An end of the year hike Bruce and I have been doing for 12 years or so.
I forgot the New Year Glasses, though. 🤦‍♂️.
Johnlp, Joe, Linda, Rob And Lindsy joined us.
Nice hike although walking in sand for so long can wear ya down.
Great scenery, temps, and company. Thanks Bruce and everyone, like HAZ, you rock!!

Denny asked Bruce to create a 2-mile New Year's hike and he'd bring the iconic prop glasses we all look forward to wearing.

Since we started right next to the river we went down to check it out. The flow is marshland mucky at 19 CFS. For reference, it's generally a thousand in tubing season.

The first mile was a better-than-anticipated trail. Throngs of hikers everywhere, seven if not eight. I only know this area from Salt River tubing and thought we were near the cliff swallow mud nest cliffs. Looking at a map now, that appears to be 2.6 mi downstream.

Healthy saguaros, lots of paloverde, mesquite, and more hackberry bushes than I've been aware of anywhere. Luckily, I understand the difference between wolfberry and hackberry now thanks to Greg.

In this Blue Point vicinity, we heard the beautiful sounds of birds chirping the highway roaring. Overlooking the river was cool. Several fishermen cast from the shore. One was wading among autumn colors now a week into winter, with a week of spring showers on the immediate horizon.

We turned the corner to the Coke Oven and the adventure began! The tread is a loofah-grade therapeutic joy... sand.

Chuparosa and Canyon Ragweed enter the mix of flora. Staying on the horse use-trails made the sand navigation a little easier.

The coke oven is intriguing for a minute or two. Bruce darted off. Figuring he was headed for a 10-100 the balance of the group waited patiently in Horse Apple Ravine swarming with flies. As it turns out he went to bag a nearby peak.

Continuing, the depth of the sand increased. The equine use-trail didn't help as much. Travel was easier on the hard-packed edges. However, zigzagging the snagging brush nixed the advantage.

Density of Jojoba Bush was substantial for a stretch. At least two in the group took the opportunity to snack on the lotion-bearing seeds.

Only six miles of sand until the trail ascended out of the wash to lake views. With Four Peaks angled in the background, views were finally almost as good as the parking lot.

We all reminisced about the good old days when Denny brought party glasses while taking group photos into the sun once or twice. 0.7 miles babbling about skiing snakes, cow slapping, and whatnot brought us back to sand. We crossed the highway and found more sand. Looked like the Bush Fire II was underway in the distance.

We stopped at the turn-off to the petroglyphs while Denny sneaked away. As previously reported, there is a huge sign stating federal and state trespassing fines. It's a non-typical state or federal sign with no state or federal insignia and did not return as private land when I checked last month. Perhaps a Homeland security issue with the dam below or duck hunters trying to scare folks away from their hood.

Synopsis
Slightly over 2 miles and no 2023 party favor glasses. By chance, I enjoy hikes over 2 miles. The sand was not as bad as anticipated. Weather was perfect. Albeit repetitive and boring to most, the Sonoran brush and such is well-watered and intense throughout.

I found the NE quarter of the loop to be the most intriguing. No desire to hike it again but it was shockingly worthy once, in nice weather with good company. Thanks for dragging me through kicking and screaming.

Annual Eagle & Turtle New Years-ish hike. Interesting scenery along the Salt River and Saguaro Lake.
Quite a bit of hiking in washes failed to detract from the overall experience. Very nice weather. Good conversation. Cool glyphs and views.
Thanks Bruce and Denny for organizing, and Linda for driving. Good to see everyone and meet Lindsy.
Happy New Year a few days early. :)

New Years Eve hike (it’s a special calendar) over near Salt River/Saguaro Lake. Got started around 0830 and meandered west. Some interesting geology at the base of the bluffs, and along parts of the wash. Checked out the oven, then continued in the sandy wash. After a few miles of that, my feet are completely exfoliated.

Finally got some views in the latter half of the loop. The trail was rocky in places once we got out of the sand, but nothing terrible. Got some nice views of the lake, dam, and river again as we finished up the loop. It was nice to have some clouds most of the morning, but it did get warm when the sun peeked out. Good to see all the usual faces, and nice to meet Lindsy. Fun day, and thank you to Bruce and Denny for the invitation!

Year 12 in the NYE hikes Denny and I started on 12/31/2010. I had a date with a football game on Saturday, So we settled on this date.

We were both a bit younger back when we started this tradition.
[ photo ]

The cast this year included past NYE hikers Joe, Linda, John, My son Rob. New this year, was Rob's wife Lindsy.

With specific hiking parameters, we hit up an area that none of us had been to before.

We started from the Water Users day use area, just downstream from Stewart Dam on Saguaro Lake.

Pre-hike we were greeted to the salute of shotgun fire just below the parking lot. A couple of duck hunters and their dogs, with a miss.

The river below the dam had very little flow and was kind of scummy. We followed some use trails before we made it over to the other side of the Bush Highway. The trail here is well defined and gets quite a bit of use from both man and equine.

After the Blue Point Rec. area, the trail once again follows the river. There were a few fishermen with lines in the water here. The trail takes a turn to the North to follow a wash. "The Oven" is not far from this point. There is quite a bit of hiking in sand on this loop. Nothing too hard, it just gets a bit annoying after awhile.

Once you reach the high point of this loop, the views of Saguaro Lake open up and you are on a much more enjoyable ridge line.

We peeled off of the oven loop and made our way over to the Stewart Dam portion of the loop. Nice trails on this side of the highway, with good viewpoints to the lake.

The final side trip to check out the glyphs was closed because of trail work.

Perfect weather all day long!

Thanks to all that joined us for the 12th annual hike.

HAZzy New Year to all!

Petroglyphs no longer accessible. Shiny new barbed wire fence on shiny new poles prevents entry where trail Ys at yellow TRAIL ENDS 500 FEET sign. 10' in front of yellow sign, new giant white sign on fence says, in large black letters, NO TRESPASSING, etc. - violators will be prosecuted under state & federal law, with potential $2,000 fine. Pretty much makes the hike worthless since there are plenty of other trails with accessible glyphs in Superstitions, McDowells, South Mtn Park, et al.

Started Labor Day off right, with a sunrise hike with the Mrs. Humidity was down a bit from where it's been recently, but still plenty of moisture in the air for us desert dwellers. We parked at the pull out along Bush Highway where the trail crosses the road as our starting point. By doing so, were able to make it up to the lake overlook to catch the sunrise. Likewise, by saving the western side wash to the end, we were able to enjoy some bonus shade. In the first 1/2 mile, I nearly stepped on a sleeping diamondback. I didn't even notice him until my trailing wife pointed him out.

Took a couple of short side jaunts along the way. Beautiful AZ morning!

Did a figure 8, combining the Stewart Mountain Dam-Petroglyph and Goldfield Ovens Loops, starting from Water Users on the Salt River.

The petroglyphs loop around Stewart Mountain Dam is underrated. I really enjoyed this loop. A nice combination of ancient art in the petroglyphs with views of modern architecture in the dam and the two massive culverts under Bush Highway.

As for the Goldfield Ovens Loop, I enjoyed the views of both Fountain Hills and Saguaro Lake from the high point on the north east side of the loop, and I enjoyed checking out the Lime kiln, but otherwise, it was a lot of slogging through sandy washes.

Other than the short stretch along the Salt River near the Blue Point picnic area, the solitude factor is great on this one.

It has been about 15 years since I last hiked this loop, and the weather this morning provided a perfect opportunity to end that streak. Much of the trail was unchanged from what I had recalled, except for a few "signs" that remained somewhat meaningless. For example, as I passed out of the old trail adjacent to the highway abutment beneath Bush Highway, there now was a "fence" with a sign facing opposite my direction of travel, which read "No Parking". Continuing along the public right of way into the small community of Saguaro Lake Ranch, I was pleased to see that the meticulously maintained cabins were still a reminder of how hidden treasures can remain such. The roadway ends at the fence/gate of the Stewart Dam, but the trail almost seems to be "blocked" by a wooden slat fence. There were no signs indicating "private property" [which I totally respect] but the uphill trail appeared well traveled by foot and horse. As I continued along the trail until its exit onto Bush Highway I noted a few other signs, again facing travel from the opposite direction, which were unclear as to their meaning or intent. Again, there is no sign indicating the existence of the primary "petroglyph" rock-- and perhaps that is just as well, as much unlike the defacing that has taken place at sites like those along Hieroglpyphic Trail, these pictographs appear undamaged. My hiking buddy had suffered injury to his foot earlier last week, and so we opted to skip the Goldfield Oven, and shortly after crossing the highway we turned south to proceed down the wash back down to the conduits and through to our parked vehicles.

Despite the cold mornings, we noted some of the desert vegetation was already beginning to blossom.

Another quick jaunt out to Saguaro Lake for a sunrise. Ever since I was read the Riot Act from the lady at the Saguaro Lake Ranch for parking on their "dam" street near the "dam" entrance, I have accessed this trail via the Bush Highway.

345am came earlier this morning and I was a little slow to get up. But, I was able to get up to the little ridge area before the sun made it's appearance. Lots of foot prints and horse hoof prints along the sandy trail on the way up.

The clouds looked promising on the way up, but they were quite diminished once I did get in position. It was still a very nice sunrise. I love the peace and quiet and solitude of hikes like this. A lone boater racing across the lake broke up the morning songs of birds, but it was otherwise tranquil experience. Exactly what I was looking for.

I moved across the ridge to get different views. After my pictures were done, I explored a little along the trail. I didn't go to the petroglyphs as I have been to see them many times. This is a neat little area with the rock formations, Stewart Mountain on the west and the lake to the east.

These June sunrises are so early. But, I will take the nice temps of the pre-dawn and dawn anytime over what's in store for this afternoon.

Only two goals for today:
1. Add just enough AEG to take me over 300,000' for 2019
2. Take photos of the snow on Mt Ord, Boulder Mountain, Pine Mountain, Mine Mountain and Four Peaks
We accomplished both and got out of the area before getting run over by the constant and heavy traffic in both directions, made worse by the drivers paying too much attention to the scenery than the road.

Started along Bush Highway, followed the horse trail to the petroglyphs and view over the dam. Headed back on a route up and over the top, stopped for a short PB-and-J snack with a direct sight-line to the petroglyph on a large boulder. Dropped down to Bush Highway, crossed it and followed the old road to the piles of blue-gray boulders then looped clockwise around the small peaks and back to the car.

Didn't have a lot of time today, but wanted to get out and do something. Thanks AZLOT69 for posting this hike. It's just what we were looking for. Meandered around a bit after seeing the petroglyphs, but didn't see any other "points of interest". This would be a great, easy hike for out-of-town visitors that like prehistoric things.

I have been looking for a place to take some sunrise pictures at Saguaro Lake. I have been up the peaks at Stewart Mountian before, but I wanted to get a little closer to the lake. I thought about climbing up Peak 2433. But, I noticed this little gem when I was searching for hikes/routes on HAZ. It turned to be exactly what I was looking for!

I only did about 1/2 of the loop. I made it as far as the Bush Highway, but I will be back to complete this one and hit the ovens and Peak 2433 as well. The yellow cliffs overlooking the lake off of Butcher Jones Road also look interesting. I will have to take a look over there in the future too.

I was not sure if it was ok to park at the end of Stewart Dam Road, but I followed the triplogs of others. Finding the trail was pretty easy and it was well worn and developed. The desert around the lake is awesome. Very lush with vegetation for sure.

The petroglyphs were right off the trail and easy to find. I stopped there on the way back. I was searching for a place to capture the sunrise. I went off trail when it turned towards the Bush Highway and found some nice places to set up.

I had limited time this morning, so I had to cut it short. The only thing about hiking around the dams along the Salt that slightly irks me is all the power lines that always seem to block the beautiful scenery. But, that is what dams do, so I can live with them.

The temperature was nice at sunrise, but it was a little sticky out today. The sun is up later now and it's not as hot. The end is near! The cooler temps are almost here!

I wanted to go to Butcher Jones, but the road construction left me sitting in a line of cars for over 10 minutes due to road construction, so I opted to do this hike. I started where the tubers go into the river. I don't remember the name of the rec site. I walked a long the river and got bored. I still haven't fully recovered from being sick either. I also wore my old shoes that are very worn and hurt my feet. :(

On the way back, I spotted a gopher snake near the river. I wasn't going to photograph it, but I did anyway. I actually don't like photographing snakes. I only photograph snakes because you all like them so much and wish you would encounter more on your hikes and near your home or office.

Ryan is having his house painted so something close was in order so that he could check in with the crew in the afternoon, so this loop fit the bill, close and something new. Plan A also included hiking Sunrise Arch if the river was cross-able, plan B was to hit Lone Mountain on the way home.

Nice easy loop hike although hiking through the loose sand in the wash was a bit tiring. Saw 4 deer off at a distance while checking out the oven. Added in the Stewart Mountain Dam loop to check out the petroglyphs which included hiking though the Saguaro Lake Ranch. I saw a young man cleaning the pool so just gave him a shout out letting him know we were just hiking through, and received a confirmation back that that was OK. Although the river was low, crossing it would have meant wading through water so we opted for plan B. The hike from the Water Users parking lot to Blue Point brought back memories of hiking the road with tubes in tow back in the day before they modernized the area. Added plus, other than at the ranch, and the parking areas, we saw absolutely no others on the trail.

Did a figure 8 of the northern half of Goldfield Ovens, all of Stewart Mountain Dam Petroglyphs, then the southern half of the Goldfield Ovens loop (azdesertfather's alternate route). Picked up rockadoodledude about 0615, to avoid rush hour traffic, and it was a wise decision. On speed limit-obeying drive east on Bush Highway, pointed out presence of MCSO substation. On way back west, hiking along Bush Highway, saw MCSO traffic stop. Few minutes later heard a siren blip for another stop, and a few minutes after that, MCSO going lights and siren east on highway. Coyotes just off to our right started yipping. Unfortunately I did not get my iPhone out and videotaping quick enough to record the coyote chorus. On speed limit-obeying drive back along Bush HIghway, was passed by three more MCSO units, which caused me to point out to Mike that they have the ability to zap even while moving, even in the opposite direction. (I got nailed doing 80 in a 65 zone that way, near Dudleyville.) And *then* there was a Mesa PD car waiting *just* inside city limits as Bush Highway turns into Power Rd. Freaking gauntlet. You have been warned.
