different trail. At the road, I turned left to see what the rest of Timber Ridge was like. Kind of boring, dead ends at private property.

Turned around and retraced my steps north and onto StormKing, figuring I’d turn around whenever I got tired or bored. The more I walked, the better I felt, so I kept going. Once up at the road, I stayed right, which was new to me, and gently climbed the east slopes of Rathdrum Mtn. Crossed several talus fields and had some great views. The road switchbacked higher, and I decided to make a balloon loop at the top where I could reconnect to the road on the south slope of the mountain. That would have been a very easy, scenic hike.

At the high point of the road I was on, a cairned path turned north, on an old logging road. I decided to check it out, thinking it might lead to the summit. Steep, but was in good condition at first, clearly a well used path. After a while, it began to fade, then seemingly disappeared at the edge of a talus slope. Looking at satellite view (which is almost useless in the dense vegetation around here) showed no distinct path. One option might have led above the trees above the talus, but looked steep. Another option might have followed the old road bed below the talus, then curled upward once past the talus. I’m guessing this was the more likely option, but unfortunately the old road bed was choked with deadfall, and was not appealing to me.

I opted to traverse across the talus, hoping to pick up a trail on the other side of it. Getting across was fine, kind of fun, but nothing looked great on the other side. Knowing I only had about 200 vertical feet left to summit, and knowing there was a reachable road above me, I opted to head offtrail straight uphill, despite the fact that offtrail travel around here is close to impossible. It was tough, but doable, and I knew it would be shortlived, with a better descent option on the other side.

Quick stop at the summit, then descended the main road. I kept an eye out for potential routes tieing in to the one I had been on, but nothing looked obvious. So it was a boring road walk back down to StormKing, then a descent on StormKing to Majestic Passage, which I took back to the parking lot. Warm by the time I finished, in the 80s. Ended up being a solid hike for the day.

Opted for another nearby hike today. Days of painting still has my arms and legs sore, and there’s still a lot more painting to do. I was the first vehicle at the trailhead, and got started to temps in the mid 50s, no clouds. Headed up StormKing Pkwy and took that all the way up and out of the park boundary.

From there, I headed west on a forest road around the south and west side of the mountain. Up until this point, the incline on the road had been pretty gradual. Once I curved around the north side, it got steep. Felt warm in the sunny spots too. Great views from the summit.

Mostly retraced my steps down. I wss hoping to take a few shortcuts on the descent, but they were all more overgrown. Hopped onto Majestic Passage for the final mile.

Good workout hike, kind of reminiscent of Mt Ord since it’s mostly a road walk. Only saw other people in the final 1.50 miles. Saw one rabbit and one rubber boa. Lots of deer and elk tracks. Temps in the mid 70s when I finished.
