I try to avoid the Rathdrum Mtn/StormKing trails on weekends, but this morning was cool and drizzly, and I figured an early arrival wouldn't be too crowded. I think the gate opens at 0700, I got there around 0745, and was the first vehicle in the parking lot. I wasn't sure exactly what trails I would do this morning, and a quick look at the updated trail map in the parking lot showed a ton of new trails since I was last here last summer/fall. They've been busy.

I headed up Westwood Loop, which was familiar territory. Always a pretty section of trail. At the top of Westwood, I continued up Frog Spit. I've been on part of Frog Spit before, but the upper part was new. It looks like Frog Spit is still being extended farther up the mountain, but I stopped at the current end of it. Then took Monarch Trail, including a short walk to the end of it to get a full track. Monarch was new to me. Monarch is easy, contouring about the road. All water crossings have bridges. The last bridge was "closed" due to being broken by a falled tree, so I used the tree itself as my bridge.

At the end of Monarch, I headed up StormKing Pkwy, which is always a little dull. Saw some moose tracks in the mud. Once at the radio tower, I decided that was far enough for the morning. The rain was done by this point, and it felt warm. Ditched the rain jacket.

Headed down Hi Frequency, which is also new. Nice enough trail, not too bad of an incline. At the bottom of Hi Frequency, I took Skyline, which I've been on before. It seems like Skyline is intended to be bikes only, but you have to hike at least part of it, and I'm guessing when Frog Spit is done, it'll be the hiking option. There was some blowdown on Skyline anyway, so bikes weren't an issue. Took a short bit of Timber Ridge to close the loop, then finished on Frog Spit and Westwood Loop again.

The parking lot was mostly full by the time I finished, and the parking near the disc golf course was full too. Nice workout, and now that most of the road construction between Rathdrum and my house is done, I'll have to hike over here a little more often.
