Monday hike with Christina. I've been wanting to hike the ridgeline since I first hiked out here in September of 2015! It's never too late and today is the DAY! Woo hoo! Perfect temps. Holiday lite traffic. Plenty of parking at Dreamy Draw when I arrived. So nice. There was a group of like 20 unicyclists prepping to head out on the trails. I chatted for a bit with the guy parked aside of me who was visiting from California. He said this group gets together this time every year in AZ. They hit South Mountain, Sedona, and PMP today. Christina and I headed out through the tunnel on traill 100 under the AZ51 which had a big muddy spot right in the middle, eww. Did the Mercury Mine Loop counter clockwise. And broke off northbound to the Fenceline trail. Followed that and turned pretty much straight up the mountain, a little sketchy at spots. I was getting worried about what the trail back down looked like as we approached the summit. To my surprise, there was another hiker coming up that way, that's a good sign for sure! Chatted with him for a bit until we went our separate ways. Continued on the ridgeline trail to the southwest. Spectacular! Followed the trail along the base of the mountain back to trail 100 and the tunnel back to Dream Draw. What a great President's Day!

Second hike of the morning. It’s been 3 years since my last visit so I thought I was add this in after “2075”. First time to Dreamy Draw since the reopening. I didn’t get see much of it, except the parking….which is nicely done. Took the Mercury Trail and did the loop clockwise. Pretty as I remember it. Though they have changed the climb on the west side of the ridgeline on the backside. Looks like the old route still exists, so pick your poison. No wildlife. Met two hikers during the loop.

I hadn't hiked out of the Dreamy Draw TH since it had been reopened. They did a wonderful job with the design on this. It mimics what they did with the Piestewa area.

I started a CCW on the paved East Dreamy Draw Bikeway to the Perl Charles Trail and hit up a few use trails, making my way to the Freedom Trail. I made the climb up the Freedom Trail to the Summit Trail and continued the ascent. I get a kick out of the different skill levels that are making/attempting the climb to the top.

I took a snack break at the summit and dried off in the breeze up top.

Down, down, down, and I continued my CCW loop on the Freedom Trail.

My favorite trail on this loop is the VOAZ. Nice geology, a pleasant track, and a moderate grade.

To finish this off, I headed to the other side of The 51 and took in the Mercury Mine Loop.

Filtered clouds and light breezes kept temperatures perfect for hiking. In the afternoon, the clouds started burning away, and I would get a little warm in the sun, but still very nice.

Quick, after work jog. Started from Dreamy Draw TH. Did a clockwise loop. Jogged the whole thing, but the hills seemed especially challenging. :? Had one runner breathing up my backside on one of the hills, but I held them off with a few well placed stones.....joking. Except for the jogger and one other hiker had the trail to myself. Beautiful day...in the 60's :o With a few isolated clouds. Saw one rabbit and that was it.

Short after work jog. Didn't have to dodge raindrops, but I had to deal with the aftermath. Dreamy Draw area got dumped 30 minutes before I got there so even though it wasn't raining there were several unusual water obstacles. I had to ford a stream :o just east of the Dreamy Draw parking lot. I've crossed that wash 10's of times and never seen it flowing with water like today. Pretty cool. And then the tunnel under the 51 was more a puddled marsh than the expected dry haven. You'd think a tunnel sheltered from the elements would be one of the driest sections on the trail. Just the opposite. Apparently the tunnel is a low spot, especially on the northern end and water was pooling on the cement floor :? Despite those elements it was a nice run. Trail itself was pretty firm, with a few muddy exceptions. Went clockwise. Weather was gorgeous! Loved the clouds! Saw one hiker and 2 trail runners.

Mellow figure 8 loop going eastbound from the Dreamy Draw trailhead, went out on one of the northern social trails, intersected back on #100 to #1A. Swung through the parking lot for another loop around the Mercury Mine loop. First time on this part of Trail 100, so may need to explore the eastern end a few more times.

Always a down home favorite. It was pretty warm today which was disappointing. The desert is really dry right now. The creosote and brittle bush is dying.

Nice, short after work jog. Parked at Dreamy Draw and did a CCW loop. A few cars at the lot, but no one on the trails. Nice little breeze and I needed it...I could feel just the teasings of humidity.

Short little hike through the old stomping grounds with the Gabby dog. Trying to keep the legs moving and ready for a Humphreys summit in a few weeks. Sun is blazing even at 7AM. Saw a snake near the bridge, not a rattler.

Quick and easy stroll around the loop with some out of town guests to show them how fast it is to access trails in central Phoenix. Plus taking advantage of what is likely the last cool weekend until October.

Although the Dreamy Draw Rec Area parking lot neared capcity and hordes milled about, it was another world on the W side of the pedestrian tunnel under 51 HW, like a time machine had thrown us back to, say, last Wednesday. We encountered maybe a dozen hikers on the trail, 3 bikers and a jogger. And for the first mile, we passed only a young woman on horseback with her dog leading the way. As we rose to the trail juncture on the NW corner, great views opened up, none better than snow-capped Four Peaks off on the horizon. The McDowells, the Brown's Ranch peaks, Pinnacle, Tom's Thumb all visible and snowless in the distance and Shadow and Lookout much closer. Also from the juncture, we saw the so-called backside of popular Peak 2429. Jason Cleghorn's Mercury Mine route of last year shows a path to get there from where we stood. Coming around to the S side of the trail, the highrises of downtown and midtown Phoenix pop into view. Haze made it next to impossible to see South Mtn and the downtown skyline. Counted three old mine shafts, now sealed, and several other suspects. My time was slow, barely 2 mph. It was the hariest hike I've done since last month's ankle sprain, and I used a lot of caution in descending several steep spots of slick and loose rock. You don't notice them with healthy legs. Nice hike otherwise on a beautiful day, first time in weeks doing a trail in shirt sleeves and shorts. The desert spring approacheth!

Yes, it's a dinky trail, in the heart of the city, with little wildlife and only a few good vistas. But it proved enjoyable if nothing else for the fact I had never done it before. A trail decision here, a possible mountain route there, some little things to keep me interested. After plying over the rocky Mormon Tr yesterday, this was akin to walking on cloud. The up-and-down trail was mostly dirt and small rocks along with my favorite footing, solid rock. I liken the MM Loop to Scarlett Canyon, another urban trail farther north. While the MM is a prettier trail, it is noisier with the HW 51 traffic on the E side. And infested with bike riders. Nice guys but they come upon you out of nowhere. Of the 24 folks I ran into, 17 were atop two-wheelers. Scarlett is trashy, but much quieter with more wildlife and has the added advantage of an accessible summit, Pk 2050, I believe. The centerpiece of the MM Loop, Pk 1922, has no clear trail to the summit and in fact appears daunting from the trail with its steepness, rocks and brush. Did find a potential "S" route on the south and an up-and-around on the west. I could visualize myself up there someday. But maybe it was just the effects of the reputed mercury vapors that linger there in Dreamy Draw.

Started from the Dreamy Draw TH and went counterclockwise when doing this loop. When I went from the "east" to the "west" side of the loop I swung out a little further westward to add some mileage. I basically followed the trail that takes you up to the road to the homes on the hill and then followed a trail along the base of the mountain that took me toward the freeway. I then joined back up with the Mercury to finish the loop.

This trip was designed to connect a very very very small(.05 miles) portion of the Mercury Mine Loop. I also added a a portion of the Stoney Mtn Ridge Line trail and some unnamed trails near 14th st.
