Drive out to Elephant Arch. Road is bumpy so a truck or SUV is recommended. Do not need 4wheel drive. Arch is a short walk right off the road to the north. Great drive out and fun little arch.

I believe the official name of this arch is actually Hewitt Canyon Arch, and despite what the description says, there is actually quite a nice trail leading up to it. You can download my GPX file and follow that if it's helpful. :)
I wouldn't go on a hike just to see the arch, but if you happen to be passing through on Hewitt Canyon road on your way to Woodbury Trailhead or Rogers Trough trailhead, then go for it. Just please be courteous to other drivers, and make sure you park out of the road. When we were driving through one time, there was a Subaru Crosstrek parked essentially right in the middle of the road blocking traffic. If that was you, you know who you are!!!
It was raining when we happened to be driving through, but we figured it was worth seeing the arch nonetheless, so we did the hike in the rain. Certainly an easy hike, and stunning scenery there in Hewitt Canyon, so definitely worth a stop in you're in the area.

On the way to Rogers Canyon, we made a quick stop at Elephant Arch. When I last visited Rogers Trough more than four years ago, I hadn't realized that the arch was along the way, or that it was was visible from FR 172. As close as it is, this barely qualifies as a hike, but it was an enjoyable stop along on way and a nice way to warm up on a cool morning. We arrived just as the sun was coming up, and I ran up to the arch quickly for some pictures and had the spot to myself. We'd heard that the arch can get busy, and with limited pullout spots along the road, we figured it would be best not to wait until the drive out at the end of the day. The scenery along FR 172 is fantastic--lots of interesting geology in that area of the Superstitions. Since the Rogers Trough hike was the main event for the day, I didn't spend any time exploring near the arch, but it looks like an area that would have a lot of caves and interesting features.

With the Milky Way season upon us, I decided to head out to Hewitt Canyon to get some pictures of this cool little Arch. The 130am alarm clock was almost ignored, but I am glad I was able to get up and get out there.

The "hike" was the usual off trail navigation. It was a little harder in the pitch dark, but between my headlamp and my eyes adjusting to the darkness, I located the arch pretty easily. I arrived to the arch about 330am and took pictures until the astro twilight started about 450am-5am.

Lot's of water along Hewitt Canyon Rd. I could hear Roblas Creek flowing from my vantage point above the arch. There were some groups out camping/rv-ing along the road before Roblas Peak, but I saw and heard no human activity near the arch. I am sure it was a dirt road traffic jam once the day got going.

I’ve always been fascinated by the forces of nature it takes to create an arch. But this one is my favorite.

I have been fighting off a flu bug for more than 3 weeks and kept postponing challenging hikes. I decided to take the lovely Mrs. Dilling and Son #3 out to Hewitt Canyon for a little exploring. I last came through this area in the 1990's. It's been way too long. We recently upgraded our dirt road capabilities and I thought this little jaunt would be a nice way to get out of the house and get some fresh air and scenery.

We stopped a few locations for some exploring and eventually made our way to the arch. It's easy to spot right off the road. Traffic was pretty heavy today along this road. Lots of trucks & ATVs out. Lots of target practice as well. It sounded like a war zone at the start of Hewitt Canyon Road.

The hike up to this cool arch is very easy and not far at all. It took us 10 minutes to get up to the arch. The entire canyon is very scenic and this area is no exception. I will return to this spot for some nighttime shooting once the Milky Way is visible again.

On the way back, there was a truck blocking the road. I was about to start honking my horn and yelling, but then we saw why they had stopped. Right in Hewitt Canyon there was a group of Big Horn sheep. A ram and 4 ewes. Always a treat to see those amazing creatures.

A quick and easy hike with the family. It was a nice morning in the Supes for sure.

We arrived well after dark, which made finding the arch extremely difficult even with headlamps. Fortunately, the formation is very close to the road. We found it after hiking in the general direction it should have been. I did bring my puppy, but would not suggest a dog as the terrain is difficult to navigate. There is no trail and the land is choked with cacti and shrubbery. It could be done, I just wouldn't advise it.

There are very few places for a tent, but we found a small flat area just north of the arch between a meter-tall rock and a palo verde.

Recently became aware of this location and had to go check it out. Made for a nice morning ride out to the arch, it was quite obvious from the road. It really does look like an elephant. We hung out there for a while as it was a really nice morning. Hewitt Canyon road was very busy and I wondered how many of these people are just driving by not noticing this natural arch.
The directions at the bottom of the description are right on.

Read the triplog about this Arch and thought it will perfect for when our Granddaughter came out during Spring break, little jeeping and a short hike. Was a perfect day, got out in the country and a perfect arch to wonder, again how the good powers to be, gave all this to us to gaze upon.

We decided to take the ATV out for a joy ride through the Superstitions. We found the elephant and couldn't resist the urge to hike up. There really isn't a trail so we parked the ATV on the side of the dirt road and headed up. It's quick and pretty easy to get to. Then we continued on through the Superstitions. Good day.

Parked by the corral on the south side of Roblas Butte. I wouldn't recommend going much further with a low clearance vehicle. Walked the FR to the arch. Wildflowers are everywhere out here.

Saw this on HAZ and thought it would be a good short hike. Gorgeous area, lots and lots of big, healthy cacti, and the little arch is very cool. In actuality this is a scramble of a couple hundred yards, (nowhere near a mile) and is very easily navigated. As you drive .2 miles past the cattle guard look up to your left and you'll see the arch from the road.

The only drawback to the whole area was that it sounded like a war zone with all the target shooters. We even had to yell at one group to hold their fire so we could walk up the wash to get back to our truck, they were pretty stupid about their choice of shooting backdrops.

quick trip to Elephant Arch in hopes of catching the sunset lighting up the clouds. Some color, but mostly fizzled. I approached the arch up the south drainage since it was mostly clear of brush and stickies, still managed to get a few pokes. A brief rain cleared the dust from the quad traffic and made the desert smell really nice! A camp had some fireworks, to boot!
